ABSTRACTSocial infrastructure is an emerging research frontier in urban geography and urban studies. This editorial introduction provides a concise introduction to the term. It briefly sets out the intellectual provenance of the concept of social infrastructure, examining the different ways social infrastructure is being used across urban geography.

ABSTRACTCities need social infrastructure, places that support social connection in neighborhoods and across communities. In the face of austerity in many places, the provision of such infrastructures are under threat. To protect such infrastructures, it is important to have robust arguments for their provision, maintenance, and protection. Through a case study of a dispute about the appropriate use and provisioning of an everyday park located in London, UK, this article examines what social infrastructure is and why it matters. The dispute has brought to the surface a number of critical questions about how to fund and provide collective, public social life. It has also raised questions about what types of social and collective life should be valued. To examine the dispute a sixfold typology is developed to explore the different registers of sociality afforded by social infrastructure: co-presence, sociability and friendship, care and kinship, kinesthetic practices, and civic engagement.

Over the past couple of decades, human geography has seen a proliferation in its empirical reach. This proliferation has been associated with a series of ongoing attempts to reconsider the kinds of time-spaces through which the world is made. Responding to Allen (2011), this article argues that thinking topologically about time-space does not simply add one more spatial register to existing framings of time-space. Rather, in all sorts of ways it challenges these understandings.

Summary This paper explores the dynamics of engagement and disengagement within urban space. It argues that a certain capacity to encounter the world around the self in an active, creative way is central to the self's ability to recognize and care about the places it inhabits and the people encountered within those places. Drawing on the work of Donald Winnicott and Jessica Benjamin, it outlines a framework of self‐other psycho‐dynamics through which this active, creative encountering may be understood, and examines the violence of indifference that occurs when this everyday creativity is absent.

The plasma concentration—time profile of verapamil was studied in eight healthy drug-free volunteers after oral administration of a single 80 mg dose of the drug on six separate occasions at different times of day (4 AM, 8 AM, noon, 4 PM, 8 PM, and midnight). The median maximum plasma concentration of verapamil was significantly higher after the 8 AM and noon administrations (p < 0.05) than at any other time. The median area under the concentration-time curve was also significantly higher (p < 0.05) after administration at 8 AM and noon than at other times. The median time to maximum concentration was not significantly different at any time point (p > 0.05). It is possible that concentration-related adverse effects of verapamil could be avoided by choosing the time of day when the drug is prescribed. This concept may also apply to other drugs that have circadian effects in their pharmacokinetic profiles.

AbstractWhile the methodological diversity of human geography is increasing, students often struggle when confronted with techniques that challenge the limits of what they understand to be their discipline’s relation to the real world. This problem is amplified by the experimental and incremental nature of certain kinds of qualitative methodologies. This article reports on our efforts, supported by the GEES Subject Centre, to facilitate particular kinds of student engagement with ‘real-world’ urban spaces, and to allow students to manage the experience of this engagement. We pay particular attention to the use made by students of wiki-sites as tools for managing the interface between field, class, and web-based learning. In concluding, we use our experience to reflect upon the value of the idea of ‘real-world’ in relation to teaching and learning.

The fishery that resides just feet away from the harbor in Kona, Hawaii, consistently redefines my expectations.
