Longitudinally polarized beams have unique properties that are different from a traditional transversely polarized beam. By modulating the amplitude, phase and polarization of the incident beam, various longitudinal polarization fields can be obtained in a large-numerical aperture focusing system. Here we propose a simple and efficient method to generate longitudinally polarized light needle with pure phase element and radially polarized Gaussian beam. The phase element is designed with simulated annealing algorithm. The high purity longitudinally polarized light needle formed near the focal point has a horizontal full width at half maximum of 0.39λand a non-diffraction distance of 4λ. This method can be employed to design other pure phase elements for generating beams with special longitudinal polarization distributions.

Energy conservation and environmental protection has progressively developed into the hot and popular topics in nowadays. In the process of natural gas transmission, almost all the power of the compressor stations has been used to overcome the friction consumption between the flowing gas and pipeline wall, so large numbers of resources are spent on the maintenance of the pumping stations every year. How to reduce the wall friction and increase the transportation output has been becoming the urgent problem to be resolved. Internal smooth coating, injecting nano-chain drag reduction agent and bio-inspired drag-reducing morphology have been gradually taken into application in the past several decades, and the field testing results were all striking and satisfactory. An overview of applying different drag reduction technologies into nature gas pipelining is systemically presented in detail, which has the important significance to understand research status and development tendency of nature gas industry.

Our living environment is surrounded by turbulence, which is also a concern of the global energy consumption and the greenhouse gas emission, and the viscous force on the solid-liquid/solid-gas interface is an important part of the turbulence. Reducing friction force in turbulence to the greatest extent is becoming an urgent issue to be resolved at present. In this paper, the various state-of-the-art approaches of drag-reducing and energy-saving technologies based on the boundary layer control are reviewed, focusing on the polymer drag reduction additives, the micro-morphology, the super-hydrophobic surface, the micro air bubbles, the heating wall, the vibrant flexible wall and the composite drag reduction methods. In addition, the mechanisms of different drag reductions based on the boundary layer control and the potential applications in fluid engineering are discussed. This paper aims not only to contribute to a better understanding of drag reduction mechanisms, but also to offer new perspectives to improve the current drag-reducing and energy saving technologies.

The device is designed to be subcutaneously mounted on the periosteal surface of the tibia. The magnetomechanical behavior of Terfenol-D smart magnetostrictive material has been well investigated in the literature when a magnetic field is applied along the longitudinal direction of the Terfenol-D material (perpendicular to the material’s magnetic moment). However, the requirement of our device is to have the magnetic field transversely applied on the Terfenol-D material (along the material’s magnetic moment). Therefore, the objective of this work was to study the magnetomechanical behavior of Terfenol-D under a transversely applied magnetic field. Experimental work was performed and a Terfenol-D material constitutive behavior was investigated.
