Background: Due to their environmentally friendly character, entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) are becoming increasingly used as microbial agents in biological pest control over chemical pesticides. However, EPF are sensitive to the influence of abiotic factors, such as temperature, radiation, and humidity. To improve their efficiency as bioinsecticides, in this work, the development of a new microparticles-based formulation loading EPF conidia (B. bassianaaerial conidia) into sodium alginate/maltodextrin microparticles obtained by spray-drying was proposed. Different concentrations of both polysaccharides were tested to reach the optimal ratio and ensure a high viability of encapsulated conidia. Results: All the produced formulations showed a moisture content < 10% and water activity (aw) < 0.4. Microparticles obtained with 2% sodium alginate and 8% maltodextrin were able to retain 89.5% of the viability of encapsulated conidia, thus being selected for further characterization. Scanning electron microscopy showed microparticles with a smooth surface, varied sizes, and irregular morphology. Microparticles retained 5.44 × 108conidia/g, presented high hygroscopicity and high suspensibility rate, yet low wettability and water activity (aw) of 0.33. The pH value ranged from 6.46 to 6.62. Microparticles were able to complete release the loaded conidia after 30 min, under constant stirring. When exposed to thermal stress (45 °C), microparticles promoted thermal protection to conidia. Enhanced pathogenicity of B. bassianaconidia against P. xylostellawas also confirmed achieving 83.1 ± 5.5%, whereas non-encapsulated conidia reached only 64.8 ± 9.9%. Conclusions: This study confirms that the encapsulation of B. bassianafungus conidia in sodium alginate/maltodextrin microparticles by spray-drying is a promising technological approach for the biological control of agricultural pests.

Hydrogen embrittlement can occur when atomic hydrogen is absorbed by steel during the acid cleaning process. In the literature, studies of corrosion inhibition by organic compounds in acid solutions have not given attention to the inhibition of hydrogen permeation in the steel. In this work, we show that the best corrosion inhibition does not always indicate the best hydrogen permeation inhibition. For the first time, imidazole-based compounds were studied as hydrogen permeation inhibitors during carbon steel pickling in hydrochloric acid at high concentration (5.4 mol L−1). The immersion of steel in solutions containing 250 mg L−1of the inhibitors 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Bmim]BF4) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Bmim]Cl) resulted in low corrosion inhibition efficiency of approximately 18% in both cases. On the other hand, the hydrogen permeation inhibition efficiency was 59%. The addition of 2-(nitromethylene) imidazolidine (IMD) and 2-(nitromethylene) oxazolidine (OXA) to HCl solutions provided corrosion inhibition efficiencies of 46.7% and 24.4%, respectively. However, these compounds did not present hydrogen permeation inhibition effects.

AbstractCover crop acreage has substantially increased over the last few years due to the intent of growers to capitalize on federal conservation payments and incorporate sustainable practices into agricultural systems. Despite all the known benefits, widespread adoption of cover crops still remains limited due to potential cost and management requirements. Cover crop termination is crucial, because a poorly controlled cover crop can become a weed and lessen the yield potential of the current cash crop. A field study was conducted in fall 2015 and 2016 at the Arkansas Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Fayetteville to evaluate preplant herbicide options for terminating cover crops. Glyphosate-containing treatments controlled 97% to 100% of cereal rye and wheat, but glyphosate alone controlled less than 57% of legume cover crops. The most effective way to control hairy vetch, Austrian winterpea, and crimson clover with glyphosate resulted from mixtures of glyphosate with glufosinate, 2,4-D, and dicamba. Higher rates of auxin herbicides improved control in these mixtures. Glufosinate alone or in mixture controlled legume cover crops 81% or more. Paraquat plus metribuzin was effective in terminating both cereal and legume cover crops, with control of cereal cover crops ranging from 87% to 97% and control of legumes ranging from 90% to 96%. None of these herbicides or mixtures adequately controlled rapeseed.

AbstractResearch was conducted to evaluate the sensitivity of cover crops to a low rate of soil-applied herbicides and investigate the likelihood of herbicide carryover to fall-seeded cover crops following an irrigated corn crop. In the sensitivity study, herbicides were applied at a 1/16×rate (to simulate four half-lives) 1 d after cover crop planting, whereas for the carryover study residual herbicides were applied at a 2×rate at the maximum label corn height or growth stage and cover crops sown immediately after corn harvest. In the sensitivity experiment, atrazine, diuron, fluridone, fomesafen, metribuzin, pyrithiobac, and sulfentrazone reduced emergence of the leguminous cover crops Austrian winterpea, crimson clover, and hairy vetch. However, reduced biomass production of leguminous cover crops in the spring was only observed for atrazine, fluridone, and pyrithiobac. For rapeseed, atrazine, flumioxazin, fluridone, pyrithiobac, pyroxasulfone, sulfentrazone, and tembotrione reduced emergence, but biomass production was reduced only by atrazine and fluridone. Conversely, wheat, cereal rye, barley, oats, and triticale were not affected by soil-applied herbicides. Barley was the only cereal cover crop that showed biomass reduction due to the application of flumioxazin, fluridone, mesotrione, S-metalochlor, and sulfentrazone. In the carryover study, with the exception of crimson clover, Austrian winterpea, cereal rye, hairy vetch, rapeseed, and wheat showed no negative affect on biomass production following a 2×rate of postemergence-applied residual herbicide in corn.

AbstractWith the recent confirmation of protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO)-resistant Palmer amaranth in the US South, concern is increasing about the sustainability of weed management in cotton production systems. Cover crops can help to alleviate this problem, as they can suppress weed emergence via allelochemicals and/or a physical residue barrier. Field experiments were conducted in 2014 and 2015 at the Arkansas Agricultural Research and Extension Center to evaluate various cover crops for suppressing weed emergence and protecting cotton yield. In both years, cereal rye and wheat had the highest biomass production, whereas the amount of biomass present in spring did not differ among the remaining cover crops. All cover crops initially diminished Palmer amaranth emergence. However, cereal rye provided the greatest suppression, with 83% less emergence than in no cover crop plots. Physical suppression of Palmer amaranth and other weeds with cereal residues is probably the greatest contributor to reducing weed emergence. Seed cotton yield in the legume and rapeseed cover crop plots were similar when compared with the no cover crop treatment. The seed cotton yield collected from cereal cover crop plots was lower than from other treatments due to decreased cotton stand.

Periods of decreased feed intake may disrupt function of the intestinal barrier. Feeding NutriTek®(NTK; Diamond V, Cedar Rapids, IA), a postbiotic from S. cerevisiaefermentation (SCFP), improved health and supported anti-inflammatory functions. We investigated the effects of feeding NTK to cows before and during a period of feed restriction (FR) designed to model periods of intestinal barrier dysfunction. In total, 16 multiparous cows (97.1 ± 7.6 DIM; n = 8/group) were fed a control diet (CON) or CON plus 19 g/d NTK for 9 wk (Phase 1; P1) and then were subjected to an FR challenge for 5 d, during which they were fed 40% of their ad libitum intake from the 7 d prior to FR. Milk yield (MY) and DMI were collected daily. During FR, milk was collected daily for composition, blood daily to measure plasma biomarkers and to measure monocyte and neutrophil phagocytosis and oxidative burst on d 1, 3, and 5. Data were analyzed using a mixed model in SAS 9.4. All data were subjected to repeated measures ANOVA. Dietary treatment (TRT), Day, and their interaction (TRT × Day) were considered as fixed effects and cow as the random effect. For analysis of P1, data collected during a 7-d adaptation phase were used as a covariate. During P1, NTK cows tended to have greater DMI and had greater fat, ECM and FCM yields, and feed efficiency (ECM/DMI and FCM/DMI). Protein yield tended to be greater in NTK compared with CON cows. A tendency for greater monocyte phagocytosis was detected with NTK. However, during FR, feeding NTK led to lower MY and lactose yield and tended to lower solids percentage. While NTK cows tended to have reduced neutrophil oxidative burst than CON cows during FR (NTK: 26.20%, CON: 36.93%), there was no difference in phagocytosis (NTK: 7.92%, CON: 6.31%). Plasma biomarkers of energy metabolism, liver function, inflammation, and oxidative stress during the FR period did not differ. Overall, results suggested that feeding NTK increased the yield of FCM, ECM, feed efficiency and milk components prior to FR.A Saccharomyces cerevisiaefermentation product fed to lactating cows enhances production performance.Postbiotic fermentation products have the potential to improve health and support anti-inflammatory functions when fed to lactating dairy cows. Since dairy cows experience disruptions of the intestinal barrier function at various stages of their life, for example, the transition into lactation, we sought to investigate potential beneficial effects of feeding a Saccharomyces cerevisiaefermentation (NTK) before and during a period of feed restriction to challenge gut function. Although feeding NTK increased yield of energy-corrected milk and feed efficiency prior to feed restriction (FR), it had no effect on production or plasma indices of metabolism, inflammation, and liver function during a period of abrupt FR to 40% of baseline feed intake.

We present an unusual case of spontaneous epidural hemorrhage in the thoracic spine resulting in rapid onset of transient and extensive edema in the spinal cord. The patient presented with acute onset of midscapular back pain, bilateral lower extremity weakness, and bladder dysfunction. Repeat MRI 20 days after decompression of the hematoma showed residual hematoma and complete resolution of the spinal cord edema. The implications and differential diagnosis of spinal cord edema in this clinical setting are discussed.
