An abstract of the article "Effect of a Single, Oral, High-Dose Vitamin D Supplementation on Endothelial Function in Patients With Peripheral Arterial Disease: A Randomised Controlled Pilot Study," by H. Stricker and colleagues is presented.

In a cross-sectional study involving data from 7,203 subjects, of which 422 had prevalent peripheral arterial disease (PAD - defined as having an ankle-brachial index <0.9), higher rates of hypertension, coronary artery disease, diabetes, and smoking were found among patients with PAD, as compared to those without PAD. Lower odds of PAD were associated with consumption of vitamins A (OR=0.79), C (OR=0.84), E (OR=0.78), and B6 (OR=0.78), as well as folate (OR=0.67), omega-3 (alpha-linolenic) fatty acids (OR=0.79), and fiber (OR=0.65) - irrespective of traditional risk factors for cardiovascular disease. These results suggest that supplementation of the diet with certain vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids, and fiber may be associated with a reduced risk of PAD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
