Summary: A simple method for rearing Clysia ambiguella (Lepid., Tortricidae) A method for mass rearing the vine grape tortricid,Clysia ambiguella, in laboratory is described. The moths lay their eggs into folded folies of plastics. The caterpillars are feeded with vine leaves (stored in a freezer). Since spring of 1973 six generations of the pest were reared in succession.

Reaction of the keto ester (I) with various organometallic reagents (II) yields predominantly the tertiary alcohols (IV) with axial hydroxy groups.

Cyclocondensation of benzylamine (I), aldehyde (II), and ketodiester (III) or ‐monoester (V) leads to pyridones respective their enols (IV) and (VI), respectively, which are reduced to epimeric alcohols, e.g. (VII).

Reduction of the oxomethanobenzazocines (I) with NaBH4or LiAlH4is performed under various conditions to yield the epimeric secondary alcohols (II) ‐ (IV).

Cerium(IV) sulfate oxidation of the 1‐benzyl‐4‐oxopiperidine derivatives (Ia) ‐ (Ic) yields the bridged benzazocines (II), together with the simply dehydrogenated products (III) and (IV).
