It is reported that the title compound (III) can be characterized in three stable oxidation states: the reduced, COA (leuco, B7) (III), the fully oxidized (tetraquinone imine, "TQI", B3Q4, old nomenclature: "pernigraniline"), and the intermediate oxidation state, B5Q2 ("emeraldine") (B: benzenoid, Q: quinonoid phenyl group within the brackets of (III)).

The decomposition of p‐cyano‐N,N‐dimethylaniline N‐oxide catalyzed by the title complex (I) in the absence of added reagents in CH2Cl2at 25 °C in general gives the same decomposition products as known from the reaction with tetraphenylporphyrinatoiron(III) chloride.

The Baldwin metalloporphyrin (III) mediates the reaction between 4‐cyano‐dimethylaniline N‐oxide (I) and tetramethylethylene (II), yielding the epoxide (V), the amine (IV), and the tetrahydroquinoline (VI).

Consecutive treatment of the alkyl dithioacetates (I) with sodium hydride, carbon disulfide (II), and iodine leads to the formation of the 5‐(alkylthio)‐1,2‐dithiole‐3‐thiones (III).
