It is shown that biotechnology firms in the United States initiate and successfully complete more research and development projects than European firms. Research is presented proposing that sources of heterogeneity within the research and development investment process are the reason behind America's comparative advantage.

The article provides information on the PREMIS Data Dictionary for Preservation Metadata, the first comprehensive specification for preservation metadata produced from an international, cross-domain consensus-building process. Following its release, the PREMIS Data Dictionary won the 2005 Digital Preservation Award and the 2006 Society of American Archivists Preservation Publication Award.

The article focuses on the article "Thirteen Ways of Looking at … Digital Preservation," of the author and his colleague Lorcan Dempsey. It presents their perspectives on the technical imperatives of digital preservation. Furthermore, the article includes the problems that must be addressed to ensure the survivability of materials.

The article reports that in March 2000, OCLC and RLG announced their shared commitment to encourage the development of infrastructure to support the long-term preservation of digital materials. This commitment was later made concrete with the creation of two working groups, jointly sponsored by OCLC and RLG and comprised of expert participants from a variety of institutional and geographical backgrounds. The first working group was charged with identifying key attributes and responsibilities of trusted digital repositories serving cultural heritage institutions. The attributes and responsibilities working group completed its work in May 2002 with the publication of a well-received report summarizing its findings.
