The issue of angular distributions of the products of photodissociation of diatomic molecules is reexamined on two aspects:  (1) the nature of the state that is prepared by excitation from a bound level into a continuum, and (2) a demonstration that a semiclassical connection between the J-derivative of the scattering phase shift and the classical deflection function leads to a recovery of the classical expression for correction of the angular distribution owing to finite rotation of the molecule during photodissociation. Higher-order quantum contributions to this correction also result from these observations.

The rate and extent of the exploration of the available phase space of a bound quantum mechanical system are shown to depend on the repulsion of energy eigenstates. Central to the argument is the Fourier transform relating the survival probability (in time) of an initially prepared nonstationary state and the (frequency) autocorrelation function of the excitation spectrum. Strong repulsion of states, as in the Wigner surmise, leads to a rapid dephasing of the initially coherently prepared state. The rate and extent of sampling of phase space depend not only on the spacing distribution but also on the intensity fluctuations. The rate of dephasing is equal to that inferred from the width of the spectral autocorrelation function.

The literature relative to the incidence and cause of death in shock therapy has been largely devoted to reports of individual cases. I have gathered as many of these as possible and have embodied the data in this analysis. In addition, material was obtained through nation-wide survey by means of a questionnaire, one page of which was related to insulin therapy and the other to metrazol therapy. The first item concerned the total number of patients treated. On the metrazol sheet the number of schizophrenic and the number of depressed patients treated were further particularized. The next inquiries concerned the number of deaths attributable either directly or indirectly to the treatment, the cause of death, whether or not an autopsy was performed and the autopsy report, if available.
