Abrasion of amorphous Ni-P alloys induces crystallization of the alloys. When an amorphous Ni-P alloy is abraded by abrasive particles, heat is generated locally on its surface and grooves are formed in the direction of abrasion. The heat generated by friction causes structural transformation of the amorphous Ni-P alloy, resulting in the formation of Ni and Ni5P4crystals along the grooves. Magnetic hard disks are fabricated by abrading an amorphous Ni-P substrate in the circumferential direction and sputtering CoNiCr/Cr on the abraded surface. It has been reported that the fabricated hard disks have magnetic anisotropy and high coercivity. It is considered that the magnetic anisotropy is caused by the Ni particles grown along the grooves of the amorphous Ni-P surface.
