AbstractPlutonium zwierleiniis a large plutoniumid centipede of great evolutionary interest, occurring with isolated populations along the western Mediterranean area, from Spain to Italy. Due to its rarity and the extreme paucity of available records, P. zwierleiniis among the least known Mediterranean chilopods, and scarce information is currently available on its ecology and natural history. Based on an extensive sampling effort carried out in Sicily between 2022 and 2023, we here provide additional occurrence localities for the species across Sicily, and new insights into its ecology. Overall, 29 novel Sicilian records of P. zwierleini, scattered across 21 localities, were collected thus increasing its known Sicilian distribution area by 117%, and the number of localities by 110%. The species was found in a wide range of habitats such as open areas, woods, buildings, and caves, characterizing Plutonium zwierleinias a habitat generalist, whose fine ecological preferendaneed to be further explored. Moreover, to explore the diet and behaviour of the species, some specimens were kept in captivity. The captive individuals fed mostly on dead or poorly mobile soft-bodied prey and inert food, without ever displaying predatory behaviour; this suggests that, contrarily to what is currently assumed, P. zwierleinimight be a scavenger rather than a predator. The potential distribution of Plutonium zwierleiniin Sicily was inferred based on georeferenced occurrence records and climatic variables. The implemented MaxEnt model forecasts the possible occurrence of P. zwierleinion the whole island, with the single exception of its south-easternmost part, possibly due to the local pattern of precipitation seasonality. We hope that the present work might pave the way for further surveys aimed at a better understanding of the ecology of Plutonium zwierleiniand the collection of new data in the other regions inhabited by this secretive species.

AimsIn an attempt to reverse multidrug resistance, in a recent trial of verapamil in association with doxorubicin, we used escalating doses of continuous intravenous (i.v.) verapamil under close haemodynamic monitoring. We report the pharmacokinetics of escalating doses of verapamil.

From the brown alga Dilophusligulatusa new secondary metabolite with antimicrobial activity, crenuladial 4, has been isolated and its structure determined.

Two previously unreported antibiotic metabolites, 2′,3′,4″-triacetoxy-3,4,5′,6′-tetrahydroxy-p-terphenyl (10) and 2′,3′-diacetoxy-3,4,5′,6′,4″-pentahydroxy-p-terphenyl (11), have been isolated from the basidiomycete Sarcodonleucopus. Their structures have been determined by chemical transformations and spectral analysis, including heteronuclear two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance methods.

Endothelins (ETs) are potent vasoconstrictor peptides that also participate in the regulation of endocrine function. Indeed, immunoreactive ET, ET mRNA and ET receptors have been found in the brain and the pituitary gland and ETs stimulate arginine vasopressin, LH, FSH, TSH and gonadotrophin-releasing hormone and inhibit prolactin release in vitro. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of ET-1 and ET-3, two members of this family, on corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH) release by explanted male rat hypothalami in vitroand on ACTH release by primary pituitary cell culture. ET-3 decreased basal CRH release in a concentration-related manner. The lowest effective concentration tested was 3 nmol/l but a more pronounced inhibitory effect was obtained at a concentration of 10 nmol/l. On the other hand, ET-1 did not have any detectable effect on basal CRH release. Neither ET-1 nor ET-3 had any effect on the release of CRH stimulated by potassium chloride. ET-1 increased basal ACTH release, whereas ET-3 did not have any effect. Both ET-1 and ET-3 suppressed the release of ACTH stimulated by 1 nmol CRH/l.These data suggest that both ET-1 and ET-3 are able to modulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function in vitro. However, they act at different levels and seem to have opposite effects. Indeed, while ET-1 stimulated pituitary ACTH release, ET-3, the peptide produced mainly in the brain, inhibited hypothalamic CRH release in vitro.Journal of Endocrinology(1994) 140,419–424
