Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a gaseous signaling molecule, exerting crucial regulatory functions in organelles and cellular environments. H2S exhibits high therapeutic potential and synergistic effects with other drugs, and its potency is notably enhanced through organelle-specific targeting. Yet, the navigation of light-activated H2S donors to specific organelles remains absent. Here, we report the first organelle-specific photocage that simultaneously delivers H2S and a payload with subcellular precision to mitochondria of live human cells using tissue-penetrating near-infrared light as a trigger. The fluorogenic payload enables real-time monitoring of the process, and we demonstrate the concurrent uncaging in mitochondria through a combination of fluorescence microscopy and mitochondria-specific fluorescent probes. We anticipate that these photocages will permit the precise delivery of H2S-drug combinations with exceptional spatiotemporal control, thereby driving the harnessing of known synergistic effects and the discovery of novel therapeutic strategies.

Benefits emerging from applying high-entropy ceramics in Li-ion technology are already well-documented in a growing number of papers. However, an intriguing question may be formulated: how can the multicomponent solid solution-type material ensure stable electrochemical performance? Utilizing an example of nonequimolar Sn-based Sn0.8(Co0.2Mg0.2Mn0.2Ni0.2Zn0.2)2.2O4high-entropy spinel oxide, we provide a comprehensive model explaining the observed very good cyclability. The material exhibits a high specific capacity above 600 mAh g–1under a specific current of 50 mA g–1and excellent capacity retention near 100% after 500 cycles under 200 mA g–1. The stability originates from the conversion-alloying reversible reactivity of the amorphous matrix, which forms during the first lithiation from the initial high-entropy structure, and preserves the high level of cation disorder at the atomic scale. In the altered Li-storage mechanism in relation to the simple oxides, the unwanted aggregated metallic grains are not exsolved from the anode and therefore do not form highly lithiated phases characterized by large volumetric changes. Also, the electrochemical activity of Mg from the oxide matrix can be clearly observed. Because the studied compound was prepared by a conventional solid-state route, implementation of the presented approach is facile and appears usable for any oxide anode material containing a high-entropy mixture of elements.

Megakaryocytes (MKs) are rare, large, hematopoietic cells that canonically have the role of producing platelets. Advances in single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) have revealed a previously under-appreciated degree of MK heterogeneity suggesting that both murine and human MKs may perform functions beyond platelet production. Among other inflammatory molecules, these studies identified that select MK subsets express major histocompatibility complex (MHC II) antigen presentation-associated transcripts and display an upregulation of antigen processing pathways. Together, these findings suggest a potential immunoregulatory function of select MK subsets. However, functional validation substantiating these transcriptional signatures and the proposed MK immunoregulatory capacities has lagged, and the expression of MHC II in bone marrow MKs remains controversial.

The importance of feeding strategy for the long-term selective inhibition of nitrite-oxidising bacteria (NOB) was demonstrated by comparison of laboratory-scale bioreactors: Completely Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) and Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR). Moreover, the effect of the change of reactor operation regime from CSTR to SBR was demonstrated. Sludge liquor containing ammonia nitrogen in a range of 970–1500 mg L−1was the influent of the reactors. The experiments were performed at (23 ± 2)°C, with high concentration of dissolved oxygen (up to 8 mg L−1) and with unlimited sludge retention time. In the SBR, permanent restriction of NOB activity was achieved for more than 700 days by the strong inhibition effect of fluctuating concentrations of free ammonia and free nitrous acid during the operational cycles of SBR. In contrast, nitrite-oxidising bacteria were able to gradually adapt to the conditions prevailing in CSTR and produce nitrate although the concentration of free ammonia and free nitrous acid significantly exceeded inhibition limits for NOB activity in this system. Transferring the reactor operation regime from CSTR to SBR resulted in immediate and permanent inhibition of NOB activity in the reactor.

In this work, the Mössbauer spectroscopy employed in a study of point defect formation in intermetallic phases of the B2 structure from the Fe-Al system as a function of Al concentration. We present the values of the 57Fe isomer shift and quadruple splitting for the components describing the point defect in the local environment of a Mössbauer nuclide. The concentration of the Fe vacancies and Fe atoms substituting Al (Fe-AS) are determined. The results shown that an increase in Al content causes an increase in vacancy and Fe-AS concentration.

Nickel-based single-crystal superalloys are widely used for production of high pressure turbine blades. The studied blades were obtained in an ALD Vacuum Technologies furnace by the Bridgman technique. Crystallization process was carried out with drawing rates of 3 mm/min and 5 mm/min. The dendrite microstructure based on the γ/γ’ phases and their defects was characterized using X-Ray topography, Laue diffraction, transmission electron microscopy. The defect structure samples were examined with the positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. It was found that crystal orientation, lattice parameter of γ’ phase and concentration of defects are correlated. The defect concentration increases in some areas which was the result of deviation of the primary dendrite arm from crystallization direction . Only one type of point defects was detected.

The structure, point defect and ordering parameter of Fe25Al samples is examined with the Mössbauer spectroscopy Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy XRD and SEM. The studies are carried out for samples in as-cast state and after heat treatments: annealing for 24 hours at 900C (or 1050C) and either slow cooling with furnace or quenching to oil. Among the research method used, Mössbauer spectroscopy for determination of hyperfine structure parameters was adopted. These parameters, sensitive to changes in spin and charge electron densities in the nearest neighbourhood of a Mössbauer isotope nucleus, caused by specific configurations of atoms, are directly connected with the degree of ordering of a compound. Spectral analysis has been carried out using an authors’ software developed based on a theoretical model relating the shape of a Mössbauer spectrum to the sample microstructure. It has been shown that Mössbauer spectroscopy enables quantitative evaluation of the degree of ordering of phases occurring in samples characterised by large graining, in the case of which it is not possible to determine the long-range order parameter by X-ray diffraction. The PALS method only one type of defects is detected. The positron lifetime in these defects (V) suggests that they are quenched-in Fe-monovacancies (VFe). The vacancy concentration strongly depends on the rate of cooling.

Vacancies occupying different sub-lattices of D03 structure of Fe3Al alloy were investigated by the full potential linearized augmented plane wave method. The calculations basing on the super-cell approach have been performed for the vacancy concentrations of 1.6 and 3 at.%. For both concentrations the sub-lattice preference for vacancy location was determined. The dependence of vacancy formation energy on magnetic state of structure has been found. The positron lifetimes for the annihilation in the bulk (Fe3Al) and in vacancies have been investigated basing on the ab initio results for the electron density. The effect of vacancies on spin magnetic moment and hy-perfine parameters of Fe atoms neighboring the vacancy was examined. The results are discussed and compared with the data available.

Magnetic properties of the Fe76.2Nb5.7B13.3Gd4.8, Fe69.6Nb5.2B12.2Gd13, Fe76.2Nb5.7B13.3Y4.8, Fe69.6Nb5.2B12.2Y13 bulk nanocrystalline alloys (mould casting technique) are presented and discussed. Measurements were carried out by the means of SQUID magnetometer (temperature range 2 K – 400 K, field up to 7 T) and magnetic balance (temperatures up to 1100 K). Microstructure was studied by the Mössbauer spectroscopy at room temperature. It was shown that the samples are nonocrystalline with α-Fe and different Fe-B, Y/Gd-Fe or Y/Gd-Fe-B compounds. The preparation method as well as the Gd addition causes a magnetic hardening of the studied alloys.

The positron lifetime in these defects (V) suggests that they are quenched-in Fe-monovacancies (VFe). The vacancy concentration strongly depends on the rate of cooling. Besides, V also depends slightly on the rate of cooling of the material. This fact suggests, according to the predictions of latest theoretical calculations, that V is sensitive to the atomic configuration in the nearest neighborhood of VFe, which give hope to estimate the degree of atomic ordering in alloys by the PALS technique.

We have observed that doping CuCr2Se4 with tin introduces and then increases the tetrahedral deformation of the spinel structure, which can be connected with the Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion due to Cr2+ ions in antiprismatic environment. The presence of Cr2+ is corroborated by the increase of the saturation magnetization above the 6μB value expected for the 2 Cr3+ ions. In the high limit of the high Sn doping the deformation is decreased, which we attribute to elimination of the JT condition by the increased local distortions. With the tin doping the magnetic structure evolves from the ferromagnet, through spin-glass like to the antiferromagnetic due to increased AF coupling in the system. This is corroborated by the decreasing transition temperature and the Curie-Weiss parameter.

The aim of the work is to search possibility for preparation of the Mn2VSn and V2MnSn Heusler-type compounds. We have carried out the 119Sn-Mössbauer spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction studies on the some Mn0.5V0.25 Sn0.25 and V0.5Mn0.25Sn0.25 solid solutions prepared by arc melting of the constituent metals. Combining an independent information about atomic structure from X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy it was possible to identify main chemical environments responsible for the magnetic ordering observed in the samples. The studies revealed that investigated alloys are characterized by existence of the binary compounds, namely V2Sn3, V3Sn and Mn3Sn, with different extension in Mn and V atomic concentration, respectively. No ternary compounds were found in investigated systems.

Single phase materials with general formula CdxMeyCr2Se4 (where Me = Mn, Sn) were obtained using solid state synthesis method. Both compounds are ferromagnets with TC =115K (Sn) and 135K (Mn). The values of Curie-Weiss parameter ΘC-W = 135K (Sn) and 145K (Mn) are higher than respective values of TC indicating a presence of competing antiferromagnetic component. The values of lattice parameters are consistent with Sn and Mn replacing Cd. Slight cadmium deficiency has been also observed.

This work presents the results of investigations using Mössbauer spectroscopy technique and XRD, and their interpretation concerning precipitations and transformation of iron carbides and retained austenite stabilization. It also discusses changes in hardened matrix during tempering in relation to previously conducted dilatometric, microscopic and mechanical examinations. This research was carried out using a new high-carbon alloy 120MnCrMoV8-6-4-2 steel, which was designed in 1998, in Phase Transformations Research Group at the AGH UST. The influence of the tempering time on the mechanical and chemical stability of retained austenite and on the products of its transformation, nucleation and solubility of iron carbides and cementite nucleation and growth, was determined.

In the Mössbauer effect, two types of samples are investigated: Fe-Al alloys with few additives obtained by induction melting and Al-rich metallic powders produced by the self-decomposition method and intensive grinding of high energy in the electro-magneto-mechanical mill. The systematic studies of non-stoichiometric phases from Fe-Al system obtained by selfpropagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) were the aim of the present work. Investigations were performed using 57Fe transmission Mössbauer spectroscopy. The presence of nonsteichiomertic FeAl, FeAl2 and Fe2Al5 phases was found. It is can be concluded that the studied powder material is in non-equilibrium state. As the result of milling process the contents of FeAl phase increase whereas of FeAl2 and Fe2Al5 ones decrease. The determined crystal structure parameters and the hyperfine interaction parameters are presented and discussed.

The Fe-Al-X and Fe-Al-Ni-X (X = Fe,Ni,Cu,Cr) metallic powders obtained by the selfdecomposition method and next intensive grinding in an electro-magneto-mechanical mill were examined by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). Morphology of powders was determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) whereas energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was applied to identify the composition of phases. The FeAlX and FeAlNiX phases both of B2 type structure were found besides small amounts of Al(OH)3 and rest of metallic additions.

Modern MEMS technology for vibrations measurement and integrated humidity/temperature sensors application for structural monitoring is presented. The article discusses the importance of running during holidays, especially Christmas. Jeff Potteiger, an exercise physiologist, said that runners who stop running within Christmas and discontinued until January are drained 30 percent of their cardiovascular fitness. Stabilization of high Li ion conductive cubic Li7La3Zr2O12(LLZ) by Ge substitution in air, N2/O2and N2atmospheres are studied by high temperature XRD (HT-XRD) of Ge-added tetragonal LLZ (Ge-LLZ). A formation of low temperature cubic phase caused by CO2absorption during storage of the Ge-LLZ is observed at about 160∘C in all atmospheres. Additionally, impurity formation of La2Zr2O7and La2O3also occurs in all atmospheres. On the other hand, stabilization of cubic phase by substitution of Ge is largely influenced by the atmosphere. The cubic phase is observed at 40∘C after heating Ge-LLZ to 700∘C in air while only tetragonal phase appeared after heating in N2/O2. It is concluded that the heating atmosphere largely influences substitution of Ge, resulting in stabilization of the high Li ion conductive cubic phase.

This paper is focused on Ba1-xSrx(Ce0.75Zr0.25)0.9Nd0.1O2.95proton-conducting oxides, for which the effect of substitution of barium by strontium in a full range of compositions is studied. Crystal lattice symmetry, proton conductivity and stability in CO2atmosphere are discussed. Substitution of barium by strontium reduces toxicity and does not deteriorate chemical stability, however, crystal lattice of the strontium-substituted perovskites is more distorted, causing reduction of proton conductivity more than one order of magnitude. Balance between opposite tendencies can be found at low Srcontent, e.g., 25 at.%.
