- Abstract
Alkali metal anodes paired with solid ion conductors offer promising avenues for enhancing battery energy density and safety. To facilitate rapid ion transport crucial for fast charging and discharging of batteries, it is essential to understand the behavior of point defects in these conductors. In this study, we investigate the heterogeneity of defect distribution in two prototypical solid ion conductors, Li3OCl and Li2PO2N (LiPON), by quantifying the defect formation energy (DFE) as a function of distance from the surface and interface through first-principles simulations. To simulate defects at the electrode–electrolyte interface, we perform calculations of Li+vacancy in Li3OCl near its interface with lithium metal. Our results reveal a significant difference between the bulk and surface/interface DFE which could lead to defect aggregation/depletion near the surface/interface. Interestingly, while Li3OCl has a lower surface DFE than the bulk in most cases, LiPON follows the opposite trend with a higher surface DFE compared to the bulk. Due to this difference between bulk and surface DFE, the defect density can be up to 14 orders of magnitude higher at surfaces compared to the bulk. Further, we reveal that the DFE transition from surface/interface to bulk is precisely characterized by an exponentially decaying function. By incorporating this exponential trend, we develop a revised model for the average behavior of defects in solid ion conductors that offers a more accurate description of the influence of grain sizes. Surface effects dominate for grain sizes ≲1 μm, highlighting the importance of surface defect engineering and the DFE function for accurately capturing ion transport in devices. We further explore the kinetics of defect redistribution by calculating the migration barriers for defect movement between bulk and surfaces. We find a highly asymmetric energy landscape for the lithium vacancies, exhibiting lower migration barriers for movement toward the surface compared to the bulk, while interstitial defects exhibit comparable kinetics between surface and bulk regions. These insights highlight the importance of considering both thermodynamic and kinetic factors in designing solid ion conductors for improved ion transport at surfaces and interfaces.

- Abstract
ABSTRACTPurposeTo evaluate the responses of different optical coherence tomography (OCT) patterns of diabetic macular edema (DME) to intravitreal injection therapy.MethodsIn this retrospective, comparative, and multicenter study, patients who had previously untreated DME, who received intravitreal ranibizumab (IVR) or aflibercept (IVA) and/or steroid treatment with the pro re nata (PRN) treatment regimen after a 3-month loading dose, and had a 12-month follow-up in the MARMASIA Study Group were included. Morphological patterns of DME were divided into four groups based on OCT features diffuse/spongious edema (Group 1), cystoid edema (Group 2), diffuse/spongious edema+subretinal fluid (SRF) (Group 3), and cystoid edema+SRF (Group 4). Changes in central macular thickness (CMT) and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at months 3, 6, and 12, and the number of injections at month 12 were compared between the DME groups.Results455 eyes of 299 patients were included in the study. The mean baseline BCVAs [Logarithm of the Minimum Angle of Resolution (logMAR)] in groups 1, 2, 3, and 4 were 0.54 ± 0.24, 0.52 ± 0.25, 0.55 ± 0.23, and 0.57 ± 0.27, respectively. There was no significant difference between the baseline mean BCVAs between the groups (p = .35). The mean BCVAs were significantly improved to 0,47 ± 0,33 in group 1, 0,42 ± 0,33 in group 2, 0,47 ± 0,31 in group 3, and 0,45 ± 0,43 at month 12. There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of BCVA change at month 12 (p = .71). The mean baseline CMTs in groups 1, 2, 3, and 4 were 387,19 ± 128,19, 447,02 ± 132,39, 449,12 ± 109,24, and 544,19 ± 178,61, respectively. At baseline, the mean CMT was significantly higher in Group 4 than in the other groups (p = .000). The mean CMTs were significantly decreased to 325,16 ± 97,55, 334,94 ± 115,99, 324,33 ± 79,20, and 332,08 ± 150,40 in four groups at month 12 respectively (p > .05). The groups had no significant difference in mean CMT at month 12 (p = .835). The change in CMT was significantly higher in Group 4 than in the other groups at month 12 (p = .000). The mean number of intravitreal anti-VEGF injections at month 12 was 4.51 ± 1.57 in Group 1, 4.63 ± 1.54 in Group 2, 4.88 ± 1.38 in Group 3, and 5.07 ± 1.49 in Group 4. The mean number of anti-VEGF injections in Group 1 and Group 2 was significantly lower than in Group 4 (p = 0,014 and p = 0,017).ConclusionsIn real life, there was no significant difference between the DME groups in terms of visual improvement at month 12. However, better anatomical improvement was achieved in Group 4 than in the other DME groups.

- Abstract
AbstractThis study investigates the enhancement of enzymatic catalytic performance by immobilizing laccase on various nanostructured mesoporous silica materials (SBA-15, MCF, and MSU-F). The activity of immobilized laccase was evaluated under different hydrothermal, pH, and solvent conditions, with laccase@MSU-F showing a three-fold increase in stability. Laccase immobilized on these materials demonstrated stability in a pH range of 4.5 to 10.0, while free laccase was inactivated at pH higher than 7. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed that electrostatic interactions and protective confinement effects contribute to the improved stability of immobilized laccase. Overall, the findings suggest that nanomaterials can enhance the operational stability and recovery of enzymes.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma

AbstractCancer is an umbrella term used to define various diseases with abnormal cell proliferation at the focal point. According to the WHO, cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide, with lung cancer being the second most common perpetrator after breast cancer. There are several proteins acting in harmony that lead to cancer. EGFR has been identified as one of the proteins that is linked to cell division, even when it is cancerous in nature. Cancer can be treated using therapeutic agents that target EGFR or their signaling networks. Available drugs that could inhibit EGFR have acquired resistance in most cases and multiple side effects on the human body. That is why phytochemicals are being studied for their role in this case. Around 8000 compounds were retrieved from our previously created phytochemdb database for their drug activity, and the 3D protein structure was collected from the protein data bank. The selected dataset of ligands was virtually screened through HTVS, SP, and XP to retain the top 4 hits. Molecular dynamics revealed the stability and flexibility of protein-(selected)ligand interactions. The non-bond interactions of each of the compounds with EGFR, such as Gossypetin interacting with active site MET769 and ASP831; Muxiangrine III interacting with MET769 and ASP831; Quercetagetin showing non-bonded interactions with GLU738, GLN767, and MET769 for >100% of the simulation timeframe These findings suggest further research into these compounds, which can yield a potential phytochemical drug against cancer.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. - Abstract
Southeast Asia is projected to be the fourth largest economy in 2050, where agriculture and food are key sectors contributing to the regional’s GDP. However, ensuring food safety and traceability remains a challenge in the region and this offers ripe opportunity for fraudsters to take advantage of the system. This study aims to provide an overview of consumers’ concern about food fraud in selected countries in Southeast Asia. A cross-sectional online survey was implemented in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam, yielding 1393 valid responses. Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) was conducted first to reduce the large dataset containing nominal variables. After that, ordered logistic regression was performed to predict food fraud concern, with independent variables being dimensions derived from MCA, total knowledge and experience, and demographic characteristics. We found that respondents from Vietnam and Malaysia were significantly more worried about food fraud compared to other countries. Concerns about food fraud were influenced by increased demand for food fraud control, perceived risks of different types of food fraud, information sources from media and personal networks, information sources from credible organisations, and self-experience of food fraud. Practical and policy recommendations for the region were suggested. This is the first empirical study on consumers’ concern about food fraud in Southeast Asia. The study embodies the UK Global Food Security and UN Sustainable Development Goal No. 2 ethos of providing the growing global population with access to safe food.

- Abstract
In the realm of maritime transportation, autonomous vessel navigation in natural inland waterways faces persistent challenges due to unpredictable natural factors. Existing scheduling algorithms fall short in handling these uncertainties, compromising both safety and efficiency. Moreover, these algorithms are primarily designed for nonautonomous vessels, leading to labor-intensive operations vulnerable to human error. To address these issues, this study proposes a risk-aware motion control approach for vessels that accounts for the dynamic and uncertain nature of tide islands in a distributionally robust manner. Specifically, a model predictive control (MPC) method is employed to follow the reference trajectory in the time–space map while incorporating a risk constraint to prevent grounding accidents. To address uncertainties in tide islands, a novel modeling technique represents them as stochastic polytopes. Additionally, potential inaccuracies in waterway depth are addressed through a risk constraint that considers the worst case uncertainty distribution within a Wasserstein ambiguity set around the empirical distribution. Using sensor data collected in the Guadalquivir River, we empirically demonstrate the performance of the proposed method through simulations on a vessel. As a result, the vessel successfully navigates the waterway while avoiding grounding accidents, even with a limited dataset of observations. This stands in contrast to existing nonrobust controllers, highlighting the robustness and practical applicability of the proposed approach.

- Abstract
Sodium–glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors reduce progression of chronic kidney disease and the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in a wide range of patients. However, their effects on kidney disease progression in some patients with chronic kidney disease are unclear because few clinical kidney outcomes occurred among such patients in the completed trials. In particular, some guidelines stratify their level of recommendation about who should be treated with SGLT2 inhibitors based on diabetes status and albuminuria. We aimed to assess the effects of empagliflozin on progression of chronic kidney disease both overall and among specific types of participants in the EMPA-KIDNEY trial.

The EMPA-KIDNEY trial showed that empagliflozin reduced the risk of the primary composite outcome of kidney disease progression or cardiovascular death in patients with chronic kidney disease mainly through slowing progression. We aimed to assess how effects of empagliflozin might differ by primary kidney disease across its broad population.

16. Real-Time Implementation of Predictive Control in Power Inverters Based on Nearest Neighbor Searching

- Abstract
Model predictive control is a powerful methodology to control multilevel power inverters because of its ability to deal with multiple variables and control objectives but presents some difficulties, such as high computational burden and the fact that the control input is held constant during each sampling period. Multirate model predictive control was later proposed to alleviate the latter issue but would become even more complex to compute. This work proposes the implementation of multirate model predictive control using a novel adaptation of nearest neighbor searching to learn the control law. This effort made it possible for this control technique to be implemented in real time by taking advantage of hardware-accelerated parallelization. The method is tested on a five-level diode-clamped converter operating in inverter mode. The algorithm was implemented in a field-programmable-gate-array-in-the-loop experiment, and results show a significant reduction in total harmonic distortion, improving current ripples compared to predictive control that does not use the multirate technique.

18. Molecular dynamics and free energy calculations of clozapine bound to D2 and H1 receptors reveal a cardiometabolic mitigated derivative

- Abstract
AbstractMost atypical antipsychotics derive from a high dropout of drug treatments due to adverse cardiometabolic side effects. These side effects are caused, in part, by the H1 receptor blockade. The current work sought a clozapine derivative with a reduced affinity for the H1 receptor while maintaining its therapeutic effect linked to D2 receptor binding. Explicit molecular dynamics simulations and end-point free energy calculations of clozapine in complex with the D2 and H1 receptors embedded in cholesterol-rich lipid bilayers were performed to analyze the intermolecular interactions and address the relevance of clozapine-functional groups. Based on that, free energy perturbation calculations were performed to measure the change in free energy of clozapine structural modifications. Our results indicate the best clozapine derivative is the iodine atom substitution for chlorine. The latter is mainly due to electrostatic interaction loss for the H1 receptor, while the halogen orientation out of the D2 active site reduces the impact on the affinity.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. - Abstract
Inter-specific competition among species in a mixed species plantation is inevitable, and the degree of competition for available resources determines the success of species co-existence. Different species compete and interact for resources at different physiological and developmental stages. However, most research has investigated inter-specific competition at the mature stage. We examined seed germination and seedling growth of two confamilial species, Albizia samanand Albizia lebbeck, and explored inter-specific competition at their early life stages, grown in a mixture of different proportions of seeds and seedlings through a series of replacement experiment. The experiment included germination and height growth tests for each species on its own, as well as three mixtures of species with ratios of 25:75, 50:50 and 75:25. We found that the germination speed and percentage, the probability of seedling emergence, and the seedling height were significantly higher in A. samanthan in A. lebbeck. Moreover, in mixtures, we observed that A. samanexhibits higher germination speed and percentages compared to A. lebbeck. The increase in seedling height did not vary significantly among treatments when the seedlings of the studied species were mixed in different proportions. However, both species showed an apparent benefit when growing together, which was significantly influenced by A. samanin terms of inter-specific competition indexes. The knowledge of the early growth performance of these species and their inter-specific competition presented in this study may influence recruitment success and will be useful in understanding the population dynamics in the case of a mixed species plantation. Furthermore, our study suggests that there could be an impact of species mixture on the regeneration or recruitment process, even when the species are confamilial. Therefore, this information could be useful for selecting suitable species mixtures in any afforestation and reforestation activities.

20. Efficiently Solving the Harmonic Model Predictive Control Formulation

- Abstract
Harmonic model predictive control (HMPC) is a model predictive control (MPC) formulation that displays several benefits over other MPC formulations, especially when using a small prediction horizon. These benefits, however, come at the expense of an optimization problem that is no longer the typical quadratic programming problem derived from most linear MPC formulations due to the inclusion of a particular class of second-order cone constraints. This article presents a method for efficiently dealing with these constraints in operator splitting methods, leading to a computation time for solving HMPC in line with state-of-the-art solvers for linear MPC. We show how to apply this result to the alternating direction method of the multipliers algorithm, presenting a solver that we compare against other solvers from the literature, including solvers for other linear MPC formulations. The results show that the proposed solver, and by extension the HMPC formulation, is suitable for its implementation in embedded systems.

21. Safe Optimal Vessel Planning on Natural Inland Waterways

- Abstract
Despite inland ports play an essential role in today’s global logistics chain, many problems still remain unsolved. One of the main challenges that inland waterways face is the trip planning of cargo vessels. A correct trip planning does not only improve the efficiency and prestige of the port, but is also crucial to ensure the safety of operations. This issue is particularly critical in the case of natural waterways whose depth and width are conditioned by natural phenomena that, in principle, cannot be controlled. This is the case of the Guadalquivir river, a waterway that connects the Atlantic Ocean and the inland Port of Seville in the south of Spain. In this context, this work proposes a two-step solution to optimize the time needed for vessels to complete their journey through the waterway while considering the constraint imposed by the time-varying depth and encountering situations. The outcome is the set of times when vessels are required to cross a series of boundaries delimiting the different sections of the waterway. The advantages of the proposed approach are studied in contrast to a first-arrived first-served scheduling solution in terms of optimality and feasibility.

- Abstract
Purpose: This paper aims to identify the relationships among critical success factors (CSFs) for lean six sigma (LSS) implementation in higher education institutions (HEIs). Design/methodology/approach: An extensive literature review was conducted to design the survey instrument, which the authors later administered in Mexican public HEIs to identify the existing relationships among the CSFs and their impact on the benefits obtained from implementing LSS projects. The data were empirically and statistically validated using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Additionally, the authors applied the structural equation modeling (SEM) technique on SPSS Amos to validate the nine hypotheses supporting the research. Findings: The results suggest that the success of LSS projects in HEIs is highly bound to a serious commitment from top management and several interrelated factors. Research limitations/implications: The main limitations of the study are that the research is cross-sectional in nature and regional in focus. Namely, the data used to validate the structural model were gathered from a small representative subset of the study population – i.e. Mexican public HEIs – and at a specific point in time. Practical implications: The results reported here represent a reference framework for HEIs worldwide that wish to continuously improve their processes through LSS improvement projects. Originality/value: This study proposes a statistically validated model using the SEM technique that depicts the relationships among LSS CSFs in HEIs.

- Abstract
While the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact people globally, refugees comprise a vulnerable population, particularly those living in densely populated areas. In Bangladesh, Cox’s Bazar is currently home to almost a million Rohingya refugees. Because of the lack of healthcare, sanitation and water, as well as overcrowding, refugees were at high risk of becoming ill during the early phases of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Moreover, superstitions and lack of trust in the healthcare system threaten to put the community at further risk. To prevent tragic consequences, national and international attention and action are required to strengthen the health system for Rohingya refugees. The community will require surveillance and testing, infection prevention and control measures, adequate food supplies, and access to improved healthcare services. This paper calls for a multi-sectoral approach to developing an action plan and implementation strategy to minimize the impact of COVID-19 on this vulnerable population.

- Abstract
AbstractTBX3 is an ancient and evolutionarily conserved family member of T-box transcription factors that acts as a key regulator in embryonic development and organogenesis. It is often overexpressed in various epithelial and mesenchymal malignancies which has a significant impact on various hallmarks of cancer, which mainly includes senescence shunt, apoptosis, anoikis, angiogenesis, and promoting metastatic and expansion of cancer stem cells. In addition to the role of TBX3 in early breast development, a number of studies have also confirmed the amplification of TBX3 in the occurrence and development of breast cancer. To overcome a major challenge in breast cancer treatment, resistance to current anti-cancer drug, it is important to develop new drug pipeline. In this study of different alkaloid molecules, to identify potential alkaloid inhibitors of TBX3, a structure based virtual screening was done involving molecular docking, ADME, toxicity analysis, molecular dynamics simulation. From our study 5 ligands named Jervine, Diflomotecan, Camptothecin, Vincamine, and Anoniane were primarily confirmed as potential inhibitors. The followed screening manner funnels out five potential compounds that have a high scoring function that emphasizes their high binding ability along with no toxicity effects. The molecular mechanics-generalized born surface area (MM-GBSA) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation showed that Jervine along with Diflomotecan formed the stable complexes with TBX3 which makes it obvious that these two alkaloids can be introduced into the drug development pipeline and used as a new leader to develop new effective drugs against breast cancer.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. - Abstract
AbstractThe negative impact of infectious diseases like COVID-19 on public health and the global economy is evident. This pandemic represents a significant challenge for the scientific community to develop new practical analytical methods for accurately diagnosing emerging cases. Due to their selectivity and sensitivity, new methodologies based on antigen/antibody interactions to detect COVID-19 biomarkers are necessary. In this context, the theoretical, computational modeling reduces experimental efforts and saves resources for rational biosensor design. This study proposes using molecular dynamics to predict the interactions between the Receptor Binding Domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein simplified model and a set of highly characterized antibodies. The binding free energy of the antigen/antibody complexes was calculated for the simplified models and compared against the complete SARS-CoV-2 ectodomain to validate the methodology. The structural data derived from our molecular dynamics and end-point free energy calculations showed a positive correlation between both approximations, with a 0.82 Pearson correlation coefficient; t = 3.661, df = 3, p-value = 0.03522, with a 95% confident interval. Furthermore, we identified the interfacial residues that could generate covalent bonds with a specific chemical surface without perturbing the binding dynamics to develop highly sensitive and specific diagnostic devices. 29. Care Work and Mexican Motherhood
- Author

Limon, Lilia Adriana Perez
- Abstract
Abstract:In Mexican society there is the entrenched belief that care work is women's work. This article takes up this gendered assumption to examine the labor of care work as both a feminist aesthetic and as an obligation that is imposed on feminized subjects. It pursues this line of inquiry through two contemporary Mexican novels, Jazmina Barrera's 2020 memoir, Linea nigra, and Brenda Navarro's 2019 fiction novel, Casas vacías. Both novels offer distinct critiques of Mexican motherhood. Whereas Barrera problematizes normative maternity discourses in Linea nigra through reflections on her privileged motherhood experience, Navarro centers her narrative on the experience of non-desired maternity. By juxtaposing the novels' opposing understandings and experiences, this article illustrates how the women portrayed in the novels strive to reach an imposed ideal of motherhood, underpinned by the role of reproductive labor. Mutually, the authors' divergent takes on whether mothers' 'deserve' to be cared for while being pregnant and after giving birth, or if women are socially obligated to continue to care for others during this time. This indicates an ongoing debate within contemporary Mexican feminist letters about how to elaborate a feminist ethics of care which harbors the potential for social change.

30. Restart of Accelerated First-Order Methods With Linear Convergence Under a Quadratic Functional Growth Condition
- Author

- Abstract
Accelerated first-order methods, also called fast gradient methods, are popular optimization methods in the field of convex optimization. However, they are prone to suffer from oscillatory behavior that slows their convergence when medium to high accuracy is desired. In order to address this, restart schemes have been proposed in the literature, which seek to improve the practical convergence by suppressing the oscillatory behavior. This article presents a restart scheme for accelerated first-order methods, for which we show linear convergence under the satisfaction of a quadratic functional growth condition, thus encompassing a broad class of non-necessarily strongly convex optimization problems. Moreover, the worst-case convergence rate is comparable to the one obtained using an (generally nonimplementable) optimal fixed-rate restart strategy. We compare the proposed algorithm with other restart schemes by applying them to a model predictive control case study.

- Abstract
Despite the efforts made by the port community and the academia to develop Efficient strategies to mitigate the effect of unexpected events on the planning of vessels through natural waterways, most scheduling algorithms developed so far are not against these events unforseen events. These incidents may lead to nonoptimal operation or even to potentially dangerous situations. To tackle this issue, in this paper we propose a real-time monitoring architecture and a series of optimal rescheduling strategies to re-schedule vessels in real time when an unexpected incident is detected. The objective is to reduce the impact of the incident in the overall process while preserving safety. This is done by detecting deviations from the originally scheduled plans and taking the proper measures when incidents are detected, which will depend on the type of anomaly detected. The proposed methodology is applied to the case of the Guadalquivir river, a natural waterway located in the south of Spain.

32. Multirate Predictive Control for Diode Clamped Inverters with Data-Based Learning Implementation
- Author

Ordonez, Joaquin G., Limon, Daniel, and Gordillo, Francisco
- Abstract
Diode clamping is a widely used topology for power inverters due to the low number of components, low cost, and general efficiency of the circuit, but its main drawback is the difficulty in controlling a multilevel configuration. For that, finite-control-set model predictive control was chosen, as it is a multivariable optimal controller that takes into account constraints and deals with multiple objectives. However, it has high computational burden and its control solution is held constant during the sampling period if not using modulation. This work first proposes a multirate enhancement for this control technique to address the latter issue, and then uses a novel learning method to allow the online implementation and overcome the high computation time. This method is tested in simulation in a three-phase, five-level diode-clamped inverter. Comparisons and performance gains of the multirate technique are provided.

33. Kernel-Based State-Space Kriging for Predictive Control

- Abstract
In this paper, we extend the state-space kriging (SSK) modeling technique presented in a previous work by the authors in order to consider non-autonomous systems. SSK is a data-driven method that computes predictions as linear combinations of past outputs. To model the nonlinear dynamics of the system, we propose the kernel-based state-space kriging (K-SSK), a new version of the SSK where kernel functions are used instead of resorting to considerations about the locality of the data. Also, a Kalman filter can be used to improve the predictions at each time step in the case of noisy measurements. A constrained tracking nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) scheme using the black-box input-output model obtained by means of the K-SSK prediction method is proposed. Finally, a simulation example and a real experiment are provided in order to assess the performance of the proposed controller.

- Abstract
One of the main problems associated with advanced control strategies is their implementation on embedded and industrial platforms, especially when the target application requires real-time operation. Frequently, the dynamics of the system are totally or partially unknown, and data-driven methods are needed to learn an approximate model of the plant to control. On many occasions, these learning techniques use non-differentiable functions that cannot be handled by most traditional low-level gradient-based optimization methods. In addition, many data-driven techniques require the online processing of a vast amount of data, which may be exceedingly time-consuming for most real-time applications. To solve these two problems at once, we propose a low-cost solution based on a system on a chip (SoC) platform featuring an embedded microprocessor (MP) and a field programmable gate array (FPGA) to implement nonlinear model predictive control strategies. The model employed to make predictions about the future evolution of the system is learnt by means of a data-driven learning method know as parallel Lipschitz interpolation (LI) and implemented in the FPGA part. On the other hand, the optimization problem associated with the model predictive control strategy is solved by software in the MP using an adapted version of the particle swarm optimization method.

- Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the add-on effect of simultaneous intravitreal dexamethasone implant to bevacizumab for treatment of neovascular serous retinal pigment epithelial detachment (PED) secondary to neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD).Methods: A 72-year-old male patient was previously treated with intravitreal bevacizumab and aflibercept for neovascular serous PED secondary to nAMD. Because of the recurrences in neovascular PED patient was treated with simultaneous intravitreal injection of bevacizumab and dexamethasone implant. Results: At the initial visit, the patient’s the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in the left eye was 20/800. His left eye had neovascular serous PED with a height of 1100 µm and a largest linear diameter of 3953 µm accompanied by subretinal fluid. He received four intravitreal bevacizumab and five intravitreal aflibercept injections. Although there was a decrease in PED sizes from time to time during the 16-month treatment period, PED height was 926 µm and PED greatest linear diameter was 5820 µm at the end of 16th month. Later, the patient could not have an injection for 3 months (he could not come to his controls during the pandemic period), and when he arrived 3 months later, the PED height was 910 µm and the greatest linear diameter was 5830 µm. With a single simultaneous intravitreal injection of bevacizumab and dexamethasone implant, the PED regressed to 168 µm in height after 3 months. The BCVA increased to 20/200. Any clinical toxic effects did not occur and intraocular pressure did not rise for 3 months after injection. Conclusion: Simultaneous intravitreal bevacizumab and dexamethasone implant injection effectively and safely treated treatment-resistant neovascular serous PED. This therapy may be a novel alternative therapy for treatment resistant neovascular serous PED secondary to nAMD. However, further studies are required to understand its effectiveness and safety.

Purpose To evaluate the serum fibrinogen/albumin ratios in patients with acute and chronic central serous chorioretinopathy, and healthy control samples. Methods Serum fibrinogen/albumin ratios were assessed in patients with acute (Group-1, 30 eyes) and chronic (Group-2, 30 eyes) central serous chorioretinopathy, and compared with healthy control (Group-3, 30 eyes) samples. Results Fibrinogen/albumin ratios were significantly higher in Group-1 (104.72 ± 12.34) than in Group-2 (75.83 ± 10.06) and in Group-3 (72 ± 9.54) (p= 0.001). No significant correlation was found between age, CMT, and BCVA with fibrinogen/albumin ratios in the Pearson correlation analysis. In the ROC curve analysis, the most appropriate cut-off value of the fibrinogen/albumin ratio for acute CSCR was ≥87.8 and the optimal cut-off value for the fibrinogen/albumin ratio for chronic CSCR was ≥68.6.Conclusion The fibrinogen/albumin ratio may be useful as an inflammatory biomarker to monitor the systemic inflammatory state during the treatment and follow-up in patients with acute CSCR.

49. Integration of Molecular Docking Analysis and Molecular Dynamics Simulations for Studying Food Proteins and Bioactive Peptides

- Abstract
In silicotools, such as molecular docking, are widely applied to study interactions and binding affinity of biological activity of proteins and peptides. However, restricted sampling of both ligand and receptor conformations and use of approximated scoring functions can produce results that do not correlate with actual experimental binding affinities. Molecular dynamics simulations (MDS) can provide valuable information in deciphering functional mechanisms of proteins/peptides and other biomolecules, overcoming the rigid sampling limitations in docking analysis. This review will discuss the information related to the traditional use of in silicomodels, such as molecular docking, and its application for studying food proteins and bioactive peptides, followed by an in-depth introduction to the theory of MDS and description of why these molecular simulation techniques are important in the theoretical prediction of structural and functional dynamics of food proteins and bioactive peptides. Applications, limitations, and future prospects of MDS will also be discussed.
