Abstract: Evidence has accumulated that, in the rat heart, nitric oxide (NO) inhibits β-adrenoceptor-mediated positive inotropic effects. The aim of this study was to investigate whether this effect of NO may be altered in cardiac hypertrophy. For this purpose we studied the effects of the NO-donor SNAP (S-nitroso-N-acetyl-D,L-penicillamine) on isoprenaline-induced positive inotropic effects in left ventricular strips from three models of cardiac hypertrophy: a) 12–16 weeks old male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) vs. age-matched normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats, b) six weeks old male Wistar WKY-rats subtotally nephrectomized (SNX) 7 weeks after SNX vs. sham-operated rats (SOP) and c) four weeks old male Wistar WKY-rats supra-renal aortic-banded (AOB, band diameter 1.0 mm) 8 weeks after AOB vs. SOP. In all three models of cardiac hypertrophy the heart weight/body weight ratio was significantly higher than in their respective controls. On isolated electrically driven ventricular strips isoprenaline (10–10–10–5 M) caused concentration-dependent increases in force of contraction. Maximal increases (Emax) were similar in SHR vs. WKY-rats, but reduced in SNX- (2.9�0.29 vs. 5.1�0.34 mN, p<0.01) and AOB-rats (2.3�0.37 vs. 4.2�0.33 mN, p<0.01). In control rats (WKY and the respective SOP) the NO-donor SNAP (10–5 M) caused a significant rightward-shift of the concentration-response curve for isoprenaline; this rightward-shift could be inhibited by methylene blue (10–5 M). In ventricular strips of SHR, SNX- and AOB-rats, however, 10–5 M SNAP failed to significantly affect isoprenaline-induced positive inotropic effect. We conclude that in cardiac hypertrophy effects of NO are attenuated. Such an impairement of the NO-system could contribute to the development and/or maintenance of cardiac hypertrophy.

Differential cross section dσdΩand analyzing power Ayof elastic 6Li(p,p)6Li scattering have been measured in the energy range 0.4 MeV ⩽ Ep⩽ 2.2 MeV. The angular distributions were obtained at thirteen different angles between θlab= 40° and 160° with statistical uncertainties of less than 2 × 10−3. The data show a resonance-like behaviour in the excitation functions for dσdΩand Aynear Ep= 1.8 MeV (i.e. Ec.m.= 1.56 MeV). An energy-dependent phase-shift analysis has been performed from which resonance parameters have been deduced. The analysed data are well described in the whole energy range and support the predictions of recent refined resonating-group calculations.

Zink kann neben Phosphat komplexometrisch mit Eriochromschwarz T als Indicator mit sehr scharfem Endpunkt titriert werden. Aus dieser Tatsache ergibt sich die Möglichkeit einer maßanalytischen Phosphatbestimmung. Ammoniumzinkphosphat wird gefällt, ausgewaschen und wieder aufgelöst. In der Lösung wird Zink titriert. Voraussetzung für die Berechnung des Phosphatgehaltes ist die stöchiometrische Zusammensetzung des Ammoniumzinkphosphat-Niederschlags.

Fusion of organic phosphorous substances with sodium peroxide in the Parr bomb or with compressed oxygen in a calorimeter apparatus may be followed by chelatometrio phosphate determination via the precipitation of ammonium zinc phosphate. The experiments were carried out with triphenyl phosphine, tributyl phosphate and adenosine-3-monophosphoric acid. Ferrophosphorus also was fused with compressed oxygen. It was demonstrated that in this case, too, chelatometric phosphate determination is readily possible if the iron content of the solution produced by combustion is masked. The results were statistically evaluated.

In Mitteilung I ist ein Verfahren für die maßanalytische Bestimmung von Phosphat in reinen Lösungen von Phosphorsäure oder Alkaliphosphaten beschrieben worden, bei dem Phosphat als Ammoniumzinkphosphat gefällt und nach der Auflösung von Ammoniumzinkphosphat Zink komplexometrisch titriert wird.

Aim Oral anticoagulation can be managed either by a general practitioner or by the patient. The objective of the present analysis was to investigate which form of management is more appropriate for handling oral anticoagulation. Method and results The subgroup of 355 patients in the German Experience in Low Intensity Anticoagulation (GELIA) study who switched during the study from general practitioner management to patient self-management (PSM) comprised the study population. The percentage of International Normalized Ratio measurements within the randomly assigned range was used as an estimator for individual time in target range (TTR), and was measured for each patient during general practitioner management and PSM; patients therefore served as their own controls. Switching from general practitioner management to PSM resulted in a significant benefit (11% greater TTR). Furthermore, with PSM there was a profound tendency toward reduced incidence of serious complications (3·28, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2·1–4·8, versus 4·67, 95% CI 2·9–7·1, per 100 patient-years). Conclusion Clinical outcome was improved with PSM because of the greater TTR. PSM led to more stringent anticoagulation control because of more frequent testing, and was thus equivalent to, if not better than, general practitioner managed anticoagulation.
