A recent study conducted by researchers at the University Clinical Center of Serbia has found that the neural cell adhesion molecule L1 has a neuroprotective effect in the hippocampus of aged Alzheimer's disease model mice. The study involved injecting AAV-L1, a construct of the molecule, into the hippocampus of mice and observing the effects on neurodegeneration and synaptic density. The results showed that AAV-L1 injection improved the loss of granule cells and parvalbumin-positive interneurons in the hippocampus, as well as promoted the survival of inhibitory synapses. A new study has identified rare de novo mutations in SHANK2 in individuals with autism and/or mental retardation. SHANK2 encodes a scaffolding protein present in excitatory synapses. This finding sheds some light on the pathophysiology of social and cognitive disability.
