Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are powerful technologies with proven utility and tremendous potential. Spine surgery, in particular, may benefit from these developing technologies for resident training, preoperative education for patients, surgical planning and execution, and patient rehabilitation. In this review, the history, current applications, challenges, and future of AR/VR in spine surgery are examined.

Iridoids are secondary metabolites with several biological activities. They are often found in species of the genus TabebuiaGomes ex A.P. de Candolle. Tabebuia aurea(Silva Manso) Benth. & Hook. F. ex S. Moore, Bignoniaceae, is used to treat snake bites in traditional medicine. This study aimed to isolate the specioside - an the iridoid glycoside - from T. aurea, as well as investigate its potential biological properties, including anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antibiofilm, cytotoxic, anti-Trichomonas vaginalisand antitrypanosomal activities. Specioside inhibited leucocyte recruitment into the peritoneal cavity in mice injected with carrageenan, data that demonstrated its anti-inflammatory potential. However, the additional evaluated biological properties were negligible.

Despite a very active research in the field of nanomedicine, only a few nano-based drug delivery systems have reached the market. The “death valley” between research and commercialization has been partially attributed to the limited characterization and reproducibility of the nanoformulations. Our group has previously reported the potential of a peptide-based nanovaccine candidate for the prevention of SIV infection in macaques. This vaccine candidate is composed of chitosan/dextran sulfate nanoparticles containing twelve SIV peptide antigens. The aim of this work was to rigorously characterize one of these nanoformulations containing a specific peptide, following a quality-by-design approach. The evaluation of the different quality attributes was performed by several complementary techniques, such as dynamic light scattering, nanoparticle tracking analysis, and electron microscopy for particle size characterization. The inter-batch reproducibility was validated by three independent laboratories. Finally, the long-term stability and scalability of the manufacturing technique were assessed. Overall, these data, together with the in vivo efficacy results obtained in macaques, underline the promise this new vaccine holds with regard to its translation to clinical trials.

Based on significant evidence, asphaltenes are found in crude oil and can form stably dispersed nanoaggregates in solution, which can be directly adsorbed onto surfaces by different interactions. These nanoaggregates contain mainly vanadium and nickel compounds, which are effectively adsorbed or occluded in their structure in the form of metal porphyrins. In this study, SiO2nanoparticles produced from rice husks (RH-SiO2NPs) were used as adsorbents for asphaltene. Adsorption experiments with asphaltene solutions from Cerro Negro crude oil were conducted, and the vanadium concentrations in the solution and in the material adsorbed were determined. Based on high-resolution analysis techniques, such as gel permeation chromatography with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (GPC-ICPMS) and single-particle inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (spICP MS), vanadyl compounds associated with asphaltene aggregates were found to be mostly adsorbed on the nanoparticles, with preference in the pores. The analysis of the remnant solution after adsorption using a gel permeation chromatography system with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry showed profiles corresponding to different molar mass ranges, with a decrease in the zone corresponding to larger-molecular-weight aggregates rich in vanadium compounds. The analysis of the solid material before and after adsorption was performed using spICP MS. The results showed that the size and composition of the RH-SiO2NPs could be accurately determined using this technique; after adsorption, the signals corresponding to vanadium were detected in the nanoparticles with dimensions smaller than the actual nanoparticles. A comparison of the size distributions of nanoparticles and the vanadium signal from the material adsorbed onto nanoparticles indicated that vanadium compounds associated with aggregates were adsorbed and migrated to the pores of the nanoparticles. When simultaneous aggregation is present, the adsorption processes are complex, and the possibility of multilayer adsorption or aggregate adsorption mechanisms is difficult to discern. Using very high-resolution analysis techniques, such as GPC-ICPMS and spICP MS, we acquired reliable evidence that the vanadyl compounds associated with asphaltene aggregates were mostly adsorbed and certified that vanadium in high proportion was strongly adsorbed on the nanoparticles. These results have an important impact on the determination of asphaltene aggregate adsorption mechanisms and facilitate practical applications using nanoparticles to concentrate and separate vanadium compounds from crude oil.

RESUMENLa interceptación de la precipitación por la cubierta vegetal es uno de los principales componentes del balance hídrico en los sistemas forestales. Este trabajo describe el diseño de instalaciones de medición y registro de redistribución de precipitación y presenta información de siete parcelas experimentales ubicadas en plantaciones de Eucalyptusde Uruguay. Los resultados muestran que la fracción de precipitación que es interceptada por el dosel forestal de primera rotación o de replantación varía entre 14 y 30% de la precipitación total, mientras que en la plantación sin manejo de rebrote se alcanza el valor máximo de 50%. La precipitación neta que alcanza al suelo se compone principalmente de precipitación directa y en menor medida de escurrimiento fustal (42–80% y 2–8% respectivamente). Mediante regresión lineal múltiple y prueba de análisis de varianza (ANOVA) se identificó dependencia significativa (p-valor < 0.01) de la interceptación con la especie, edad y densidad de plantación. La información local obtenida es fundamental para la cuantificación del proceso de redistribución de la lluvia en plantaciones forestales de rápido crecimiento, bajo clima templado húmedo y su análisis resulta relevante para la modelación numérica de este proceso.

Although cardiac sympathetic denervation (CSD) effectively manages refractory ventricular tachyarrhythmias (RVTs) in long-QT syndrome and catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia, the link between dysautonomia and RVT from broader etiologies is understudied. We hypothesized that dysautonomia is linked to RVT regardless of etiology in patients requiring CSD. We aimed to determine whether these patients have a high burden of dysautonomia symptoms using the Composite Autonomic Symptom Score-31 (COMPASS-31).

Interesterified fat (IF) has been established as a substitute for trans-fat in ultra-processed foods. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that IF increases intestinal barrier permeability and bacterial translocation, but it is still unknown its impacts on the intestinal microbiota. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate if IF modulates the intestinal microbiota and the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) by the intestinal bacteria of male Swiss mice fed control or high-fat diet, with or without IF. Animals were divided into groups that received anormolipidic control diet (10% of calories from lipids) or high-fat diet (45% of calories from lipids) containing unmodified fat or IF, both obtained from palm oil: CT (Control diet); ICT (Interesterified Control diet); HF (High-fat diet); IHF (Interesterified High-fat diet) for eight weeks. Fecal samples were collected directly from the animals' colons for processing. The SCFA production was analyzed by gas chromatography. For microbiota diversity, bioinformatics analysis was carried out. Significant differences in microbiota composition at the phylum level were not observed between diet groups. However, a reduction in abundance of the Lactobacillusand Enterococcusgenera, and an increase in the Peptococcusgenus were found in high-fat diet groups. Interestingly, in the normolipid diet group with IF (ICT group), the animals showed microbiota composition similar to those found in animals that consumed high-fat diets. These alterations negatively interfered with the production of acetate and butyrate and may influence intestinal homeostasis and compromise metabolism. This study opens important discussions about the physiological impact of IF in health.

For future learning systems, incremental learning is desirable because it allows for: efficient resource usage by eliminating the need to retrain from scratch at the arrival of new data; reduced memory usage by preventing or limiting the amount of data required to be stored – also important when privacy limitations are imposed; and learning that more closely resembles human learning. The main challenge for incremental learning is catastrophic forgetting, which refers to the precipitous drop in performance on previously learned tasks after learning a new one. Incremental learning of deep neural networks has seen explosive growth in recent years. Initial work focused on task-incremental learning, where a task-ID is provided at inference time. Recently, we have seen a shift towards class-incremental learning where the learner must discriminate at inference time between all classes seen in previous tasks without recourse to a task-ID. In this paper, we provide a complete survey of existing class-incremental learning methods for image classification, and in particular, we perform an extensive experimental evaluation on thirteen class-incremental methods. We consider several new experimental scenarios, including a comparison of class-incremental methods on multiple large-scale image classification datasets, an investigation into small and large domain shifts, and a comparison of various network architectures.

BackgroundThe etiopathogenesis of vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is incompletely understood. Bioactive lipids play a key role in allergic disorders. This study focused on the sphingolipid metabolism on the ocular surface of VKC and to explore if it has a contributory role in the refractoriness of the disease.MethodsActive VKC cases, (n=87) (classified as mild/moderate and severe/very severe based on the disease symptoms) and age-matched healthy controls (n=60) were recruited as part of a 2-year prospective study at a tertiary eye care centre in South India. Conjunctival imprint cytology was used to assess gene expression of enzymes of sphingolipids metabolism. Sphingolipids were estimated in the tears by LC-MS/MS analysis. In vitro study was done to assess IgE-induced alterations in sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) receptor expression and histone modification in cultured mast cells.ResultsSignificantly altered gene expression of the sphingolipids enzymes and S1P receptor (SIP3R) were observed in conjunctival imprint cells of VKC cases. Pooled tears analysis revealed significantly lowered levels of S1P(d17:0), S1P(d20:1) (p<0.001) and S1P(d17:1) (p<0.01) specifically in severe/very severe VKC compared with both mild/moderate VKC and control. Cer(d18:/17:0) (p<0.001), ceramide-1-phosphate (C1P)(d18:1/8:0) (p<0.01) and C1P(d18:1/2.0 (p<0.05) were lowered in severe/very severe VKC compared with mild/moderate VKC. Cultured mast cells treated with IgE revealed significantly increased gene expression of S1P1 and 3 receptors and the protein expression of histone deacetylases (1, 6).ConclusionAltered sphingolipid metabolism in the ocular surface results in low tear ceramide and sphingosine levels in severe/very severe VKC compared with the mild/moderate cases. The novel finding opens up fresh targets for intervention in these refractory cases.

Epstein-Barr virus–positive mucocutaneous ulcer is a recent and unusual type of lymphoproliferation, mostly associated with various forms of immunosuppression. In most cases, they regress spontaneously, but an increasing number of reports describe a spectral behavior of the lesion, which ranges from a simple ulcer with eosinophilia to aggressive ulcers. In these cases, Epstein-Barr virus–related lymphomas are the main differential diagnosis. We report a unique observation of this rare disease with mandibular involvement. Due to bone erosion, the patient was treated with 6 cycles of R-CHOP (rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone) with complete healing of the ulcer on clinical examination and PET-scan control.

Oral pigmentations are a heterogeneous group and can be the result of physiological activity of oral mucosal melanocytes, secondary to exogenous causes, associated with systemic or local diseases, or due to proliferative activity of melanocytes. Their diagnosis is critical because these lesions can be markers of internal diseases or, in the case of melanocytic proliferative processes, they may represent a malignant neoplasm. In the past decade, the use of reflectance confocal microscopy, a noninvasive imaging tool, has aided the analysis of such lesions, but the establishment of firm criteria in their evaluation is still lacking. This study evaluated a series of 19 cases of pigmented oral lesions and correlated the reflectance confocal microscopy findings with histopathological classical criteria. We found 13 cases of melanotic macule, 1 of them associated with Peutz–Jeghers syndrome and 2 with Laugier–Hunzinker syndrome; 1 melanocytic nevus; 2 lentigo maligna; 2 pigmented actinic cheilitis; and 1 case of postinflammatory pigmentation secondary to a lupus erythematosus oral discoid lesion. The main difference between benign and malignant lesions was the presence of atypical proliferation in lentigo maligna. Langerhans cells with thick dendritic processes, which may be present in other benign and inflammatory pigmentations is one of the main reasons for diagnostic pitfalls.

Introduction:Discoid lupus erythematosus can affect periungual tissues leading to onychodystrophy. Squamous cell carcinoma can occur in persistent scars of discoid lupus; this rare occurrence has not yet been reported on the nail unit. Case presentation: we report a case of squamous cell carcinoma occurring on the distal phalanx of the thumb in a patient with longstanding periungual discoid lupus on several fingernails. Discussion:Periungual discoid lupus erythematosus is rare. The scars caused by this disease can very rarely develop into squamous cell carcinoma. This is the first report of this occurrence at the periungual tissues.

A growing body of research has shown that static stance control (e.g., body sway) is influenced by cognitive demands (CD), an effect that may be related to competition for limited central resources. Measures of stance control have also been impacted by postural demands (PD) (e.g., stable vs. unstable stances). However, less is known of any possible interactions between PD and CD on static stance control in populations with intact balance control and ample cognitive resources, like young healthy adults. In this study, among the same participants, we factorially compared the impact of PD with and without CD on static stance control. Thirty-four healthy young adults wore inertial measurement units (IMU) while completing static stance tasks for 30 seconds in three different PD positions: feet apart, feet together, and tandem feet. After completing these tasks alone, participants performed these tasks with CD by concurrently completing verbal serial seven subtractions from a randomly selected three-digit number. For two dependent measures, path length and jerk, there were main effects of CD and PD but no interaction effect between these factors. For all other stance control parameters, there was only a PD main effect. Thus, adding a cognitive demand to postural demands, while standing upright, may have an independent impact on stance control, but CD does not seem to interact with PD. These results suggest that young healthy adults may be less sensitive to simple PD and CD due to their greater inherent balance control and available cognitive resources. Future work might explore more complex PD and CD combinations to determine the boundaries under which young adults’ resources are taxed.

Background:The lesions of porokeratosis (PK) lead to skin atrophy and scarring as long as they spread centrifugally. PK affecting the nail unit is seldom described. Objective:The aim was to revise the previously reported cases of ungual PK and to present 3 new cases. Methods:A PubMed search was performed with the keywords “nail” and “porokeratosis.” Previously reported cases as well as 3 new cases are depicted in tables. Results:Only 11 cases of ungual PK were found; 3 new cases have been added. All patients presented with typical lesions of PK (Mibelli, isolated, segmental, or ostial eccrine types) that happened to affect nails due to nail matrix or nail bed compromise, resulting in mild to severe nail scarring, including irreversible anonychia. The present 3 case series contrast with the previous single case reports. Conclusions:PK affecting the nails is exceedingly rare. Changes in nails affected by PK are irreversible, since, as on the skin, this is a chronic scarring process.

Noninvasive respiratory support (NRS) is standard in pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) for respiratory diseases, but its failure can lead to complications requiring invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). This study aimed to identify risk factors for NRS failure in children with acute respiratory failure (ARF) in PICUs, and compare complications and outcomes between IMV-only and NRS failure patients.

Background:Lichen planus (LP) can lead to severe scarring of the nail unit leading to anonychia. There are very few reports of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) occurring in the lesions of ungual LP. Objective:The aim of this study was to revise the previously reported cases of SCC appearing in ungual LP and to present a new case. Methods:A PubMed search was performed with the terms “nail lichen planus” and “squamous cell carcinoma.” Reported cases as well as a new case were depicted in a table. Results:Only 2 indexed articles reporting 3 cases were found. All patients suffered of long-lasting scarring ungual LP. Conclusions:The occurrence of SCC in nail LP is rare. LP is not “premalignant” per se, but SCC might rarely arise in LP scars.

The use of dynamically bonded molecules designed to reversibly link solvent-dispersed nanocrystals (NCs) is a promising strategy to form colloidal assemblies with controlled structures and macroscopic properties. In this work, tin-doped indium oxide NCs are functionalized with ligands that form reversible covalent bonds with linking molecules to drive assembly of NC gels. We monitor the gelation by using small angle X-ray scattering and characterize how changes in the gel structure affect the infrared optical properties arising from the localized surface plasmon resonance of the NCs. The assembly is reversible because of the designed linking chemistry, and we disassemble the gels using two strategies: addition of excess NCs to change the ratio of linking molecules to NCs and addition of a capping molecule that displaces the linking molecules. The assembly behavior is rationalized using a thermodynamic perturbation theory to compute the phase diagram of the NC–linking molecule mixture. Coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations reveal the competition between the loop and bridge linking motifs essential for understanding NC gelation. This combined experimental, computational, and theoretical work provides a platform for controlling and designing the properties of reversible colloidal assemblies that incorporate NC and solvent compositions beyond those compatible with other contemporary (e.g., DNA-based) linking strategies.

Mutant huntingtin (mHTT) protein carrying the elongated N-terminal polyglutamine (polyQ) tract misfolds and forms protein aggregates characteristic of Huntington’s disease (HD) pathology. A high-affinity ligand specific for mHTT aggregates could serve as a positron emission tomography (PET) imaging biomarker for HD therapeutic development and disease progression. To identify such compounds with binding affinity for polyQ aggregates, we embarked on systematic structural activity studies; lead optimization of aggregate-binding affinity, unbound fractions in brain, permeability, and low efflux culminated in the discovery of compound 1, which exhibited target engagement in autoradiography (ARG) studies in brain slices from HD mouse models and postmortem human HD samples. PET imaging studies with 11C-labeled 1in both HD mice and WT nonhuman primates (NHPs) demonstrated that the right-hand-side labeled ligand [11C]-1R(CHDI-180R) is a suitable PET tracer for imaging of mHTT aggregates. [11C]-1Ris now being advanced to human trials as a first-in-class HD PET radiotracer.

Immunotherapy (IO) has altered the therapeutic landscape for multiple cancers. There are emerging data from retrospective studies on a subset of patients who do not benefit from IO, instead experiencing rapid progression with dramatic acceleration of disease trajectory, termed ‘hyperprogressive disease’ (HPD). The incidence of HPD ranges from 4% to 29% from the studies reported. Biological basis and mechanisms of HPD are currently being elucidated, with one theory involving the Fc region of antibodies. Another group has shown EGFRand MDM2/MDM4amplifications in patients with HPD. This phenomenon has polarized oncologists who debate that this could still reflect the natural history of the disease. Thus, prospective studies are urgently needed to confirm the underlying biology, predict patients who are susceptible to HPD, and determine the modality of therapy post progression.

Background: Antimicrobial potential of silver nanoparticles synthesised by using various biological sources was already been reported by many researchers. The green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using microbial sources has been proved to be more effective. Methods: In this study, anti-dermatophytic silver nanoparticles were synthesised by using pyrrolo metabolites producing actinomycetes as a green catalyst. Different characterization methods such as UV-Visible, XRD, and AFM were used to identify the physiochemical characteristics of synthesised nanoparticles. Results: The synthesised nanoparticles showed λ-max at 427 nm and 402 nm, respectively. The XRD analysis based on the JCPDS database identified the two synthesized nanoparticles as silver oxide nanoparticles (AgO NPs) and silver peroxide nanoparticles (Ag2O3 NPs). The size of these nanoparticles was found to be in the range of 40-44 nm (AgO NPs) and 23-25 nm (Ag2O3 NPs), respectively. The synthesized nanoparticles demonstrated significant anti-fungal activity against dermatophytic fungi Trichophyton mentagrophyes with the zone of inhibition of 38 mm by AgO NP and 17 mm by Ag2O3 NPs. Conclusion: Screening of marine actinomycetes LG003 and LG005 revealed the presence of pyrrolo derivatives as the major metabolites, suggesting that these pyrrolo derivatives could be responsible for synthesis and stabilization of AgO and Ag2O3NPs. Among the synthesized NPs, the AgO NPs showed great potential as an anti-dermatophytic agent. This study provides further research opportunities for AgONPs as anti-fungal agents.

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem disease of unknown cause that is characterized by the presence of granulomas in various organs. Cutaneous involvement is common and the reported incidence has varied from 9% to 37%. Studies on cutaneous sarcoidosis in Brazil are lacking.

In the Parma Functional Urban Area, hydro-geo-ecology was investigated through an interdisciplinary approach, with emphasis on the shallow aquifer system. The study pointed out that domestic wells and fontaniliare both fed by shallow groundwater affected by PCE and nitrate contamination, upgradient of the rural area located north of Parma City. Moreover, Folsomia candidatests suggested the possibility that other types of contaminants (not analysed in this study) can affect the shallow groundwater. Nowadays, PCE concentrations in the city centre are slightly higher than the limit set by law. Moreover, PCE aerobic biodegradation can be due to the local microbial community and then an effective natural attenuation can be expected along the groundwater flow pathway. These results suggest a very low risk for human health, linked to the groundwater consumption in the rural area north of Parma City. Conversely, no forecasts can be made at present about the possible impact of low PCE concentrations on the aquatic ecosystem observed at the fontanili. Concerning nitrate contamination, the higher concentrations detected in some wells and fontanilisuggest a high risk for both human health and aquatic ecosystems. In a wider context, thanks to the interdisciplinary approach that combines successfully well-established investigation methods, the present study allows a better knowledge of the hydro-geo-ecological behaviour of groundwater-dependent ecosystems. At the same time, through purpose-designed experimental investigations and simulation models, this approach could be used as a sort of guideline useful in studying such complex environmental systems.

Background:Nail apparatus melanoma (NAM) is rare. The higher mortality reported in the literature is most likely due to advanced disease associated with delayed diagnosis and treatment. Objective:All patients diagnosed with NAM were followed at a single reference center during a period of 10 years, with emphasis on dermatological and histological findings. Clinical outcomes were included. Methods:A retrospective review of medical records, photographs, and histopathological examination. Results:73.7% of the patients were female and their mean age was 47 years. Caucasian and African-American patients had a similar incidence (47.4%). There was only 1 Asian patient in this study (5.3%). All patients presented with nail plate pigmentation. The mean prediagnosis duration was 33 months. A total of 63.2% patients had in situ melanoma and an average Breslow index of 2.18 mm in invasive cases. Fifteen patients underwent conservative surgery and 3 underwent phalanx amputation. All patients survived, and 4 have had more than a 5-year follow-up. Conclusion:In situ lesions showed longitudinal bands or total melanonychia with no nail dystrophy. Invasive cases presented with dystrophic lesions (longitudinal splitting of the nail). Conservative surgery provides a good option without worsening the prognosis. All dermatologists should be aware of early signs of NAM, since prognosis depends on early treatment.

Soil contamination, due to the leakage of petroleum or its by-products, is a reason for concern nowadays. Technologies, such as bioremediation, have been developed to remove these pollutants from the environment. This paper aims to evaluate the bioremediation of clayey acid soils contaminated with diesel oil, comparing the effect of aeration use and the addition of different sawdust ratios (5% and 10%) as bulking material. This research was developed in three phases, with experiments of (a) natural attenuation (exclusively natural processes), (b) sawdust-amended soil and (c) aeration combined with sawdust addition. The manometric respirometry test was applied to monitor CO2production during biodegradation experiments and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) was used as an absorbent solution. The contamination of the samples was carried out by the addition of diesel oil (5% w/w (gg−1)) into the soil. The results indicated that natural attenuation presented a slower bioremediation process when compared to the treatments with sawdust addition. The addition of 5% of sawdust was beneficial to the microbial activity of the soil, but a proportion above 5% caused a negative effect on the samples, reducing the microbial activity. Statistical analysis (Kruskal-Wallistest) showed significant oil removals on experiments with the combination of sawdust and aeration. The aeration was considered the main agent in increasing oil biodegradation in the soil. The degradation rate reactions followed a zero-order linear model. The highest contaminant degradation rate was observed in the samples with 5% of sawdust and aeration (24.79 mgO2kg−1dry soil day−1), which also improved microbial activity and diesel oil removal.

Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is a rare form of breast cancer that accounts for only 2% to 4% of all breast cancer cases. Despite its low incidence, IBC contributes to 7% to 10% of breast cancer caused mortality. Despite ongoing international efforts to formulate better diagnosis, treatment, and research, the survival of patients with IBC has not been significantly improved, and there are no therapeutic agents that specifically target IBC to date. The authors present a comprehensive overview that aims to assess the present and new management strategies of IBC.

CHILD syndrome (Congenital Hemidysplasia, Ichthyosiform erythroderma, Limb Defects) is a rare X-linked dominant disease. The authors report a 2-month-old patient presenting with typical features of CHILD syndrome that was treated with a topical solution containing cholesterol and lovastatin, with complete clearance of her CHILD nevus. The changes in skin lipid metabolism that explain the CHILD ichthyosiform nevus and their correction through topical application of cholesterol and lovastatin are discussed.

An interview with Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School's theater director Melody Herzfeld is presented. Topics she discussed include how she managed her students to stay on the room during the February 14, 2018 shooting of Nikolas Cruz at the Parkland, Florida school, how she inform the parents of the shooting, and the documentary film "Song of Parkland," directed by Amy Schatz which documents her story during the shooting.

In this review, we reported on the Proline-chimeras characterized by resembling the skeleton of Alanine (Alanine-Proline chimeras). The synthetic approaches were classified according to the position of the methyl group on the pyrrolidine ring. Moreover, the synthesis of pyroglutamic acid derivatives will be discussed due to its importance as building block and chiral pool in the asymmetric synthesis of numerous bioactive compounds. The present review will be focused on the chemical syntheses of mono-methyl substituted proline derivatives, including the contribution to the literature from 2004 to 2016.
