4. Use of a Rotated Riemann Solver for the Two-Dimensional Euler Equations
- Author
-
Levy, David W., Powell, Kenneth G., and vanLeer, Bram
- Abstract
A scheme for the two-dimensional Euler equations that uses flow parameters to determine the direction for upwind-differencing is described. This approach respects the multi-dimensional nature of the equations and reduces the grid-dependence of conventional schemes. Several angles are tested as the dominant upwinding direction, including the local flow and velocity-magnitude-gradient angles. Roe's approximate Riemann solver is used to calculate fluxes in the upwind direction, as well as for the flux components normal to the upwinding direction. The approach is first tested for two-dimensional scalar convection, where the scheme is shown to have accuracy comparable to a high-order MUSCL scheme. Solutions of the Euler equations are calculated for a variety of test cases. Substantial improvement in the resolution of shock and shear waves is realized. The approach is promising in that it uses flow solution features, rather than grid features, to determine the orientation for the solution method. Copyright 1993, 1999 Academic Press

5. Subungual keratoacanthoma
- Author
-
Levy, David W., Bonakdarpour, Akbar, Putong, Paul B., Mesgarzadeh, Mamed, and Betz, Randal R.
- Abstract
The subungual keratoacanthoma is a benign neoplasm which simulates and must be differentiated from squamous cell carcinoma. Subungual keratoacanthomas are rapidly growing tumors, causing bone destruction which usually heal spontaneously. The lesion most often presents as a painful, enlarging mass in middle-aged Caucasian patients. Radiographic examination demonstrates a lytic cup-shaped erosion of the underlying distal phalanx. It is essential to recognize keratoacanthoma and separate it from squamous cell carcinoma, both for prognostic and therapeutic reasons. We present two cases of proven subungual keratoacanthoma and discuss their radiographic and histologic characteristics, as well as the current treatment alternatives for this entity.

- Abstract
Two cases of cryptococcal abscesses were identified in patients with sarcoidosis. The diagnostic imaging tests were not specific for cryptococcus prior to needle aspiration of the abscesses, but they did enable successful biopsy for diagnosis and treatment.
