AbstractPlatelet-rich plasma (PRP) is used for successful regeneration of female reproductive tissues. However, little is known about the effect of ovarian PRP treatment on oocyte and embryo quality. The objective of our study was to assess the role of autologous ovarian PRP treatment on ovarian reserve and number and quality of oocytes and embryos in women with poor ovarian response (POR) undergoing in-vitro fertilization cycles. A total of 66 women with POR were treated with ovarian PRP injection in two subsequent menstrual cycles. The antral follicle counts, serum anti-Mullerian hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone levels, fertilization rate, number and quality of oocytes, and embryos were assessed and compared between the cycle before and after PRP treatment. Ovarian PRP treatment resulted in insignificantly lower follicle-stimulating hormone levels, significantly higher antral follicle count, anti-Mullerian hormone, number of retrieved oocytes, and insignificantly higher fertilization rate. However, the mean number of Day 5 embryos (2.19 ± 1.45 vs. 1.58 ± 1.30, p = 0.01), the percentage of high-quality oocytes (45.29% ± 42.40% vs. 15.21% ± 30.24%, p < 0.01) and the percentage of grade-I blastocysts (52.10% ± 37.94% vs. 12.86% ± 22.97%, p < 0.01) were significantly higher after PRP treatment in comparison to the pretreatment period. Moreover, the mean MII oocyte quality (1.60 ± 0.54 vs. 2.31 ± 0.63, p < 0.01) and mean blastocyst quality (1.53 ± 0.45 vs. 2.42 ± 0.63, p < 0.01) were significantly improved in the post-treatment period. In conclusion, the applied autologous ovarian PRP treatment in poor responders may significantly improve oocyte and embryo quality.

This study uses a welfare state lens to examine disparities in Covid-19 infections and mortality rates between countries in Eastern Europe compared to West European democracies. Expanding on Esping-Andersen’s typology of welfare regimes, the authors compare six country groups to conduct a multivariate statistical analysis that, when controlling for economic and health differences, shows the number of cases and deaths per 100,000 to be significantly higher for Eastern Europe. In comparing First, Second, and Third Wave data, the difference in Covid-19 infections and mortality rates can be explained through stricter lockdown measures implemented in the East at the start of the First Wave. Overall higher numbers in the East reflect comparatively looser state measures in response to the Second and Third Waves as well as the lack of trust in government and the weak implementation of public health measures.

AbstractPreimplantation genetic testing (PGT) is presently the only option available for detecting genetic conditions in embryos created through in vitrofertilization (IVF) prior to implantation. Thus PGT eliminates the dilemma of pregnancy termination following unfavorable prenatal diagnosis test results. Complex chromosome rearrangements (CCRs), although very rarely reported in humans, represent a significant clinical problem for their carriers. CCRs include at least three breakpoints affecting two or more chromosomes. In three-breakpoint translocations, theoretically sixty-four different chromosomal sets are produced. Only two of them will be balanced and will lead to the birth of a phenotypically normal child. Therefore, CCR carriers are at increased risk of chromosomally unbalanced conceptions, resulting in spontaneous abortions or birth of offspring with intellectual disability and/or congenital anomalies. The reproductive options before such families are: natural conception followed by prenatal diagnosis; donor gametes; adoption or PGT. In this paper we discuss the current state of the PGT field and report on two PGT-cases for CCR in families with infertility and recurrent pregnancy losses. The families underwent IVF-PGT on day 3 and day 5 embryos and whole genome microarray analysis.
