Chirp sub-bottom profilers (SBP) provide centi-to-decimetre resolution, seismic data with applications for various geophysical and geological purposes. To verify the field application of imaging of a buried target with a cost-effective and easy-to-apply pseudo-3D Chirp SBP survey, we explored the buried site of an ancient wooden shipwreck off the west coast of Korea before underwater excavations. The survey was conducted using a commercial 2D Chirp SBP system with a newly devised recording system that preserved the true polarity of the chirp signal. To produce high-resolution 3D Chirp SBP data from 2D Chirp SBP datasets recorded by the novel system, an optimal data processing sequence, consisting of a first phase of 2D data processing and a second phase of 3D data processing was designed. The first, 2D phase, included the estimation of a source sweep signature, cross-correlation, and deconvolution using an inverse filter. The resulting resolution of the 2D Chirp SBP data was better than that of the enveloped data provided by the commercial acquisition system. The second phase of 3D data processing included gathering 3D datasets, redistributing of ping positions, and static correction. To improve the consistency of the seismic events and reduce the repetitive corrections (swell, tidal, tie, and residual corrections), a static correction was based on multi-beam echo sounder data. The amplitude variation near the shipwreck was clearly apparent in the time slice from the final pseudo-3D Chirp SBP dataset with a bin size of 2.0 m (crossline) × 0.6 m (inline). Through 3D rendering, the buried ancient shipwreck with dimensions of 5 m (width) × 12 m (length) × 2 m (depth) was imaged successfully.

IMPORTANCE: Vital statistics are the primary source of data used to understand the mortality burden of dementia in the US, despite evidence that dementia is underreported on death certificates. Alternative estimates, drawing on population-based samples, are needed. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the percentage of deaths attributable to dementia in the US. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A prospective cohort study of the Health and Retirement Study of noninstitutionalized US individuals with baseline exposure assessment in 2000 and follow-up through 2009 was conducted. Data were analyzed from November 2018 to May 2020. The sample was drawn from 7489 adults aged 70 to 99 years interviewed directly or by proxy. Ninety participants with missing covariates or sample weights and 57 participants lost to follow-up were excluded. The final analytic sample included 7342 adults. EXPOSURE: Dementia and cognitive impairment without dementia (CIND) were identified at baseline using Health and Retirement Study self- or proxy-reported cognitive measures and the validated Langa-Weir score cutoff. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Hazard ratios relating dementia and CIND status to all-cause mortality were estimated using Cox proportional hazards regression models, accounting for covariates, and were used to calculate population-attributable fractions. Results were compared with information on cause of death from death certificates. RESULTS: Of the 7342 total sample, 4348 participants (60.3%) were women. At baseline, 4533 individuals (64.0%) were between ages 70 and 79 years, 2393 individuals (31.0%) were between 80 and 89 years, and 416 individuals (5.0%) were between 90 and 99 years; percentages were weighted. The percentage of deaths attributable to dementia was 13.6% (95% CI, 12.2%-15.0%) between 2000 and 2009. The mortality burden of dementia was significantly higher among non-Hispanic Black participants (24.7%; 95% CI, 17.3-31.4) than non-Hispanic White participants (12.2%; 95% CI, 10.7-13.6) and among adults with less than a high school education (16.2%; 95% CI, 13.2%-19.0%) compared with those with a college education (9.8%; 95% CI, 7.0%-12.5%). Underlying cause of death recorded on death certificates (5.0%; 95% CI, 4.3%-5.8%) underestimated the contribution of dementia to US mortality by a factor of 2.7. Incorporating deaths attributable to CIND revealed an even greater underestimation. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: The findings of this study suggest that the mortality burden associated with dementia is underestimated using vital statistics, especially when considering CIND in addition to dementia.

•Vaccine adoption, overall and early, is facilitated by higher education and income, influenza vaccination experience, and frequent social interaction with friends.•Those who resided in an area with higher shingles vaccination rates were more likely to receive the vaccine and if so, earlier.•Those with a more conscientious personality and whose care included other vaccines were more likely to get the shingles vaccine early.

Elevated inflammation and poor immune functioning are tied to worse cognitive health. Both processes are fundamental to aging and are strongly implicated in the development of age-related health outcomes, including cognitive status. However, results from prior studies evaluating links between indicators of inflammation and immune function and cognitive impairment have been inconsistent due to biomarker selection, sample selection, and cognitive outcome. Using the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), a nationally representative study of older adults in the United States, we assessed how indicators of inflammation (neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), albumin, CRP, IL6, IL10, IL-1Ra, sTNFR1, and TGFβ1) and immune functioning (CMV, CD4+TN/TM,and CD8+TN/TM) are associated with cognitive status. First, to examine the association between each biomarker and cognitive status, we tested whether markers of inflammation and immune functioning varied across cognitive status categories. We found that dementia and cognitive impairment without dementia (CIND) were associated with elevated inflammation and poorer immune functioning across biomarkers except for CD4+TN/TM. Next, we estimated multinomial logistic regression models to assess which biomarkers would continue to be associated with dementia and CIND, net of each other. In these models, albumin, cytokines, CMV, CD4+TN/TM,and CD8+TN/TMare associated with cognitive status. Because poor immune functioning and increased inflammation are associated with cognitive impairment, improving immune functioning and reducing inflammation may provide a mechanism for reducing ADRD risk in the population.

Intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) improves dose conformity and saves critical organs. IMRT is widely used in cases of head and neck, prostate, and brain cancer due to the close location of the targets to critical structures. However, because IMRT has a larger amount of radiation exposure than 3 dimensional-conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT), it has disadvantages such as increases in the low dose irradiation to normal tissues and in the accumulated dose for the whole volume due to leakage and transmission of the multi-leaf collimator (MLC). The increased accumulated dose and the larger low dose may increase the occurrence of secondary malignant neoplasms. For these reasons, the jaw-tracking function of the TrueBeam (Varian Medical Systems, Palo Alto, CA) was developed to reduce the leakage and the transmission dose of the MLC with linear accelerators. However, the change in the superficial dose has not been verified with a quantitative analysis of the dose reduction in a brain tumor. Therefore, in the present study, we intended to verify the clinical possibility of utilizing the jaw-tracking function for a brain tumor by comparing treatment plans and superficial doses. To accomplish this, we made three types of original treatment plans using Eclipse11 (Varian Medical Systems, Palo Alto, CA): 1) farther than 2 cm from the organs at risk (OAR); 2) within 2 cm of the OAR; and 3) intersecting with the OAR. Jaw-tracking treatment plans were also made with copies of the original treatment plan using Smart LMC Version 11.0.31 (Varian Medical Systems, Palo Alto, CA). A comparison between the original treatment plans and jaw-tracking treatment plans was performed using the difference of the mean dose and maximum dose to the OARs in cumulative Dose Volume Histogram (DVH). In addition, the dependencies of the effects of transmission and the scattering doses according to jaw motion were assessed through the difference in the surface doses. In the DVH comparison, a maximum dose difference of 0.4% was observed between the planning methods in the case of over 2 cm distance, and the maximum dose of 0.6% was obtained for within the 2 cm distance. For the case intersecting with the OAR, the maximum dose difference of 2.3% was achieved. According to these results, the differences in the mean doses and the maximum doses to the OARs ware larger when the OARs and the planning target volume (PTV) were closer. In addition, small differences in the surface dose measurements were observed. In the case of the inside field, the differences were under 2% of the prescription dose while the difference was under 0.1% in the case of the outside field. Therefore, treatment plans with the jaw-tracking function consistently affected the dose reduction for a brain tumor, and the clinical possibility could be verified as the surface dose was not increased.

Raphanus sativus(Cruciferaceae), commonly known as radish is widely available throughout the world. From antiquity it has been used in folk medicine as a natural drug against many toxicants. The present study was designed to evaluate the hepatoprotective activity of radish (Raphanus sativus) enzyme extract (REE) in vitroand in vivotest. The IC50values of REE in human liver derived HepG2 cells was over 5,000 μg/mlin tested maximum concentration. The effect of REE to protect tacrine-induced cytotoxicity in HepG2 cells was evaluated by MTT assay. REE showed their hepatoprotective activities on tacrine-induced cytotoxicity and the EC50value was 1,250 μg/ml. Silymarin, an antihepatotoxic agent used as a positive control exhibited 59.7% hepatoprotective activitiy at 100 μg/ml. Moreover, we tested the effect of REE on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver toxicity in rats. REE at dose of 50 and 100 mg/kg and silymarin at dose of 50 mg/kg were orally administered to CCl4-treated rats. The results showed that REE and silymarin significantly reduced the elevated levels of serum enzyme markers induced by CCl4. The biochemical data were supported by evaluation with liver histopathology. These findings suggest that REE, can significantly diminish hepatic damage by toxic agent such as tacrine or CCl4.

A system for measuring the gap in a proximity exposure tool of a plasma display panel (PDP) is developed that uses single or dual position-sensitive detectors (PSD’s). The resolution of the gap distance is 0.5 µm, with a capture range of 500 µm. Signal processing is simple and fast and easy because analogous PSD’s are used as the position sensors. One PSD is used to detect the position of the reference beam, which is reflected from the upper surface of the gap; the other PSD is used to detect the position of the signal beam, which is reflected from the lower surface of the gap. A charge-coupled-device sensor is also employed to monitor the reflected beams and the region of measurement. In the gap-measurement system that uses a single PSD, first the reference beam is incident upon the PSD and then the signal beam is incident upon the same PSD. Then the separation between the two beams is calculated from the position of the reference beam and from the average beam position.
