בבעו is a Aramaic term that is found in the Targumim. Specifically in the Targum Neofiti it is always in a direct speech. The article tries to explain its use in this Targum, studying the different occurrences trough a text-linguistic approach. This methodology allows to define this term in a new way, analyzing בבעו as Macrosyntactic Sign. It introduces not just a plea or a prayer but also a statement in a polite way. In fact, the speaker uses בבעו to address his words to someone more authoritative.

Carlo Revelli worked for 41 years in Turin's Civic libraries, climbing all the steps of the hierarchical ladder: from book distributor in 1944 to expert cataloguer, until he became the director from 1972 to 1985. This professional experience was the reason for his constant reference to the users, with their varied needs for information, documentation and cultural enrichment. This attention was also reflected in his researcher's activity: Revelli was author of key texts in the field of cataloguing, appreciated trainer and active member of the Italian libraries association (AIB). Identification of artworks is mainly based on a few characteristics which can be observed using non-invasive tools (sight, touch, simple instruments), the investigated properties being geometry, weight, colours, texture, etc. Nowadays, technology allows reproducing all these characteristics to such an extent that even expert conservators can be deceived: in particular at the present time even the geometry of an artwork can be easily reproduced with the help of laser scanner analysis and with a rapid prototyping machine or a computer numerical control (CNC) milling machine. We propose a new tool, the Sonic Imprint, producing a code capable of identifying a rigid artefact from its vibrational resonance frequencies beyond doubt. In fact the vibration modes of an artefact strongly depend on the spatial distributions of its density and elastic parameters, as well as on its internal defects, definable in terms of abrupt changes of elastic properties in a small portion of the object. Then even small differences of these properties (differences usually present even among “identical” objects produced with industrial methods, at least in terms of defects) give appreciable variations of the Sonic Imprint codes, allowing secure identification of artworks, prevention of clonation and even damage monitoring. Moreover the procedure is really robust, rapid, inexpensive and not invasive. We tested it on a large number of commercial objects with the same shape and dimension and on many artworks in archaeological museums: an example is described. The application of this methodology to small-size artefacts (from small stones, vessels, pottery to medium-large coins) involves some problems in the detection of the Sonic Imprint. The problems, just due to the smaller sizes of this kind of objects, arise from the presence of higher resonance frequencies and larger damping of the induced vibrations. This implies that probes and instrumentation should be replaced to be adapted to the new experimental conditions.

AbstractThe definition of the active fault geometry and kinematics in young evolving orogens may be difficult owing to changes in the structural architecture which may occur with a frequence of few hundred thousand years. Cases from the central Apennines well illustrate this problem. The Avezzano-Bussi and Vallelonga-Salto Valley fault systems (65 and 85 km long, respectively) show clear evidence of Pliocene-early Pleistocene activity and have been responsible for the formation of intermontane basins. Available geological data, however, indicate that only minor segments (the Tre Monti and Trasacco faults, both 7 km long) of the mentioned faults have to be considered active during the late Pleistocene-Holocene, as faults accommodating minor deformations inside an intermontane basin. The L'Aquila fault system underwent significant geometrical and kinematic modifications during the Quaternary, with the reactivation of minor portions of parallel normal faults to draw a new system of en-echelon normal-oblique left-lateral faults. The Laga Mts. fault experienced an along-fault activity migration. The portion of the fault which was active earlier during the Quaternary shows a significant decrease or end of the activity while a portion previously not active displays impressive evidence of late Pleistocene-Holocene displacements. Structural changes in the intermontane basins bounded by the Colfiorito fault system also indicate that the intensity of the tectonic activity decreased during the Quaternary. Not defining the structural evolution in the above mentioned cases would imply wrong conclusions for both the fault geometry and kinematics which may be delivered for seismotectonics and seismic hazard assessment. This typically leads to overestimate the fault length and the expected magnitude or to the increase in the number of seismogenic sources affecting an area. Finally, the definition of the structural evolution permits to select between different geometrical options in terms of active faulting framework (e.g. a system of parallel normal faults vs. a system of en-echelon normal oblique faults as in the case of the L'Aquila fault system) related to different geometries at depth (detachment normal fault vs. high-angle oblique fault). © 2001 Éditions scientifiques et médicales Elsevier SAS
