Purpose: In patients with Primary Hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) vitamin D deficiency has been associated with more severe presentations. Our aim was to investigate the effects of Vitamin D supplementation on mineral homeostasis and related hormones in individuals with and without PHPT. Methods: Individuals with and without PHPT (CTRL) received 14,000 IU/week of oral vitamin D3for 12 weeks. At baseline and endpoint, blood samples were collected to measure 1,25(OH)2vitamin D (1,25(OH)2D), intact Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 (FGF23), 25OHD, Parathormone, and other biochemical markers. The 1,25(OH)2D measurement was performed using liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). Results: 70 PHPT patients and 75 CTRL were included, and 55 PHPT and 64 CTRL completed the 12-week protocol. After the intervention, there were significant increases in the FGF23 levels (PHPT: 47.9 ± 27.1 to 76.3 ± 33.3; CTRL: 40.5 ± 13.9 to 59.8 ± 19.8 pg/mL, p < 0.001), and significant decreases in 1,25(OH)2D levels (PHPT: 94.8 ± 34.6 to 68.9 ± 25.3; CTRL: 68.7 ± 23.5 to 56.4 ± 20.7 pg/mL, p < 0.001). The reduction of 1,25(OH)2D was inversely associated with the increase of FGF23 in both the PHPT (r = −0.302, p = 0.028) and CTRL (r = −0.278, p = 0.027). No changes in plasmatic or uninary calcium concentrations were observed in both groups. Conclusion: The weekly administration of 14,000 IU of Vitamin D3 was safe and efficient to increase in 25OHD levels in both groups. However, a paradoxical decrease in 1,25(OH)2D levels measured by LC–MS/MS was associated with a significant increase in FGF23 levels in both groups. This phenomenon might represent a defense against hypercalcemia after vitamin D supplementation and paves the way for new studies in this regard.

Cancer of the biliary (gallbladder) system is usually diagnosed only when it has reached an advanced stage, and usually results in an early death. Radical surgery has not improved the prognosis of patients with invasive gallbladder cancer. A report is presented of the outcome of 29 patients with advanced cancer of the biliary tract who underwent combined portal vein (source of blood for the liver) and liver resection. This procedure involved excision of a portion of the portal vein and removal of a portion of the liver; the amount of excision was determined by extent of the cancer. The average patient age was 60; 16 patients had cancer of the bile ducts, and 13 had gallbladder cancer. Five patients died within a month of surgery, yielding a 17 percent mortality rate. The average survival for the 24 who were discharged from the hospital was 19.8 months. Actuarial survival has been determined to be 48 percent at one year; 29 percent at three years; and 6 percent at five years. This compared favorably with the survival rates obtained using this surgical procedure, and the difference in survival was statistically significant. These findings suggest that combined portal vein and liver resection is a reasonable approach in patients with advanced cancer of the biliary tract. Intravenous sedation is useful for dental treatment in patients with intellectual disabilities. However, it is often necessary to manage such patients with deep sedation because their cooperation cannot be obtained. During deep sedation, undetected hypoventilation can lead to severe complications, such as hypoxia. Recently, capnographic monitoring has been advocated as a useful technique for preventing hypoxia during sedation. This randomized control trial evaluated whether the use of capnography reduces the incidence of hypoxia during the deep sedation of patients for dental treatment. This study involved patients with intellectual disabilities who underwent dental treatment under sedation. The subjects were randomized to the intervention group (I-group) or control group (C-group). All of the patients underwent routine monitoring, as well as bispectral index (BIS) and capnographic monitoring; however, only an independent observer had access to the patients’ capnographic data during the dental procedures. Sedation was maintained at a BIS of 50 to 70 by administration of propofol. In the I-group, the independent observer signaled to the dental anesthesiologist if the capnogram indicated that the patient had been suffering from alveolar hypoventilation or apnea for >15 s. In the C-group, the observer signaled to the dental anesthesiologist if the capnogram indicated that the patient had been suffering from alveolar hypoventilation or apnea for >60 s. In both groups, the dental anesthesiologists responded to the signals using appropriate airway management strategies. The primary endpoint of this study was the incidence of hypoxia during dental treatment, which was defined as oxygen saturation of <95%. Hypoxemic episodes occurred in 13.4% and 34.8% of cases in the I-group and C-group, respectively. The incidence of hypoxia was significantly lower in the I-group. These results suggest that capnographic monitoring during deep sedation for dental treatment prevents hypoxemic episodes by allowing the early detection of hypoventilation.Knowledge Transfer Statement:This is the first randomized controlled trial to examine whether the use of capnography reduces the incidence of hypoxia during deep sedation for dental treatment. The findings of this study can be used by clinicians to aid decision-making regarding dental sedation standards at individual clinics. Moreover, they can be used as high-level evidence during the production or updating of clinical guidelines for dental sedation by leading associations.

Surgical endarterectomy is the preferred method for treating occlusive disease of the common femoral artery (CFA). However, endarterectomy is not always straightforward in cases with heavily calcified plaque. To overcome this limitation, a new method for decalcification, which utilizes a Cavitron ultrasonic surgical aspirator (CUSA) has been developed.

Regular exercise improves aging-induced deterioration of arterial stiffness, and is associated with elevated production of pentraxin 3 (PTX3) and anti-inflammatory as well as anti-atherosclerotic effects. However, the time-dependent effect of exercise training on arterial stiffness and PTX3 production remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the time course of the association between the effects of training on the circulating PTX3 level and arterial stiffness in middle-aged and older adults. Thirty-two healthy Japanese subjects (66.2±1.3 year) were randomly divided into two groups: training (exercise intervention) and sedentary controls. Subjects in the training group completed 8 weeks of aerobic exercise training (60–70% peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) for 45 min, 3 days per week); during the training period, we evaluated plasma PTX3 concentration and carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) every 2 wk. cfPWV gradually declined over the 8-week training period, and was significantly reduced after 6 and 8 week of exercise intervention (P<0.05). Plasma PTX3 level was significantly increased after 4 weeks of the intervention (P<0.05). In addition, the exercise training–induced reduction in cfPWV was negatively correlated with the percent change in plasma PTX3 level after 6 week (r=−0.54, P<0.05) and 8 weeks (r=−0.51, P<0.05) of the intervention, but not correlated at 4 weeks. Plasma PTX3 level was elevated at the early stage of the exercise training intervention, and was subsequently associated with training-induced alteration of arterial stiffness in middle-aged and older adults.

Recently, a genome-wide screening identified a functional single-nucleotide polymorphism in dual-specificity phosphatase 14 gene (DUSP14), which was associated with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) in a West African study. DUSP14 regulates T-cell proliferation and cytokine production in a negative way via dephosphorylation and inactivation of key signaling molecules. The aim of this study is to further explore the possible significance of the DUSP14polymorphism. Total RNA was extracted from the whole blood of 109 healthcare workers (HCWs) in Vietnam and subjected to quantitative reverse-transcription PCR for DUSP14and 20 immune-related genes. DUSP14rs1051838 was genotyped in 502 new pulmonary TB patients and 506 healthy controls. Among disease-free individuals (HCWs), T-helper type-1 (Th1)-related genes, interferon-gamma receptor 2 (IFNGR2) and signal transducer and activator of transcription-1 (STAT1) mRNA levels significantly increased as the number of A alleles of rs1051838 increased, whereas the DUSP14mRNA level tended to decrease. The AA genotype was associated with protection against active TB in younger patients (?45 years old, OR=0.63, 95% CI 0.44–0.90). Our results suggest that a low-expression genotype of DUSP14accompanied by high transcript levels of Th1 immune-related genes may confer protection against early TB development.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effects of ezetimibe, an inhibitor of intestinal cholesterol absorption, on early phase diabetic nephropathy. METHODS: A total of 32 hypercholesterolaemic type 2 diabetes patients with microalbuminuria, defined as a urinary albumin excretion (UAE) ≥ 30 but < 300 mg/g creatinine, were enrolled. Various clinical and laboratory parameters were determined at baseline and after 6 months of treatment with 10 mg/day ezetimibe. RESULTS: Ezetimibe treatment significantly decreased glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), triglycerides and UAE, and significantly increased high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol and albumin. It also decreased the serum level of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), but this difference was not statistically significant. Univariate analyses showed a correlation between UAE and body mass index, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, HbA1c, LDL-C, estimated glomerular filtration rate (inverse), creatinine and MCP-1. Since these parameters may be closely correlated with each other, multiple stepwise regression analysis was performed and demonstrated that HbA1cand MCP-1 were independent determinants of UAE. CONCLUSIONS: Ezetimibe may be a promising therapeutic strategy for improving albumin excretion, partly through its anti-inflammatory properties, and for reducing LDL-C in hypercholesterolaemic type 2 diabetes patients with microalbuminuria.

A liquid‐fluidized bed of inert particles was used to separate a pure object from a mixture. One (binary solid‐liquid‐fluidized bed) or two (tertiary solid‐liquid‐fluidized bed) types of objects with relatively large‐sized particles were immersed in an inert‐particle bed, and the bed behavior was observed for different liquid velocities. The void fraction and apparent density of the inert‐particle suspension were predicted by considering the effect of the change in object position for different liquid velocities. The prediction method, which considers the change in the minimum fluidization velocity, accurately expressed the changes in the void fraction and the apparent density of the bed with the position of the objects in the bed. Using this method, the liquid velocity required to separate a certain kind of object from a mixture can be predicted.

Intracellular accumulation of filamentous tau proteins is a defining feature of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimers disease, progressive supranuclear palsy, corticobasal degeneration, Picks disease, and frontotemporal dementia with Parkinsonism linked to chromosome 17, all known collectively as tauopathies. Tau protein is a member of microtubule (MT)-associated proteins. Tau is a highly soluble and natively unfolded protein dominated by a random coil structure in solution. It is believed that aberrant modifications of tau, including phosphorylation, truncation, and conformational changes, induce filamentous aggregation. However, the mechanism underlying the conversion of tau protein from a soluble state to one of insoluble aggregates still remains elusive. The importance of tau aggregation intermediates (e.g. tau dimer, tau multimer, and granular tau oligomer) in disease pathogenesis was suggested by recent studies. Here, we review the latest developments in tracking the structural changes of tau protein and discuss the utility improving our understanding of tau aggregation pathway leading to human tauopathies.

Viscous flow behavior in supercooled liquid region of as-cast and pre-annealed Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5 bulk metallic glasses has been examined by using a penetration viscometer under high-speed heating rate of 20, 200 and 400 °C/min. Applied load for the cylindrical-shaped penetration indenter with a diameter of 1 mm was varied from 0.049 N to 0.294 N. Viscosity was quite independent of these applied loads. By pre-annealing the bulk metallic glasses at 400 °C, the density of the glasses increased, while the viscosity and the activation energy for viscous flow in their soopercooled liquid decreased with the pre-annealing treatments. Corresponding measurements of the differential thermal calorimetry (DSC) have been also done.

Viscosity of a Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5 supercooled liquid alloy having bulk metallic glass forming ability has been measured by using a penetration viscometer with a cylindrical probe under high speed heating conditions at rates between 20℃/min and 400℃/min in the temperature range from the glass transition temperatures (Tg) up to above the crystallization temperatures (Tx). The viscosity of the alloy decreased with increasing the heating rate and tended to saturate at the heating rate of 200℃/min and above. Corresponding measurements of the differential thermal calorimetry (DSC) under the high-speed heating conditions have been also done.

An interdisciplinary approach was used to treat a patient with pathologic migration of teeth, with severe anterior proclination and molar mesial inclination due to localized aggressive periodontitis. The combination of regenerative periodontal therapy, prosthodontic rehabilitation, and orthodontic treatment greatly improved function and esthetics.

This study investigates whether the proliferative activity of giant cell tumour of tendon sheath is related to its recurrence rate and local aggressiveness. The clinicopathological and immunohistochemical features of 30 localized giant cell tumours of tendon sheath were studied and the influence of the MIB-1 staining index on recurrence, tumour extent around the phalanx and involvement of the bone were evaluated. No significant difference in the MIB-1 staining index was found between the lesions which recurred and those which did not. Also there was no significant association between local aggressiveness and the MIB-1 staining index. These results suggest that the proliferative activity of localized giant cell tumour of tendon sheath is not related to its high recurrence rate and local aggressiveness.

The chain mobility of pectin, an anionic polysaccharide containing a carboxyl group in each of its monosaccharide units, in aqueous solutions has been examined by the fluorescence depolarization method. Carboxyl groups of pectin were covalently labeled in part with anthryl groups as the fluorescent probe, and the rotational relaxation time of the probe was estimated as the measure of the mobility of the pectin chain. The activation energy could be estimated from the temperature dependence of the relaxation time and was found to be 1.5 kcal/mol, suggesting the stiff nature of this anionic polysaccharide chain. It is noteworthy that the addition of NaCl to aqueous solutions of up to 1 M does not affect the chain mobility of pectin. The pH dependence of the chain mobility for pectin is clearly different from that for gellan, an anionic polysaccharide containing a carboxyl group in four monosaccharide units. It is proposed that the intramolecular electrostatic repulsions of anionic polysaccharides have two opposing effects with respect to chain mobility:  the long-range effect, which increases the degree of chain expansion, enhances the chain motion, and the short-range effect, which acts as the steric hindrance for the conformational transition, decreases the chain mobility.

Strongly ionized amphiphilic diblock copolymers of poly(styrene)-b-poly(styrenesulfonate) with various hydrophilic and hydrophobic chain lengths were synthesized by living radical polymerization, and their properties and self-assembling behavior were systematically investigated by surface tension measurement, foam formation, hydrophobic dye solubilization, X-ray reflectivity, dynamic light scattering, small-angle neutron scattering, small-angle X-ray scattering, and atomic force microscope techniques. These copolymer solutions in pure water did not show a decrease of surface tension with increasing polymer concentration. The solutions also did not show foam formation, and no adsorption at the air/water interface was confirmed by reflectivity experiments. However, in 0.5 M NaCl aq solutions polymer adsorption and foam formation were observed. The critical micelle concentration (cmc) was observed by the dye solubilization experiment in both the solutions with and without added salt, and by dynamic light scattering we confirmed the existence of polymer micelles in solution, even though there was no adsorption of polymer molecules at the water surface in the solution without salt. By the small-angle scattering technique, we confirmed that the micelles have a well-defined core−shell structure and their sizes were 100−150 Å depending on the hydrophobic and hydrophilic chain length ratio. The micelle size and shape were unaffected by addition of up to 0.5 M salt. The absence of polymer adsorption at the water surface with micelle formation in a bulk solution, which is now known as a universal characteristic for strongly ionized amphiphilic block copolymers, was attributed to the image charge effect at the air/water interface due to the many charges on the hydrophilic segment.

Crystal structures of (R)- and (rac)-4-phenyl-1,3-oxazolidin-2-one (4-POO) have been determined by X-ray diffraction and characterized by the solid state ¹³C NMR and IR spectra. Molecular geometries and intermolecular interactions in (R)- and (rac)-4-POO crystals are very similar to each other; 4-POO molecules are linked via the N-H…O intermolecular hydrogen bonds to form the chained structure. Chemical shifts of the solid state ¹³C NMR spectra are very similar to each other, whereas the ¹H spin-lattice relaxation times (T1H) value for (R)-4-POO is five times as large as that for (rac)-4-POO, reflecting the more restricted mobility of the (R)-4-POO chain. Although both crystals contain an unique molecule in the asymmetric unit, a doublet feature is observed for the C=O stretching mode in the IR spectra of (R)- and (rac)-4-POO crystals. The frequency gap of the C=O bands are correlated with the strength of the dipole-dipole interactions between the neighboring C=O groups. © 2004 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

The efficacy of traction before an attempted closed reduction for patients with developmental dislocation of the hip remains controversial. We treated 55 children (62 dislocations of the hip) by preliminary, prolonged traction for a mean of eight weeks. All were followed up for at least two years in order to observe the development of any avascular changes within the femoral head. Of the 55 children, 27 (31 dislocations) were followed up until they were over six years of age. Fifty-seven of the 62 hips (92%) showed a successful closed reduction. Only one had radiological evidence of avascular necrosis of the femoral head. Of the 31 hips which were followed up to over six years of age, 15 (48%) showed residual subluxation. Our method of prolonged preliminary traction leads to a high rate of successful closed reduction, a low incidence of avascular necrosis and a reduced need for secondary operations.

Abstract The sex chromosome constitution of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, is ZW in the female and ZZ in the male. Very little molecular information is available about the Z chromosome in Lepidoptera, although the topic is interesting because of the absence of gene dosage compensation in this chromosome. We constructed a 320-kb BAC contig around the Bmkettin gene on the Z chromosome in Bombyx and determined its nucleotide sequence by the shotgun method. We found 13 novel protein-coding sequences in addition to Bmkettin. All the transposable elements detected in the region were truncated, and no LTR retrotransposons were found, in stark contrast to the situation on the W chromosome. In this 320-kb region, four genes for muscle proteins (Bmkettin, Bmtitin1, Bmtitin2, and Bmprojectin) are clustered, together with another gene (Bmmiple) on the Z chromosome in B. mori; their orthologs are also closely linked on chromosome 3 in Drosophila, suggesting a partial synteny. Real-time RT-PCR experiments demonstrated that transcripts of 13 genes of the 14 Z-linked genes found accumulated in larger amounts in males than in female moths, indicating the absence of gene dosage compensation. The implications of these findings for the evolution and function of the Z chromosome in Lepidoptera are discussed.

OBJECTIVE: A significant decrease in vitamin D receptor (VDR) and calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) protein expression has been demonstrated recently in parathyroid (PT) adenomas. In this study, we investigated the relationships between the proliferative activity of parathyroid glands (PTGs) and the expression of VDR as well as CaSR, and compared it with the clinical severity in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (1 degrees HPT). DESIGN: Seven patients with 1 degrees HPT were included in this study. Four patients with thyroid carcinoma served as controls. METHODS: Immunohistochemical staining was performed on serial sections of PTGs with specific antibodies against CaSR, VDR, and Ki67. Areas examined in each section were selected at random in relation to the gland size. The number of Ki67-positive cells was expressed as a labeling index (LI; positive cells per 1000 PT cells). The expression of CaSR and VDR was semi-quantitatively analyzed based on the intensity of staining. After averages of the scores from all areas were calculated, CaSR and VDR scores, and Ki67 LI were assigned to each gland for use in statistical analyses. RESULTS: In PT adenomas, scores of VDR and CaSR were markedly lower than in normal PTGs (P<0.01), while the proportion of Ki67-positive cells in PT adenomas was significantly higher than in normal PTGs (P<0.01). Single regression analyses revealed that Ki67 LI was positively correlated with serum levels of intact parathyroid hormone and Ca, and PTG weight (R=0.70, P<0.05, R=0.78, P<0.01 and R=0.84, P<0.05 respectively). Ki67 LI was negatively correlated with CaSR and VDR scores (R=-0.78, P<0.01 and R=-0.72, P<0.05 respectively). Moreover, there was a strong positive relationship between CaSR and VDR expression (R=0.95, P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Marked decreases in VDR and CaSR expression could, at least in part, be responsible for the high proliferation of PT cells and the pathological progression of 1 degree HPT.

Operation tests of a cavity designed for high purity mode operation of the submillimeter wave gyrotron FU VA has been carried out successfully. The observed emission patterns of several cavity modes appear very pure and are compared with calculated results. High purity mode operation has the advantage of making the conversion to Gaussian-like beams more efficient.

Abstract:  A fluorometric real-time polymerase chain-reaction (PCR)-hybridization system, the LightCycler was developed for the detection of Neisseria gonorrhoeae in clinical samples and the analysis of point mutations associated with quinolone resistance in the gyrA gene. This system allowed us to amplify the N. gonorrhoeae-specific gyrA gene from an amount of DNA corresponding to five genome copies per reaction. We were able to detect N. gonorrhoeae in either 55 control strains or 36 nonisolated clinical urethral swab specimens, and to analyze the presence of mutations in codons Ser-91 and Asp-95 of the gyrA gene within 1 h. The mutation status in the gyrA gene assessed by the LightCycler assay was completely in agreement with the results of our previous conventional sequencing analysis, and was associated with the susceptibility to ciprofloxacin.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although it is reported that Helicobacter pylori induces apoptosis on gastric epithelial cells, the mechanism remains unknown. Antiapoptotic effects generated by H pylori have not yet been evaluated. METHODS: (1) H pylori strains (type 1 wild, TN2-DeltacagE, TN2-DeltavacA) were cocultured with MKN45, TMK1, and HeLa cells, and cell viability and apoptosis were assessed by trypan blue exclusion and DNA laddering, respectively. (2) Activation of caspases-3, 7, and 8, cytochrome c release from the mitochondria, and Fas, Fas associated death domain protein (FADD), Bax, Bak, and Bcl-X expression were evaluated by immunoblot analysis. (3) To investigate whether nuclear factor kappa B (NFkappaB) activation induced by cag pathogenicity island (PAI) positive H pylori affects antiapoptosis, MKN45 cells stably expressing super-repressor Ikappabetaalpha were cocultured with H pylori, and cell viability and caspase activation were evaluated. NFkappaB regulated gene expression was also evaluated by ribonuclease protection assay. RESULTS: (1) Wild-type and DeltavacA mutant H pylori induced apoptosis more potently than the DeltacagE mutant. Inhibition of cell contact between H pylori and cancer cells and heat killing H pylori diminished cell death. (2) Caspases-3, 7, and 8 were activated time dependently by H pylori as well as by the agonist anti-Fas. Cytochrome c release from mitochondria was observed and was not inhibited by caspase-8 inhibitor. Although protein expression of Fas, FADD, Bax, Bak, and Bcl-X in the whole cell lysates was not changed by H pylori, Bax was decreased from mitochondria free cytosol suggesting that Bax was translocated into mitochondria. (3) Cell death and the activities of caspases-3 and 8 were promoted in MKN45 cells stably expressing super-repressor Ikappabetaalpha that inhibits NFkappaB activation. Antiapoptotic proteins c-IAP1 and c-IAP2 were upregulated by the wild-type strains. CONCLUSION: cag PAI positive H pylori is capable of inducing apoptotic effects mainly through the mitochondrial pathway. Antiapoptotic effects mediated by NFkappaB activation were also observed.

The study deals with the manufacture of multiple-focus micro Fresnel lenses by means of nonrotational diamond cutting tools mounted on a 5-axis control ultraprecision machining center with the positioning accuracy of 1 nm and the rotational one of 0.00001 degree. Multiple-focus micro Fresnel lens, consisting of several micro Fresnel lenses, is not rotationally symmetric, thus requiring the introduction of 5-axis control ultraprecision machining center. Two-focus and three-focus micro Fresnel lenses are designed and manufactured by controlling the movement of nonrotational diamond cutting edge along the designed microgrooves at the cutting speed of 40 mm/min. As a result, the nonrotational diamond cutting method allows multiple-focus micro Fresnel lenses to be manufactured accurately and neatly without any burr generation.

NF-kappaB is a critical regulator of genes involved in inflammation. Gastric epithelial cells and macrophages are considered the main sources of pro-inflammatory cytokines. We investigated NF-kappaB activation by Helicobacter pylori in MKN45 gastric epithelial cells and THP-1 monocytic cells. Although, cag pathogenicity island (PAI)-positive H. pylori (wild type) activated NF-kappaB in both cells, isogenic mutant of cagE (DeltacagE) activated it only in THP-1 cells. Supernatant from the wild type culture could activate NF-kappaB in THP-1 cells but not in MKN45 cells. High density cDNA array analysis revealed that mRNA expression of NF-kappaB-regulated genes such as interleukin (IL)-8, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFalpha), and IL-1beta was significantly up-regulated by the wild type in both cells, whereas it was up-regulated by DeltacagE only in THP-1 cells. Experiments using CD14-neutralizing antibody and IL-1 receptor-associated kinase (IRAK) assay showed that both wild type and DeltacagE H. pylori activated NF-kappaB through CD14 and IRAK in THP-1 cells but not in MKN45 cells. Macrophages from C3H/HeJ mice carrying point mutation in the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) gene showed decreased NF-kappaB activation and TNFalpha secretion compared with C3H/HeN mouse macrophage when treated with H. pylori. In conclusion, H. pylori-induced NF-kappaB activation in epithelial cells is dependent on cag PAI and contact but does not involve CD14 and IRAK, whereas in macrophage/monocytic cells it is independent of cag PAI or contact but involves CD14 and TLR4.

In this paper, the perceptual effects of vowel-to-vowel transitions determined by different temporal variations of model parameters which specify the shapes of the vocal tract area function are investigated. It is shown that, (a) the method of deformation of the vocal tract area function between two targets can be perceptually important and (b) conversely, within certain limits, the time course of parameters from one state to another, and the precise synchronization of two parameters is not important for the correct identification of a vowel series. These characteristics are necessary but not sufficient to prove the existence of a phonetic gesture percept.

To reduce the arsenic content of the leaves and branches of an edible brown alga, hijiki Hizikia fusiforme, the Japanese traditional washing and soaking process before cooking was shown to be effective: about 32 to 60% of the arsenic was removed from the alga at room temperature. Increasing the amount of water in which the hijiki was soaked did not affect arsenic removal. On the other hand, arsenic content decreased linearly as the temperature used to wash and soak hijiki increased from 0 to 60 °C. The solubilities of azobenzene, p-hydroxyazobenzene, and p-dimethylaminoazobenzene which were suitable for dyeing from supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) were measured at 308.2 K and 318.2 K over the pressure range from 9.1 MPa to 25.3 MPa by a flow type apparatus. The solubilities were determined from the mass of solute trapped by decompression and the volume of released CO2. Solubility data were correlated by a solution model based on the regular solution concept.

Nucleic acid amplification was performed for five loci in the cag pathogenicity island (PAI) of Helicobacter pylori (comprising cagA, the cagA promoter region, cagE, cagT, and the left end of cagII [LEC]), and gastric inflammation in patients was evaluated. Of 204 H. pylori isolates from Japanese patients (53 with peptic ulcer, 55 with gastric cancer, and 96 with chronic gastritis), 197 (96.6%) were positive for all five loci. Two isolates (1%) were negative for all five loci, and five isolates (2.4%) were positive for only cagA and LEC. These latter seven isolates were all from patients with mild chronic gastritis. Neutrophil infiltration in gastric mucosa was significantly milder in patients infected with partially or totally deleted-PAI strains than in those with intact-PAI strains. The cagE gene was a more accurate marker of an intact cag PAI than the cagA gene, and cagE seemed to be more useful in discriminating between H. pylori strains causing different rates of disease progression.
