We revisit the nature, structure, and evolution of the Ionian Basin and its surrounding passive margins (Apulia, Eastern Sicily/Malta, and Cyrenaica margins). Relying on geological observations (wells, dredges, and dives) and seismic calibrations from the surrounding platforms and escarpments, we present age correlations for the deepest sedimentary sequences of the Ionian Basin. Two‐ship deep refraction seismic data combined with reprocessed reflection seismic data enable us to identify, characterize, and map these thick sedimentary sequences and to present a consistent seismic stratigraphy across the basin. At a larger scale, we present new geological transects illustrating the tectonostratigraphic relationships between the Ionian Basin and its surrounding rifted margins. On this basis, we suggest that a Late Triassic‐Early Jurassic rifting preceded the late Early Jurassic to Middle Jurassic formation of the Ionian Basin. The combination of geophysical and geological arguments suggests that the entire deep basin is floored with oceanic crust of normal thickness, but with high seismic velocity in the upper part. Upscaling our results in the framework of the eastern Mediterranean, we propose that the Ionian Basin represents the remnant of a short‐lived oceanic basin resulting from the interaction between two propagating oceans: the Central Atlantic and the Neo‐Tethys. La educación al paciente parapléjico es indispensable para prevenir las complicaciones secundarias derivadas de los déficits motores y sensitivos, completos o incompletos, secundarios a la lesión neurológica. El paciente es el protagonista principal de la prevención y debe recibir formación respecto a su autovigilancia. El pie del paciente parapléjico es parte integrante de esta autovigilancia. Los terapeutas tienen que estar bien formados con relación a esta vigilancia y deben participar en la educación al paciente. La vigilancia ha de centrarse muy especialmente en los aspectos cutáneo (úlcera por presión) y neuroortopédico (espasticidad, retracción). El calzado y los aparatos ortopédicos deben adaptarse en función de las posibles deformaciones (equino, varo). Los cuidados de pedicura son esenciales en este proceso, sobre todo para la prevención de las uñas encarnadas y de otras complicaciones locales.

An analysis of magnetic fabric has been performed in weakly deformed Paleocene-Eocene limestone adjacent to two subparallel ramp-related folds (Akseki and Ormana folds) from the western Taurus (Turkey). The magnetic fabric of tectonic origin records two trends of well-defined magnetic lineation: N160 ° ± 7 ° and N130 ° ± 14 ° in front of the Akseki and Ormana folds, respectively. The trend of the magnetic lineation is oblique to the Akseki fold, whereas in the Ormana fold, magnetic lineation and fold axis are subparallel. The observed change in the trend of magnetic lineation is probably linked to a change of the shortening direction that occurred during the development of the thrust system. This shows that the two subparallel folds result from two different translation vectors.

The present results concern the recombinant bacteriaEscherichia coliHB101(GAPDH) which produces glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase. An unusual phenomenon was noticed concerning the plasmid stability of this strain growing in batch culture. The determination of sensitivity to ampicillin, whose resistance is carried by the plasmid, has been tested as a function of time on Petri dishes containing increasing concentrations of ampicillin in a batch culture in a complex medium without any selection pressure. A transitory decrease in the percentage of resistant cells has been noted during the exponential phase of growth. This phenomenon corresponds to a momentary plasmid instability probably due to a transitory gap between the growth rate of the cell and the duplication rate of the plasmid.

Position emission tomography can picture the distribution of flow tracers as well as of metabolic substrates or analogs. Studies of the distribution of these tracers allow to infer information about regional myocardial clearance (flow x extraction) and substrate utilization. In a study of 32 patients after myocardial infarction, we have contrasted flow and substrate utilization to demonstrate ischemic but viable myocardium in the arterial territory of the infarct in a number of patients also specially after fibrinolytic reperfusion. Restoration of blood flow to the ischemic but viable myocardium through coronary bypass or dilatation improves flow from 56.3% to 84.2% of control and restores substrate utilization. In another group of 32 patients studied with the Strontium-82/Rubidium-82 generator, we have demonstrated perfusion changes both in the myocardial infarct area and at a distance. These changes predominate in patients with multiple vessel disease. Combined PET studies of flow and substrate utilization are new tools to study early intervention after myocardial infarction and to document the benefits of revascularization.
