1. Palladium(II)-Catalyzed Synthesis of a Vinyl-Addition Ultrahigh-Molecular-Weight Polynorbornene Copolymer with an Entanglement Network for Enhanced Fracture Resistance

Abstract: The fracture resistance of a cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) was enhanced by incorporating an entanglement network. The vinyl-addition copolymerization of norbornene (NB) and 5-octyl-2-norbornene (OctNB) was achieved using a catalyst system composed of Pd(MesN═CHC6H4PPh2)Cl2(Mes = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2), triisobutylaluminum, and triphenylmethylium tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate. Despite exhibiting limited initiation efficiency, this catalyst system successfully produced vinyl-addition ultrahigh-molecular-weight poly(norbornene-random-5-octyl-2-norbornene) (VA-UHMWP(NB-r-OctNB)) with a number-average molecular weight (Mn) exceeding 103kDa. To assess the impact of the molecular weight, four VA-P(NB-r-OctNB)s with Mnvalues of 292–1120 kDa were synthesized by introducing 1-hexene as a chain transfer agent during polymerization. Tensile testing of the VA-P(NB-r-OctNB) films revealed an increase in tensile toughness, accompanied by an increase in elongation at break, up to an Mnvalue of 680 kDa. This discovery suggests that the entanglement network plays a crucial role in enhancing the fracture resistance of this COC, ultimately contributing to decoupling its stiffness and brittleness.

4. Enhanced thermal diffusion in the vertical direction of flexible polyimide composite films with magnetically alignable h-BN platelets viaferrofluids hybridization

Abstract: A facile approach is proposed to improve the anisotropic heat conduction of polyimide composite films containing hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), thermally conductive filler with high anisotropy, viasurface hybridization with ferrofluids as magnetic carrier source. The surfaces of the h-BNs were decorated with Fe3O4particles to control their alignment using magnetic field. The h-BNs with hydroxyl groups (f-BN) were mixed with ferrofluids and heated to 130 °C with stirring. A considerable amount of Fe3O4nanoparticles was attached to the surface of f-BNs, named mf-BNs. Flexible polyimide (PI) composite films were prepared by adding mf-BNs at 1–30 wt.% to investigate the anisotropic alignment of mf-BNs under magnetic field. The thru-plane thermal conductivity of the PI composite film with vertically aligned mf-BN of 30 wt.% is 6 times higher than that of the neat PI film, as increased from 0.212 to 1.246 W/m∙K. This result is attributed to the anisotropic h-BN particles coated with the magnetic fluid arranged within the PI matrix in the vertical direction by using a neodymium magnet with less than 150 mT. This can solve the thermal issues of next-generation electronics by speeding the vertical heat transfer, which can greatly contribute to the improvement of the device reliability.

5. Regional Control of Multistimuli-Responsive Structural Color-Switching Surfaces by a Micropatterned DNA-Hydrogel Assembly

Abstract: Structural colors have advantages compared with chemical pigments or dyes, such as iridescence, tunability, and unfading. Many studies have focused on developing the ability to switch ON/OFF the structural color; however, they often suffer from a simple and single stimulus, remaining structural colors, and target selectivity. Herein, we present regionally controlled multistimuli-responsive structural color switching surfaces. The key part is the utilization of a micropatterned DNA-hydrogel assembly on a single substrate. Each hydrogel network contains a unique type of stimuli-responsive DNA motifs as an additional cross-linker to exhibit swelling/deswelling via stimuli-responsive DNA interactions. The approach enables overcoming the existing limitations and selectively programming the DNA-hydrogel to a decrypted state (ON) and an encrypted state (OFF) in response to multiple stimuli. Furthermore, the transitions are reversible, providing cyclability. We envision the potential of our method for diverse applications, such as sensors or anticounterfeiting, requiring multistimuli-responsive structural color switching surfaces.

6. Synthesis of Vinyl-Addition Polynorbornene Copolymers Bearing Pendant n-Alkyl Chains and Systematic Investigation of Their Properties

Abstract: The synthesis of vinyl-addition polynorbornene copolymers bearing pendant n-alkyl chains (octyl, decyl, and dodecyl groups) and systematic investigation of their properties are reported. Vinyl-addition polymerization using Pd2(dba)3/PCy3/Li[FABA] produces poly(norbornene-co-5-n-alkyl-2-norbornene)s, P(NB/NBCx) (xis the number of carbon atoms in the n-alkyl chain), with a high weight-average molecular weight (Mw) of 71.2–410.6 kDa, high yields of 68–87%, and a similar monomer content to the monomer feed ratio. The films of the resulting copolymers are successfully prepared by a solution-casting method. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of these films can be tuned from 91.7 to 192.4 °C depending on the length of the alkyl chain of NBCxand the NBCxcontent. The mechanical properties are controlled by these two parameters as well. The change from brittle to ductile properties is observed with the increasing NBCxcontent of P(NB/NBCx) films, where the increase in the length of the alkyl chain of NBCxincreases the value of the strain at break, accompanied by a decrease in strength. The wide-angle X-ray scattering analysis provides information on nanostructure–property relationships in copolymers. All P(NB/NBCx) films display a high transmittance of more than 85% in the visible-light range.

7. Efficient CO2utilization and sustainable energy conversion viaZn–CO2batteries using gaseous CO2

Abstract: Rechargeable aqueous Zn–CO2battery is a promising technology that combines energy storage and CO2utilization to meet the needs of sustainable and eco–friendly energy. However, the practical application of this technology is hindered by factors such as the low current density, low Faradaic efficiency of value–added products, high overpotential, and limited cycles. Cathode catalysts, which are crucial components, significantly influence the performance of the system. There have been several updated publications on cathode materials for aqueous Zn–CO2batteries, but there are few reports of high–performance Zn–CO2batteries. Herein, a new system for achieving high performance by injecting gas–phase CO2was reported. Unlike conventional Zn–CO2batteries, the problem of low CO2solubility was overcome by injecting gaseous CO2. The designed Zn–gaseous CO2battery, powered by Ag or Au catalysts, achieved that Faradaic efficiencies of CO were 92.72 % and 89.56 % at 4 mA/cm2, respectively. The maximum power density of 5.52 mW/cm2and 7.89 mW/cm2for Ag and Au catalysts, respectively, were obtained, which were much larger than the power density of conventional aqueous Zn–CO2batteries. In addition, using X–ray diffraction, ex–situmonitoring of the reaction characterizations on Ag and Au cathodes was carried out and the durability of 600 min was achieved, when using Au cathode. These results offer a practical way to design a Zn–CO2battery for high-performance energy storage and CO2utilization.

8. Multi-functional locomotion of collectively assembled shape-reconfigurable electronics

Abstract: Beyond typical flexible electronics, stimuli-responsive shape-reconfigurable electronics are great candidates for the next-generation miniaturized electronics, carrying out complex missions by morphing their geometry and transferring their bodies to the desired positions. To achieve shape-reconfigurable electronics, it is essential to give shape-programmability as well as high electrical conductivity for polymeric materials. However, this is difficult to achieve due to a trade-off relationship between the shape-reconfigurability and the electrical conductivity of polymer composites that embed conductive fillers. Herein, we introduced highly conductive and physical intelligence-encoded polymeric composites based on MXene/liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) bilayer (MLB), for shape-reconfigurable electronics performing on-demand and reversible 3D morphing and locomotion. The MLB demonstrated remarkable photo-/electro-thermally driven bending and twisting performance under near-infrared (NIR) light with 0.4 W cm−2and voltage application of 3.5 V without delamination due to both high photothermal conversion efficiency and electrical conductivity of ∼5,300 S cm−1. The MLB also proved structural durability after 1,000 cycles of bending originating from the stable interface induced by hydrogen bonding between MXene and LCE. Importantly, macroscopic collective assembly of the MLBs enabled dynamic locomotion inspired by nature. Collectively assembled MLBs demonstrated crawling, rotating, jumping, and sling-shooting by engineering the symmetricity of assembled structure and introducing snap-through instability.

Abstract: Three different glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists reduce cardiovascular outcomes in people with type 2 diabetes at high cardiovascular risk with high glycated haemoglobin A1c(HbA1c) concentrations. We assessed the effect of the GLP-1 receptor agonist dulaglutide on major adverse cardiovascular events when added to the existing antihyperglycaemic regimens of individuals with type 2 diabetes with and without previous cardiovascular disease and a wide range of glycaemic control.

11. Development of a Zn-Mn aqueous redox-flow battery operable at 2.4 V of discharging potential in a hybrid cell with an Ag-decorated carbon-felt electrode

Abstract: The Zn-Mn redox pair has great potential as a next-generation redox flow battery (RFB) because of its economic strength and capability to conduct safe reactions. However, because of the potential window restriction of the aqueous system, maximizing the performance of the system with a Zn-Mn redox pair is difficult. Hence, in this study, a hybrid RFB cell with three-electrolyte chambers is designed to expand the potential window using different electrolytes with varying pH values in the anolyte and catholyte. In the three-electrolyte chamber cell, a buffer electrolyte is utilized between the anolyte and catholyte, and the system exhibits a high discharge potential of approximately 2.4 V. Despite this success, stability problems still arise because of MnO2precipitation in the electrolyte. Therefore, the cathode is further modified using an Ag-based metal-organic framework (MOF). The stability of the carbon-felt electrode is also improved when the cathode is decorated with an Ag electrocatalyst. The potential plateau during the discharge sustained at 2.3–2.4 V, while the cell is maintained over 550 mAh/gMnO₂of specific capacity. Accordingly, the system design with a three-electrolyte chamber cell and cathode modification can enable the Zn-Mn redox reaction to provide stable and superior cell performance during charge-discharge cycles.

Abstract: Recent developments in genome sequencing have expanded the knowledge of genetic factors associated with late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Among them, genetic variant ε4 of the APOEgene (APOE4) confers the greatest disease risk. Dysregulated glucose metabolism is an early pathological feature of AD. Using isogenic ApoE3 and ApoE4 astrocytes derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells, we find that ApoE4 increases glycolytic activity but impairs mitochondrial respiration in astrocytes. Ultrastructural and autophagy flux analyses show that ApoE4-induced cholesterol accumulation impairs lysosome-dependent removal of damaged mitochondria. Acute treatment with cholesterol-depleting agents restores autophagic activity, mitochondrial dynamics, and associated proteomes, and extended treatment rescues mitochondrial respiration in ApoE4 astrocytes. Taken together, our study provides a direct link between ApoE4-induced lysosomal cholesterol accumulation and abnormal oxidative phosphorylation.

13. Anisotropy-Driven High Thermal Conductivity in Stretchable Poly(vinyl alcohol)/Hexagonal Boron Nitride Nanohybrid Films

Abstract: Controlling the anisotropy of two-dimensional materials with orientation-dependent heat transfer characteristics is a possible solution to resolve severe thermal issues in future electronic devices. We demonstrate a dramatic enhancement in the in-plane thermal conductivity of stretchable poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanohybrid films containing small amounts (below 10 wt %) of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanoplatelets. The h-BN nanoplatelets were homogeneously dispersed in the PVA polymer solution by ultrasonication without additional surface modification. The mixture was used to prepare thermally conductive nanocomposite films. The in-plane thermal conductivity of the resulting PVA/h-BN nanocomposite films increased to 6.4 W/mK when the strain was increased from 0 to 100% in the horizontal direction. More specifically, the thermal conductivity of a PVA/h-BN composite film with 10 wt % filler loading can be improved by up to 32 times as compared to pristine PVA. This outstanding thermal conductivity value is significantly larger than that of materials currently used in in-plane thermal management systems. This result is attributed to the anisotropic alignment of h-BN particles in the PVA chain matrix during stretching, enhancing phonon conductive paths and hence improving the thermal conductivity and thermal properties of PVA/h-BN nanocomposite films. These polymer nanocomposites have low cost as the amount of expensive conductive fillers is reduced and can be potentially used as high-performance materials for thermal management systems such as heat sink and thermal interface materials, for future electronic and electrical devices.

14. Strong Hydrophobic Coating by Conducting a New Hierarchical Architecture

Abstract: While the hydrophobicity for a self-cleaning surface is feasibly obtained via rational designs of nanostructured materials,1-2the longevity of coatings due to the rapid function loss and weak interface bonding and the scalability due to the limited size are not on a solid footing.3In this article, we report the synthesis of flexible self-cleaning coating with improved mechanical and chemical stability on the basis of a new hierarchical architecture, which comprises functionalized epoxy (EP) resins and industrially available activated carbons. In parallel, a self-cleaning coating with high transparency can be obtained by replacing with oxide particles, which further expands the application fields. The strong bonding force from alkene CH3–C–CH3and phenyl groups in bisphenol A diglycidyl ether contributes to high rigidity, high toughness, and high-temperature tolerance while the ether linkages lead to high chemical resistance.4A greatly enhanced adhesion to substrates originates from the preferable interface ring-opening reaction of highly reactive ethylene oxide C2H4O on EP and amine groups on curing agents. Superhydrophobicity is ascribed to the interaction among hydrophobic groups on “grafted” heptadecafluorodecyl acrylate and functionalized particles. The impressive hydrophobic and mechanical properties open an avenue for a reliable self-cleaning coating in commercial products.

15. The development of a gas-feeding CO2fuel cell using direct hydrazine oxidation reaction

Abstract: Electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction has attracted attention for converting CO2into value-added products at room temperature. Conventional electrochemical CO2reduction methods require external energy because of the high overpotential of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). To overcome the limitation of the OER, we propose a gaseous CO2reduction system that uses an aqueous hydrazine (N2H4) oxidation reaction. In this study, the N2H4-CO2fuel cell is proposed for the simultaneous generation of electricity with CO2conversion. During the operation of the aqueous N2H4/gas-feeding CO2fuel cell, a power density of 20.31 mW/cm2was obtained and 49.20 % of CO2was converted to CO at the Ag cathode. We also evaluated the correlation between the flow rate of the anolyte and the hydrophobicity of the Ag cathode in terms of cell performance.

Abstract: Stress causes changes in neurotransmission in the brain, thereby influencing stress-induced behaviors. However, it is unclear how neurotransmission systems orchestrate stress responses at the molecular and cellular levels. Transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1), a non-selective cation channel involved mainly in pain sensation, affects mood and neuroplasticity in the brain, where its role is poorly understood. Here, we show that Trpv1-deficient (Trpv1−/−) mice are more stress resilient than control mice after chronic unpredictable stress. We also found that glucocorticoid receptor (GR)-mediated histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC) 2 expression and activity are reduced in the Trpv1−/−mice and that HDAC2-regulated, cell-cycle- and neuroplasticity-related molecules are altered. Hippocampal knockdown of TRPV1 had similar effects, and its behavioral effects were blocked by HDAC2 overexpression. Collectively, our findings indicate that HDAC2 is a molecular link between TRPV1 activity and stress responses.

Abstract: Linear nevus sebaceous syndrome (LNSS) is a neurocutaneous disorder caused by somatic gain-of-function mutations in KRASor HRAS. LNSS brains have neurodevelopmental defects, including cerebral defects and epilepsy; however, its pathological mechanism and potentials for treatment are largely unclear. We show that introduction of KRASG12Vin the developing mouse cortex results in subcortical nodular heterotopia and enhanced excitability, recapitulating major pathological manifestations of LNSS. Moreover, we show that decreased firing frequency of inhibitory neurons without KRASG12Vexpression leads to disrupted excitation and inhibition balance. Transcriptional profiling after destabilization domain-mediated clearance of KRASG12Vin human neural progenitors and differentiating neurons identifies reversible functional networks underlying LNSS. Neurons expressing KRASG12Vshow molecular changes associated with delayed neuronal maturation, most of which are restored by KRASG12Vclearance. These findings provide insights into the molecular networks underlying the reversibility of some of the neuropathologies observed in LNSS caused by dysregulation of the RAS pathway.

Abstract: Herein, we developed novel silicon–carbon–nitrogen (SiCN) composites synthesized by pyrolyzing silsesquiazane polymer as an anode material for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Among variable pyrolysis temperatures of 700 °C, 1000 °C and 1300 °C, the SiCN composites prepared at 1000 °C showed the highest capacity with outstanding battery cycle life by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Such good battery and electrochemical performances should be attributed to a proper ratio of carbon and nitrogen or oxygen in the SiCN composites. Furthermore, our SiCN electrode possessed better lithium ion conductivity than pure silicon nanoparticles. 20. The effect of total maximum daily loads (TMDL) program on water quality improvement in the Geum River basin, Korea

Abstract: AbstractIn this study, an analysis using nonparametric statistical methods was conducted to assess the effect of Korean total maximum daily load (TMDL) program on the improvement of water quality in the Geum River basin, Korea. The result of analyzing the trend of long-term BOD change from 2003 to 2012 by seasonal Mann–Kendall test showed that there was no significant change (GR-1, GS-1, MH-1) or a trend of increase (GR-2) in “water quality improvement plan area,” whereas a trend of decrease was observed in “implementation plan area” (GR-3, GR-4, GR-5, GS-2, MS-2). The period of TMDL implementation was divided into four time sections, and the BOD in each time section was compared with the others using the Kruskal–Wallis test. Compared with pre-TMDL stage, the effect of water quality improvement did not appear in the early first stage but appeared first in the tributaries, Gap Stream (GS-2) and Miho Stream (MS-2) in the late first stage of TMDL. At the mainstream sites (GR-3, GR-4, GR-5), the effect of water quality improvement appeared only in the second stage. In conclusion, the TMDL program is considered to have contributed to improving water quality in the “implementation plan area” and strict management is considered necessary to achieve continuous improvement in water quality also in later stages of TMDL implementation.

21. The critical contribution of unzipped graphene nanoribbons to scalable silicon–carbon fiber anodes in rechargeable Li-ion batteries

Abstract: We have incorporated graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) which are unzipped from multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) into silicon–carbon (Si/C) nanofibers, not only to reinforce hybrid Si/C fibers, but also to increase the electrical conductivity and charge transport capability of fibers. We demonstrated that GNRs are promising components for improving the rechargeable Li-ion battery performance due to their unique nanostructures and properties. Water based electrospinning, an easily scalable and environmentally benign process, was utilized to fabricate GNR/Si/C fibers. The resulting fibers exhibited a high reversible capacity of more than 1800mAh/g at 0.5C, and an excellent performance of 1400mAh/g with no capacity fading at a charge/discharge rate of 1C. This outstanding performance should be attributed to the enhanced charge and mass transfer ability of fibers by incorporation of ultrathin, flexible, conductive, and high aspect ratio GNRs. Electrodes made with GNR/Si/C fibers are more durable than ones with Si/C fibers, and do not exhibit dramatic volume and morphology changes after cycling. Moreover, GNR/Si/C fiber anodes were tested in a full-cell configuration where they displayed a steady gravimetric capacity of ca. 1400mAh/ganodefor 25 cycles.

22. Transient rheological behavior of natural polysaccharide xanthan gum solutions in start-up shear flow fields: An experimental study using a strain-controlled rheometer

Abstract: The objective of the present study is to experimentally investigate the transient rheological behavior of concentrated xanthan gum solutions in start-up shear flow fields. Using a strain-controlled rheometer, a number of constant shear rates were suddenly imposed to aqueous xanthan gum solutions with different concentrations and the resultant shear stress responses were measured with time. The main findings obtained from this study can be summarized as follows: (1) For all shear rates imposed, however low it may be, the shear stress is rapidly increased with time (stress overshoot) upon inception of steady shear flow before passing through the maximum stress value and then gradually decreased with time (stress decay) until reaching a steady state flow. (2) As the imposed shear rate is increased, a more pronounced stress overshoot takes place and the maximum stress value becomes larger, whereas both times at which the maximum stress is observed and needed to reach a steady state flow are shortened. (3) The maximum shear stress is linearly increased with shear rate in a double logarithmic scale and becomes larger with increasing concentration at equal shear rates. In addition, the time at which the maximum stress occurs exhibits a linear relationship with the inverse of shear rate in a double logarithmic scale for all xanthan gum solutions, regardless of their concentrations. (4) The shear stress is sharply increased with an increase in strain until reaching the maximum stress at small range of deformations. The maximum stress is observed at similar strain values, irrespective of the imposed shear rates lower than 10 1/s. (5) The Bird-Leider model can be successfully used with regard to quantitatively predicting the transient behavior of concentrated xanthan gum solutions. However, this model has a fatal weakness in terms of describing a decrease in shear stress (stress decay).

24. Implementation of the effluent limitations based on the best practicable control technology for the petroleum refining industry in Korea

Abstract: The effluent limitations of wastewaters discharged from various industrial facilities are based on uniform regulatory criteria in Korea. However, an individual effluent limitation on each effluent discharging industry is widely applicable for regulation of industrial wastewater in the USA and European Union (EU). The main objectives of this study were; (1) to suggest the method and procedure for establishing effluent limitations for the petroleum refining facilities on the basis of treatment technology to implement the most appropriate effluent limitations reflecting wastewater characteristics and the level of treatment technologies and (2) to estimate the effluent limitations based on the Best Practicable Control Technology (BPT) currently available. To decide an individual effluent limitation, Technology-Based Effluent Limitation (TBEL) was derived for the petroleum refining industry based on BPT in this study. It was suggested that effluent limitations were BOD55.0 mg/L, CODMn11.0 mg/L, SS 4.0 mg/L, TN 7.0 mg/L, and TP 0.3 mg/L and BPT for the petroleum refining facilities in Korea was oil separation, coagulation and floatation, activated sludge treatment, and sand filter (or activate carbon filter). In order to implement new effluent limitations and BPT suggested in this study, institutional complements of separate effluent limitations for individual industrial sectors are urgently required in Korea.

25. Durability Evaluation of Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC) at High Temperature

Abstract: Thermal barrier coating (TBC) which protects the gas turbine from high temperature is damaged by repeated thermal fatigue [1,2]. Generally, damage of top coating of thermal barrier coating is resulted in damage to the entire gas turbine. Thus, the durability of the thermal barrier coating should be evaluated to protect the gas turbine from damage. In general, the major cause of delamination in the top coating is the thermal stress at its interface according to the change in temperature [. In this research, parallel stress at the top coating interface (S11) was verified as the major cause of delamination by finite element analysis. In order to evaluate the durability of the TBC, we need information about the parallel strength at the interface, but it is difficult to measure. Furthermore, we verified the relationship between the stress perpendicular to the interface (S22) and the stress parallel to the interface (S11) by finite element analysis. The durability of the thermal barrier coating was evaluated by comparison of the results of the bond strength test of Kim et al. with the results of the finite element analysis of this research.

26. Shape- and Composition-Sensitive Activity of Pt and PtAu Catalysts for Formic Acid Electrooxidation

Abstract: In this work, we have probed the shape- and composition-dependent activities of Pt and PtAu catalysts for formic acid electrooxidation. Pt-based hollow nanostructures such as Pt hollow nanospheres (Pt HNSs), Pt nanotubes (Pt NTs), and PtAu alloy nanotubes (PtAu NTs) with controlled Pt:Au compositions are successfully prepared via a galvanic replacement process using sacrificial Ag templates. The physicochemical properties of these Pt and PtAu catalysts are confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques. The electrochemical activities of these hollow structured catalysts are compared for formic acid oxidation by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry methods. Relative to the commercial Pt black and Pt/C nanoparticle catalysts, the hollow nanostructured Pt materials (Pt HNS, Pt NT) exhibit enhanced catalytic activities due to structural effects. Moreover, the bimetallic PtAu NT series shows improved catalytic activities over the monometallic Pt catalysts due to compositional effects. The present study demonstrates that the catalytic activity and the extent of surface poisoning are strongly dependent on both the structural and compositional variations of the nanostructured electrocatalysts, as shown by a systemically prepared series of nanostructured catalysts for formic acid oxidation.

27. Retinoid X receptor acts as a negative regulator in Nurr1-induced dopaminergic differentiation in rat neural precursor cells

Abstract: To investigate the role of retinoid X receptor (RXR)–Nurr1 heterodimers in tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) expression, we observed retrovirus-induced RXR–Nurr1 heterodimer interactions with, and transactivation of, the TH promoter region in cultured rat embryonic neural precursor cells. Interestingly, forced expression of RXR with Nurr1 remarkably reduced Nurr1 activity in TH dopaminergic neuron generation and significantly down-regulated TH promoter activity. These regulatory activities were altered in both Nurr1dim−and RXRdim−that disrupted dimeric binding, verifying that the Nurr1–RXR heterodimer represses TH promoter activity. Therefore, a plausible explanation for the inhibitory role of RXR in Nurr1-induced TH expression is that RXR differentially affects an inhibitory element of the TH promoter.

28. Development of an automatic vegetable bundling machine using thermal bonding

Abstract: Abstract: An automatic vegetable bundling mechanism that uses thermal bonding is proposed. The proposed mechanism consists of three modules for reasonable manufacturing. The design specifications were determined by a bundling mechanism that was mechanically optimized, and a prototype of the automatic bundling machine was manufactured. A field test was carried out to verify the performance of the prototype on a vegetable farm. The machine showed an efficiency of about 3.6 times that by manual work. This automatic vegetable bundling machine has already been approved as an agricultural machine and will be commercialized soon.

Abstract: To improve the water quality of the four major rivers in Korea, Ministry of Environment of Korea (MOE) has introduced the Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) management system since 2002 and BOD was selected as one of the target materials during the first period (2004–2010). For an effective watershed management, it is necessary to have one or more quantitative measures that can be used to evaluate the relationship between pollutant sources and their impacts on water quality. Such measurable quantities are termed water quality indicators. Once an indicator is selected, target values for that indicator must be established to distinguish between the impaired and unimpaired state of the water-body. Various factors such as available data, application, management conditions and cost will be considered for the selection of an appropriate watershed management indicator. This paper introduces various factors required for choosing target water quality indicators and establishes reasonable target values during the second TMDLs period (2010–2015).

Abstract: A series of bis(β-ketoimino)nickel(II) complexes with p-substituted N-phenyl groups, Ni[CH3C(O)CHC(NPhR)CH3]2(Ni1: R = −OCH3; Ni2: R = −CH3; Ni3: R = −CF3), were synthesized, and their general coordination geometry was elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of Ni3. These complexes were paired with tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane (B(C6F5)3) to catalyze the vinyl addition copolymerization of norbornene (NB) and methyl 5-norbornene-2-carboxylate (NBE). All the catalyst systems exhibited high catalytic activities (>105gpolymermolNi–1h–1) at NBE feed contents of up to 50 mol %, resulting in the production of copolymers with high molecular weights (Mw= 135–355 kg mol–1, Đ= 1.78–2.12). In addition, the content of polar ester groups was precisely controlled by the feed ratio of the monomers. For Ni3, two monomer reactivity ratios were found to be close to unity (Fineman–Ross method: rNB= 0.951, rNBE= 0.903; Kelen–Tüdös method: rNB= 1.15, rNBE= 0.978). Since the copolymerization behaviors were revealed to be independent of the electronegativity of p-substituent, all the catalyst systems of Ni1–Ni3/B(C6F5)3were considered to serve the random copolymerization of NB and NBE. The resulting poly(norbornene-random-methyl 5-norbornene-2-carboxylate)s exhibited the dielectric and surface properties well tunable by compositional modulation.

31. Printable Self-Activated Liquid Metal Stretchable Conductors from Polyvinylpyrrolidone-Functionalized Eutectic Gallium Indium Composites

Abstract: Stretchable electronic circuits are critical in a variety of next-generation electronics applications, including soft robots, wearable technologies, and biomedical applications. To date, printable composite conductors comprising various types of conductive fillers have been suggested to achieve high electrical conductance and excellent stretchability. Among them, liquid metal particles have been considered as a viable candidate filler that can meet the necessary prerequisites. However, a mechanical activation process is needed to generate interconnected liquid channels inside elastomeric polymers. In this study, we have developed a chemical strategy of surface-functionalizing liquid metal particles to eliminate the necessity of additional mechanical activation processes. We found that the characteristic conformations of the polyvinylpyrrolidone surrounding eutectic gallium indium particles are highly dependent on the molecular weight of polyvinylpyrrolidone. By virtue of the specific chemical roles of polyvinylpyrrolidone, the as-printed composite layers are highly conductive and stretchable, exhibiting an electrical conductivity approaching 8372 S/cm at 100% strain and an invariant resistance change of 0.92 even at 75% strain after a 60,000 cycle test. The results demonstrate that the self-activated liquid metal-based composite conductors are applicable to traditional stretchable electronics, healable stretchable electronics, and shape-morphable applications.

32. Submerged Culture of Phellinus linteusfor Mass Production of Polysaccharides

Abstract: In order to increase the mycelial production of Phellinus linteus, which exhibits potent anticancer activity, some ingredients of the medium used to culture P. linteuswere investigated. The optimal medium composition for the production of Phellinus linteuswas determined to be as follows: fructose, 40 g/l; yeast extract, 20 g/l; K2HPO4, 0.46 g/l; KH2PO4, 1.00 g/l; MgSO4·7H2O, 0.50 g/l; FeCl2·62O, 0.01 g/l; MnCl2·4H2O, 0.036 g/l; ZnCl2, 0.03 g/l; and CuSO4·7H2O, 0.005 g/l. The optimal culture conditions were determined to be as follows: temperature, 28°C; initial pH, 5.5; aeration, 0.6 vvm; and agitation, 100 rpm, respectively. Under optimal composition and conditions, the maximum mycelial biomass achieved in a 5 ljar fermentor was 29.9 g/l.

35. Microwave‐Irradiated Copolymerization of Styrene and Butyl Acrylate

Abstract: The emulsion copolymerization of butyl acrylate and styrene in microwave irradiated condition was investigated. The microwave irradiated condition afforded the enhanced conversion rate at high feeding contents of butyl acrylate monomer feeding and the relative increase of butyl acrylate composition in copolymer com pared with the conventional condition as an water bath heating. The reactivity ratio was calculated from Finemann‐Ross plot, and showed difference between two methods that increased reactivity ratio of butyl acrylate was obtained in microwave irradiated condition. The morphology of copolymer was observed by microscopy, then it was founded that the size of spherical polymer particles in microwave irradiated condition showed more regular than that in conventional heating condition.

36. Phospholipase D1 as a Key Enzyme for Decidualization in Human Endometrial Stromal Cells1

Abstract: Using primary cell cultures of human endometrial stromal cells (ES cells), we investigated the role of phospholipase D (PLD) in 8-Br-cAMP-induced decidualization, which involves morphological and biological differentiation processes. When treated with 0.5 mM 8-Br-cAMP for 12 days, ES cells were transformed into a decidualized morphology and produced significant amounts of prolactin (PRL) and insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 1 (IGFBP1). Simultaneously, the activity and expression levels of PLD1 increased. In addition, removal of 8-Br-cAMP from decidualized ES cells restored the undifferentiated state, and this was accompanied by decreases in PLD1 promoter activity and PLD1 expression. Overexpression of dominant negative (DN)-PLD1inhibited the morphological changes induced by 0.5 mM 8-Br-cAMP, whereas PLD1 overexpression induced morphological changes in the absence of 0.5 mM 8-Br-cAMP treatment. Moreover, knockdown of PLD1 by siRNA and blockage of PLD by treatment with 0.3% 1-butanol decreased PRL/IGFBP1mRNA expression, whereas PLD1overexpression increased PRL/IGFBP1mRNA expression. Treatment of ES cells with phosphatidic acid (PA) for 3 days induced PRLmRNA expression and morphological changes, which implies that PA is an end-product of PLD activation-induced decidualization. In addition, pretreatment of ES cells with mepacrine decreased PRL/IGFBP1expression and inhibited morphological change, whereas pretreatment with propranolol caused no changes, as compared to cAMP-treated cells, which suggests that PA induces decidualization through phospholipase A2 (PLA2G1B). Taken together, these results suggest that PLD1 regulates 8-Br-cAMP-induced decidualization through PLA2G1B, and that PLD1 upregulation is essential for the decidualization of ES cells.

37. Rheological Properties of Polystyrene‐Organophilic Layered Silicate Nanocomposites

Abstract: A series of nanocomposites based on polystyrene (PS) and organophilic layered silicates (OLS) were prepared by solution blending method using organophilically modified silicate with ammonium salt of poly(styrene‐ran‐(4‐vinylbenzyl chloride)). Two different types of base layered silicate were used for the preparation of the nanocomposites: sodium montmorillonite (Na‐MMT) and synthetic smectite (SWN). The morphology and thermal stability of the PS/OLS nanocomposites were characterized by TEM and TGA. The rheological properties of the nanocomposites were investigated using a stress‐controlled rotational rheometer under small amplitude oscillation and steady transient shear in their melt state. In addition, the effects of the contents and aspect ratio of OLS on the melt rheological properties were investigated.

38. Antitumor and Antioxidant Activities of the Extracts from Fruiting Body of Phellinus linteus

Abstract: Fruiting bodies of Phellinus linteuswere extracted by hot water and alkali methods. Sugar contents of PL-H (hot water extract) and PL-A (alkali water extract) were 81.1%, 37.4% and protein contents were 6.2%, 21.8%, respectively. Amino acid pattern showed that two extracts contained large amount of aspartic acid and alanine. Two extracts showed characteristic IR absorption pattern for glycosidie bond at 890 cm−1. PL-H was divided two fractions by gel filtration chromatography and the molecular weights of each fraction were estimated to be about 10 kD and 225 kD), respectively and also PL-A was estimated 10 kD. Two extracts showed strong antitumor, immunomodulating and antioxidant activities, and were compared with commercialized glycopcptidc antieaneer drugs.

Abstract: We present the BER analysis of antenna array (AA) receiver in reverse-link asynchronous multipath Rician channels and analyze the performance of an improved AA system which applies a reverse-link synchronous transmission technique (RLSTT) in order to effectively make a better estimation of covariance matrices at a beamformer-RAKE receiver. In this work, we provide a comprehensive analysis of user capacity which reflects several important factors such as the ratio of the specular component power to the Rayleigh fading power, the shape of multipath intensity profile, and the number of antennas. Theoretical analysis demonstrates that for the case of a strong specular path's power or for a high decay factor, the employment of RLSTT along with AA has the potential of improving the achievable capacity by an order of magnitude.

Abstract: The major house-dust mite allergen, Der f 2, stimulates the phospholipase D (PLD) in T lymphocytes from Dermatophagoides farinae specific allergic individuals. PLD activity increased more than two-fold in T cells from allergic patients compared with those cells from normal controls with maximal responses within 30 min after exposure of Der f 2. A well-known PLD activator PKC-a was found to be translocated to membrane from cytosol in Der f 2-treated T cells from Dermatophagoides farinae specific allergic individuals. Down-regulation of PKC-a with phorbol myristate acetate pretreatment for 24 h abolished Der f 2-induced PLD activation. Ro 320432, PKC inhibitor also reduced the effects of Der f 2-induced PLD activation suggesting that PKC-a acts as upstream activator of PLD in Der f 2-treated T cells. Taken together, the present data suggest that Der f 2 can stimulate PLD activity through the PKC-a activation in T cells from Dermatophagoides farinae allergic individuals

Abstract: The gastric inflammatory response provoked by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) consists of infiltrations by neutrophils, lymphocytes, and macrophages, resulting in varying degrees of epithelial cell damage. H. pylori-associated inflammation not only activates various oxidant-producing enzymes such as NADPH oxidase and inducible nitric oxide synthase, but also lowers the antioxidant ascorbic acid in the stomach. Reactive oxygen metabolites and nitrogen metabolites generated by these enzymes react with each other to generate new or more potent reactive species. The specific types of cellular damage resulting from reactive oxygen metabolites include lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation, and oxidative DNA damage. All of these oxidative products can result in biochemical changes leading to cancer. A positive association has been demonstrated between H. pylori infection and gastric adenocarcinoma with increased oxidative stress. Therefore, appropriate treatment to reduce oxidative stress would be expected to prevent subsequent gastric carcinogenesis through lessening of H. pylori-associated inflammation. This review will provide evidence that antiinflammatory regimens can decrease the development of tumors and the amelioration of gastric inflammation might lead to chemoprevention strategies by the attenuation of oxidative stress.

42. Influence of terminal electrodes on LC resonance frequencies in glass-coated Co83.2B3.3Si15.9Mn7.6 microwires

Abstract: A new super-giant magnetoresonance effect was found in LC resonators consisting of a glass-coated microwire with capacitive terminal electrodes. The changes of resonance frequencies were examined as a function of the electrode dimensions in amorphous Co83.2B3.3Si5.9Mn7.6 microwires. The widths of two capacitive electrodes at the end of the microwire were varied from 3 to 6 mm, and the gap lengths between the electrodes were also varied from 6 to 9 mm. The shape of the impedance curves as a function of a dc magnetic field changed dramatically near the LC resonance frequency. The phase angle was also strongly dependent on this field. The sudden change of impedance by as much as 6400% with a change of phase angle as large as 180° is a new phenomenon, which is evidence for the occurrence of the magnetoresonance at a given intensity of the external dc field. Abstract: A series of new polyimides containing alicyclic units and alkyloxy side chains were prepared from 9,10-dialkyloxy-1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydro-2,3,6,7-anthracenetetracarboxylic 2,3:6,7-dianhydrides and various aromatic diamines. Their physical properties and structures were investigated. Polymers were obtained with inherent viscosities of 0.240.53 dL/g. In comparison with the aromatic polyimides, most polymers were readily soluble in common organic solvent such as N-methylpyrrolidone and m-cresol. These polymers had glass-transition temperatures between 111 and 296 °C depending on the structure of the repeating unit and 10% weight-loss temperatures of 418477 °C in nitrogen. Wide-angle X-ray diffractometry for as-polymerized samples revealed very low crystallinity and layered structures, which were better developed in the polymers with longer side chains. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. All the polyimides were thermostable up to 475°C with 10% weight loss and in DSC thermograms the polymers exhibited T gs between 249 and 317°C.

Abstract: A 2.5-kilobase cDNA clone that encodes a 371-amino acid novel transcription factor was isolated from a human placenta cDNA library using a yeast one-hybrid system. The novelets-related transcription factor (ERT) showed a homology with the ETS DNA-binding domain. Using constructs of the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) type II receptor (RII) promoter linked to the luciferase gene, we have demonstrated that ERT activates transcription of the TGF-β RII gene through the 5′-TTTCCTGTTTCC-3′ response element spanning nucleotides +13 to +24 and multiple additional ETS binding sites between −1816 and −82 of the TGF-β RII promoter. A specific interaction between ERT and the ETS binding sites was also demonstrated using an electrophoretic mobility shift assay. Deletion mapping of ERT protein suggests that the transactivation domain resides in the amino terminus while the DNA-binding domain is localized to the carboxyl-terminal region. Our results suggest that ERT might be a major transcription factor involved in the transcriptional regulation of the TGF-β RII gene.

Abstract: This study revealed that the synthesis of effective flow modifiers using diamine monomers and fatty acid reduces the melt viscosity of polyamide 66 (PA66) composites. Moreover, the study provided insights into the rheological and mechanical properties of these reinforced polymers. In particular, the oligomers hexamethylenediamide, dodecamethylene diamide, 4,4′-methylenebis(cyclohexylamide) (i.e.,HMDA, DMDA, MCHA) to modify the PA66 were prepared from hexamethylenediamine, dodecamethylene diamine, 4,4′-methylenebis(cyclohexylamine). The synthesized modifiers showed thermal stability in the PA66 processing temperature. Further, the chemical similarity increased due to amide bonds in the backbone of the flow modifiers, showing good compatibility with PA66. Additionally, PA66/glass fiber (GF) composites containing the flow modifier showed enhanced rheological and mechanical properties. The flow modifiers significantly improved the tensile strength and flexural modulus of the PA66/GF composites. The proposed synthetic method is straightforward, opening up a new strategy for reducing the melt viscosity of PA66 without degradation of the mechanical properties. The method improves the compatibility of the PA66/GF composites even in high amounts of GF, achieving effective polymer processing for practical applications.

50. Temperature dependence of high-frequency giant magnetoimpedance in glass-coated Co67Fe3.8Ni1.4B11.5Si14.6Mo1.7 microwires

Abstract: The investigation of the low-temperature dependence of the high-frequency magnetoimpedance (MI) effect is very important for scientific interests and thermal stability of magnetic sensors. Also, using high frequencies may be more profitable for microwires due to the very short penetration depth. In this study, the giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) effect in the high-frequency range from 100 MHz to 1 GHz was investigated in a glass-coated amorphous Co67Fe3.8Ni1.4B11.5Si14.6Mo1.7 microwire measured at various temperatures from 10 K to 300 K. The values of the magnetoimpedance ratio (MIR) became larger with an increase of the temperature and also increased with an increase of the frequency. The MIR ratio is shown to be extremely stable for magnetic sensors at low temperature. (© 2004 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
