John Vernon Lord is an author, illustrator and teacher. He began his career in freelance illustration in the early 1960s and has carried out commissions for books, magazines and advertising. His books include a number of editions for the Folio Society. As a university professor, Lord has lectured for over sixty years in the United Kingdom and abroad. Here he presents a personal view of the historic and contemporary roles of the illustrator, particularly the book illustrator, examines the distinctions between fine art and illustration, and gives a passionate defence of illustration in the face of often dismissive attitudes, epitomized by the use of the term ‘mere illustration’.

In this article we examine the strikes (minimum service levels) bill from five perspectives: its purpose, its form, its content, its compatibility with international law and its implications. From each viewpoint, the bill is shown to be an extreme and unjustifiable attack on working people. The bill is also viewed in the context of government attacks on economic and political freedoms more widely.

This paper considers the background to the Industrial Relations Act 1971 and how the law attempted to weaken trade union structures, collective bargaining and the right to strike. The purpose was to diminish workers’ wage share and transfer wealth to the rich. The imprisonment of the dockers in 1972 under the act, released after the threat of a general strike, is dealt with. The paper considers this to be a turning point in the strength of the organised working class after resort again to a neoliberal industrial relations legal regime established under the Thatcher government from 1979 onwards has relentlessly driven down wage share, equality, security and the prosperity of the working class. A few positive thoughts are offered for the future.

Robert May was the leading theoretical ecologist of his generation. He started his career as a theoretical physicist and began the transition to ecology soon after completing a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard. His mathematical analysis of the stability of ecological communities challenged orthodox views and spawned a new research agenda. He demonstrated that many different patterns of population fluctuations, including chaotic behaviour, could arise from simple mathematical models. Together with R. M. Anderson, he transformed the mathematical modelling of infectious diseases. All of his work was characterized by his remarkable ability to reduce complex problems to their essential simplicities. His achievements were recognized by the award of numerous major international prizes. May also served as the UK government's chief scientific advisor between 1995 and 2000, and as President of the Royal Society between 2000 and 2005.

Experiences of belonging are associated with positive wellbeing. Unfortunately, many individuals in our communities do not experience belonging and are prone to isolation and loneliness. In this paper, we describe five themes that highlight ways to help enhance belonging, particularly for individuals susceptible to exclusion. These themes consist of community spaces that are open, inviting, and accessible; are welcoming; provide opportunities for participation and contribution; support social connections around a common interest; and establish and follow policies that create a culture of belonging. We discuss these themes specifically in relation to community leisure settings and explain that being intentional about inclusionary practices is an important and necessary commitment to enhancing a sense of belonging within these settings.

‘Speed breeding’ (SB) shortens the breeding cycle and accelerates crop research through rapid generation advancement. SB can be carried out in numerous ways, one of which involves extending the duration of plants’ daily exposure to light, combined with early seed harvest, to cycle quickly from seed to seed, thereby reducing the generation times for some long-day (LD) or day-neutral crops. In this protocol, we present glasshouse and growth chamber–based SB approaches with supporting data from experimentation with several crops. We describe the conditions that promote the rapid growth of bread wheat, durum wheat, barley, oat, various Brassicaspecies, chickpea, pea, grass pea, quinoa and Brachypodium distachyon. Points of flexibility within the protocols are highlighted, including how plant density can be increased to efficiently scale up plant numbers for single-seed descent (SSD). In addition, instructions are provided on how to perform SB on a small scale in a benchtop growth cabinet, enabling optimization of parameters at a low cost.

One year's tracking of 21 general-interest magazines for frequency and changes in food advertising claims indicates that food manufacturers continue to emphasize taste and quality claims, and have not joined a trend toward making health claims. Just over half (55.2%) of all claims are taste-oriented. Competitive positioning changes require continued monitoring of food producer use of health care claims. Although health care claims were not found to be widespread, other quality claims studied could arguably be added to the health-oriented claim category.

AbstractThis article is adapted from John Vernon Lord’s lecture for IBIS (Imaginative Book Illustration Society), given on 7 May 2014 at the Art Workers’ Guild, Queen Square, London. John Lord explains in detail the process by which he illustrated the Folio Society’s 2014 edition of Finnegans Wake; the first time the book had been illustrated with the complete text. Finnegans Wake by James Joyce is an important work of twentieth century Modernist literature. Although it is complex and difficult to summarize, the article provides an insight into Lord’s intensive study of the text over a number of years and presents his interpretation of the main themes of the book. This is set within the context of Lord’s view of the function and purpose of illustration more generally. The process of illustration of Finnegans Wake is then revealed in detail. The Folio Society edition illustrations are presented alongside detailed descriptions of the process and thinking behind each one. Further insight into the process of illustration of Finnegans Wake is provided by a selection of John Vernon Lord’s sketchbooks, at the end of the article, in which he is seen progressively working through the themes of the text, as he develops the illustrations.

Analysis of advertising in 21 general-reader magazines shows the reluctance of food advertisers to associate health claims with food products. Although the health claims rose from 1.43 percent in 1985 to 1.76 in 1987, nutrition claims jumped from 6.14 in 1985 to 10.19 percent in 1987. Claims for product quality declined from 7.18 percent in 1985 to 6.41 percent in 1986, but leaped to 14.97 percent in 1987. Other significant appeals were promotional activities, including coupons and sweepstakes, in 65 percent of all food advertisements in 1987. The trend is from single-claim toward multiple-claim consumer advertisements.

Cybercrime, and in particular fraud, is a booming business. Every week we are faced with another story of a business becoming the latest victim of cybercrime or shocking statistics about the rising levels of fraud. Just recently, PwC published a report that found that in the past two years, half of UK organisations have been the victim of an illegal act committed by an individual or a group to obtain a financial or professional advantage. 1 In fact, cybercrime, it was revealed, is the fastest-growing fraud, with a 20% increase since 2014, in comparison to some of the traditional forms of economic crime such as bribery, asset misappropriation and procurement fraud. Cybercrime and, in particular, fraud is a booming business and every week we are faced with another story of a business becoming the latest victim of crime. Everyone is a potential target and only by having the right procedures in place to minimise the risk and the consequences post-attack can we start to fight back. As a part of a larger study of change towards the values of an empowerment-community integration paradigm in community mental health, we examined changes in 3 mental health organizations in 1 community. Using qualitative methods, we focused on: (a) change pathways, (b) organizational change outcomes, and (c) the factors which helped and hindered change outcomes. We found evidence of a paradigm shift in the values and related practices within the organizations. Our results and themes are discussed and aimed at understanding and integrating knowledge about organizational change and the empowerment-community integration paradigm in community mental health.

This article describes a research study completed on the process of empowerment. Conducted with 55 men and women who had experienced extensive powerlessness in their lives, qualitative interviews and focus groups were designed to understand participants' lived experiences as they struggled toward increased control in their lives. Several themes were identified, including elements which provided an impetus for empowerment and the importance of support from people. As the empowerment process unfolded, access to valued resources and participation in community life reduced isolation and contributed to the competence and confidence of participants. Several implications for the concept of empowerment are identified such as self-efficacy and personal control; and principles for community practice are outlined. This study confirms the importance of understanding empowerment from an ecological perspective.

This paper reports on the findings of a qualitative study of supported employment. The purpose of the study was to trace the process whereby people with a developmental handicap entered supported employment and became employed in regular jobs, and to consider the quality of life of those individuals. The quality of life of all participants was considerably enhanced as a result of the supported employment experience. The study also identified several problem areas and strategies for improving supported employment, particularly with respect to providing unobtrusive support in the workplace and facilitating social integration of the employee.

This article describes the benefits of qualitative research in community needs assessment. The value of “going to the people” in order to understand the reality of consumers' lives is outlined. A recent qualitative study with individuals with chronic mental disabilities is used to illustrate the development of themes and patterns of needs. The themes include people's struggle for identity, need for support, and the dilemmas of hospitalization and lack of employment.

There is now widespread interest in developing social policies and practices that are grounded in principles of independent living. The Independent Living IL paradigm reflects a shift in thinking away from traditional approaches to supporting persons with disabilities. Independent Living Centres ILCs, which started in the early 1970s in the United States, and in the 1980s in Canada, are now a major force in the promotion of the IL concept worldwide. The guiding principles of these consumerdriven centres include promoting an empowerment philosophy that incorporates consumer controlselfdirection over decisionmaking offering crossdisability support providing optionschoice and flexibility and encouraging inclusion and full participation. Despite their prevalence, a surprisingly limited body of research exists on the impact of ILCs. A survey was used to investigate the impact of ILCs in Canada on their communities of interest groups connected to the ILCs. Surveys were sent to formal organizations, informal groups, and familyfriends. A final response rate of 52.6 was achieved 111 of 211 surveys returned. Overall, moderate to good levels of familiarity, involvement, and impact were found. The results affirmed the importance of independent living centres to individual empowerment, community change, and the IL movement.

In this paper, the mechanics of flatfoot and the rôle of the os calcis in its production were thoroughly set forth.It was then that I conceived the idea of the operative attack on the os calcis with displacement inward of its posterior portion in order to change the center of weight bearing sufficiently to correct the everted flatfoot. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) has become a significant acute and chronic respiratory pathogen. While vancomycin is effective against MRSA, its relatively poor penetration into lung secretions and dose-limiting renal toxicity make it less effective in the respiratory setting. As inhaled administration of vancomycin would overcome these limitations, we developed a dry powder formulation suitable for inhalation (AeroVanc).
