Abstract

A study conducted by the University of Amsterdam explores the impact of witnessing moral acts on the dehumanization of ethnic outgroups. The researchers theorized that pro-social emotions, such as moral elevation, could help reduce this bias. Through two experiments involving a total of 714 participants, the study found that moral elevation significantly reduced dehumanization of outgroup members, while positive affect alone did not have the same effect. The researchers concluded that witnessing moral acts can help individuals recognize the humanity of others.
