ABSTRACTVictimization of teachers is an area of growing concern for administrators and policymakers. Recent research has increased the understanding of the prevalence and negative consequences of teacher victimization; however, one gap in the literature involves understanding the quality of treatment when victimizations are reported to school administrators. The present research attempts to fill the gap by applying procedural justice theory to understand how elements of school responses to victimization events affect teachers’ satisfaction with the process. Data from teachers among 50 largest school districts across the nation were used to identify 636 theft, sexual harassment, and physical assault incidents reported to school administration. Teachers’ satisfaction with the school response was modeled using measures derived from distributive and procedural justice theoretical frameworks applied to administrator actions. Results indicate that procedural justice is an important dimension of school response and influential on teachers’ reported satisfaction with how victimization events were handled.

Sweet corn (Zea maysL.) cultivars must meet stringent quality standards to be accepted in the marketplace. Breeding for eating‐quality traits, such as sweetness, typically involves taste ratings or quantification of carbohydrate content. Total soluble solids (TSS) content is used as a proxy for sweetness in many fruit crops. Using a diallel of near‐isogenic corn lines for sugary1, shrunken2, waxy1, and wild‐type (WT) endosperm types, a combining ability analysis for carbohydrate traits and TSS content determined the relationship of these traits over three harvest dates. Variation existed for total sugar, sucrose, glucose, fructose, total polysaccharides, and starch content within and across endosperm types and harvest dates, but strong correlations with TSS content were present only when assessed across all endosperm types. Strong similarities existed among WT, waxy1, and sugary1near‐isogenic lines for general combining ability for carbohydrate traits, while shrunken2near‐isogenic lines had different desirable combiners. Line C40 was a desirable general combiner for carbohydrate traits among WT, waxy1, and sugary1endosperm types, while Ia5125, P39, and Ia453 were desirable general combiners for shrunken2endosperm. This experiment also determined that TSS content is not a useful trait in sweet corn breeding for quality traits. Variation existed for carbohydrate traits among hybrids within and across endosperm types and harvest dates.Variation existed for total soluble solids (TSS) content across endosperm types and for hybrids within an endosperm type.TSS differed between 19 and 22 or 25 days after pollination for su1, sh2, and wx1endosperm.TSS content correlates with soluble carbohydrates only when assessed across all endosperm types.Wild‐type, wx1, and su1near‐isogenic lines exhibit strong similarities for carbohydrate trait general combining ability.

Abstract:What can a study of "data" contribute to our understanding of early twentieth-century literary culture and how can data aesthetics help to explicate the seemingly obtuse style of writer Ronald Firbank? This article addresses both of these questions by considering the forms and function of data in Firbank's writings. It argues that Firbank's characteristic camp and elusive style can be understood as an examination of the information economy in which he was living, an economy that traded in flattened forms and decontextualized data.

A solid-to-solid phase transition was discovered in n-heptane with an onset at a pressure of 1.7 ± 0.1 GPa, evidenced by a discontinuity in the pressure–volume equation of state obtained from synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments conducted at room temperature. The phase transition also resulted in discontinuous shifts of vibrational peaks in the infrared spectra. No additional phase transitions were detected up to 10 GPa, contradicting an earlier claim of a phase transition at 3 GPa. The hydrostatic limit of heptane in a diamond anvil cell was estimated to be 3.5 GPa. Above that pressure, the stress state is not well-defined, which may explain prior reports of a phase transition at 7.5 GPa.

Myeloid cell metabolic reprogramming is a hallmark of inflammatory disease; however, its role in inflammation-induced hypercoagulability is poorly understood.

The diffusion in ZSM-5 zeolite of methanol and of two series of promoters of the methanol to dimethyl ether reaction (linear methyl esters, benzaldehyde, 4-n-alkyl benzaldehydes) has been studied using classical molecular dynamics in the NVT ensemble. Whereas promoter diffusion coefficients decrease with increasing alkyl chain length in methyl esters, the aromatic aldehyde promoters all have similar diffusion coefficients. The lowest diffusion coefficient is that of benzaldehyde. All the promoters exhibit a preference for moving in the straight pore, a preference that is most pronounced for the 4-n-alkylbenzaldehydes and least for the longest aliphatic esters. A novel diffusion mechanism, a molecular ‘3-point turn’, is observed. This likely plays an important role in allowing the most potent promoters, with longer linear alkyl chains, to access all of the Brønsted acid reaction sites. The diffusion coefficient of methanol is larger than that of all the promoters. The more catalytically active aromatic aldehyde promoters limit methanol diffusion less than the aliphatic esters.

Aim: Drawing on the protection motivation theory (PMT), the current study examined the psychological and sociodemographic factors that influence COVID-19 vaccination intention after the roll-out of COVID-19 vaccines. Subject and methods: A cross-sectional survey (N= 1190) was conducted to capture quantitative responses on the components of threat and coping appraisals and qualitative responses to open-ended questions on barriers to COVID-19 vaccination. Results: Hierarchical analysis showed that only perceived vulnerability (β= .10, 95% CI= .05, .26) and efficacy response (β= .45, 95% CI= .56, .76) were significant predictors of vaccination intention. Multinomial logistic regression showed that older, men, White, with at least college education, with liberal political leaning, and pro-vaccine religious views had higher vaccination intention, whereas younger, women with less than college education, anti-vaccine religious views, and with conservative or neutral political leaning had higher odds of hesitancy and refusal. Content analysis showed that the barriers to vaccination included concerns about vaccine safety, distrust in pharmaceutical companies, availability of and accessibility to vaccines, inexistent personal health risk factors, preference for natural immunity, fear of the vaccination process, lack of information about the vaccine, and distrust in the media. Conclusion: This study provided useful insights about the sociopsychological and sociodemographic factors that influence vaccination intention after the roll out of COVID-19 vaccines. Thus, these factors can be taken into account when designing tailored health promotion interventions to address vaccine hesitancy.

Aims: To present current practice patterns in the diagnosis and management of Cytomegalovirus anterior uveitis (CMV AU) by uveitis experts worldwide. Methods: A two-round modified Delphi survey with masking of the study team was performed. Based on experience and expertise, 100 international uveitis specialists from 21 countries were invited to participate in the survey. Variation in the diagnostic approaches and preferred management of CMV AU was captured using an online survey platform. Results: Seventy-five experts completed both surveys. Fifty-five of the 75 experts (73.3%) would always perform diagnostic aqueous tap in suspected CMV AU cases. Consensus was achieved for starting topical antiviral treatment (85% of experts). About half of the experts (48%) would only commence systemic antiviral treatment for severe, prolonged, or atypical presentation. The preferred specific route was ganciclovir gel 0.15% for topical treatment (selected by 70% of experts) and oral valganciclovir for systemic treatment (78% of experts). The majority of experts (77%) would commence treatment with topical corticosteroid four times daily for one to two weeks along with antiviral coverage, with subsequent adjustment depending on the clinical response. Prednisolone acetate 1% was the drug of choice (opted by 70% of experts). Long-term maintenance treatment (up to 12 months) can be considered for chronic course of inflammation (88% of experts) and those with at least 2 episodes of CMV AU within a year (75–88% of experts). Conclusions: Preferred management practices for CMV AU vary widely. Further research is necessary to refine diagnosis and management and provide higher-level evidence.

Background/aimsAcute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy is a rare but important disease that can be associated with life-threatening complications due to cerebral vasculitis. The primary objective was to determine the incidence of neurological complications and risk factors for stroke and transient ischaemic attack (TIA) associated with acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy. Secondary objectives included the clinical presentation, visual outcomes and recurrence rates.MethodsThis was a multicentre retrospective case series including 111 eyes from 60 subjects presenting from January 2009 to June 2020.ResultsMedian age at presentation was 29 years (IQR 24.7–35.1) and 36 subjects (60.0%) were male. 20 subjects (33.3%) reported a viral prodrome. Stroke and TIA were observed in seven subjects (11.7%). Older age was the only significant risk factor for stroke/TIA (p=0.042). Vision loss occurred in seven eyes, with four eyes (3.6%) having final visual acuity 6/15–6/60 and three eyes (2.7%) having visual acuity of 6/60 or worse. Recurrence occurred in 10 subjects (16.7%).ConclusionsThe presence of headache cannot reliably predict those at risk of stroke/TIA. Individuals presenting with acute posterior multifocal pigment epitheliopathy should therefore undergo a clinical neurological review and work-up for cerebral vasculitis as deemed appropriate by the treating ophthalmologist and collaborating neurologist.

Purpose: The benefits of intraoperative dialysis during orthotopic liver transplantation remain controversial. In patients with anuric renal failure and portopulmonary hypertension, maintaining venous return during caval clamping and unclamping along with minimizing fluid overload is critical to avoiding right ventricular strain and failure. Clinical features: We present the case of a 54-yr-old female who underwent orthotopic liver transplantation for alcohol-related liver disease with acute decompensation including severe hepatorenal syndrome (anuric requiring dialysis), probable hepatopulmonary syndrome, moderate pulmonary hypertension (right ventricular systolic pressure, 44 mm Hg), hepatic encephalopathy (grade 2), and esophageal varices. Prior to incision, pulmonary arterial pressures were 48/28 (mean, 35) mm Hg with a central venous pressure of 30 mm Hg, cardiac output of 7.4 L·min−1, and pulmonary vascular resistance of 98 dynes·sec·cm−5. In the context of right ventricular strain and volume overload observed on transthoracic echocardiography, we inserted an additional dialysis catheter into the right femoral vein. We initiated dialysis using the two catheters as a circuit (femoral line to the dialysis machine; blood was reinjected via the subclavian line) acting as a limited venovenous bypass, allowing right ventricular offloading and hemodialysis throughout the case. We removed 4.5 L via hemodialysis during the surgery, while avoiding acidosis, hyperkalemia, and sodium shifts. The patient tolerated reperfusion adequately despite pre-existing right ventricular dilation and dysfunction. Conclusion: We report on the use two hemodialysis catheters in a patient undergoing orthotopic liver transplantation as a circuit for simultaneous anuric hepatorenal syndrome and moderate pulmonary hypertension with right ventricular dilation and dysfunction. We believe this technique was instrumental in the patient’s successful transplant.

Tubulin plays a central role in mitosis and has been the target of multiple anticancer drugs, including paclitaxel. Herein two separate families of 2,3-dihydroquinazoline-4(1H)-ones and quinazoline-4(3H) ones, comprising 57 compounds in total, were synthesised. Screening against a broad panel of human cancer cell lines (HT29 colon, U87 and SJ-G2 glioblastoma, MCF-7 breast, A2780 ovarian, H460 lung, A431 skin, Du145 prostate, BE2-C neuroblastoma, and MIA pancreas) reveals these analogues to be broad spectrum cytotoxic compounds. Of particular note, 2-styrylquinazolin-4(3H)-one 51, 2-(4-hydroxystyryl)quinazolin-4(3H)-one 63, 2-(2-methoxystyryl)quinazolin-4(3H)-one 64and 2-(3-methoxystyryl)quinazolin-4(3H)-one 65and 2-(naphthalen-1-yl)-2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-one 39exhibited sub-μM potency growth inhibition values. Of these 1-naphthyl 39has activity <50 nM against the HT29, U87, A2780, H460 and BE2-C cell lines. Molecular modelling of these compounds, e.g.2-(naphthalen-1-yl)-2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-one 39, 2-(2-methoxystyryl)quinazolin-4(3H)-one 64, 2-(3-methoxystyryl)quinazolin-4(3H)-one 65, and 2-(4-methoxystyryl)quinazolin-4(3H)-one 50docked to the known tubulin polymerisation inhibitor sites highlighted well conserved interactions within the colchicine binding pocket. These compounds were examined in a tubulin polymerisation assay alongside the known tubulin polymerisation promotor, paclitaxel (69), and tubulin inhibitor, nocodazole (68). Of the analogues examined, indoles 43and 47were modest promotors of tubulin polymerisation, but less effective than paclitaxel. Analogues 39, 64, and 65showed reduced microtubule formation consistent with tubulin inhibition. The variation in ring methoxy substituent with 50, 64and 65, from o- to m- to p-, results in a concomitant reduction in cytotoxicity and a reduction in tubulin polymerisation, with p-OCH350being the least active in this series of analogues. This presents 64as a tubulin polymerisation inhibitor possessing novel chemotype and sub micromolar cytotoxicity. Naphthyl 39, with complete inhibition of tubulin polymerisation, gave rise to a sub 0.2 μM cell line cytotoxicity. Compounds 39and 64induced G2+ M cell cycle arrest indicative of inhibition of tubulin polymerisation, with 39inducing an equivalent effect on cell cycle arrest as nocodazole (68).

In the current literature, clinical registry cohorts related to ocular inflammation are few and far between, and there are none involving multi-continental international data. Many existing registries comprise administrative databases, data related to specific uveitic diseases, or are designed to address a particular clinical problem. The existing data, although useful and serving their intended purposes, are segmented and may not be sufficiently robust to design prognostication tools or draw epidemiological conclusions in the field of uveitis and ocular inflammation. To solve this, we have developed the Ocular Autoimmune Systemic Inflammatory Infectious Study (OASIS) Clinical Registry. OASIS collects prospective and retrospective data on patients with all types of ocular inflammatory conditions from centers all around the world. It is a primarily web-based platform with alternative offline modes of access. A comprehensive set of clinical data ranging from demographics, past medical history, clinical presentation, working diagnosis to visual outcomes are collected over a range of time points. Additionally, clinical images such as optical coherence tomography, fundus fluorescein angiography and indocyanine green angiography studies may be uploaded. Through the capturing of diverse, well-structured, and clinically meaningful data in a simplified and consistent fashion, OASIS will deliver a comprehensive and well organized data set ripe for data analysis. The applications of the registry are numerous, and include performing epidemiological analysis, monitoring drug side effects, and studying treatment safety efficacy. Furthermore, the data compiled in OASIS will be used to develop new classification and diagnostic systems, as well as treatment and prognostication guidelines for uveitis.

Transitioning patients from one unit to another is a nursing function that occurs daily. When done effectively, it streamlines continuity of care, decreases anxiety, ensures patients and families maintain confidence in care providers, and avoids readmissions to the intensive care unit (ICU). This article describes a transition plan for transferring patients from the ICU to the general pediatric unit developed by an inpatient, non-critical care cardiology/neuro logical unit to facilitate a smooth and informational transition from the ICU to the non-critical unit. Subsequently, this program incorporated the development of educational materials and a program that provides patients and families with clear information on what to expect, the differences between the two units, and the services available by their healthcare team on the unit to which they are transferred.
