Emerging memories such as resistive random access memory (ReRAM) and spin-transfer torque magnetic random access memory (STT-MRAM) are candidates for embedded last-level persistent cache. The maximum attainable array efficiency relies on pairing the storage element with a compatible access device or selector. Here, we leverage the high-temperature spin-state driven insulator-to-metal (IMT) phase transition in a strongly correlated oxide, LaCoO3 (LCO), to demonstrate a two-terminal bi-directional selector suitable for cross-point embedded non-volatile memory. Vertical selectors are fabricated and characterized using epitaxial heterostructures of LCO thin films grown on La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 (LSCO) bottom electrodes. We demonstrate electrically triggered abrupt IMT switching in the selector devices across a range of chip operating temperatures (>85 °C) with switching speed less than 20 ns, on current density of $5\times 10^{{6}}$ A/cm2, half-bias nonlinearity of $135\times $ , and cycling endurance exceeding $10^{{12}}$ cycles.

The alkaline earth stannates are touted for their wide band gaps and the highest room-temperature electron mobilities among all of the perovskite oxides. CaSnO3has the highest measured band gap in this family and is thus a particularly promising ultrawide band gap semiconductor. However, discouraging results from previous theoretical studies and failed doping attempts had described this material as “undopable”. Here we redeem CaSnO3using hybrid molecular beam epitaxy, which provides an adsorption-controlled growth for the phase-pure, epitaxial, and stoichiometric CaSnO3films. By introducing lanthanum (La) as an n-type dopant, we demonstrate the robust and predictable doping of CaSnO3with free electron concentrations, n3D, from 3.3 × 1019cm–3to 1.6 × 1020cm–3. The films exhibit a maximum room-temperature mobility of 42 cm2V–1s–1at n3D= 3.3 × 1019cm–3. Despite having a comparable radius as the host ion, La expands the lattice parameter. Using density functional calculations, this effect is attributed to the energy gain by lowering the conduction band upon volume expansion. Finally, we exploit robust doping by fabricating CaSnO3-based field-effect transistors. The transistors show promise for CaSnO3’s high-voltage capabilities by exhibiting low off-state leakage below 2 × 10–5mA/mm at a drain–source voltage of 100 V and on–off ratios exceeding 106. This work serves as a starting point for future studies on the semiconducting properties of CaSnO3and many devices that could benefit from CaSnO3’s exceptionally wide band gap.

Measurement of picometer-scale atomic displacements by aberration-corrected STEM has become invaluable in the study of crystalline materials, where it can elucidate ordering mechanisms and local heterogeneities. HAADF-STEM imaging, often used for such measurements due to its atomic number contrast, is generally considered insensitive to light atoms such as oxygen. Light atoms, however, still affect the propagation of the electron beam in the sample and, therefore, the collected signal. Here, we demonstrate experimentally and through simulations that cation sites in distorted perovskites can appear to be displaced by several picometers from their true positions in shared cation–anion columns. The effect can be decreased through careful choice of sample thickness and beam voltage or can be entirely avoided if the experiment allows reorientation of the crystal along a more favorable zone axis. Therefore, it is crucial to consider the possible effects of light atoms and crystal symmetry and orientation when measuring atomic positions.

The occurrence of superconductivity in proximity to various strongly correlated phases of matter has drawn extensive focus on their normal state properties, to develop an understanding of the state from which superconductivity emerges1–4. The recent finding of superconductivity in layered nickelates raises similar interests5–8. However, transport measurements of doped infinite-layer nickelate thin films have been hampered by materials limitations of these metastable compounds: in particular, a high density of extended defects9–11. Here, by moving to a substrate (LaAlO3)0.3(Sr2TaAlO6)0.7that better stabilizes the growth and reduction conditions, we can synthesize the doping series of Nd1–xSrxNiO2essentially free from extended defects. In their absence, the normal state resistivity shows a low-temperature upturn in the underdoped regime, linear behaviour near optimal doping and quadratic temperature dependence for overdoping. This is phenomenologically similar to the copper oxides2,12despite key distinctions—namely, the absence of an insulating parent compound5,6,9,10, multiband electronic structure13,14and a Mott–Hubbard orbital alignment rather than the charge-transfer insulator of the copper oxides15,16. We further observe an enhancement of superconductivity, both in terms of transition temperature and range of doping. These results indicate a convergence in the electronic properties of both superconducting families as the scale of disorder in the nickelates is reduced.

The Jahn–Teller effect, in which electronic configurations with energetically degenerate orbitals induce lattice distortions to lift this degeneracy, has a key role in many symmetry-lowering crystal deformations1. Lattices of Jahn–Teller ions can induce a cooperative distortion, as exemplified by LaMnO3(refs. 2,3). Although many examples occur in octahedrally4or tetrahedrally5coordinated transition metal oxides due to their high orbital degeneracy, this effect has yet to be manifested for square-planar anion coordination, as found in infinite-layer copper6,7, nickel8,9, iron10,11and manganese oxides12. Here we synthesize single-crystal CaCoO2thin films by topotactic reduction of the brownmillerite CaCoO2.5phase. We observe a markedly distorted infinite-layer structure, with ångström-scale displacements of the cations from their high-symmetry positions. This can be understood to originate from the Jahn–Teller degeneracy of the dxzand dyzorbitals in the d7electronic configuration along with substantial ligand–transition metal mixing. A complex pattern of distortions arises in a 22×22×1tetragonal supercell, reflecting the competition between an ordered Jahn–Teller effect on the CoO2sublattice and the geometric frustration of the associated displacements of the Ca sublattice, which are strongly coupled in the absence of apical oxygen. As a result of this competition, the CaCoO2structure forms an extended two-in–two-out type of Co distortion following ‘ice rules’13.

Nickel-based superconductors provide a long-awaited experimental platform to explore possible cuprate-like superconductivity. Despite similar crystal structure and delectron filling, however, superconductivity in nickelates has thus far only been stabilized in thin-film geometry, raising questions about the polar interface between substrate and thin film. Here we conduct a detailed experimental and theoretical study of the prototypical interface between Nd1−xSrxNiO2and SrTiO3. Atomic-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy in the scanning transmission electron microscope reveals the formation of a single intermediate Nd(Ti,Ni)O3layer. Density functional theory calculations with a Hubbard Uterm show how the observed structure alleviates the polar discontinuity. We explore the effects of oxygen occupancy, hole doping and cation structure to disentangle the contributions of each for reducing interface charge density. Resolving the non-trivial interface structure will be instructive for future synthesis of nickelate films on other substrates and in vertical heterostructures.

Spontaneous hierarchical self-organization of nanometre-scale subunits into higher-level complex structures is ubiquitous in nature. The creation of synthetic nanomaterials that mimic the self-organization of complex superstructures commonly seen in biomolecules has proved challenging due to the lack of biomolecule-like building blocks that feature versatile, programmable interactions to render structural complexity. In this study, highly aligned structures are obtained from an organic–inorganic mesophase composed of monodisperse Cd37S18magic-size cluster building blocks. Impressively, structural alignment spans over six orders of magnitude in length scale: nanoscale magic-size clusters arrange into a hexagonal geometry organized inside micrometre-sized filaments; self-assembly of these filaments leads to fibres that then organize into uniform arrays of centimetre-scale bands with well-defined surface periodicity. Enhanced patterning can be achieved by controlling processing conditions, resulting in bullseye and ‘zigzag’ stacking patterns with periodicity in two directions. Overall, we demonstrate that colloidal nanomaterials can exhibit a high level of self-organization behaviour at macroscopic-length scales.

The rich physics permeating the phase diagrams of quantum materials have commanded the attention of the solid-state chemistry, materials science, and condensed-matter physics communities, sparking immense research into quantum phase transitions including superconducting, ferroic, and charge-order transitions. Many of these transitions occur at low temperatures and involve electronic, magnetic, or lattice order, which emerges on the atomic to mesoscopic scales. The complex interplay of these states and the heterogeneity that arises due to competition and intertwining of phases, however, is not fully understood and requires probes that capture ordering over multiple length scales down to the local atomic symmetries. Advances in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) have enabled atomic-resolution imaging as well as mapping of functional picometer-scale atomic displacements inside materials. In this Account, we discuss our group’s work to expand the reach of atomic-resolution STEM to cryogenic temperatures (cryo-STEM) to study quantum materials with focus on charge-ordered systems.

The recent observation of superconductivity in thin-film infinite-layer nickelates1–3offers a different angle from which to investigate superconductivity in layered oxides4. A wide range of candidate models have been proposed5–10, which emphasize single- or multi-orbital electronic structure, Kondo or Hund’s coupling and analogies to cuprates. Further experimental characterization of the superconducting state is needed to develop a full understanding of the nickelates. Here we use magnetotransport measurements to probe the superconducting anisotropy in Nd0.775Sr0.225NiO2. We find that the upper critical field is surprisingly isotropic at low temperatures despite the layered crystal structure. In a magnetic field, the superconductivity is strongly Pauli-limited, such that the paramagnetic effect dominates over orbital de-pairing. Underlying this isotropic response is a substantial anisotropy in the superconducting coherence length, which is at least four times longer in-plane than out-of-plane. A prominent low-temperature upturn in the upper critical field indicates the presence of an unconventional ground state.

Epitaxially connected quantum dot solids have emerged as an interesting class of quantum confined materials with the potential for highly tunable electronic structures. Realization of the predicted emergent electronic properties has remained elusive due in part to defective interdot epitaxial connections. Thermal annealing has shown potential to eliminate such defects, but a direct understanding of this mechanism hinges on determining the nature of defects in the connections and how they respond to heating. Here, we use in situheating in the scanning transmission electron microscope to probe the effect of heating on distinct defect types. We apply a real space, local strain mapping technique, which allows us to identify tensile and shear strain in the atomic lattice, highlighting tensile, shear, and bending defects in interdot connections. We also track the out-of-plane orientation of individual QDs and infer the prevalence of out-of-plane twisting and bending defects as a function of annealing. We find that tensile and shear defects are fully relaxed upon mild thermal annealing, while bending defects persist. Additionally, out-of-plane orientation tracking reveals an increase in correctly oriented QDs, pointing to a relaxation of either twisting defects or out-of-plane bending defects. While bending defects remain, highlighting the need for further study of orientational ordering during the preattachment phase of superlattice formation, these atomic-scale insights show that annealing can effectively eliminate tensile and shear defects, a promising step toward delocalization of charge carriers and tunable electronic properties.

Since the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in copper oxide materials1, there have been sustained efforts to both understand the origins of this phase and discover new cuprate-like superconducting materials2. One prime materials platform has been the rare-earth nickelates and, indeed, superconductivity was recently discovered in the doped compound Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2(ref. 3). Undoped NdNiO2belongs to a series of layered square-planar nickelates with chemical formula Ndn+1NinO2n+2and is known as the ‘infinite-layer’ (n= ∞) nickelate. Here we report the synthesis of the quintuple-layer (n= 5) member of this series, Nd6Ni5O12, in which optimal cuprate-like electron filling (d8.8) is achieved without chemical doping. We observe a superconducting transition beginning at ~13 K. Electronic structure calculations, in tandem with magnetoresistive and spectroscopic measurements, suggest that Nd6Ni5O12interpolates between cuprate-like and infinite-layer nickelate-like behaviour. In engineering a distinct superconducting nickelate, we identify the square-planar nickelates as a new family of superconductors that can be tuned via both doping and dimensionality.

The formation of defect-free two-dimensional nanocrystal (NC) superstructures remains a challenge as persistent defects hinder charge delocalization and related device performance. Understanding defect formation is an important step toward developing strategies to mitigate their formation. However, specific mechanisms of defect formation are difficult to determine, as superlattice phase transformations that occur during fabrication are quite complex and there are a variety of factors influencing the disorder in the final structure. Here, we use Molecular Dynamics (MD) and electron microscopy in concert to investigate the nucleation of the epitaxial attachment of lead chalcogenide (PbX, where X = S, Se) NC assemblies. We use an updated implementation of an existing reactive force field in an MD framework to investigate how initial orientational (mis)alignment of the constituent building blocks impacts the final structure of the epitaxially connected superlattice. This Simple Molecular Reactive Force Field (SMRFF) captures both short-range covalent forces and long-range electrostatic forces and allows us to follow orientational and translational changes of NCs during superlattice transformation. Our simulations reveal how robust the oriented attachment is with regard to the initial configuration of the NCs, measuring its sensitivity to both in-plane and out-of-plane misorientation. We show that oriented attachment nucleates through the initial formation of dimers, which corroborate experimentally observed structures. We present high-resolution structural analysis of dimers at early stages of the superlattice transformation and rationalize their contribution to the formation of defects in the final superlattice. Collectively, the simulations and experiments presented in this paper provide insights into the nucleation of NC oriented attachment, the impact of the initial configuration of NCs on the structural fidelity of the final epitaxially connected superlattice, and the propensity to form commonly observed defects, such as missing bridges and atomic misalignment in the superlattice due to the formation of dimers. We present potential strategies to mitigate the formation of superlattice defects.

A variety of nickel oxide compounds have long been studied for their manifestation of various correlated electron phenomena. Recently, superconductivity was observed in nanoscale infinite layer nickelate thin films of Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2, epitaxially stabilized on SrTiO3substrates via topotactic reduction from the perovskite precursor phase. Here, we present the synthesis and properties of PrNiO2thin films on SrTiO3. Upon doping in Pr0.8Sr0.2NiO2, we observe superconductivity with a transition temperature of 7–12 K and robust critical current density at 2 K of 334 kA/cm2. These findings indicate that superconductivity in the infinite layer nickelates is relatively insensitive to the details of the rare earth 4fconfiguration. Furthermore, they motivate the exploration of a broader family of compounds based on two-dimensional NiO2planes, which will enable systematic investigation of the superconducting and normal state properties and their underlying mechanisms.

Understanding the mechanism and ultimately directing nanocrystal (NC) superlattice assembly and attachment have important implications on future advances in this emerging field. Here, we use 4D-STEM to investigate a monolayer of PbS NCs at various stages of the transformation from a hexatic assembly to a nonconnected square-like superlattice over large fields of view. Maps of nanobeam electron diffraction patterns acquired with an electron microscope pixel array detector (EMPAD) offer unprecedented detail into the 3D crystallographic alignment of the polyhedral NCs. Our analysis reveals that superlattice transformation is dominated by translation of prealigned NCs strongly coupled along the <11n>ALdirection and occurs stochastically and gradually throughout single grains. We validate the generality of the proposed mechanism by examining the structure of analogous PbSe NC assemblies using conventional transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction. The experimental results presented here provide new mechanistic insights into NC self-assembly and oriented attachment.

Dental enamel is a principal component of teeth1, and has evolved to bear large chewing forces, resist mechanical fatigue and withstand wear over decades2. Functional impairment and loss of dental enamel, caused by developmental defects or tooth decay (caries), affect health and quality of life, with associated costs to society3. Although the past decade has seen progress in our understanding of enamel formation (amelogenesis) and the functional properties of mature enamel, attempts to repair lesions in this material or to synthesize it in vitro have had limited success4–6. This is partly due to the highly hierarchical structure of enamel and additional complexities arising from chemical gradients7–9. Here we show, using atomic-scale quantitative imaging and correlative spectroscopies, that the nanoscale crystallites of hydroxylapatite (Ca5(PO4)3(OH)), which are the fundamental building blocks of enamel, comprise two nanometric layers enriched in magnesium flanking a core rich in sodium, fluoride and carbonate ions; this sandwich core is surrounded by a shell with lower concentration of substitutional defects. A mechanical model based on density functional theory calculations and X-ray diffraction data predicts that residual stresses arise because of the chemical gradients, in agreement with preferential dissolution of the crystallite core in acidic media. Furthermore, stresses may affect the mechanical resilience of enamel. The two additional layers of hierarchy suggest a possible new model for biological control over crystal growth during amelogenesis, and hint at implications for the preservation of biomarkers during tooth development.

Periodic arrays of strongly coupled colloidal quantum dots (QDs) may enable unprecedented control of electronic band structure through manipulation of QD size, shape, composition, spacing, and assembly geometry. This includes the possibilities of precisely engineered bandgaps and charge carrier mobilities, as well as remarkable behaviors such as metal–insulator transitions, massless carriers, and topological states. However, experimental realization of these theoretically predicted electronic structures is presently limited by structural disorder. Here, we use aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy to precisely quantify the orientational disorder of epitaxially connected QD films. In spite of coherent atomic connectivity between nearest neighbor QDs, we find misalignment persists with a standard deviation of 1.9°, resulting in significant bending strain localized to the adjoining necks. We observe and quantify a range of out-of-plane particle orientations over thousands of QDs and correlate the in-plane and out-of-plane misalignments, finding QDs misoriented out-of-plane display a statistically greater misalignment with respect to their in-plane neighbors as well. Using the bond orientational order metric ψ4, we characterize the 4-fold symmetry and introduce a quantification of the local superlattice (SL) orientation. This enables direct comparison between local orientational order in the SL and atomic lattice (AL). We find significantly larger variations in the SL orientation and a statistically robust but locally highly variable correlation between the orientations of the two differently scaled lattices. Distinct AL and SL behaviors are observed about a grain boundary, with a sharp boundary in the AL orientations, but a more smooth transition in the SL, facilitated by lattice deformation between the neighboring grains. Coupling between the AL and SL is a fundamental driver of film growth, and these results suggest nontrivial underlying mechanics, implying that simplified models of epitaxial attachment may be insufficient to understand QD growth and disorder when oriented attachment and superlattice growth occur in concert.

Incorporating magnetism into two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures is crucial for the development of functional electronic and magnetic devices. Here, we show that Nb3X8(X = Cl, Br) is a family of 2D layered trimerized kagomé magnets that are paramagnetic at high temperatures and undergo a first-order phase transition on cooling to a singlet magnetic state. X-ray diffraction shows that a rearrangement of the vdW stacking accompanies the magnetic transition, with high- and low-temperature phases consistent with scanning transmission electron microscopy images of the end members α-Nb3Cl8and β-Nb3Br8. The temperature of this transition is systematically varied across the solid solution Nb3Cl8–xBrx(x= 0–8), with x= 6 having transitions near room temperature. The solid solution also varies the optical properties, which are further modulated by the phase transition. As such, they provide a platform on which to understand and exploit the interplay between dimensionality, magnetism, and optoelectronic behavior in vdW materials.

Aliovalent doping of CdSe nanocrystals (NCs) via cation exchange processes has resulted in interesting and novel observations for the optical and electronic properties of the NCs. However, despite over a decade of study, these observations have largely gone unexplained, partially due to an inability to precisely characterize the physical properties of the doped NCs. Here, electrostatic force microscopy was used to determine the static charge on individual, cation-doped CdSe NCs in order to investigate their net charge as a function of added cations. While the NC charge was relatively insensitive to the relative amount of doped cation per NC, there was a remarkable and unexpected correlation between the average NC charge and PL intensity, for all dopant cations introduced. We conclude that the changes in PL intensity, as tracked also by changes in NC charge, are likely a consequence of changes in the NC radiative rate caused by symmetry breaking of the electronic states of the nominally spherical NC due to the Coulombic potential introduced by ionized cations.

We report measurements of current-induced torques in heterostructures of Permalloy (Py) with TaTe2, a transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) material possessing low crystal symmetry, and observe a torque component with Dresselhaus symmetry. We suggest that the dominant mechanism for this Dresselhaus component is not a spin–orbit torque but rather the Oersted field arising from a component of current that flows perpendicular to the applied voltage due to resistance anisotropy within the TaTe2. This type of transverse current is not present in wires made from a single uniform layer of a material with resistance anisotropy but will result whenever a material with resistance anisotropy is integrated into a heterostructure with materials having different resistivities, thereby producing a spatially nonuniform pattern of current flow. This effect will therefore influence measurements in a wide variety of heterostructures incorporating 2D TMD materials and other materials with low crystal symmetries.

By combining a surfactant, an organic pore expander, a silane, and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), we have observed the formation of a previously unknown set of ultrasmall silica structures in aqueous solutions. At appropriate concentrations of reagents, ∼2 nm primary silica clusters arrange around surfactant micelles to form ultrasmall silica rings, which can further evolve into cage-like structures. With increasing concentration, these rings line up into segmented worm-like one-dimensional (1D) structures, an effect that can be dramatically enhanced by PEG addition. PEG adsorbed 1D striped cylinders further arrange into higher order assemblies in the form of two-dimensional (2D) sheets or three-dimensional (3D) helical structures. Results provide insights into synergies between deformable noncovalent organic molecule assemblies and covalent inorganic network formation as well as early transformation pathways from spherical soft materials into 1D, 2D, and 3D silica solution structures, hallmarks of mesoporous silica materials formation. The ultrasmall silica ring and cage structures may prove useful in nanomedicine and other nanotechnology based applications.

Approaches for regulating electrochemical stability of liquid electrolytes in contact with solid-state electrodes are a requirement for efficient and reversible electrical energy storage in batteries. Such methods are particularly needed in electrochemical cells in which the working potentials of the electrodes lie outside the thermodynamic stability limits of the liquid electrolyte. Here we study electrochemical stability of liquids at electrolyte/electrode interfaces protected by nanometer thick, high electrical bandgap ceramic phases. We report that well-designed ceramic interphasesextend the oxidative stability limits for both protic and aprotic liquid electrolytes, in some cases by as much as 1.5 V. It is shown further that such interphases facilitate stable electrodeposition of reactive metals such as lithium at high Coulombic efficiency and in electrochemical cells subject to extended galvanostatic cycling at a current density of 3 mA cm–2and at capacities as high as 3 mAh cm–2. High-resolution cryo-FIB-SEM characterization reveals that solid/compact Li electrodeposits anchored by the ceramic interphase are the source of the enhanced Li deposition stability. The results enable a proof-of-concept “anode-free” Li metal rechargeable battery in which Li initially provided in the cathode is the only source of lithium in the cell.

Interfaces between complex oxides constitute a unique playground for two-dimensional electron systems (2DESs), where superconductivity and magnetism can arise from combinations of bulk insulators. The 2DES at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3interface is one of the most studied in this regard, and its origin is determined by the polar field in LaAlO3as well as by the presence of point defects, like oxygen vacancies and intermixed cations. These defects usually reside in the conduction channel and are responsible for a decrease of the electronic mobility. In this work, we use an amorphous WO3overlayer to obtain a high-mobility 2DES in WO3/LaAlO3/SrTiO3heterostructures. The studied system shows a sharp insulator-to-metal transition as a function of both LaAlO3and WO3layer thickness. Low-temperature magnetotransport reveals a strong magnetoresistance reaching 900% at 10 T and 1.5 K, the presence of multiple conduction channels with carrier mobility up to 80 000 cm2V–1s–1, and quantum oscillations of conductance.

Substrates able to rectify transport of ions based on charge and/or size are ubiquitous in biological systems. Electrolytes and interphases that selectively transport electrochemically active ions are likewise of broad interest in all electrical energy storage technologies. In lithium-ion batteries, electrolytes with single- or near-single-ion conductivity reduce losses caused by ion polarization. In emergent lithium or sodium metal batteries, they maintain high conductivity at the anode and stabilize metal deposition by fundamental mechanisms. We report that 20- to 300-nm-thick, single-ion-conducting membranes deposited at the anode enable electrolytes with the highest combination of cation transference number, ionic conductivity, and electrochemical stability reported. By means of direct visualization we find that single-ion membranes also reduce dendritic deposition of Li in liquids. Galvanostatic measurements further show that the electrolytes facilitate long (3 mAh) recharge of full Li/LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2(NCA) cells with high cathode loadings (3 mAh cm−2/19.9 mg cm−2) and at high current densities (3 mA cm−2).

Epitaxially connected assemblies of nanocrystals (NCs) present an interesting new class of nanomaterial in which confinement of charge carriers is intermediate between that of a quantum dot and a quantum well. Despite impressive advances in the formation of high-fidelity assemblies, predicted collective properties have not yet emerged. A critical knowledge gap toward realizing these properties is the current lack of understanding of and control over the formation of epitaxial interdot bonds connecting the NCs within the assemblies. In this work we demonstrate successive ionic layer absorption and reaction (SILAR) to enhance the interdot bonding within the NC assembly. SILAR treatment improved the fraction of interdot bonds from 82% to 91% and increased their width from 3.1 to 4.0 nm. Absorption spectra and charge transport measurements indicate that the effect of postassembly growth on quantum confinement in this system depends on the composition of the SILAR shell material. Increased NC film conductance following SILAR processing indicates that building and strengthening interdot bonds lead to increased electronic coupling and doping in the assemblies. The postassembly film growth detailed here presents an opportunity to repair structural defects and to tailor the balance of quantum confinement and interdot coupling in epitaxially connected NC assemblies.

Decades of research focused on size and shape control of iron oxide nanoparticles have led to methods of synthesis that afford excellent control over physical size and shape but comparatively poor control over magnetic properties. Popular synthesis methods based on thermal decomposition of organometallic precursors in the absence of oxygen have yielded particles with mixed iron oxide phases, crystal defects, and poorer than expected magnetic properties, including the existence of a thick “magnetically dead layer” experimentally evidenced by a magnetic diameter significantly smaller than the physical diameter. Here, we show how single-crystalline iron oxide nanoparticles with few defects and similar physical and magetic diameter distributions can be obtained by introducing molecular oxygen as one of the reactive species in the thermal decomposition synthesis. This is achieved without the need for any postsynthesis oxidation or thermal annealing. These results address a significant challenge in the synthesis of nanoparticles with predictable magnetic properties and could lead to advances in applications of magnetic nanoparticles.

Incorporating oxides with radically different physical and chemical properties into heterostructures offers tantalizing possibilities to derive new functions and structures. Recently, we have fabricated freestanding 2D oxide membranes using the water-soluble perovskite Sr3Al2O6as a sacrificial buffer layer. Here, with atomic-resolution spectroscopic imaging, we observe that direct growth of oxide thin films on Sr3Al2O6can cause complete phase transformation of the buffer layer, rendering it water-insoluble. More importantly, we demonstrate that an ultrathin SrTiO3layer can be employed as an effective barrier to preserve Sr3Al2O6during subsequent growth, thus allowing its integration in a wider range of oxide heterostructures.

A single-phase multiferroic material is constructed, in which ferroelectricity and strong magnetic ordering are coupled near room temperature, enabling direct electric-field control of magnetism.

Epitaxial attachment of quantum dots into ordered superlattices enables the synthesis of quasi-two-dimensional materials that theoretically exhibit features such as Dirac cones and topological states, and have major potential for unprecedented optoelectronic devices. Initial studies found that disorder in these structures causes localization of electrons within a few lattice constants, and highlight the critical need for precise structural characterization and systematic assessment of the effects of disorder on transport. Here we fabricated superlattices with the quantum dots registered to within a single atomic bond length (limited by the polydispersity of the quantum dot building blocks), but missing a fraction (20%) of the epitaxial connections. Calculations of the electronic structure including the measured disorder account for the electron localization inferred from transport measurements. The calculations also show that improvement of the epitaxial connections will lead to completely delocalized electrons and may enable the observation of the remarkable properties predicted for these materials.

The Ruddlesden–Popper (An+1BnO3n+1) compounds are highly tunable materials whose functional properties can be dramatically impacted by their structural phase n. The negligible differences in formation energies for different ncan produce local structural variations arising from small stoichiometric deviations. Here, we present a Python analysis platform to detect, measure, and quantify the presence of different n-phases based on atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) images. We employ image phase analysis to identify horizontal Ruddlesden–Popper faults within the lattice images and quantify the local structure. Our semiautomated technique considers effects of finite projection thickness, limited fields of view, and lateral sampling rates. This method retains real-space distribution of layer variations allowing for spatial mapping of local n-phases to enable quantification of intergrowth occurrence and qualitative description of their distribution suitable for a wide range of layered materials.
