Determining the association of Pb–Zn(-Ag) mineralization with granite is crucial for understanding metallogeny and identifying exploration targets. The genesis of Pb–Zn-Ag-Sb deposits and their genetic association with Sb(-Au) deposits and granite-associated Sn-W deposits in the Tethys Himalaya of southern Tibet, China, remains controversial. Our comprehensive study of in situ element compositions and sulfur isotopes of sulfides, together with in situ quartz oxygen isotopes for the Zhaxikang Pb–Zn-Ag-Sb deposit, sheds light on this issue. LA-ICP-MS analyses of early sulfides in manganosiderite veins, coupled with C-O isotopes of manganosiderite, indicate that the early fluids were enriched in Pb, Zn, Ag, Sb, Sn, and Cu, originating from magmatic fluids mixing with meteoric water. The early formed sulfides underwent fluid-mediated remobilization and dissolution, releasing many metallic elements (e.g., Pb, Zn, and Ag) into later As-Sb-rich fluids. These elements reprecipitated as Fe-poor sphalerite, As-rich pyrite, and abundant Sb-Pb sulfosalts with minor Ag-bearing minerals. Oxygen isotopes of quartz indicate that the later fluids were derived from pulsed releases of magmatic fluids mixing with meteoric water. In situ sulfur isotopes of three generations of pyrite indicate that early Pb–Zn(-Ag) sulfide precipitation was linked to magmatic sulfur, whereas precipitation of the later sulfosalts and stibnite involved external sulfur with relatively lower sulfur isotopes compared with early mineralization. We argue that Pb–Zn-Ag-Sb deposits in the Tethys Himalaya resulted from two distinct mineralization pulses. The early Pb–Zn(-Ag) mineralization was associated with crustal magmatic rocks (e.g., leucogranite), followed by the overprinting of later Sb-rich magmatic fluids. Notably, the later magmatic fluids responsible for Zhaxikang Pb–Zn-Ag-Sb mineralization were also associated with the regional Sb(-Au) deposits in the Tethys Himalaya.

AbstractThis paper explores young people’s narratives about BookTok and volitional reading. The data consist of narrative interviews with eight students (all girls) from two different classes in year 1 and year 2 of a preparatory programme for higher education, that is, students aged 17–18 years old. Using the framework of Wenger’s notion of communities of practice and Bamberg’s theory of narrative positioning, the findings indicate that the volitional reading practices described by the participants are strongly characterised by social, physical, and emotional dimensions that are generated and made possible by the book as an artefact. The findings also show that young people use the digital media platform TikTok and its subcommunity BookTok as a resource in constructing their own volitional reading practices and as a means to strengthen their reader identities. In view of their use of BookTok, this article contributes insights into young people’s volitional reading practices and the construction of reader identities outside of school. The results also contribute to the ongoing discussion about how to support and motivate young people to read literature.

AbstractThe Chebyshev Rational Approximation Method (CRAM) has become one of the dominant methods for solving the Bateman equations for nuclear fuel depletion analysis. Since its introduction over a decade ago, several improvements have been made to CRAM improving its accuracy and reducing its run time. We analyzed its run time using two previously published methods for solving the CRAM system of equations, direct matrix inversion (DMI) and sparse Gaussian elimination (SGE), for depletion systems of varying numbers of nuclides to see how the two methods perform relative to one another. In addition to these two methods, we introduced the Gauss-Seidel (GS) method for solving the CRAM system of equations and compared its performance relative to DMI and SGE for depletion systems with varying numbers of nuclides. We demonstrated that for practical purposes, GS is faster than SGE and DMI and achieves a practical level of accuracy. All testing was performed using the CRAM implementation in the Griffin reactor physics analysis application.

The Yulekenhalasu porphyry Cu-Mo deposit (0.2 Mt Cu at 1.04 wt% and 0.012 Mt Mo at 0.06 wt%) is located in the Devonian Halasu copper belt, East Junggar block, northwest China. At Yulekenhalasu, Cu and Mo mineralization commonly occurs as disseminated sulfides or veinlets in porphyry-related alteration zones. Five alteration stages have been identified, including porphyry-type alteration, i.e., sodic-calcic (stage I), potassic (stage IIa), propylitic (stage IIb), and phyllic (stage III) alteration, and widespread late Cu sulfide-bearing veins (stage IV) cross-cutting porphyry-type alteration, plus a post-ore fault-controlled argillic alteration (stage V). Stages IV and V have overprinted porphyry-type alteration (stages I–III).

Hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) recipients are at risk for thromboembolic and bleeding complications. There is limited evidence regarding the optimal approach to managing venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis in hospitalized patients undergoing HCT. In this retrospective cohort study, we evaluated the incidence of bleeding and VTE events in hospitalized HCT patients who received VTE prophylaxis per our institution’s VTE Prophylaxis Protocol (VPP), with either enoxaparin 40 mg subcutaneously daily or heparin 5 000 units subcutaneously twice daily, compared to historical controls who did not receive VTE prophylaxis. The primary outcome was a composite of major bleeding events, clinically relevant non-major bleeding (CRNMB), and minor bleeding. The secondary outcome was a composite of VTE events. A total of 614 patients were evaluated, including 278 prior to and 336 after implementation of VPP. VTE prophylaxis resulted in no difference in bleeding events (15.1% in the pre-VPP group vs. 14.6% in the post-VPP group, p= 0.86) or composite of major and CRNMB events (0.72% vs. 0.30%, p= 0.59). There was a trend toward lower incidence of VTE events in the post-VPP group which did not reach statistical significance (8.6% vs. 6.0%, p= 0.20). We conclude that VTE prophylaxis does not pose additional bleeding risk in HCT patients.

This study used logistic regression to determine whether there is a significant difference in pedestrian–vehicle interaction severity at side street green and exclusive phase pedestrian signals, and to evaluate whether waiting- and crossing times are useful predictors of pedestrian–vehicle conflict. To do this, data related to the physical characteristics of each intersection and to the crossing experience of every pedestrian were gathered at 32 signalized intersections in Connecticut. At each intersection, conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles were classified into four distinct severity levels: undisturbed passage, potential conflict, minor conflict, and serious conflict. After interpreting the results of six different logistic regression refinements, it was determined that waiting time, crossing time, the number of lanes, annual average daily traffic, pedestrian compliance, phasing, and the presence of crosswalks were all useful predictors. Based on the results of this analysis, low wait time and crossing time values were associated with a decrease in the odds of a conflict. It was also determined that exclusive phase signals reduced the odds of a conflict by 85%. Future research should investigate variables associated with different land development patterns and demographic information. Along with this, the crossing experience of individuals who do not comply with pedestrian signals should also be evaluated.

The study tested the use of Viscobleach as a multi-scouring agent for pretreating cellulosic fabrics (cotton, viscose, and linen) instead of using traditional agents (caustic soda, soda ash, and hydrogen peroxide). The results showed an increase in whiteness and absorbency for viscose and linen fabrics pretreated with Viscobleach. The color strength (K/S) increased for all shades of cotton and for medium and dark shades of viscose and linen. The study also showed that the dye pick-up was higher and dye wastage lower with the Viscobleach pretreatment. The color fastness to wash and rubbing was rated 4-5 for all samples.

Pulmonary edema is a common clinical problem and lung ultrasound (LUS) presents an efficient method for evaluating this pathology. This study aims to investigate if a clinically efficient LUS protocol can quantify the level of extravascular lung fluid in patients receiving hemodialysis, and to develop a simplified B‐line scoring system based on this protocol. A simple 8‐area LUS approach was used for the assessment of the extravascular fluid status in patients before, during, and after receiving hemodialysis. The LUS assessments were compared to the amount of removed fluid over time. To determine the best B‐line score system, different scorings for each zone were tested in a linear mixed model with pseudo R‐square model fit against removed fluid. The B‐line score was further validated through correlations with changes in oxygen saturation, grade of dyspnea, and body weight over time. A total of 53 patients were included and examined on 108 hemodialysis occasions. Median fluid removal was 2.3 L. The B‐line score model with best fit was a score of 0 points in a zone with 0 or 1 B‐lines, 1 point with 2 or 3 B‐lines, 2 points with 3 or more B‐lines, and 3 points with any interstitial confluence. Using this B‐line score, we found a significant association with amount of removed fluid, oxygen saturation, grade of dyspnea, and change in body weight. A straightforward protocol for LUS and B‐line score system was shown valid for quantification of pulmonary edema and fluid removal in hemodialysis patients. The scoring system developed here can be useful also in other patient groups, but this requires further validation.

AbstractTraditionally, analysts solve the Bateman depletion equations to calculate the nuclide number density (NND) of each nuclide since these densities impact other reactor parameters, such as reactivity, as they change. Many quantities of interest, such as radiation damage, are calculated using simple integration methods, assuming that the NNDs are constant over a given depletion interval. However, the NNDs are time dependent, which can be accurately represented only by the Bateman depletion equations. We propose that these quantities can be calculated simultaneously with the NNDs within the Bateman depletion equations, preserving the coupled nature of these quantities to the time-dependent NNDs. We implemented this functionality in Griffin, demonstrating that only minor code modifications were necessary in order to accommodate an evaluation of these quantities in the Bateman depletion equations. The Chebyshev Rational Approximation Method was used to successfully solve for these additional quantities in the Bateman depletion equations. For radiation damage, the results calculated by Griffin were very accurate, differing by less than 2.5% from an analytical benchmark. For other quantities, the discrepancy between quantities calculated by the Bateman depletion equations versus those calculated by the Forward Euler method exceeded 10% for decay energy and 2% for fissions per initial heavy metal atom and kinetic energy released per unit mass when few depletion intervals were used. As the number of depletion intervals increased, both methods began to converge as expected.

ABSTRACTThis article investigates the widely implemented compact neighbourhood type and aims to stimulate fresh thinking in Anglo-American urban enquiry by building on the work of Massey and others to illuminate relational complexities between sociality and space. The authors present findings from research in Stockholm, which reveal spatial porosity and novel social meanings existing between polarised notions of connectedness and separateness. Such insights may be overlooked without adequate recognition of agency in relational investigations. Thus, renewed emphasis on agential capacity in both people and built form would benefit planning efforts. The neighbourhoods investigated foster patterns of “just right” (lagom) urbanity in which individuals find temporary reprieve and sociospatial mediation amidst wider metropolitan challenges. Future research could determine if neighbourhoods situated elsewhere foster similar interrelations, and – if so – what impacts on human well-being result. The authors urge theorists to undertake more-than-relational research in other contexts and with other neighbourhood types.

Crop yield improvement during the last decades has relied on increasing the ratio of the economic organ to the total aboveground biomass, known as the harvest index (HI). In most crop models, HI is set as a parameter; this empirical approach does not consider that HI not only depends on plant genotype, but is also affected by the environment. An alternative is to simulate allocation mechanistically, as in the LPJ-GUESS crop model, which simulates HI based on daily growing conditions and the crop development stage. Simulated HI is critical for agricultural research due to its economic importance, but it also can validate the robust representation of production processes. However, there is a challenge to constrain parameter values globally for the allocation processes. Therefore, this paper aims to evaluate the sensitivity of yield and HI of wheat and maize simulated with LPJ-GUESS to eight production allocation-related parameters and identify the most suitable parameter values for global simulations. The nitrogen demand reduction after anthesis, the minimum leaf carbon to nitrogen ratio (C:N) and the range of leaf C:N strongly affected carbon assimilation and yield, while the retranslocation of labile stem carbon to grains and the retranslocation rate of nitrogen and carbon from vegetative organs to grains after anthesis mainly influenced HI. A global database of observed HI for both crops was compiled for reference to constrain simulations before calibrating parameters for yield against reference data. Two high- and low-yielding maize cultivars emerged from the calibration, whilst spring and winter cultivars were found appropriate for wheat. The calibrated version of LPJ-GUESS improved the simulation of yield and HI at the global scale for both crops, providing a basis for future studies exploring crop production under different climate and management scenarios.

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is an understudied cause of myocardial infarction primarily affecting women. It is not known to what extent SCAD is genetically distinct from other cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerotic coronary artery disease (CAD). Here we present a genome-wide association meta-analysis (1,917 cases and 9,292 controls) identifying 16 risk loci for SCAD. Integrative functional annotations prioritized genes that are likely to be regulated in vascular smooth muscle cells and artery fibroblasts and implicated in extracellular matrix biology. One locus containing the tissue factor gene F3, which is involved in blood coagulation cascade initiation, appears to be specific for SCAD risk. Several associated variants have diametrically opposite associations with CAD, suggesting that shared biological processes contribute to both diseases, but through different mechanisms. We also infer a causal role for high blood pressure in SCAD. Our findings provide novel pathophysiological insights involving arterial integrity and tissue-mediated coagulation in SCAD and set the stage for future specific therapeutics and preventions.

Abstract:Edith Wharton’s only extant full-length play, The Shadow of a Doubt, was discovered by Laura Rattray and Mary Chinery in 2016 and published in the Edith Wharton Review in 2017. In summer 2023 it received its first full professional production at the Shaw Festival (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario). This review describes and evaluates the production, as well as the play’s links to later works by Wharton.

AbstractThis paper introduces and evaluates the Adding and Doubling Method (ADM) for solving the Bateman equations for depletion systems with varying numbers of nuclides and compares it to the Chebyshev Rational Approximation Method (CRAM), both implemented in the reactor physics analysis application Griffin. ADM, when applied to the Crank-Nicolson Finite Difference method, can produce results comparable in accuracy and precision to CRAM with comparable run times for systems with 35 or 297 nuclides. For systems with more than 300 nuclides, the matrix-matrix operations required by ADM are significantly more costly than the matrix-vector operations required by CRAM, making CRAM the more efficient method for systems with large numbers of nuclides. ADM is an accurate method that maintains other advantages over CRAM in that it does not depend on pre-generated coefficients or require complex number operations. ADM also manages to outperform CRAM by a factor of more than 250 in terms of run time for depletion systems that require multiple Bateman solves while the depletion matrix and time step size remain constant over all depletion intervals.

AbstractThe COVID-19 pandemic created an abrupt need for effective remote clinical experiences for senior clinical veterinary students. Subsequently, the authors created virtual clinics. This activity was derived from a problem-based learning (PBL) model wherein students designed clinical cases and participated through virtual role play as clients and clinicians. The purpose of this article is to describe virtual clinics and to report data from focus groups of participating students and faculty facilitators from two institutions regarding the positive and negative aspects of the shift in practice. A few common emerging themes included that case rounds were fun and engaging, students could learn at their own pace, and peer-to-peer learning opportunities had perceived value. Themes are reflected against the pedagogical literature to draw out areas that resonated. Students felt this activity was more engaging than listening to a discussion of a case they had no ownership of, and facilitators agreed that the peer-to-peer interactions added to student engagement. Additionally, students developed deeper knowledge about the underlying disease process and clinical presentation of their case, which required independent and self-directed learning, enabling students to think about a case from a client’s perspective. By participating in these activities, students developed skills of classroom-to-clinic transitional value. While virtual clinics should not replace in-person clinical experiences, this activity might be useful to facilitate students’ transition from a structured classroom setting to a less-structured clinical experience.

This phase 1b trial (NCT02670044) evaluated venetoclax-idasanutlin in patients with relapsed/refractory (R/R) acute myeloid leukemia (AML) ineligible for cytotoxic chemotherapy. Two-dimensional dose escalation (DE, n = 50) was performed for venetoclax daily with idasanutlin on days 1 to 5 in 28-day cycles, followed by dosing schedule optimization (n = 6) to evaluate reduced venetoclax schedules (21-/14-day dosing). Common adverse events (occurring in ≥40% of patients) included diarrhea (87.3% of patients), nausea (74.5%), vomiting (52.7%), hypokalemia (50.9%), and febrile neutropenia (45.5%). During DE, across all doses, composite complete remission (CRc; CR + CR with incomplete blood count recovery + CR with incomplete platelet count recovery) rate was 26.0% and morphologic leukemia-free state (MLFS) rate was 12%. For anticipated recommended phase 2 doses (venetoclax 600 mg + idasanutlin 150 mg; venetoclax 600 mg + idasanutlin 200 mg), the combined CRc rate was 34.3% and the MLFS rate was 14.3%. Pretreatment IDH1/2 and RUNX1 mutations were associated with higher CRc rates (50.0% and 45.0%, respectively). CRc rate in patients with TP53 mutations was 20.0%, with responses noted among those with co-occurring IDH and RUNX1 mutations. In 12 out of 36 evaluable patients, 25 emergent TP53 mutations were observed; 22 were present at baseline with low TP53 variant allele frequency (median 0.0095% [range, 0.0006-0.4]). Venetoclax-idasanutlin showed manageable safety and encouraging efficacy in unfit patients with R/R AML. IDH1/2 and RUNX1 mutations were associated with venetoclax-idasanutlin sensitivity, even in some patients with co-occurring TP53 mutations; most emergent TP53 clones were preexisting. Our findings will aid ongoing/future trials of BCL-2/MDM2 inhibitor combinations. This trial was registered at www.clinicaltrials.gov as #NCT02670044.

Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is a rare hematologic malignancy with historically poor outcomes and no worldwide consensus treatment approach. Unique among most hematologic malignancies for its frequent cutaneous involvement, BPDCN can also invade other extramedullary compartments, including the central nervous system. Generally affecting older adults, many patients are unfit to receive intensive chemotherapy, and although hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is preferred for younger, fit individuals, not all are eligible. One recent therapeutic breakthrough is that all BPDCNs express CD123 (IL3Rα) and that this accessible surface marker can be pharmacologically targeted. The first-in-class agent for BPDCN, tagraxofusp, which targets CD123, was approved in December 2018 in the United States for patients with BPDCN aged ≥2 years. Despite favorable response rates in the frontline setting, many patients still relapse in the setting of monotherapy, and outcomes in patients with relapsed/refractory BPDCN remain dismal. Therefore, novel approaches targeting both CD123 and other targets are actively being investigated. To begin to formally address the state of the field, we formed a new collaborative initiative, the North American BPDCN Consortium (NABC). This group of experts, which includes a multidisciplinary panel of hematologists/oncologists, hematopoietic stem cell transplant physicians, pathologists, dermatologists, and pediatric oncologists, was tasked with defining the current standard of care in the field and identifying the most important research questions and future directions in BPDCN. The position findings of the NABC’s inaugural meetings are presented herein.

The distinction between alexithymia and coping in relation to posttraumatic stress has not been fully explored. The present study examined the extent to which alexithymia explained unique variance in posttraumatic stress, beyond the variance explained by coping, in a sample of trauma-exposed adults (N= 706; Mage= 19.41 years, SD= 1.5; 77.1% female). Then, we explored the effect of race on these associations, comparing participants who identified as Black (n= 275) to those who identified as White (n= 337). Avoidant-emotional coping showed stronger correlations (compared with problem-focused and active-emotional coping) with total alexithymia, difficulty identifying feelings, and difficulty describing feelings. In regression analyses, we found alexithymia explained unique variance in posttraumatic stress severity beyond the effect of coping. Results did not differ by racial identity. These findings suggest that despite some overlap between alexithymia and coping, each shows unique relations with posttraumatic stress.

The Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) has a rapidly expanding distribution in North America, but many aspects of its ecology remain relatively understudied, particularly in rural areas of its core range. We collected GPS telemetry data from 93 opossums in a rural, non-agricultural landscape in South Carolina, USA (2018–2019) to examine factors influencing space use and resource selection. Estimated male home ranges (99% utilization distributions) were on average 50% larger than those of females (mean home range 115.9 ± 103.7 ha vs 76.7 ± 75.0 ha). The home range size decreased on average by 20% with each 20% increase in deciduous land cover but was not affected by season or other landscape factors. Core area sizes (65% utilization distributions) were not influenced by sex (mean core area size 29.1 ± 23.7 ha and 22.4 ha ± 13.8 for males and females, respectively) or season, but the core area size decreased by 14% with each 400 m increase in distance from a permanent water source. Resource selection by opossums primarily occurred at the landscape level. Both males and females generally selected for wetlands while avoiding pine forests and developed/open areas, likely the result of differences in resource availability and predation risk between habitats. Opossums also tended to select for linear features such as unpaved roads and edge habitat, which may facilitate movement across the landscape. The home ranges we documented are among the largest recorded for opossums in the USA, likely the result of the relatively low resource abundance throughout our study area due to comparatively minimal anthropogenic influence.

Agriculture provides people with food, but poses environmental challenges. Viacomprehensive observations on an agricultural land at Qvidja in Southern Finland, we were able to show that soil-emitted compounds (mainly ammonia and amines), together with available sulfuric acid, form new aerosol particles which then grow to climate-relevant sizes by the condensation of extremely low volatile organic compounds originating from a side production of photosynthesis (compounds emitted by ground and surrounding vegetation). We found that intensive local clustering events, with particle formation rates at 3 nm about 5–10 times higher than typical rates in boreal forest environments, occur on around 30% of all days. The requirements for these clustering events to occur were found to be clear sky, a low wind speed to accumulate the emissions from local agricultural land, particularly ammonia, the presence of low volatile organic compounds, and sufficient gaseous sulfuric acid. The local clustering will then contribute to regional new particle formation. Since the agricultural land is much more effective per surface area than the boreal forest in producing aerosol particles, these findings provide insight into the participation of agricultural lands in climatic cooling, counteracting the climatic warming effects of farming.

AbstractSimulation in veterinary education provides a safe and ethical alternative to using live animals, but most simulators are single purpose and unvalidated. In this study, canine training manikins were created using readily available materials to teach fine needle aspiration (FNA) of peripheral lymph nodes, jugular venipuncture, cephalic venipuncture, intravenous catheterization, and cystocentesis. Undergraduate subjects were prospectively enrolled and stratified by veterinary experience prior to randomization into two groups. Students were taught a new skill each week through a written description of the technique, video training, and hands-on practice (live animal vs. manikin). The following week, participants were scored on the performance of the previous week’s skill on a live animal using a standardized rubric by reviewers blinded to the training group. Six weeks later, the assessment was repeated for all skills. Scores were compared between groups and time points using repeated-measures ANOVA after logarithmic transformation. p< .05 was significant. There were no significant differences in scores for any of the skills between the groups immediately following or 6 weeks after training. Initial proficiency and short-term retention of clinical skills do not differ for students trained using a manikin versus a live dog.

Learning objectives (LO) are the foundation of a competency-based curriculum, but no studies assess how students use LO for exam preparation and/or their general attitudes toward LO. Therefore, the objectives were to evaluate how much veterinary students use LO to study, assess student attitudes toward simple and expanded LO, and determine if LO type impacts grade performance. An alternative-treatment design with pre-test and nonrandom groups was used. Veterinary students in the Endocrine Systems course in the 2019 spring (n= 89) and fall (n= 86) semesters were invited to participate and provided with simple and expanded LO, respectively. After an examination, participants completed an online survey before and after receiving their grade. Overall, 114 students (65%) responded. The percentage of students using simple versus expanded LO was not statistically different (χ2= 1.874, df= 1, p= .171). Fifty-five students did not use LO; the majority (76.4%) preferred other study methods. Independent samples t-tests found no significant differences in student perceptions of helpfulness (t(30) = −1.118, p= .272), format (t(29) = 0.813, p= .423), or relevance (t(30) = 0.326, p= .747) between simple and expanded LO. Students agreed that LO were helpful (M= 3.33) and well formatted (M= 3.42) and that the provided information was relevant and detailed (M= 3.36). An ANOVA tested whether exam grade differed between students using simple versus expanded LO and for students who did not use LO; no significant differences were found (F(2,78) = .087, p= .917). In conclusion, students did not prefer more detailed LO and LO use did not impact grade performance.
