This work shows how the N 1s photoemission (PE) spectrum of self-associated melamine molecules in aqueous solution has been successfully rationalized using an integrated computational approach encompassing classical metadynamics simulations and quantum calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). The first approach allowed us to describe interacting melamine molecules in explicit waters and to identify dimeric configurations based on π–π and/or H-bonding interactions. Then, N 1s binding energies (BEs) and PE spectra were computed at the DFT level for all structures both in the gas phase and in an implicit solvent. While pure π-stacked dimers show gas-phase PE spectra almost identical to that of the monomer, those of the H-bonded dimers are sensibly affected by NH···NH or NH···NC interactions. Interestingly, the solvation suppresses all of the non-equivalences due to the H-bonds yielding similar PE spectra for all dimers, matching very well our measurements.

The creation of stable molecular monolayers on metallic surfaces is a fundamental challenge of surface chemistry. N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) were recently shown to form self-assembled monolayers that are significantly more stable than the traditional thiols on Au system. Here we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that the smallest cyclic carbene, cyclopropenylidene, binds even more strongly than NHCs to Au surfaces without altering the surface structure. We deposit bis(diisopropylamino)cyclopropenylidene (BAC) on Au(111) using the molecular adduct BAC–CO2as a precursor and determine the structure, geometry, and behavior of the surface-bound molecules through high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and scanning tunneling microscopy. Our experiments are supported by density functional theory calculations of the molecular binding energy of BAC on Au(111) and its electronic structure. Our work is the first demonstration of surface modification with a stable carbene other than NHC; more broadly, it drives further exploration of various carbenes on metal surfaces.

We investigate the early stages of the growth of zinc-phthalocyanine on Al(100) using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). Diffraction patterns show a (5 × 5) reconstruction, characteristic of flat-lying molecules forming a long-range-ordered structure with a square unit cell. The degree of ordering (i.e., the average domain size) is increased when the substrate is kept above 100 °C during the deposition. At low coverage (≤1 ML), a sizeable charge transfer from the substrate to the molecules is observed, indicating a strong interaction at the organic–inorganic interface. As a consequence of charge filling of ZnPc LUMO, a self-demetalation of the molecule occurs while the structure of the ligand remains mostly unaffected.

The role of additives and thermal treatment in the formation of donor–acceptor copolymer organic films of PFO–DBT (poly[2,7-(9,9-dioctylfluorene)-alt-4,7-bis(thiophen-2-yl)benzo-2,1,3-thiadiazole]) with increased transport properties is addressed by resonant Auger photoemission and core-hole clock spectroscopy, which allows an analysis of the competition between the inner shell core-hole lifetime and the motion of photoexcited electrons on a femtosecond time scale. From the branching of the competing core-hole decay channels, we study the delocalization dynamics of excited electrons over empty molecular orbitals. We find evidence of ultrafast charge-carrier transfer from specific orbitals (LUMO+1) and increased coupling in copolymer assemblies when a solvent additive (1,8 diiodooctane) is added and samples are post-treated with thermal annealing. Relative conformational energies and core-hole spectra were calculated by time-dependent density functional theory.

Stable organic radicals have potential applications for building organic spintronic devices. To fulfill this potential, the interface between organic radicals and metal electrodes must be well characterized. Here, through a combined effort that includes synthesis, scanning tunneling microscopy, X-ray spectroscopy, and single-molecule conductance measurements, we comprehensively probe the electronic interaction between gold metal electrodes and a benchtop stable radical—the Blatter radical. We find that despite its open-shell character and having a half-filled orbital close to the Fermi level, the radical is stable on a gold substrate under ultrahigh vacuum. We observe a Kondo resonance arising from the radical and spectroscopic signatures of its half-filled orbitals. By contrast, in solution-based single-molecule conductance measurements, the radical character is lost through oxidation with charge transfer occurring from the molecule to metal. Our experiments show that the stability of radical states can be very sensitive to the environment around the molecule.

The performance of devices from organic semiconductors is often governed by charge transfer phenomena at structurally and electronically complex interfaces, which remain challenging to access and study with excellent chemical and temporal resolution. Herein, we report the preparation and X-ray spectroscopic characterization of well-defined model organic–inorganic interfaces. We discover an unexpected trend for our systems' associated charge transfer times, and we rationalize this trend with density functional theory calculations. Our findings hold relevance for understanding interfacial charge transfer phenomena in a variety of organic, biological, and bioinspired systems.

We deposit azafullerene C59N•radicals in a vacuum on the Au(111) surface for layer thicknesses between 0.35 and 2.1 monolayers (ML). The layers are characterized using X-ray photoemission (XPS) and X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy, low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and by density functional calculations (DFT). The singly unoccupied C59N orbital (SUMO) has been identified in the N 1s NEXAFS/XPS spectra of C59N layers as a spectroscopic fingerprint of the molecular radical state. At low molecular coverages (up to 1 ML), films of monomeric C59N are stabilized with the nonbonded carbon orbital neighboring the nitrogen oriented toward the Au substrate, whereas in-plane intermolecular coupling into diamagnetic (C59N)2dimers takes over toward the completion of the second layer. By following the C59N•SUMO peak intensity with increasing molecular coverage, we identify an intermediate high-spin-density phase between 1 and 2 ML, where uncoupled C59N•monomers in the second layer with pronounced radical character are formed. We argue that the C59N•radical stabilization of this supramonolayer phase of monomers is achieved by suppressed coupling to the substrate. This results from molecular isolation on top of the passivating azafullerene contact layer, which can be explored for molecular radical state stabilization and positioning on solid substrates.

The self-assembly of the naphthylmethylamine molecules (NMA) on the Au(111) surface is investigated by a combined experimental and theoretical approach. Three well-defined phases are observed upon different thermal treatments at the monolayer stage. The role played by the methylamine termination is evidenced in both the molecule–molecule and molecule–substrate interactions. The autorecognition process of the amino groups is identified as the driving factor for the formation of a complex hydrogen bonding scheme in small molecular clusters, possibly acting also as a precursor of a denitrogenation condensation process induced by thermal annealing.

Electronic structure of 4-hydroxycyanobenzene in the gas phase, thick films, and single crystals has been investigated by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS). We have used resonant photoemission spectroscopy (RESPES) to identify the symmetry and atomic localization of the occupied and unoccupied molecular orbitals for the free molecule. Upon condensation into a thick film, we find XPS energy shifts in opposite directions for the oxygen and nitrogen core levels, consistent with the formation of an intermolecular hydrogen bond. This interaction is also accompanied by a significant spatial distortion of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital that is displaced from the nitrogen atom, as indicated by the RESPES measurements. Thick films and single crystals display the same dichroism in polarization dependent NEXAFS, indicating that the intermolecular hydrogen bonding also steers the molecular assembly into a preferred molecular orientation.

Charge transfer through noncovalent interactions is crucial to a variety of chemical phenomena. These interactions are often weak and nonspecific and can coexist, making it difficult to isolate the transfer efficiency of one type of bond versus another. Here, we show how core-hole clock spectroscopy can be used to measure charge transfer through noncovalent interactions. We study the model system 1,4-benzenediamine molecules bound on an Au surface through an Au–N donor–acceptor bond as these are known to provide a pathway for electronic conduction in molecular devices. We study different phases of the molecule/Au system and map charge delocalization times from carbon and nitrogen sites on the molecule. We show that charge delocalization across Au–N donor–acceptor bond occurs in less than 500 as. Furthermore, the Au–N bond also enhances delocalization times from neighboring carbon sites, demonstrating that fast charge transfer across a metal–organic interface does not require a covalently bonded system.

The in situ formation of prototypes of complex hybrid organic structures gives the opportunity to characterize their morphologic and spectroscopic properties, a mandatory step toward the development of more reliable and efficient organic devices. In this context, a proper functionalization of the substrate’s surface is required for the linkage of small molecules or proteins. We report here how thin films of cysteamine have been successfully assembled on Au(111) by evaporation in ultra high vacuum conditions. The molecular orientation has been investigated by means of X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Both monolayer and multilayered films of cysteamine have been characterized by means of high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy. A compact, homogeneous self-assembled monolayer has been obtained, which provides the functionalization of the surface with a −NH2linker. The investigation on the multilayer film revealed the presence of a zwitterionic cysteamine moiety.
