The physicochemical properties of engineered nanomaterials can change drastically during aging in the environment. Understanding how these changes influence protein corona formation on nanomaterials is critical for accurately predicting the human exposure risks of aged nanomaterials. Here, we show that sulfidation, a prevalently occurring environmental aging process, of Ag and ZnO nanomaterials significantly affected the protein compositions of the hard corona formed in human saliva, sweat, and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, corresponding to three most common exposure pathways, that is, ingestion, dermal contact, and inhalation. In particular, a diverse variety of proteins selectively associated with either sulfidized or pristine nanomaterials. Random forest classification of the proteomic data revealed that this selective protein adsorption process was mainly dictated by electrostatic interaction, hydrophobic interaction, and steric hindrance between proteins and nanomaterials, which were susceptible to the changes in surface charge, hydrophobicity, and aggregation status of nanomaterials induced by sulfidation. Furthermore, even for the proteins that do not exhibit distinct adsorption selectivity between sulfidized and pristine nanomaterials, sulfidation altered the extents of impact of nanomaterials on the conformation and likely functions of the adsorbed proteins. These findings unearth a previously neglected mechanism via which environmental sulfidation process mediates the biological effects of soft-metal-containing nanomaterials.

Our Moon is by far the easiest natural, extraterrestrial celestial object for us to reach, and many space agencies, in particular the China National Space Administration, have publicized plans for manned missions there. Such high-profile projects must yield commensurate scientific outputs to justify their cost to the taxpayers. An important criterion for the selection of candidate experiments is the extent to which the Moon plays an integral and irreplaceable role, as opposed to offering only marginal advantages over Earth-orbit, space-based alternatives. In this study, we propose an experiment that excels in this regard, which considers the Moon as part of the experimental apparatus. Specifically, the Moon acts as a Weber bar-style resonant mass that responds to deci-Hertz gravitational waves (GWs). GW-excited lunar vibrations can be picked up by an array of (prefabricated on Earth and easy to transport to the Moon) small laser interferometric seismometers yielding GW detection. Such a setup would plug a gap in the GW frequency range already covered by the existing or underdevelopment detectors, and it can inform us on important astrophysics topics, such as the progenitors of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) or intermediate mass black holes. We provide the instrument design as well as its deployment strategy, and we also summarize relevant science cases according to the estimated viable sensitivity.

The analysis of the protein corona on (reduced) graphene oxides demonstrated that these nanomaterials preferentially adsorbed high-molecular-weight proteins through hydrophobic interaction. The counterintuitive observation that more reduced, and thus more hydrophobic, graphene oxides had lower adsorption capacities was attributable to the surface-functionality-determined, more significant aggregation of the reduced materials.

OBJECTIVETo assess the prevalence of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) in mainland China.DESIGNSystematic review and meta-analysis.SETTINGAdults and children from secondary and tertiary acute-care hospitals in mainland China.METHODSWe searched PubMed, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wan Fang for multicenter point-prevalence surveys of acute-care hospitals in mainland China from January 2006 to August 2016. All reports related to HAI, using a point-prevalence methodology and published either in English or Chinese were eligible.RESULTSIn total, 3,021 publications were identified; 115 were eligible for quality assessment and data abstraction. The weighted HAI prevalence (95% confidence interval [CI]) overall, in general hospitals, children’s hospitals, maternal and child health hospitals, and oncology hospitals were 3.12% (95% CI, 2.94%–3.29%), 3.02% (95% CI, 2.79%–3.26%), 4.43% (95% CI, 3.39%–5.47%), 1.88% (95% CI, 1.47%–2.29%), and 3.96% (95% CI, 3.12%–4.79%), respectively. In general hospitals, prevalence was highest in adult intensive care units (26.07%; 95% CI, 23.03%–29.12%), followed by surgery (3.26%; 95% CI, 2.96%–3.57%), and internal medicine (3.06%; 95% CI, 2.67%–3.46%). Overall, lower respiratory tract infection was the most frequent HAI (24,185, 47.28%), followed by urinary tract infection (5,773, 11.29%) and upper respiratory tract infection (5,194, 10.15%). Gram-negative bacilli were the most frequently isolated pathogens, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa(3,395, 14.91%), and Escherichia coli(2,918, 12.82%) were the most common single microorganisms.CONCLUSIONSThis study is the largest systematic review on the prevalence of HAI in mainland China. These results provide a benchmark for future PPSs and a reference for infection prevention and control strategies in mainland China.Infect Control Hosp Epidemiol2018;39:701–709

We propose an ultracompact parallel label-free biosensor based on concentric silicon-on-insulator microring resonators. Our numerical studies show that the proposed biosensor offers higher sensitivity and a larger detection area than conventional single-ring-based sensors. We analyze the detection sensitivity of the DNA hybridization by immobilizing the probe on top of the double concentric ring resonators and in the ring-ring air gap. For a concentric double-ring system with an area of 27.646 μm^2, the bulk detection sensitivity is 683 nmRIU^−1. The sensitive uniformity of the system related to the optical field distribution is also studied.

Hydrogel-based flexible strain sensors have shown great potential in body movement tracking, early disease diagnosis, noninvasive treatment, electronic skins, and soft robotics. The good self-healing, biocompatible, sensitive and stretchable properties are the focus of hydrogel-based flexible strain sensors. Dual network (DN) hydrogels are hopeful to fabricate self-healing hydrogels with the above properties. Here, multifunctional DN hydrogels are prepared via a combination of host–guest interaction of β-cyclodextrin and ferrocene with dynamic borate ester bonds of poly(vinyl alcohol) and borax. Carbon nanotubes are used to endow the DN hydrogels with good conductivity. The obtained DN composite hydrogels possess good biocompatibility, stretchability (436%), fracture strength (41.0 KPa), self-healing property (healing efficiency of 95%), and high tensile strain sensitivity (gauge factor of 5.9). The DN composite hydrogels are used as flexible strain sensors to detect different human motions. After cutting, the healed hydrogels also can monitor human motions and have good stability. In addition, the hydrogel sensors may track the respiratory movement of a pig lung in vitro. This work exhibits new ideas and approaches to develop multifunctional self-healing hydrogels for constructing flexible strain sensors.

As one of the most promising fixators developed for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, biodegradable magnesium (Mg)-based interference screws have gained increasing attention attributed to their appropriate modulus and favorable biological properties during degradation after surgical insertion. However, its fast degradation and insufficient mechanical strength have also been recognized as one of the major causes to limit their further application clinically. This review focused on the following four parts. Firstly, the advantages of Mg or its alloys over their counterparts as orthopaedic implants in the fixation of tendon grafts in ACL reconstruction were discussed. Subsequently, the underlying mechanisms behind the contributions of Mg ions to the tendon-bone healing were introduced. Thirdly, the technical challenges of Mg-based interference screws towards clinical trials were discussed, which was followed by the introduction of currently used modification methods for gaining improved corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. Finally, novel strategies including development of Mg/Titanium (Ti) hybrid fixators and Mg-based screws with innovative structure for achieving clinically customized therapies were proposed. Collectively, the advancements in the basic and translational research on the Mg-based interference screws may lay the foundation for exploring a new era in the treatment of the tendon-bone insertion (TBI) and related disorders.

A scheme to achieve ultrahigh speed all-optical format conversion from on-off keying (OOK) to phase-shift keying (PSK) by using the linear filtering in the silicon ring resonators is proposed. It is shown that the OOK-to-PSK conversion can be achieved through a linear signal processing. Simulation results are provided for the 160-Gb/s non-return-to-zero (NRZ)-to-PSK and carrier-suppressed (CS) return-to-zero (RZ)-to-(CS)RZPSK conversions.
