Since the construction of the Diama Dam (1985), the epidemiology of schistosomiasis along the Senegal River Basin (SRB) has been extremely dynamic with outbreaks of both intestinal and urogenital schistosomiasis. In the early 2000s, technicians reported cases of suspected urogenital schistosomiasis in adults from the local hospital in Richard-Toll, Lower SRB. The genetic analysis of schistosome miracidia isolated from 11 patients in 2012 from two neighbourhoods (Campement and Gaya) of Richard-Toll confirmed infection with Schistosoma haematobium but also S. haematobium / S. bovis hybrids. Thirty-seven per cent of the miracidia were S. bovis / S. haematobium hybrids and 63% were pure S. haematobium. The data are discussed in relation to the ongoing dynamic epidemiology of the schistosomes in Senegal and the need to treat non-target individuals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new microsporidian Toguebayea baccigerin. gen., n. sp., hyperparasite of Bacciger israelensis(Digenea, Faustulidae), parasite of Boops boops(Teleostei, Sparidae) is described by means of transmission electron microscopy. The phylogenetic analysis, based on the SSU rDNA gene, places the new species in the clade containing mainly crustacean-infecting microsporidia of the genus Cucumispora, within superclade V (Marinosporidia) sensuVossbrinck et al., 2014. Mature spores of T. baccigeriare ovoid, uninucleated and measure 2.5 × 1.4 μm. The number of coils of the polar tube is 8–10. The polaroplast is composed of an external lamellar part and an internal vesicular or granular part. The main differences that distinguish the new genus and new species from the closely related microsporidia include hyperparasitism in a digenean host infecting a marine fish, the geographic distribution (coast of Tunisia), presence of one nucleus at all developmental stages, disporoblastic sporogony, and the absence of sporophorous vacuoles.

The ultrastructure of the mature spermatozoa of Tergestia clonacanthaand T. laticolliscollected from the digestive tracts of fishes from New Caledonia is described using transmission electron microscopy and compared to that of related species. The spermatozoa of the two species exhibit the general pattern described in most digeneans, namely two axonemes with the 9 + “1” pattern of the Trepaxonemata, nucleus, mitochondrion, cortical microtubules, an external ornamentation of the plasma membrane, spine-like bodies and granules of glycogen. The spermatozoa of T. clonacanthaand T. laticollisshow the same ultrastructural model with some specificities in each case, particularly in the disposition of the structures in the posterior extremities of the spermatozoon. This study confirms that ultrastructural characters of the mature spermatozoon are useful tools for the phylogenetic analysis of the Digenea.

Ultrastructural study of spermiogenesis and of the spermatozoon of Carmyerius endopapillatus has enabled to describe some characteristics of this digenea. The intercentriolar body situated between the two striated roots and the two centrioles, presents a symmetric organization. Both external bands of this intercentriolar body are made up of a row of granules. During spermiogenesis, a flagellar rotation of 90° is described. The old spermatid does not present external ornamentations. The spermatozoon is characterized, in its anterior region, by the presence of a lateral expansion exhibiting one spinelike body. In C. endopapillatus, external ornamentations are localized only at the level where the lateral expansion appears. The posterior extremity of spermatozoon exhibits a nucleus surrounded by a plasmic membrane lacking microtubules, but presenting a small lateral expansion. This is the first species of Gastrothylacidae family studied by transmission electron microscopy.

The ultrastructure of the spermatozoon of Calliobothrium verticillatum(Cestoda, Tetraphyllidea, Oncobothriidae) parasite of the smoothhound shark, Mustelus mustelusL. (Pisces, Carcharhiniformes), was studied by transmission electron microscopy. This spermatozoon presents five regions characterized by several ultrastructural elements: an apical cone, a crested body, two axonemes of 9 + “1” pattern, electron-dense granules, a nucleus and cortical microtubules. In the present study, three of these features were the subject of a detailed attention. The first is the presence of two axonemes, which confirms that the Tetraphyllidea, Oncobothriidae possess two axonemes whereas the Tetraphyllidea, Phyllobothriidae possess only one axoneme. The second is the presence of one crested body, a criterion homogeneous in the Tetraphyllidea but heterogeneous among the different orders of Cestoda. The third is the number and the disposition of cortical microtubules. These three criteria seem to be interesting for phylogeny.

Abstract: Spermiogenesis in Mesostoma viaregginum begins with the formation of a zone of differentiation containing striated rootlets, two centrioles, and an intercentriolar body in-between. These centrioles generate two parallel free-flagella with the 9+“1” pattern of the Trepaxonemata growing out in opposite directions. Spermatid differentiation is characterised by a 90° latero-ventral rotation of flagella and a subsequent disto-proximal centriolar rotation, with a distal cytoplasmic projection. The former rotation involves the compression of a row of cortical microtubules and allows recognising a flagellar side and an aflagellar side in the late spermatid and in the mature spermatozoon. At the end of the differentiation, centrioles and microtubules lie parallel to the spermatid axis. The disto-proximal centriolar rotation is proposed as a synapomorphy for the Rhabdocoela. The modifications of the intercentriolar body during spermiogenesis and the migration of the nucleus and the centrioles towards the cytoplasmic distal projection are also described. The mature spermatozoon of M. viaregginum is filiform and tapered at both ends and presents many features found in the Rhabdocoela gametes. The nucleus disappears before the flagellar insertion and a density gradient of mitochondria is observed along the sperm axis. The anterior end of the spermatozoon of M. viaregginum is characterised by a tapering capped by a membrane expansion. This study has enabled us to describe precisely the orientation of spermatozoa in the Rhabdocoela in general: the centriolar extremity is proposed as the anterior one for the Rhabdocoela.

Abstract: Spermiogenesis and ultrastructure of the spermatozoon of the pseudophyllidean cestode Triaenophorus nodulosus (Pallas, 1781), a parasite of pike Esox lucius, has been studied by transmission electron microscopy. Spermiogenesis involves firstly the formation of a zone of differentiation with two centrioles associated with striated roots, and an intercentriolar body between them, subsequent growth of the two flagella of unequal length, and a formation of a median cytoplasmic process exhibiting patches of dense material. The nucleus penetrates into spermatid body after flagellar rotation and proximo-distal fusion has started. The mature spermatozoon of T. nodulosus is filiform and contains two axonemes of 9+“1” pattern of the Trepaxonemata, nucleus, cortical microtubules parallel to the spermatozoon axis, and electron-dense granules. The anterior extremity of the gamete contains a single centriole surrounded by numerous electron-dense tubular structures exhibiting spiral arrangement and giving rise to lateral projections, which correspond to the crested body. When the crested body disappears, the spiral pattern of electron-dense tubular structures is changed into a ring, persisting until the centriole of the second axonemes appears. This structure of the crested body of T. nodulosus is unique among the Eucestoda.

The mature Raillietina (Raillietina) baeri spermatozoon exhibits an apical cone of electron-dense material about 2.5 μm long and 0.5 μm wide and two helicoidal crest-like bodies roughly 100–125 nm thick. The latter are of different lengths, spiralized and stand in an angle of about 50° with the spermatozoon axis. The axoneme is of the 9 + “1” pattern and does not reach the posterior extremity of the gamete. The nucleus is an electron-dense cord coiled in a spiral around the axoneme. The cytoplasm exhibits a posterior densification and contains few small electron-dense granules in regions I, II and V of the spermatozoon. In regions III and IV, it is divided into irregular compartments by walls of electron-dense material. The cortical microtubules are spiralized and make an angle of 40–50° to the spermatozoon axis. In this work, we describe, for the first time, a spermatozoon of a davaineidaean cestode parasitic of mammals. This has enabled us to show a wide apical cone, which has never been described before in a cyclophyllidean species the spermatozoon of which has two crest-like bodies.

Abstract This work describes the first ultrastructural results on spermiogenesis and on the mature spermatozoon of Dicrocoelium hospes (Trematoda, Digenea) collected in Bos indicus from Senegal (Africa). Examination of this species was processed by TEM. Spermiogenesis follows the general pattern found in the digenean, but reveals a particularity consisting of the appearance of glycogen granules in the late spermatids within the testes. The mature spermatozoon possesses five distinct regions and presents all features found in Digenea gametes: two axonemes, mitochondria, nucleus and parallel cortical microtubules. However, several characters allow us to distinguish D. hospes from other digenetic trematodes within the Dicrocoeliidae family. In fact, we observed several structures that are absent in the other species of Dicrocoeliidae studied until now, such as: a cytoplasmic expansion, extramembranar ornamentation, spine-like bodies and two parallel mitochondria in the mature sperm. Moreover, additional particular characteristics were observed in this species in both extremities of the spermatozoon. This work produced new data on the ultrastructure of this trematode family which may be useful for phylogenetic purposes.

The present work involves an ultrastructural study of the mature spermatozoon of the anoplocephalid cestode Gallegoides arfaai (Mobedi and Ghadirian, 1977) Tenora and Mas-Coma, 1978, obtained from the small intestine of naturally infected wood mice, Apodemus sylvaticus Linnaeus, 1758 (Rodentia, Muridae). The mature spermatozoon of G. arfaai is a filiform cell, tapered at both ends and lacking mitochondria. It is characterized by the presence of a 1,000-nm-long apical cone and two 140-nm-thick crest-like bodies in its anterior extremity. The axoneme, of the 9+’1’ trepaxonematan pattern, lacks a periaxonemal sheath, and disorganization occurs at the level of the nuclear region of the sperm cell. The cortical microtubules form two to four fields according to the different regions of the male gamete. They are twisted at an angle of about 35°, becoming parallel towards the posterior extremity of spermatozoon. The nucleus, spiralled around the axoneme, shows an irregular shape in both longitudinal and cross-sections. Numerous electron-dense granules were observed, which transform into an electron-dense material in the posterior extremity of the cell. Moreover, we describe for the first time the total length of the anterior region of sperm containing the helical crest-like bodies. This anterior extremity measures around 15 μm and presents two helical crest-like bodies of different lengths that describe 13–14 turns around the sperm body. Our ultrastructural results on the G. arfaai spermatozoon are compared with the ultrastructural organization of the spermatozoa of other previously studied species, with particular emphasis on the anoplocephalids.

This paper constitutes the first ultrastructural study of spermiogenesis and the spermatozoon of a Digenea belonging to the family Zoogonidae, Diphterostomum brusinae. Spermiogenesis follows the general pattern found in the digeneans. It begins with the formation of a differentiation zone in the spermatid. The two centrioles give rise to flagella. These two flagella undergo a rotation of 90° and fuse with the median cytoplasmic process. The proximo-distal fusion occurs at the level of attachment zones. The mature spermatozoon of D. brusinae presents all the features found in the digeneans gametes: two axonemes, mitochondrion, nucleus and two bundles of parallel cortical microtubules. Nevertheless, several characteristics distinguish the spermatozoon of D. brusinae from other digeneans, in particular the external ornamentations of the plasma membrane and the anterior and posterior extremities. The description of the ultrastructural features of reproduction in this species would contribute to the understanding of the phylogenetic relationships in the Zoogonidae family.

The present paper describes the characteristic ultrastructural features of spermiogenesis and the spermatozoon of Monorchis parvus (Trematoda, Digenea, Monorchiidae). This spermiogenesis is characterized by a flagellar rotation of about 120° and the formation of a novel ultrastructural element: a centriolar extension. It nevertheless follows the general pattern of digeneans. It begins with the formation of a differentiation zone, comprising striated rootlets associated with two centrioles and an intercentriolar body. The mature spermatozoon presents features allowing the distinction between M. parvus and other digenetic trematodes. It possesses an original anterior extremity. The two central elements of the axonemes appear prior to the peripheral doublets. The external ornamentations of the cell membrane are formed parallel to the central elements. Another peculiarity of the male gamete is the presence of two mitochondria. M. parvus, therefore, differs distinctly from other digenetic trematodes.

This paper describes the ultrastructure of spermiogenesis and the spermatozoon of Leptorhynchoides plagicephalus, an acanthocephalan parasite of the sturgeon Acipenser naccarii, a species which is under the threat of extinction. At the beginning, spermiogenesis in L. plagicephalus is characterized by the presence of a single centriole in the early spermatid. This centriole generates a flagellum with a 9+0 pattern. Another ultrastructural feature observed during the spermiogenesis of L. plagicephalus is the condensation of chromatin to form an “intranuclear wall”. The mature spermatozoon of L. plagicephalus presents a reversed anatomy, as observed in other species of the Acanthocephala. The spermatozoon is divided into two parts: an axoneme and a nucleocytoplasmic derivative. The pattern of spermiogenesis and the ultrastructural organization of the spermatozoon of L. plagicephalus are compared with information available on other acanthocephalan species. The appearance of an “intranuclear wall” observed during the present study represents the first record within the Acanthocephala and is unknown from other animal taxa.

This paper describes the ultrastructure of spermiogenesis and the mature spermatozoon of two Dipylidiidae cestodes, Joyeuxiella echinorhynchoides and J. pasqualei. In both species, spermiogenesis follows the type III described by Bâ and Marchand for the cyclophyllideans. Nevertheless, it is interesting to note the presence of striated roots associated with the centrioles. The spermatozoon presents the same ultrastructural features in J. echinorhynchoides and J. pasqualei. The apical cone in the anterior extremity of the sperm is more than 2.0 µm long in both J. echinorhynchoides and J. pasqualei. Both species present a single crest-like body, 150 nm thick in J. echinorhynchoides and 75 nm thick in J. pasqualei. The cortical microtubules are spiralled at an angle of 40–45° to the spermatozoon axis in both Joyeuxiella species. A periaxonemal sheath and glycogen granules are also described in the mature sperm. We also describe, for the first time, the disposition of glycogen granules in two opposed and spiralled cords in cestodes and the formation of the periaxonemal sheath in the final stage of spermiogenesis.

To our knowledge, this is the first ultrastructural study on spermiogenesis and the spermatozoon of a trematode belonging to the family Notocotylidae, Notocotylus neyrai. Spermiogenesis begins with the formation of the zone of differentiation which comprises striated rootlets associated with the two centrioles and an intercentriolar body in-between. It is characterised by an asynchronic flagellar rotation and subsequent proximodistal fusion with a median cytoplasmic process. The migration of the nucleus toward the median cytoplasmic process before its fusion with the free flagella is also described. The mature spermatozoon of N. neyrai is filiform and tapered at both ends and presents all the features found in the Digenea gamete: two axonemes, mitochondrion, nucleus and two bundles of parallel cortical microtubules. Nevertheless, several characters allow us to distinguish N. neyrai from other digenetic trematodes.

Abstract. We studied the ultrastructure of spermiogenesis and of the mature spermatozoon of Taenia parva, an intestinal cestode of the common genet, Genetta genetta. Spermiogenesis in T. parva is characterized by the growth of the axoneme externally to a cytoplasmic extension. After a slight rotation, the free flagellum fuses with the cytoplasmic extension. This pattern corresponds to type III spermiogenesis according to the scheme proposed by Bâ and Marchand. The zone of differentiation lacks both striated roots associated with the centrioles and the intercentriolar body between them. Nevertheless, the flagellar rotation of about 45° is observed in this species. On the other hand, the mature spermatozoon of T. parva, as in other cestodes, is filiform, tapered at both extremities and lacks mitochondria. The presence of a single crest-like body, periaxonemal sheath, and transverse intracytoplasmic walls are also characteristic ultrastructural features. The pattern of spermiogenesis and the ultrastructural organization of the spermatozoon of T. parva are compared with the available data on cyclophyllideans and, in particular, species of the family Taeniidae.

AbstractThe abundance of a given species is usually expressed in terms of either the number of individuals per unit area or volume (i.e., density), or biomass. These two abundance metrics generate different results at both the statistical analysis level (e.g., comparison of means) and the ecological level (e.g., diversity comparisons). We seek here to unify different abundance metrics using the formula A= N(B/N)k/3where Ais the abundance of a given species, krepresents a fractional dimension, Nis the number of individuals per unit of area and Bis the biomass of the sampled species. When k= 0, Ais density and when k= 3, Ais the biomass. Avalue of k= 1 would give abundance approximately proportional to the sum of the length of individuals and k= 2 would give abundance approximately proportional to the sum of their surface areas. Metrics intermediate between density, length, area and biomass are possible using non-integer values of k.Applying this methodology to ichthyological data characterized by highly variable intraspecies biomass, we examined the effect of the abundance metric on the results of a three-factor analysis of variance (depth, season and site). In some cases, differences which could not be seen with either density or biomass could be seen with intermediate metrics. We suggest that many ecological results could be usefully evaluated in terms of the effect of the fractional dimension of sampling. In some cases, such an approach could identify the optimal metric.

The present paper describes the ultrastructure of spermatozoa of Taenia mustelae as revealed by transmission electron microscopy. The mature spermatozoon of this tenid is filiform, tapered at both ends, and lacks mitochondrion. It is capped by an apical cone of electron-dense material and presents a single helical crest-like body 75-nm thick. The axoneme is of the 9+'1' pattern of trepaxonematan platyhelminthes and lacks a periaxonemal sheath. Transverse intracytoplasmic walls are observed in several regions of the spermatozoon. In cross-section, the spiralled nucleus shows a horse-shoe to annulus shape. The submembranous cortical microtubules are spiralled at an angle of about 45° to the hypothetical spermatozoon axis.

Abstract: Spermiogenesis and mature spermatozoa of Opecoeloides furcatus (Digenea, Opecoelidae) are described by means of transmission electron microscopy. Spermiogenesis in this fluke matches the general pattern of digenetic trematodes. Striated rootlets associated with the two centrioles and an intercentriolar body are present in the differentiation zone. Flagellar rotation of two flagella and their proximodistal fusion with a median cytoplasmic process also characterize the spermiogenesis of O. furcatus. Nevertheless, asynchronicity is reported for the proximodistal fusion of the two flagella. Mature spermatozoa of O. furcatus are filiform, tapering at both ends and they present all the characteristic features found in the Digenea gamete: two flagella, mitochondrion, nucleus and two bundles of parallel cortical microtubules. Nevertheless several peculiarities distinguish the mature spermatozoon of O. furcatus from the gamete of other digenetic trematodes.

Nosema birgii n.sp. (Microsporida, Nosematidae) was found in larvae and adults ofMesoplatys cincta (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) from Senegal. It attacked various tissues and caused a general infection. Its life cycle and the ultrastructure of its stages were typical of the genusNosema. The living spores were oval, elongate and measured 6.20±0.21 µm×3.5±0.18 µm. Their polar filament formed 12 to 14 coils and their polaroplast was lamellar and vesicular.

Patients sensitive to phenyl salicylate (salol) were patch-tested to several aryl salicylates. The most powerful derivative was p-nitrophenyl salicylate (compound 5). This can be explained by an unusually good interaction with protein (nucleophilic substitution on the carboxyl carbon). All these results were confirmed by experimental sensitization of guinea pigs to salol and cross-reaction to substituted salols. The results are in line with current theory of allergic contact dermatitis, i.e., an in vivo formation of a hapten-protein conjugate.

Abstract We report for the first time the ultrastructure of the spermatozoon of a Dilepididae cestode. The mature spermatozoa of Dipylidium caninum is filiform and tapered at both ends and lacks mitochondria. The anterior extremity exhibits an apical cone of electron-dense material measuring about 600 nm in length and a single helicoidal crested-like body that is 150 nm thick. This single crested-like body is spiralized at an angle of about 40° to the spermatozoon axis. The axoneme, showing the 9 + "1" pattern of the Platyhelminthes, lacks a periaxonemal sheath. The cortical microtubules constitute a continuous, submembranous, electron-dense material, and they are also twisted at an angle of about 40° to the spermatozoon axis. Moreover, the nucleus is coiled in a helix around the axoneme, which is centrally located throughout its length. We demonstrate for the first time the presence of peripheral microtubules twisted to the spermatozoon axis up to the posterior extremity of the gamete.

Spermiogenesis in Aporina delafondibegins with the formation of a differentiation zone bordered by cortical microtubules and containing from the beginning a portion of nucleus and two parallel centrioles. One of the centrioles aborts, the other gives rise to a flagellum. The cortical microtubules elongate and spiralize while the nucleus migrates along the axoneme and crest-like bodies form at the level of the differentiation zone. The old spennatid separates from the residual cytoplasm by strangulation of the ring of arched membranes. The mature spermatozoon lacks mitochondria, is filiform and tapered at both its extremities. Its anterior extremity is capped by an apical cone of electron-dense material and exhibits five crest-like bodies of unequal lengths on its periphery. Its cortical microtubules are regularly spiralized except at their posterior extremity where they become parallel to the spermatozoon axis. The cytoplasm is slightly dense in the anterior regions (I and II) and exhibits many protein granules and patches of electron-lucent material in the middle (III) and posterior zones (IV and V). The nucleus is an electron-dense cord coiled in a spiral around the middle region (III) of the axoneme. This is of the 9 + “1” pattern and ends before the posterior extremity of the gamete. Spermiogenesis in Aporina delafondidiffers from that of the other Cyclophyllidea by the very early movement of the nucleus into the differentiation zone, the formation of a ring of arched membranes in the distal part of the differentiation zone, the appearance of crest-like bodies during migration of the nucleus and the formation of a cytoplasmic bud which contains the abortive centriole and develops to temporarily form a large lateral extension. The mature spermatozoon differs from that of the other Cyclophyllidea in the presence of lucent patches in its cytoplasm and of five helicoidal crest-like bodies. The systematic position of the genus Aporinais also debated.

Spermiogenesis in Raillietina (Raillietina) tunetensisbegins with the formation of a differentiation zone equipped with cortical microtubules and containing two centrioles. One of the centrioles very rapidly gives rise to a flagellum which fuses with a median cytoplasmic extension, the cortical microtubules elongate and arched membranes appear. After the migration of the nucleus two crest-like bodies form and the old spermatid becomes detached from the residual cytoplasm. The mature spermatozoon of R. (R.) tunetensisexhibits an apical cone of electron-dense material and two helicoidal crest-like bodies 100 to 200 nm thick. The cortical microtubules are spiralized and make an angle of about 60° to the spermatozoon axis. The axoneme is of the 9 + “1” pattern and does not reach the posterior extremity of the gamete. The nucleus is a fine, compact cord wound in a spiral which may make as much as two complete coils round the axoneme. The cytoplasm is electron-dense in region V of the spermatozoon. Over the rest of the gamete it is made up of lucent material divided into irregular compartments by electron-dense material. The latter consists of a fine, discontinuous peri-axonemal sheath, a fine granular sub-microtubular layer situated in regions I and II, and irregularly spaced partitions localized in regions III and IV. A nucleus with an annular cross section has never been described in a cestode spermatozoon; nor have two crest-like bodies of different length and thickness. In addition we report for the first time the existence of crest-like bodies in the Davaineidae.

The nucleus is an electron-dense cord coiled in a spiral around the axoneme. The cytoplasm is slightly dense but contains many electron-dense granules in regions III, IV, and V of the spermatozoon. The presence of centrioles linked together at their bases by electron-dense material has never, to our knowledge, been reported in a Platyhelminth. Likewise, a nuclear migration, right from the beginning to the end of spermiogenesis, has never been described in a cestode. The cortical microtubules are spiralized and make an angle of about 20 to 30° to the spermatozoon axis, except at their posterior extremity where they become parallel to this axis. The nucleus is an electron‐dense cord coiled in a spiral around the axoneme. The cytoplasm is slightly dense but contains many electron‐dense granules in regions III, IV, and V of the spermatozoon. The presence of centrioles linked together at their bases by electron‐dense material has never, to our knowledge, been reported in a Platyhelminth. Likewise, a nuclear migration, right from the beginning to the end of spermiogenesis, has never been described in a cestode. The mature H. straminea spermatozoon is filiform and lacks mitochondria. It exhibits an apical cone of electron-dense material and eight helicoidal crest-like bodies 50-100 nm in thickness. The cortical microtubules are spiralized and make an angle of about 30° to the spermatozoon axis. The axoneme, of the 9+“1” pattern of the Platyhelminthes, does not reach the extremities of the spermatozoon. The nucleus is a compact cord wound in a spiral around the axoneme. Depending on the level of section it appears annular or crescent-shaped. The cytoplasm exhibits many electron-dense granules in regions III, IV and V of the gamete. A nucleus with both annular and crescent-shaped sections has never been described in a species of the Hymenolepididae. In addition we report for the first time the existence of eight crest-like bodies of different length in the cestodes.

Abstract: The mature Paranoplocephala omphalodes spermatozoon is filiform, tapered at both ends and lacks mitochondria. Its anterior extremity exhibits an apical cone of electron-dense material measuring about 900 nm in length and 200 nm in width, and two crested-like bodies. The cortical microtubules follow a 25–35° helicoidal path along their whole length, except at the posterior extremity where they become parallel to the spermatozoon axis. They are arranged in a single or two fields which may cover each other partially. The axoneme, of the 9+“1” pattern of the Trepaxonemata, lacks a peri-axonemal sheath and does not reach the extremity of the spermatozoon. The nucleus is a compact and irregular cord coiled in a spiral around the axoneme. Moreover, we report for the first time a nucleus in the spermatozoon of a Cyclophyllidea species which reaches beyond the axonemal posterior extremity. The cytoplasm, depending on the level where the section is cut, is slightly electron dense or electron lucent and contains numerous small electron-dense granules in regions III–V. In the posterior spermatozoon extremity, granular material is replaced by a terminal and compact electron-dense material.

The mature S. sandoni spermatozoon exhibits an apical cone of electron-dense material about 1 μm long and a helicoidal crest-like body 50-100 nm thick. The cortical microtubules, varying in number from 0 to 18 depending on where the section is cut, are of different lengths, spiralized, and in close contact with the plasma membrane in regions III and IV of the spermatozoon where they form one or two fields of 1 to 9 units, which are associated with electron-dense subjacent material and are either laterally delimited or not by submembranous thickenings. The cytoplasm contains amorphous electron-dense material in regions II, III and IV of the gamete. The nucleus is a fine cord coiled in a spiral around the axoneme. This is of the 9+“1” pattern. Its posterior extremity is made up of only the axial element surrounded by nine singlets formed by the A microtubules attached to the plasma membrane. This type of posterior extremity of the flagellum has never been described in a platyhelminth. Similarly, submembranous thickenings and microtubular fields associated with electron-dense subjacent material have never been observed in a cestode spermatozoon. Moreover we report for the first time the existence of a spermatozoon with a single axoneme and crest-like bodies in the Proteocephalidea.

High performance liquid chromatography was used to quantify the sesquiterpene phenolic esters, Guayulin A and -B in Parthenium argentatum (guayule) and F1hybrids of guayule with Parthenium schottii, P. fruticosum var. trilobatum and P. tomentosum var. stramonium. The distri­bution of these phenolic acid esters in all parts of the plants are reported and their inheritance in hybrids is discussed.

Treatment of nonenolizable and enolizable thioketones, first with disodium tetracarbonylferrate and then with an acid chloride, affords saturated and unsaturated thioesters, respectively. Mechanisms are proposed for these different reactions.

The ultrastructural organization of the mature spermatozoon of the digenean Atractotrema sigani(from Siganus lineatusoff New Caledonia) was investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The male gamete of A. siganiexhibits the general morphology described in digeneans with the presence of two axonemes of different lengths showing the 9 + “1” pattern of the Trepaxonemata, a nucleus, two mitochondria, two bundles of parallel cortical microtubules, external ornamentation, spine-like bodies and granules of glycogen. However, the mature spermatozoon of A. siganihas some specific characters such as the morphology of its anterior region and the submembranous electron-dense material. Although similar structures have been reported in some digenean species, the presence of a submembranous electron-dense material describing a complete ring is reported here for the first time in the mature spermatozoon of A. sigani. In addition, sperm characteristics are compared between the Haploporoidea and their supposed close superfamilies, and possible phylogenetic implications of these findings for the Digenea are discussed.

This study provides the first ultrastructural data of spermatozoa in the genus Lecithochirium.The spermatozoa of L. microstomum(from Trichiurus lepturusin Senegal) and L. musculus(from Anguilla anguillain Corsica) exhibit the general pattern described in the great majority of the Digenea, namely two axonemes with the 9 + “1” pattern typical of the Trepaxonemata, one mitochondrion, a nucleus, parallel cortical microtubules and external ornamentation of the plasma membrane. Spermatozoa of L. microstomumand L. musculushave some specific features such as the presence of a reduced number of cortical microtubules arranged on only one side of the spermatozoon, the lack of spine-like bodies and expansion of the plasma membrane. The external ornamentation of the plasma membrane entirely covers the anterior extremity of the spermatozoa. The ultrastructure of the posterior extremity of the spermatozoa corresponds to the pattern previously described in the Hemiuridae, characterized by only singlets of the second axoneme. A particularity of these spermatozoa is the organization of the microtubule doublets of the second axoneme around the nucleus in the posterior part of the spermatozoon.

The spermatological characteristics of Collyricloides massanae(Digenea: Collyriclidae), a parasite of Apodemus sylvaticuscaught in France, were studied by means of transmission electron microscopy. The mature sperm of C. massanaepresents two axonemes of different lengths with the 9 + “1” pattern of the Trepaxonemata, two bundles of parallel cortical microtubules, external ornamentation of the plasma membrane, spine-like bodies, one mitochondrion, a nucleus and granules of glycogen. An analysis of spermatological organisation emphasised some differences between the mature spermatozoon of C. massanaeand those reported in the Gorgoderoidea species studied to date, specially belonging to the families Dicrocoeliidae, Paragonimidae and Troglotrematidae. The ultrastructural criteria described in C. massanaesuch as the morphology of both anterior and posterior spermatozoon extremities, the association “external ornamentation + cortical microtubules”, the type 2 of external ornamentation and the spine-like bodies would allow us to bring closer the Collyriclidae to Microphalloidea. However, further ultrastructural and molecular studies are needed particularly in the unexplored taxa in order to fully resolve the phylogenetic position of the Collyriclidae.

Nosema podocotyloidisn. sp. (Microsporidia, Nosematidae) is described from Podocotyloides magnatestis(Trematoda: Opecoelidae), a parasite of the fish Parapristipoma octolineatum(Teleostei) in the Atlantic Ocean. Electron microscopy reveals that all the stages of the cycle (merogony and sporogony) are diplokaryotic and in direct contact with the cytoplasm of host cells. There is no sporophorous vesicle (pansporoblast). The earliest stages observed are meronts, which have a simple plasmic membrane. Their cytoplasm is granular, rich in ribosomes and contains some sacculi of endoplasmic reticulum. They divide by binary fission into diplokaryotic sporonts. The sporonts have a thick electron-dense wall. Their diplokaryon is slightly less electron-dense than the cytoplasm. The cytoplasm of more advanced sporonts has numerous electron-lucent vesicles. Sporonts with two diplokarya divide by binary fission into diplokaryotic sporoblasts. The older sporoblasts are irregular or elongate and the polar filament is in formation. Their cytoplasm is denser, with ribosomes and lamellae of granular endoplasmic reticulum. The sporoblasts evolve into spores. The mature spores are broadly oval and measure 3.6 (3.1–4.0) × 2.58 (1.8–3.3) μm. Their wall is 100–300 nm thick. The polar tube is isofilar with 11–16 coils, 130–155 nm in diameter and arranged in many layers in the centre of the spore. The polaroplast is divided into two regions: an outer electron-dense cup with granular content and lacking lamellae and an internal region, less electron-dense, composed of irregularly arranged sacs. The posterior vacuole, with an amorphous electron-dense content, is present. The new species is compared with other species of Nosemafrom trematodes.

Pterygodermatites (Mesopectines) quentinin. sp. (Nematoda, Rictulariidae) is described from the murine host Praomys rostratusin the south of the Republic of Mali. It differs from other species of the subgenus by the morphology of the head, which bears four simple cephalic papillae and a nearly axial oral opening, the number of caudal papillae, the number of precloacal cuticular formations, unequal spicules and the ratio of spicule lengths/body length. The use of scanning electron microscopy in combination with conventional light microscopy enabled us to give a detailed description of the morphological characters of this new species.

We describe the vitellogenesis and oogenesis of Crepidostomum metoecusfrom Salmo truttacollected in Corsica. This is the first study conducted in the Allocreadiidae family. The maturation of C. metoecusvitellocytes comprises four different stages depending on organelle content. The follicular vitellarium is surrounded by a basal lamina. Vitellocytes are randomly distributed into the vitellarium, although fully mature vitellocytes are found in the center of the follicle. During maturation, the nucleo-cytoplasmic ratio decreases, whereas synthetic activity increases. Fully mature vitellocytes are filled with β-glycogen particles and shell globule clusters. Compared to other trematodes studied, C. metoecuspossesses a large amount of nutritive reserves for the developing embryo and high quantities of material for the developing shell. Oocyte maturation takes place in four stages: oogonia, primary oocytes, developing oocytes, and mature oocytes. Developing oocytes enter the zygotene-pachytene stage of the first meiotic division recognizable by the presence of synaptonemal complexes in the nucleoplasm. The low protein composition of mature oocytes associated with the large nutrient content of vitellocytes of C. metoecusenables us to consider that oocytes do not take part of the nutrition of the future embryo of the miracidium. A cytochemical test (Thiéry method) allowed us to detect the presence of polysaccharides and glycogen during maturation of these two cell types.
