Much of what is known about non-resident fathers is based on studies conducted in North America and Europe, and on the accounts of only one family member. This article draws from a study which utilised a family systems perspective and obtained the views of four members of ten Black South African non-resident father families (N= 40) with infrequent father–child contact. The aim was to investigate if and how non-resident fathers’ contact with adolescent children was influenced by relationships with various family members. Individual interviews were conducted with each of the family member and thematically analysed. Here, we engage with one of the master themes that shows the circular dynamic in families in which various family members held implicit assumptions about who was responsible for father–child contact and, subsequently, did not view the responsibility to be theirs. Infrequent or lack of non-resident father–child contact should therefore be addressed as a family systems issue.

Mental health is a component of care that should be addressed for patients with burns while they are hospitalized. Unfortunately, dedicated burn psychotherapists are rare in burn centers in the United States (US), and it can take months for patients to be seen by a mental health professional after referral. Our burn center has a dedicated licensed clinical social worker who sees patients within 2 business days of referral. She uses cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which is designed to alleviate symptoms of anxiety, depression, and acute stress by modifying the individual’s maladaptive thoughts. To evaluate the timely use of CBT as a treatment for depression in patients with burns, we measured depressive symptoms before and after psychotherapy. Burn clinic nurses administered the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) depression screener as part of standard care. We computed difference scores to determine the change in PHQ-9 scores at both group and individual levels. At a group level, psychotherapy significantly improved symptoms of depression, indicated by a decreased mean PHQ-9 score. On an individual level, half of the patients (50.7%) experienced a meaningful improvement in their symptoms, indicated by a change in their PHQ-9 depression category, while 35.6% showed no change. Although it was not an effective solution for all patients in this study, timely use of CBT could be an important component of burn care for many and should be considered as part of standard care in burn centers across the US.

Study Design Systematic review.Objectives Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IOMN) has become a standard practice in the detection and prevention of nerve damage and postoperative deficit. While multicenter studies have addressed this inquiry, there have been no systematic reviews to date. This systematic review identifies the leading causes of IONM alerts during adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgeries.Methods Following PRISMA guidelines, a literature search was performed in PubMed and Embase. IONM alert causes were grouped by equivalent terms used across different studies and binned into larger categories, including surgical maneuver, Changes in blood pressure/temperature, Oxygenation, Anesthesia, Patient position, and Unknown.Results Inclusion criteria were studies on adult patients receiving ASD correction surgery using IONM with documented alert causes. 1544 references were included in abstract review, 128 in full text review, and 16 studies qualified for data extraction. From those studies, there was a total of 3945 adult patients with 299 IONM alerts. Surgical maneuver led the alert causes (258 alerts/86.3%), with signal loss most commonly occurring at correction or osteotomy (101/33.8% and 95/31.8% respectively). Pedicle screw placement caused 35 alerts (11.7%). Changes in temperature and blood pressure were the third largest category (34/11.4%).Conclusions The most frequent causes of IONM alerts in ASD surgery were surgical maneuvers such as correction, osteotomy, and pedicle screw placement. This information provides spine surgeons with a quantitative perspective on the causes of IONM changes and show that most occur at predictable times during ASD surgery.

Crochet is a handicraft which involves yarn and a single tool of similar size to a pencil, with a 180° hook at one end, called a crochet hook. The crafter employs different stitch techniques with the yarn and hook to create a variety of finished projects, from blankets to clothing to plush toys. In many studies that have been conducted, multiple fiber arts have been studied together (e.g., knitting, crocheting, embroidery) and there is relatively little work isolating individual fiber arts. It is expected that there are several knowledge gaps as a result of limited HFE work on fiber arts and crochet specifically. These gap areas include demographics, biomechanics, physical skill development, limiting factors within the learning process, and factors influencing continued engagement. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of existing literature on the physical, cognitive, and social effects of crochet on both experienced and novice crafters.

There currently are no shoe-scanning devices developed in the United States that can operate in a real-world, variable-weather environment in real-time. Forensics-focused groups, including the NIJ, expressed the need for such a system. To accomplish this, there was first a need to collect a large amount of sample data to train a first-of-its-kind machine-learning model. The work aimed to develop a system to collect shoe scans of a populace in real-time as they walk without committing privacy violations. This system would be able to identify specific traits found on the soles of the shoes, enabling insight into the origins of the shoes, where and how they are worn, as well as the people who wear them. The primary question of this research is if we could develop a prototype of such a system and what challenges would have to be overcome to make this possible.

Semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, reduces the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in people with overweight or obesity, but the effects of this drug on outcomes in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and heart failure are unknown. We report a prespecified analysis of the effect of once-weekly subcutaneous semaglutide 2·4 mg on ischaemic and heart failure cardiovascular outcomes. We aimed to investigate if semaglutide was beneficial in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease with a history of heart failure compared with placebo; if there was a difference in outcome in patients designated as having heart failure with preserved ejection fraction compared with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction; and if the efficacy and safety of semaglutide in patients with heart failure was related to baseline characteristics or subtype of heart failure.
