Implantable defibrillators require compact, high-voltage capacitors. One category of capacitors suitable for the application is electrolytic-electrochemical hybrid capacitors. This study investigated replacing the liquid electrolyte of these capacitors with a solid-ionomer polymer such as perfluorsulfonic acid polymers or sulfonated-poly(dimethylphenylene oxide). Such a change eliminates the use of corrosive liquids and allows for several cells in series to be packaged together. A single cell operating at 200 V with an energy density of 6.0 J/cc was produced. A three-cell capacitor stack capable of operating at 700 V was produced. Capacitors were evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectrography and charge/discharge cycling. Data showed that there is no major performance penalty associated with the use of solid electrolytes.
