Twenty sweet potato (Ipomoea batatasL.) cultivars, including two orange‐fleshed and 18 white‐fleshed types, were evaluated in the field for resistance to African sweet potato weevil (Cylas puncticollisBoh.). The cultivars showed significant differences in weevil resistance in separate evaluation of roots and shoots. Cultivars with the most resistant roots were ‘TIS 3053’ and ‘TIS 3030.’ Cultivars with the most resistant shoots were ‘TIS 2532,’ ‘TIS 3017,’ and TIS 3030. A highly significant correlation (r = 0.74) was noted between weevil damage ratings of roots and damage ratings of shoots. A highly significant negative correlation between weevil root damage scores and root dry matter percentage was obtained (r = −0.56), but fresh root yield or average weight were not correlated with weevil damage.

Studies were conducted on components of resistance to sorghum midge on four resistant (DJ 6514, AF 28, TAM 2566 and IS 15107) and two susceptible (CSH 1 and Swarna) cultivars. Short floral parts, faster rate of grain development and high tannin content of grain were apparently associated with resistance to sorghum midge, Contarinia sorghicolaCoq. Genotypic and phenotypic correlations between the factors associated with resistance to sorghum midge were in the same direction (positive or negative) as their association with resistance to this insect. Glume g2, lemma 12, anther and lodicule length, rate of grain development based on dry weight (except oviposition), and tannin content of mature grain showed correlation and path coefficients (direct effects) in the same direction. These characters can serve as a useful criteria to select for resistance to sorghum midge. Using D2and canonical cluster analysis, AF 28 was found to be distinct from other sources of midge resistance. However, based on larvae/100 florets, DJ 6514 was also placed distantly from TAM 2566 and IS 15107. Based on egg numbers, adults emerged and grain damage, DJ 6514 was grouped with TAM 2566 and IS 15107. Susceptible hybrid check, CSH 1 was generally placed distantly from the self pollinated susceptible variety, Swarna. These results indicate that the sources of resistance to sorghum midge are diverse, and there is a distinct possibility of increasing the levels and diversity of resistance to this insect. Des parties florales courtes, un développement plus rapide des graines, ainsi qu’une teneur élevée en tanin de la graine étaient apparemment associés avec la résistance à la cécidomyie du sorgho Contarinia sorghicolaCoq. Des corrélations génotypiques et phénotypiques entre les facteurs asssociés avec la résistance à la cécidomyie avaient la même orientation (positive ou négative) que leur association avec la résistance à cet insecte. La glume g2, la glumelle inférieure 12, la longueur de l’anthére et de la lodicule, le développement de la graine par rapport au poids sec (sauf ponte), et la teneur en tanin de la graine mure ont montré une corrélation et des path-coefficients (effets directs) dans la même orientation. Ces caractéres peuvent servir de critéres utiles de sélection pour la résistance à la cécidomyie. L’utilisation de D2et l’analyse en grappes canonique a permis de mettre en évidence que AF 28 était distinct des autres sources de résistance à la cécidomyie. Cependant, par rapport au nombre de larves/100 florets, DJ 6514 était également éloigné de TAM 2566 et IS 15107. Par rapport aux nombres d’oeufs, nombre d’adultes émergés, et endommagement des graines, DJ 6514 était groupé avec TAM 2566 et IS 15107. Le témoin hybride sensible, CSH 1 était généralement éloigné de la variété sensible autogame, Swarna. Ces résultats indiquent que les sources de résistance à la cécidomyie sont diverses, et qu’il existe une possibilité distincte d’amélioration des niveaux et de la diversité de la résistance à cet insecte.

Seedlings of 462 sorghum lines were screened to identify resistance to the sugarcane aphid, Melanaphis sacchari(Zehntner). About 7% of the lines exhibited resistance in the seedling stage in greenhouse trials. In an advanced screening experiment, 12 sorghum lines had resistance ratings of 1.0–3.0 (highly resistant or resistant). In a similar test, older and larger plants of the same lines were as resistant as in the seedling stage. Lines IS12664C, IS12609C, IS12158C, and IS12661C were highly resistant in preliminary and advanced screening trials. Antixenosis was shown to be a mechanism of resistance. Sorghum lines IS12664C, IS1144C, IS1598C, and IS12661C were less preferred than ‘Mtode’, a susceptible sorghum. Based on greenhouse and field trials, antibiosis adversely affected aphid longevity, days reproducing, and progeny production. On the least antibiotic sorghums, longevity, days reproducing, and number of nymphs produced were as high as 13.7, 6.0, and 26.6, respectively. On the most antibiotic sorghums, these values were 4.5, 0.0, and 0.0. Resistance appeared to be controlled by a dominant gene, but there were indications of modifiers linked to major genes. En essais préliminaires et avancés de criblage, les lignées IS12664C, IS12609C, IS12158C, et IS12661C ont été très résistantes. Le mécanisme de résistance en était l’anti-xenose. Les lignées de sorgho IS12664C, IS1144C, IS1598C, et IS12661C étaient moins préferées que la varieté susceptible de sorgho ’Mtode’. Les résultats obtenus en serre et au champ ont montré que l’anti-biose a affecté de façon défavorable la longévité, la durée de reproduction et le nombre de progénitures de pucerons. Sur les sorghos les moins anti-biotique, la durée de vie, la durée de reproduction et le nombre de nymphes de pucerons ont atteint jusqu’à 13,7, 6,0, et 26,6 respectivement. Sur les sorghos les plus anti-biotiques, ces chiffres sont devenus respectivement 4,5, 0,0, et 0,0. La resistance semblait être contrôlée par un gène dominant, mais avec des indications de modifications liées aux genes majeurs.

Host-plant resistance plays an important role in the insect-pest management either alone or in combination with other control methods. A number of sorghum genotypes showing varying levels of resistance to spotted stem borer, Chilo partellusSwinhoe have been identified using natural and artificial infestations. Major resistance mechanisms are antibiosis and tolerance, though some genotypes exhibit ovipositional non-preferences. There have been a number of factors involved in spotted stem borer resistance; a resistant genotype possesses either one or a combination of these traits. Progress has been made in developing borer resistant breeding lines with moderate yield and acceptable grain quality. Borer resistance is a quantitatively inherited trait governed by additive and non-additive genes. Epistatic gene effects are more pronounced under artificial borer infestation. Cytoplasmic effects appear to be present. Criblage pour la résistance à Chilo partellusSwinhoe chez le sorgho. Plusieurs génotypes de sorgho présentant des niveaux différents de résistance au foreur ponctué du sorgho, Chilo partellusSwinhoe ont été identifiés à partir des infestations naturelles ou artificielles. L’antibiose et la tolérance constituent les mécanismes importants de la résistance, alors que certains génotypes présentent la non-préférence de ponte. Nombre de facteurs contribuent à la résistance au foreur ponctué, le génotype résistant comportant soit un seul ou une combinaison de ces caractères. Des progrès ont été réalisés dans la mise au point de lignées de sélection résistantes au foreur, ayant des rendements modérés et une qualité acceptable du grain. La résistance au foreur est héritée comme caractère quantitatif qui est déterminé par les gènes additifs et non-additifs. Des effets de gènes épistatiques sont plus accentués sous l’infestation artificielle par la foreur. Des effets cytoplasmiques semblent être présents.

Laboratory and field methodologies for screening for resistance against Chilo partelluson sorghum and maize are reviewed in relation to the insect biology, plant phenology and insect-plant interaction. The value of field and laboratory techniques in achieving the goal to produce resistance varieties and hybrids is discussed. Recommendations for future work are made. Les méthodes en pratique de détermination en laboratoire et sur terrain de la résistance du sorgho et du maïs contre le Chilo partellussont actuellement en cours de révision en tenant compte de la consitution biologique de l’insecte, de son apparition suivant les saisons climatiques, et de l’interaction entre l’insecte et la plante. L’efficacité des techniques utilisées en laboratoire et sur terrain pour une mise au point des variétés de plante et hybrides résistant au Chilo partellusest à présente très discutée. Aussi des recommendations (ou propositions) ne cessent de nous parvenir concernant les travaux futurs.

The paper stresses the fact that an integrated pest management system is not a new concept leading to a more stable agroecosystem, but was practiced by the farmers for centuries; host-plant resistance is one of its major components. The system was destabilized by the introduction of new sorghum varieties and hybrids not resistant against the major sorghum insect pests like shootfly Atherigona soccata(Rondani); stem borer, Chilo partellus(Swinhoe); midge, Contarinia sorghicola(Coquillet); and headbugs, Calocoris angustatus(Lethiery). In order to balance the agroecosystem again, an integrated insect pest management system for sorghum has to be developed based on traditional pest management practices. These are host-plant resistance, cultural control and biological control. Insecticides should be used only if absolutely necessary. For a better understanding of such a control approach, a summary of the biology and population dynamics of the major insects is given, together with a brief account on the levels and mechanisms of host-plant resistance so far known. Based on this information, the rainfall pattern, plant duration to maturity, time of planting, natural enemies and insecticides, a sorghum based integrated pest management system is proposed for the monsoon and post-monsoon season in which host-plant resistance alone or in combination with the above mentioned control methods could be used. L’article souligne qu’un système intégré de contrôle des insectes n’est pas un nouveau concept conduisant à un agroécosystème plus stable, mais qu’il a été pratiqué pendant des siècles, par des agriculteurs, la résistance de la plante hôte est un de ses composés majeurs. Le système a été déstabilisé par l’introduction de nouvelles variétés de sorgho et des hybrides non résistant aux insectes majeurs nuisibles au sorgho tels que Atherigona soccata(Rondani), le Chilo partellus(Swinhoe), le Contarinia sorghicola(coquillet) et les Calocoris angustatus(Lethiery). Pour réequilibrer l’agroécosystème, un système intégré de contrôle des insectus nuisibles au sorgho doit être développé, basé sur les pratiques traditionelles de contrôle des insectus suivantes; résistance de la plante hôte, contrôle cultural, contrôle biologique. Les insecticides ne doivent être utilisés que quand c’est absolument nécessaire. Pour une meilleure compréhension d’une telle approche, un résumé des dynamiques de la biologie et de la population des insectes importants est donné avec un text bref expliquant les niveaux et mecanismes connus de la résistance de la plante hôte. Sur la base de ces informations, les types de précipitations, la période avant maturité, moment de la plantation, les ennemis naturels et les insecticides, un système intégré de contrôle des insectes nuisibles au sorgho est proposé pour la mousson et la saison suivant la mousson dans lequel la résistance de la plante hôte seule ou en combinaison avec les méthodes de contrôle citées plus haut pourrait être utilisé.

The occurrence of the cassava mealybug Phenacoccus sp. in Zaire is reported. Data on its biology, particularly oviposition, female fecundity and nymphal development are presented. Most of the insects settle on the leaf midrib and secondary veins and the growing points of cassava. The first instar nymph (crawler) is vary important in the spread and survival of the species, the latter being within dormant leaf buds during the wet season. Dispersal is by movement of infested planting material (passive) and airborne populations of crawlers (active). Treatment of cuttings with an appropriate insecticide before planting, manipulation of planting time and soil moisture conservation may aid in reducing damage to the crop. The occurrence of Spalgis lemolea Druce, a predator of the pest is also reported.

Cassava mosaic disease (CMD) is one of the most serious and widespread diseases throughout cassava growing areas in Africa, causing yield reductions of up to 90%. Early research on breeding of cassava (Manihot esculentaCrantz) for resistance to CMD in Africa is reviewed. Changes in population size and in activity of the white-fly vector to CMD (Bemisia tabaciGenn.) in relation to changes in environmental conditions such as amount and distribution of rainfall, light intensity and temperature are discussed in relation to screening for resistance to CMD. Over the past eight years, significant progress has been made at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). Resistance to CMD has been successfully incorporated into high yielding cultivars of acceptable quality. The CMD resistant material has been evaluated and many promising clones have been selected in various countries in tropical Africa and India. The resistance has been effective in those countries.

The paper reports the outbreak of two new cassava pests, the mealybug Phenacoccus manihoti and the green spider mite Mononychellus tanajoa (Bondar) in Nigeria. Apart from describing the outbreak areas, symptoms, spread and control recommendations are mentioned.

The cassava breeding materials from the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) were evaluated for resistance to cassava green mite (CGM) at the Chambesi and Kizimbani Stations, Tanzania, where CGM population was high. At Chambesi Station, 58 clones (15%) of the 377 clones tested under natural infestation were rated resistant (classes 1 and 2) to CGM. In Zanzibar the CGM-resistant clones, which were high yielding, resistant to cassava mosaic disease (CMD) and acceptable in consumer quality, are being multiplied for distribution to farmers.

Various techniques to increase infestation and improve efficiency of screening sorghum for sorghum midge, Contarinia sorghicola (Coquillett), resistance were tested at ICRISAT Center. Adjustment of planting dates to synchronize flowering with period of peak abundance of adult midges, planting infester rows of susceptible cultivars (‘CSH 1’ and ‘CSH 5’) 20 d before test cultivars, spreading midge-damaged sorghum panicles containing diapausing midge larvae in infester rows, and using sprinkler irrigation during flowering in the postrainy season helped to increase midge abundance. Careful and selective use of contact insecticides to control head bug, Calocoris angustatus Lethiery, and midge parasite Tetrastichus diplosidis Crawther was useful in screening and selecting sorghum cultivars for midge resistance. Planting two sets of test material at fortnightly intervals helped to reduce chances that sorghum would escape midge damage. Maintaining thin plant stands also increased midge damage by preventing population dilution due to fewer numbers of panicles per unit area.

A cage technique to screen sorghum cultivars for resistance to sorghum midge, Contarinia sorghicola (Coquillett), under no-choice conditions was developed and standardized. Forty adult midges collected during morning hours (0800-1100 hours) from flowering sorghum panicles and introduced into the cage at the top- to half-anthesis stage for 2 consecutive d resulted in maximum midge damage in the susceptible cultivar ‘CSH 1’. Wire-framed cage covered with a blue bag caused the most damage in ‘CSH 1’. This technique is useful for verification of midge resistance observed under field conditions. Resistance of 21 sorghum cultivars to sorghum midge was compared under no-choice cage and natural conditions for four seasons. Of 15 cultivars reported to be resistant to sorghum midge under natural conditions, only three (‘DJ 6514’, ‘TAM 2566’, and ‘IS 12666C’) showed repeatable levels of resistance under no-choice conditions during the four seasons. ‘TAM 2566’ and ‘IS 12666C’ were less attractive to the midges (<4 midges per five panicles) than the midge susceptible hybrid sorghum ‘CSH 1’ (19 midges per five panicles) under field conditions. Fourteen cultivars that were either less attractive to adult midges or had ≤12% florets with midge larvae under natural conditions showed a susceptible reaction under no-choice testing in the cage. Cultivar reactions to midge were stable under the cage over four seasons (except ‘IS 2328’). Using first two principal component cluster analysis, ‘TAM 2566’ and ‘DJ 6514’ were grouped together as the most resistant cultivars. Sources of resistance to midge thus placed in different groups can be used to increase levels of midge resistance by hybridization among cultivars belonging to different groups.
