A new method for the quantification of trace periodate (PI) concentration was developed. The Br--ABTS method was based on the oxidation coloration reaction. Under Br-catalysis, the PI rapidly oxidized ABTS to the green ABTS•+, which could be accurately determined by UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The absorbance of ABTS•+was remarkably correlated linearly with the concentration of PI at 415 nm, and the slope of standard curve was (3.77 ± 0.01)× 104M−1·cm−1. The proposed method had high sensitivity and the slope at different optical paths showed a good multiplicative relationship for concentration values as low as 0.02 μM to be measured. The existence of different solutes in river and lake water did not affect the accuracy of Br--ABTS method, the generated ABTS•+could maintain good stability within 30 min, and the recovery of PI was between 95%− 105%. The stoichiometric coefficient between PI and ABTS•+was 1.12 at pH 3.0. In addition, a common reductant (hydroxylamine), transition metal ions and inorganic anions (Cl-, SO42-and HCO3-) did not affect the Br--catalyzed oxidation of ABTS for the measurement of PI concentration. Consequently, Br--ABTS is a feasible method to determine the concentration of PI.

A 62-year-old black man was revived after an episode of cardiac arrest (sudden cardiac death). He was known to suffer from a rare abnormality of lipid (fat) metabolism that results in an inability to convert cholesterol into bile acids. This condition is called cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis and has been reported in fewer than 100 cases. He was found to have an irregularity of his heart conduction system which produced an arrhythmia (an irregular heart beat) that resulted in a ventricular tachycardia. Ventricular tachycardia is a rapid flutter-like beating of the ventricles which reduces the ability of the heart to efficiently pump. This condition was caused by a problem of conduction located in his left bundle branch; it was cured by transferring part of the right bundle branch, which was performed by a catheter placed into his heart through a peripheral vein. The patient, however, suffered from an addition problem that also resulted in ventricular tachycardia and he was treated with a combination of procainamide and quinidine medications. The patient's underlying condition was thought to be associated with accelerated hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), which can result in aneurysms, dilations, of the coronary vessels which nourish the heart. However, in this case of cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis, the patient suffered from obstructing atherosclerotic lesions of his heart's own coronary vessels.

In order to understand the kinetic characteristics of coal gas desorption based on the pulsating injection (PI), the research experimentally studied the kinetic process of methane desorption in terms of the PI and hydrostatic injection (HI). The results show that the kinetic curves of methane desorption based on PI and HI are consistent with each other, and the diffusion model can best describe the characteristics of methane desorption. Initial velocity, diffusion capacity and ultimate desorption amount of methane desorption after PI are greater than those after HI, and the ultimate desorption amount increases by 16.7–39.7%. Methane decay rate over the time is less than that of the HI. The PI influences the diffusion model parameters, and it makes the mass transfer Biot number Bi′decrease and the mass transfer Fourier series F0′increase. As a result, PI makes the methane diffusion resistance in the coal smaller, methane diffusion rate greater, mass transfer velocity faster and the disturbance range of methane concentration wider than HI. Therefore, the effect of methane desorption based on PI is better than that of HI.

The purposes of this study were to describe the types of physical therapy (PT) procedural interventions used during inpatient rehabilitation for children and adolescents with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and to examine the relationship between intensity of intervention and mobility changes.
