Consumer sentiment is an important determinant of consumer durables. A study on the relationship between retail durable goods sales and the level of consumer sentiment as measured by the Index of Consumer Expectations is presented. The study seeks to determine the predictive power of various models and the potency of consumer sentiment in predicting the irregular pattern of consumer durable spending.

The article discusses the Great Britain Court of Appeal's decision in the case Sinclair v. Versailles, regarding the authorization of the profits derived from assets belonging to the fiduciary's principal and obtained by a fiduciary. It also informs that the decision and reasoning the case raise important issues on the availability of proprietary relief for breach of fiduciary duty.

This paper is a contribution to the emerging focus on premodern concerns in organisational studies. It provides an historical account of early medieval Irish monastic communities highlighting the unusual fusion of structure, community and spirituality as a way of explaining the considerable success and longevity of this unusual organisation form. Key insights arising from this study are then applied to contemporary debates on post-modern organisational forms.

The asymmetric synthesis of enantiomerically pure α‐substituted tertiary homoallylic ethers 4 a, 11and 12 a–cby the allylation of ethyl methyl ketone (1 a) with γ‐substituted allylsilanes 9 a–his described. The allylsilanes were obtained by a nickel‐catalysed Grignard cross‐coupling reaction of (E)‐ and (Z)‐(3‐iodoallyl)trimethylsilane with various Grignard reagents. The reaction of the allylsilanes with 1 ain the presence of the trimethylsilyl ether of N‐trifluoroacetylnorpseudoephedrine (3), and catalytic amounts of a mixture of trimethylsilyl triflate and trifluoromethanesulfonic acid led to the homoallylic ethers 4 a, 11and 12 a–cwith two new stereogenic centres, with a selectivity of 1:9 to >20:1 for the homoallylic and of 1:99 to >60:1 for the allylic centre. The facial selectivity does not depend on the configuration of the allylsilane, and in all reactions the antiproduct is preferentially formed. Interestingly, a pronounced switch of facial selectivity takes place with increasing length of the alkyl group of the allylsilane.

There is good evidence that computer-aided learning is well accepted by students with autism and is of great potential benefit to them. Despite the potential, however, the field remains relatively unexplored. This paper therefore proposes a framework for further research and development in the field of computer-aided learning for students with autism. The framework is based around the core deficiencies of autism, namely a social impairment, a communication impairment, rigidity and inflexibility in thinking and a theory of mind deficit. Proposals for computer-aided learning systems for each of these areas are put forward, and our current development work outlined.

Since 1980 the percentage of the workforce engaged in part-time employment has increased, attributed to increase in service and retail industries and changing attitudes and lifestyles of workers. The purpose of the present study was to determine characteristics associated with choosing part-time employment in retail sales occupations.The data set was the 1985 Current Population Survey, refined to limit the sample to 849 persons currently employed in retail sales occupations (U.S. Department of Commerce, 1985), 82% who worked in soft goods and 18% in hard goods.Logit regressions tested models of characteristics such as gender, race, presence of children, and potential wage rates as to significance in increasing the probability of choosing part-time employment. Gender was an important predictor of work choice, with women more likely to work part-time than men. Women were more likely to work part-time if they were white, married, had children and lived further from the central city.

Aminolysis in chloroform of sulfamate esters RNHSO2OC6H4NO2-4 principally with a series of imidazoles gives good kobs first-order rate constants under pseudo-first-order conditions. Plots of kobsvs. [amine] display downward curvature leading to saturation and these plots can be fitted to the rate law kobs 4;= 4;Kmk1[amine]/{1 4;+ 4;Km[amine]} where Km and k1 are defined by eqn. (i). The Hammett ρ value for the formation of the complex [S·Amine] is +1.64. Using data derived for the rate-determining step, the breakup of the intermediate is shown to be unimolecular with a ρacyl (substituents in the R part of S) of –1.78 consistent with an E1cB process. Steric effects of the bound-amine in the complex are negligible.

This article explores the role that technology plays in creating and fostering transparency in global supply chains. Transparency is deemed vital in the creation of sustainable and resilient supply chains and overall effective corporate governance. There are two distinct orientations toward the use of technology by multinational corporations (MNCs) in creating sustainability transparency within their global supply chains: control and relational. A control orientation views technology as a tool to gather the ever-increasing levels of sustainability data on supplier practices in an efficient, secure, and progressively automated manner. A relational orientation adopts a view where technology is a tool to help build social relations and improve dialogue and collaboration on sustainability throughout the supply chain. A key difference in the two orientations lies in the mindset of the MNC manager toward the development of supply chain sustainability transparency. The article illustrates the effective application of both approaches and offers advice to managers on the design choices they need to consider in choosing technologies.
