The bloom of harmful algae in water has adversely affected water quality, local economies, and human health. Efficient visible light driven floating photocatalysts, namely N,P co-doped TiO2/expanded graphite carbon layer (NPT-EGC) composites, were successfully synthesized using a sol-carbonization method, and then applied as algaecides. The synthesized photocatalysts were characterized by means of XRD, FESEM/EDS, TEM, FTIR spectroscopy, XPS, UV-vis DRS, and PL spectroscopy. The results show that the NPT-EGC composites have a worm-like structure with the N,P co-doped TiO2particles immobilized on the surface. Among the NPT-EGC photocatalysts with different calcination temperatures, NPT-EGC450 exhibits the highest photocatalytic activity. The removal rate of the algal cells is 98.15% for NPT-EGC450 following 9 h of visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic destruction process can be divided into a rapid adsorption phase and a repeat of the cell reduction phase-lag phase. During the photocatalytic process, the algal cells were damaged as a result of photocatalysis induced oxidation and inhibition. In addition, we simulated the release of MC-LR in the photocatalytic destruction process for the algal cells. The results show that the photocatalyst can remove both the algal cells and MC-LR simultaneously with high efficiency. After three consecutive cycles, the removal rate of the algal cells is still more than 90% for NPT-EGC450, which demonstrates that the NPT-EGC photocatalyst has good reusability and stability.

Quarkonium measurements in heavy-ion collisions play an essential role in understanding the hot, dense medium created in such collisions. As a reference, their production mechanism in p + p collisions needs to be thoroughly understood. Cell‐free protein synthesis systems have offered several advantages over traditional cell‐based expression methods. In this study, the effects of extract preparation and an energy‐regenerating system on protein synthesis were investigated in an Escherichia colicell‐free system. The results indicated that the expression level of enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP) with the S12 extract was higher than that with the S30 extract. Among four adenosine triphosphate‐regenerating sources, the cAMP/CP/CK system (including cAMP, creatine phosphate, and creatine kinase) proved to be the most efficient one to support high‐level expression of eGFP. Further studies showed that this established cell‐free system could be successfully used to produce one model protein (eGFP), two human proteins (AK2 and coenzyme synthase) and two membrane proteins (subunit b of F1F0adenosine triphosphate synthase and aquaporin Z). This outcome will be helpful to develop the highly efficient cell‐free technology for the production of various proteins with different bio‐origins.

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of cooling rates (0.19, 1.27, 1.74 and 2.88°C/min) on the flavor of cooked rice during storage. The results obtained from flash gas chromatography electronic nose and sensory analysis showed that higher cooling rates prolonged rice fragrance retention, whereas faster deterioration of flavor acceptability of cooked rice was observed at lower cooling rates during storage. The contribution of 43 flavor compounds in cooked rice was validated in three parallel tests by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry combined with principal component analysis, which indicated that 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline and alcohols contributed to the fragrance, while aliphatic aldehydes (at high concentration), benzene derivatives, and acids were responsible for flavor deterioration. Partial least squares regression further identified that eight flavor compounds [(E,E)-2,4-decadienal, 2-butyl-2-octenal, 1-hexanol, 2-propyl-1-pentanol, 2-butyl-furan, geranylacetone, 2-acetylthiazole, and 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline] had significantly positive contributions to sensory evaluations, while nine flavor compounds [hexanal, octanal, (E)-2-octenal, decanal, (E)-5-methyl-4-hepten-3-one, n-hexadecanoic acid, ethylbenzene, o-xylene and p-xylene] had significantly negative contributions to sensory evaluations during storage (p < 0.05). The water migration and/or starch crystallization of cooked rice during storage affected by cooling rates were supposed to affect the release of the flavor compounds. These findings could provide a reference for the flavor preservation of instant rice.
