The reliance of spot-welding bonding for aluminium automobile structures is risky as fatigue performance is low. Alcan Automotive Structures has developed a process for the design of adhesively bonded and spot-welded aluminium joints. The adhesive used is a single-part, heat-curing epoxy, which is tough and durable. Adhesively bonded joints are dominated by geometric and manufacturing factors, such as variability and complex loading. The size of the adhesive fillet is an important consideration in a joint design programme.
