Visceral organ “cross talk” is suspected to contribute to multiorgan symptomatology found in conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome and interstitial cystitis. The goal of the present study was to investigate the short- and long-term effects of acute colitis on bladder detrusor muscle contractility. We hypothesized that inflammation of the colon leads to changes in bladder function via direct changes in detrusor smooth muscle contractility. In this study, colonic inflammation was induced in male rats via an enema of trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS) (50 mg/kg, 0.5 ml, 25% ethanol). Colitis was confirmed using gross morphology, histology, and measurements of myeloperoxidase activity. Saline enema-treated rats served as controls. Three, 15, and 30 days postenema treatment, bladder detrusor muscle contractility was investigated in response to electrical field stimulation (EFS), cholinergic agonism with carbachol (CCh), and KCl. During active colonic inflammation (day 3post-TNBS enema), the bladder detrusor muscle appeared normal and showed no significant inflammation. However, abnormalities in bladder detrusor muscle contractility occurred in response to EFS and CCh but not KCl. During and after recovery from colonic inflammation (days 15and 30post-TNBS enema), changes in bladder detrusor muscle contractility in response to EFS and CCh returned to control levels. We found that a transient colonic inflammatory insult significantly attenuates the amplitude of bladder detrusor muscle contractions in vitro, at least in part, through changes in cholinergic innervation, which are reversible after recovery from the colitis.

Abstract The Neotropical Phyllostomidae family is the third largest in the order Chiroptera, with 56 genera and 140 species. Most researchers accept this family as monophyletic but its species are anatomically diverse and complex, leading to disagreement on its systematics and evolutionary relationships. Most of the genera of Phyllostomidae have highly conserved karyotypes but with intense intergeneric variability, which makes any comparative analysis using classical banding difficult. The use of chromosome painting is a modern way of genomic comparison on the cytological level, and will clarify the intense intergenus chromosomal variability in Phyllostomidae. Whole chromosome probes of species were produced as a tool for evolutionary studies in this family from two species from different subfamilies, Phyllostomus hastatus and Carollia brevicauda, which have large morphological and chromosomal differences, and these probes were used in reciprocal chromosome painting. The hybridization of the Phyllostomus probes on the Carollia genome revealed 24 conserved segments, while the Carollia probes on the Phyllostomus genome detected 26 segments. Many chromosome rearrangements have occurred during the divergence of these two genera. The sequence of events suggested a large number of rearrangements during the differentiation of the genera followed by high chromosomal stability within each genus.

Summary: In vitro growth of rat atriocaval epithelial tumor cells (ACT-1) was enhanced by the inclusion of xenogeneic mouse adherent peritoneal exudate cells (PECs) in a two-layer soft agar system. A linear relationship was found between the number of cells plated and the number of colonies when ACT-1 tumor cells were plated at plating densities of between 1 and 5105 cell/60 mm plate (r=0.9,P<0.001). Inclusion of irradiated PECs in the bioassay for tumor stem cells resulted in a two and a half-fold increase in colony formation in three separate experiments (P<0.001).

A 35-item tourism impact scale was developed. It was derived from an initial pool of 147 impact items drawn from personal interviews and the literature, and it was refined using classical scale-development procedures. The scale comprises seven domains: social and cultural, economic, crowding and congestion, environmental, services, taxes, and community attitudes, although the latter two domains did not always emerge as independent factors. Testing was undertaken with three independent samples drawn from communities exhibiting different tourism characteristics. The scale was demonstrated to have dimensional distinctiveness and stability, internal consistency, content validity, and convergent validity. We describe the case of a 44-year-old male with a rare malignant neoplasm of the liver: an angiosarcoma. This case is interesting because there was no history of exposure to the known carcinogens for this malignancy, and no predisposing chronic medical condition. We believe that this was a case of primary hereditary angiosarcoma, which has been rarely reported in the literature.
