Traditional computational methods for antibody design involved random mutagenesis followed by energy function assessment for candidate selection. Recently, diffusion models have garnered considerable attention as cutting-edge generative models, lauded for their remarkable performance. However, these methods often focus solely on the backbone or sequence, resulting in the incomplete depiction of the overall structure and necessitating additional techniques to predict the missing component. This study presents Antibody-SGM, an innovative joint structure-sequence diffusion model that addresses the limitations of existing protein backbone generation models. Unlike previous models, Antibody-SGM successfully integrates sequence-specific attributes and functional properties into the generation process. Our methodology generates full-atom native-like antibody heavy chains by refining the generation to create valid pairs of sequences and structures, starting with random sequences and structural properties. The versatility of our method is demonstrated through various applications, including the design of full-atom antibodies, antigen-specific CDR design, antibody heavy chains optimization, validation with Alphafold3, and the identification of crucial antibody sequences and structural features. Antibody-SGM also optimizes protein function through active inpainting learning, allowing simultaneous sequence and structure optimization. These improvements demonstrate the promise of our strategy for protein engineering and significantly increase the power of protein design models.

Artificial Kitaev chains can be used to engineer Majorana bound states (MBSs) in superconductor–semiconductor hybrids1–4. In this work, we realize a two-site Kitaev chain in a two-dimensional electron gas by coupling two quantum dots through a region proximitized by a superconductor. We demonstrate systematic control over inter-dot couplings through in-plane rotations of the magnetic field and via electrostatic gating of the proximitized region. This allows us to tune the system to sweet spots in parameter space, where robust correlated zero-bias conductance peaks are observed in tunnelling spectroscopy. To study the extent of hybridization between localized MBSs, we probe the evolution of the energy spectrum with magnetic field and estimate the Majorana polarization, an important metric for Majorana-based qubits5,6. The implementation of a Kitaev chain on a scalable and flexible two-dimensional platform provides a realistic path towards more advanced experiments that require manipulation and readout of multiple MBSs.

Here, we present HelixDiff, a score-based diffusion model for generating all-atom helical structures. We developed a hot spot-specific generation algorithm for the conditional design of α-helices targeting critical hotspot residues in bioactive peptides. HelixDiff generates α-helices with near-native geometries for most test scenarios with root-mean-square deviations (RMSDs) less than 1 Å. Significantly, HelixDiff outperformed our prior GAN-based model with regard to sequence recovery and Rosetta scores for unconditional and conditional generations. As a proof of principle, we employed HelixDiff to design an acetylated GLP-1 D-peptide agonist that activated the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) cAMP accumulation without stimulating the glucagon-like peptide-2 receptor (GLP-2R). We predicted that this D-peptide agonist has a similar orientation to GLP-1 and is substantially more stable in MD simulations than our earlier D-GLP-1 retro-inverse design. This D-peptide analogue is highly resistant to protease degradation and induces similar levels of AKT phosphorylation in HEK293 cells expressing GLP-1R compared to the native GLP-1. We then discovered that matching crucial hotspots for the GLP-1 function is more important than the sequence orientation of the generated D-peptides when constructing D-GLP-1 agonists.

Heavy-fermion metals are prototype systems for observing emergent quantum phases driven by electronic interactions1–6. A long-standing aspiration is the dimensional reduction of these materials to exert control over their quantum phases7–11, which remains a significant challenge because traditional intermetallic heavy-fermion compounds have three-dimensional atomic and electronic structures. Here we report comprehensive thermodynamic and spectroscopic evidence of an antiferromagnetically ordered heavy-fermion ground state in CeSiI, an intermetallic comprising two-dimensional (2D) metallic sheets held together by weak interlayer van der Waals (vdW) interactions. Owing to its vdW nature, CeSiI has a quasi-2D electronic structure, and we can control its physical dimension through exfoliation. The emergence of coherent hybridization of fand conduction electrons at low temperature is supported by the temperature evolution of angle-resolved photoemission and scanning tunnelling spectra near the Fermi level and by heat capacity measurements. Electrical transport measurements on few-layer flakes reveal heavy-fermion behaviour and magnetic order down to the ultra-thin regime. Our work establishes CeSiI and related materials as a unique platform for studying dimensionally confined heavy fermions in bulk crystals and employing 2D device fabrication techniques and vdW heterostructures12to manipulate the interplay between Kondo screening, magnetic order and proximity effects.

Here, we designed three d-GLP-2 agonists that activated the glucagon-like peptide-2 receptor (GLP-2R) cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) accumulation without stimulating the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R). All the d-GLP-2 agonists increased the protein kinase B phosphorylated (p-AKT) expression levels in a time- and concentration-dependent manner in vitro. The most effective d-GLP-2 analogue boosted the AKT phosphorylation 2.28 times more effectively compared to the native l-GLP-2. The enhancement in the p-AKT levels induced by the d-GLP-2 analogues could be explained by GLP-2R’s more prolonged activation, given that the d-GLP-2 analogues induce a lower β-arrestin recruitment. The higher stability to protease degradation of our d-GLP-2 agonists helps us envision their potential applications in enhancing intestinal absorption and treating inflammatory bowel illness while lowering the high dosage required by the current treatments.

Conventional antiferroelectric materials with atomic-scale anti-aligned dipoles undergo a transition to a ferroelectric (FE) phase under strong electric fields. The moiré superlattice formed in the twisted stacks of van der Waals crystals exhibits polar domains alternating in moiré length with anti-aligned dipoles. In this moiré domain antiferroelectic (MDAF) arrangement, the distribution of electric dipoles is distinguished from that of two-dimensional FEs, suggesting dissimilar domain dynamics. Here we performed an operando transmission electron microscopy investigation on twisted bilayer WSe2to observe the polar domain dynamics in real time. We find that the topological protection, provided by the domain wall network, prevents the MDAF-to-FE transition. As one decreases the twist angle, however, this transition occurs as the domain wall network disappears. Exploiting stroboscopic operando transmission electron microscopy on the FE phase, we measure a maximum domain wall velocity of 300 μm s–1. Domain wall pinnings by various disorders limit the domain wall velocity and cause Barkhausen noises in the polarization hysteresis loop. Atomic-scale analysis of the pinning disorders provides structural insight on how to improve the switching speed of van der Waals FEs.

As the electron mobility of two-dimensional (2D) materials is dependent on an insulating substrate, the nonuniform surface charge and morphology of silicon dioxide (SiO2) layers degrade the electron mobility of 2D materials. Here, we demonstrate that an atomically thin single-crystal insulating layer of silicon oxynitride (SiON) can be grown epitaxially on a SiC wafer at a wafer scale and find that the electron mobility of graphene field-effect transistors on the SiON layer is 1.5 times higher than that of graphene field-effect transistors on typical SiO2films. Microscale and nanoscale void defects caused by heterostructure growth were eliminated for the wafer-scale growth of the single-crystal SiON layer. The single-crystal SiON layer can be grown on a SiC wafer with a single thermal process. This simple fabrication process, compatible with commercial semiconductor fabrication processes, makes the layer an excellent replacement for the SiO2/Si wafer.

The two natural allotropes of carbon, diamond and graphite, are extended networks of sp3-hybridized and sp2-hybridized atoms, respectively1. By mixing different hybridizations and geometries of carbon, one could conceptually construct countless synthetic allotropes. Here we introduce graphullerene, a two-dimensional crystalline polymer of C60that bridges the gulf between molecular and extended carbon materials. Its constituent fullerene subunits arrange hexagonally in a covalently interconnected molecular sheet. We report charge-neutral, purely carbon-based macroscopic crystals that are large enough to be mechanically exfoliated to produce molecularly thin flakes with clean interfaces—a critical requirement for the creation of heterostructures and optoelectronic devices2. The synthesis entails growing single crystals of layered polymeric (Mg4C60)∞by chemical vapour transport and subsequently removing the magnesium with dilute acid. We explore the thermal conductivity of this material and find it to be much higher than that of molecular C60, which is a consequence of the in-plane covalent bonding. Furthermore, imaging few-layer graphullerene flakes using transmission electron microscopy and near-field nano-photoluminescence spectroscopy reveals the existence of moiré-like superlattices3. More broadly, the synthesis of extended carbon structures by polymerization of molecular precursors charts a clear path to the systematic design of materials for the construction of two-dimensional heterostructures with tunable optoelectronic properties.

Tailoring of the propagation dynamics of exciton-polaritons in two-dimensional quantum materials has shown extraordinary promise to enable nanoscale control of electromagnetic fields. Varying permittivities along crystal directions within layers of material systems, can lead to an in-plane anisotropic dispersion of polaritons. Exploiting this physics as a control strategy for manipulating the directional propagation of the polaritons is desired and remains elusive. Here we explore the in-plane anisotropic exciton-polariton propagation in SnSe, a group-IV monochalcogenide semiconductor that forms ferroelectric domains and shows room-temperature excitonic behaviour. Exciton-polaritons are launched in SnSe multilayer plates, and their propagation dynamics and dispersion are studied. This propagation of exciton-polaritons allows for nanoscale imaging of the in-plane ferroelectric domains. Finally, we demonstrate the electric switching of the exciton-polaritons in the ferroelectric domains of this complex van der Waals system. The study suggests that systems such as group-IV monochalcogenides could serve as excellent ferroic platforms for actively reconfigurable polaritonic optical devices.

Single layers of two-dimensional (2D) materials hold the promise for further miniaturization of semiconductor electronic devices. However, the metal–semiconductor contact resistance limits device performance. To mitigate this problem, we propose modulation doping, specifically a doping layer placed on the opposite side of a metal–semiconductor interface. Using first-principles calculations to obtain the band alignment, we show that the Schottky barrier height and, consequently, the contact resistance at the metal–semiconductor interface can be reduced by modulation doping. We demonstrate the feasibility of this approach for a single-layer tungsten diselenide (WSe2) channel and 2D MXene modulation doping layers, interfaced with several different metal contacts. Our results indicate that the Fermi level of the metal can be shifted across the entire band gap. This approach can be straight-forwardly generalized for other 2D semiconductors and a wide variety of doping layers.

Successful treatments for intractable chronic low back pain (CLBP) in patients who are not eligible for surgical interventions are scarce. The superior efficacy of differential target multiplexed spinal cord stimulation (DTM SCS) to conventional SCS (Conv-SCS) on the treatment of CLBP in patients with persistent spinal pain syndrome (PSPS) who have failed surgical interventions (PSPS-T2) motivated the evaluation of DTM SCS versus Conv-SCS on PSPS patients who are non-surgical candidates (PSPS-T1).

Targeting ligands are conjugated onto nanoparticles to increase their selectivity for diseased cells. However, they become covered by serum proteins which prevent them from binding to target receptors. Here, we show that the nanoparticle protein corona achieved a maximum thickness in serum because the protein adsorption and desorption rates reached an equilibrium. Simulation experiments suggest that the number of molecular interactions between proteins decrease with distance from the nanoparticle surface until the forces are too weak to hold the proteins together. This results in an equilibration state between the proteins on the nanoparticle surface and in biological fluids. Conjugating targeting ligands to this equilibrated protein corona allowed the nanoparticles to bind to target cells in the presence of serum proteins. In contrast, conjugating targeting ligands directly to the nanoparticle surface resulted in a 55% reduction in binding to target cells in serum. We demonstrated this concept using two nanoparticle material types with different surface chemistries. We present a ligand-on-corona conjugation strategy that overcomes the negative impact of serum protein adsorption on nanoparticle cellular targeting.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread around the world, with several new variants emerging, particularly those of concern (VOCs). Omicron (B.1.1.529), a recent VOC with many mutations in the spike protein’s receptor-binding domain (RBD), has attracted a great deal of scientific and public interest. We previously developed two D-peptide inhibitors for the infection of the original SARS-CoV-2 and its VOCs, alpha and beta, in vitro. Here, we demonstrated that Covid3 and Covid_extended_1 maintained their high-affinity binding (29.4–31.3 nM) to the omicron RBD. Both D-peptides blocked the omicron variant in vitroinfection with IC50s of 3.13 and 5.56 μM, respectively. We predicted that Covid3 shares a larger overlapping binding region with the ACE2 binding motif than different classes of neutralizing monoclonal antibodies. We envisioned the design of D-peptide inhibitors targeting the receptor-binding motif as the most promising approach for inhibiting current and future VOCs of SARS-CoV-2, given that the ACE2 binding interface is more limited to tolerate mutations than most of the RBD’s surface.

A rechargeable aluminum-ion battery based on chloroaluminate electrolytes has received intense attention due to the high abundance and chemical stability of aluminum. However, the fundamental intercalation processes and dynamics in these battery systems remain unresolved. Here, the energetics and dynamics of chloroaluminate ion intercalation in atomically thin single crystal graphite are investigated by fabricating mesoscopic devices for charge transport and operandooptical microscopy. These mesoscopic measurements are compared to the high-performance rechargeable Al-based battery consisting of a few-layer graphene–multiwall carbon nanotube composite cathode. These composites exhibit a 60% capacity enhancement over pyrolytic graphite, while an ∼3-fold improvement in overall ion diffusivity is also obtained exhibiting ∼1% of those in atomically thin single crystals. Our results thus establish the distinction between intrinsic and ensemble electrochemical behavior in Al-based batteries and show that engineering ion transport in these devices can yet lead to vast improvements in battery performance.

In low-dimensional systems, the combination of reduced dimensionality, strong interactions and topology has led to a growing number of many-body quantum phenomena. Thermal transport, which is sensitive to all energy-carrying degrees of freedom, provides a discriminating probe of emergent excitations in quantum materials and devices. However, thermal transport measurements in low dimensions are dominated by the phonon contribution of the lattice, requiring an experimental approach to isolate the electronic thermal conductance. Here we measured non-local voltage fluctuations in a multi-terminal device to reveal the electronic heat transported across a mesoscopic bridge made of low-dimensional materials. Using two-dimensional graphene as a noise thermometer, we measured the quantitative electronic thermal conductance of graphene and carbon nanotubes up to 70 K, achieving a precision of ~1% of the thermal conductance quantum at 5 K. Employing linear and nonlinear thermal transport, we observed signatures of energy transport mediated by long-range interactions in one-dimensional electron systems, in agreement with a theoretical model.

One of the first theoretically predicted manifestations of strong interactions in many-electron systems was the Wigner crystal1–3, in which electrons crystallize into a regular lattice. The crystal can melt via either thermal or quantum fluctuations4. Quantum melting of the Wigner crystal is predicted to produce exotic intermediate phases5,6and quantum magnetism7,8because of the intricate interplay of Coulomb interactions and kinetic energy. However, studying two-dimensional Wigner crystals in the quantum regime has often required a strong magnetic field9–11or a moiré superlattice potential12–15, thus limiting access to the full phase diagram of the interacting electron liquid. Here we report the observation of bilayer Wigner crystals without magnetic fields or moiré potentials in an atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructure, which consists of two MoSe2monolayers separated by hexagonal boron nitride. We observe optical signatures of robust correlated insulating states at symmetric (1:1) and asymmetric (3:1, 4:1 and 7:1) electron doping of the two MoSe2layers at cryogenic temperatures. We attribute these features to bilayer Wigner crystals composed of two interlocked commensurate triangular electron lattices, stabilized by inter-layer interaction16. The Wigner crystal phases are remarkably stable, and undergo quantum and thermal melting transitions at electron densities of up to 6 × 1012per square centimetre and at temperatures of up to about 40 kelvin. Our results demonstrate that an atomically thin heterostructure is a highly tunable platform for realizing many-body electronic states and probing their liquid–solid and magnetic quantum phase transitions4–8,17.

Multiple variables play a role in spinal cord stimulation (SCS) treatment outcomes, including patient anatomy, pain pattern, lead location, stimulation parameters, and so on. A wide range of stimulation parameters are considered safe and on‐label, and as a result a growing number of new frequencies and frequency‐combinations are being incorporated into standard practice. A standardized approach to therapy delivery may provide more consistent outcomes for more patients. The Vectors study evaluated whether there is significant sustained improvement in pain and functional outcomes when therapy is delivered using a standardized approach. Vectors, a post‐market, single‐arm study evaluated the safety and efficacy of SCS with an implantable neurostimulator starting with 1 kHz stimulation, targeting the T9–T10 disc space following paresthesia mapping. Subjects with chronic intractable low back and leg pain (visual analogue scale [VAS] ≥ 50 mm) were enrolled. The primary endpoint was change in overall pain (VAS) at the three‐month visit compared to baseline. Subjects were followed through 12 months. Secondary endpoints included changes in low back and leg pain, quality of life (European Quality of Life – Five Dimensions, EQ‐5D‐5L), disability (Oswestry Disability Index, ODI), individual subject goals, and subject satisfaction. There was a significant reduction in overall pain (VAS; 45.4 mm) through the three‐month visit, which was sustained through 12 months. At 12 months, 79% of subjects had ≥50% improvement in at least one pain domain (overall, lowback or leg) with 85% of subjects reporting therapy satisfaction. There was a decrease in disability and an improvement in quality of life with 70% of subjects achieving a personal activity goal by the three‐month visit. Long‐term pain relief and improvement in quality of life and function were achieved when following a standardized workflow. Graphene-based heterostructures display a variety of phenomena that are strongly tunable by electrostatic local gates. Monolayer graphene (MLG) exhibits tunable surface plasmon polaritons, as revealed by scanning nano-infrared experiments. In bilayer graphene (BLG), an electronic gap is induced by a perpendicular displacement field. Gapped BLG is predicted to display unusual effects such as plasmon amplification and domain wall plasmons with significantly larger lifetime than MLG. Furthermore, a variety of correlated electronic phases highly sensitive to displacement fields have been observed in twisted graphene structures. However, applying perpendicular displacement fields in nano-infrared experiments has only recently become possible [Li, H.; Nano Lett.2020, 20, 3106−3112]. In this work, we fully characterize two approaches to realizing nano-optics compatible top gates: bilayer MoS2and MLG. We perform nano-infrared imaging on both types of structures and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. Our work paves the way for comprehensive near-field experiments of correlated phenomena and plasmonic effects in graphene-based heterostructures.

Two-dimensional (2D) π-conjugated metal–organic frameworks (πMOFs) are a new class of designer electronic materials that are porous and tunable through the constituent organic molecules and choice of metal ions. Unlike typical MOFs, 2D πMOFs exhibit high conductivity mediated by delocalized π-electrons and have promising applications in a range of electrical devices as well as exotic physical properties. Here, we develop a growth method that generates single-crystal plates with lateral dimensions exceeding 10 μm, orders of magnitude bigger than previous methods. Synthesis of large single crystals eliminates a significant impediment to the fundamental characterization of the materials, allowing determination of the intrinsic conductivity and mobility along the 2D plane of πMOFs. A representative 2D πMOF, Ni-CAT-1, exhibits a conductivity of up to 2 S/cm, and Hall measurement reveals the origin of the high conductivity. Characterization of crystalline 2D πMOFs creates the foundation for developing electronic applications of this promising and highly diverse class of materials.

Interferometers probe the wave-nature and exchange statistics of indistinguishable particles—for example, electrons in the chiral one-dimensional edge channels of the quantum Hall effect (QHE). Quantum point contacts can split and recombine these channels, enabling interference of charged particles. Such quantum Hall interferometers (QHIs) can unveil the exchange statistics of anyonic quasi-particles in the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE). Here, we present a fabrication technique for QHIs in van der Waals (vdW) materials and realize a tunable, graphene-based Fabry–Pérot (FP) QHI. The graphite-encapsulated architecture allows observation of FQHE at a magnetic field of 3T and precise partitioning of integer and fractional edge modes. We measure pure Aharonov–Bohm interference in the integer QHE, a major technical challenge in small FP interferometers, and find that edge modes exhibit high-visibility interference due to large velocities. Our results establish vdW heterostructures as a versatile alternative to GaAs-based interferometers for future experiments targeting anyonic quasi-particles.

Moiré superlattices in twisted van der Waals materials have recently emerged as a promising platform for engineering electronic and optical properties. A major obstacle to fully understanding these systems and harnessing their potential is the limited ability to correlate direct imaging of the moiré structure with optical and electronic properties. Here we develop a secondary electron microscope technique to directly image stacking domains in fully functional van der Waals heterostructure devices. After demonstrating the imaging of AB/BA and ABA/ABC domains in multilayer graphene, we employ this technique to investigate reconstructed moiré patterns in twisted WSe2/WSe2bilayers and directly correlate the increasing moiré periodicity with the emergence of two distinct exciton species in photoluminescence measurements. These states can be tuned individually through electrostatic gating and feature different valley coherence properties. We attribute our observations to the formation of an array of two intralayer exciton species that reside in alternating locations in the superlattice, and open up new avenues to realize tunable exciton arrays in twisted van der Waals heterostructures, with applications in quantum optoelectronics and explorations of novel many-body systems.

Sensitive microwave detectors are essential in radioastronomy1, dark-matter axion searches2and superconducting quantum information science3,4. The conventional strategy to obtain higher-sensitivity bolometry is the nanofabrication of ever smaller devices to augment the thermal response5–7. However, it is difficult to obtain efficient photon coupling and to maintain the material properties in a device with a large surface-to-volume ratio owing to surface contamination. Here we present an ultimately thin bolometric sensor based on monolayer graphene. To utilize the minute electronic specific heat and thermal conductivity of graphene, we develop a superconductor–graphene–superconductor Josephson junction8–13bolometer embedded in a microwave resonator with a resonance frequency of 7.9 gigahertz and over 99 per cent coupling efficiency. The dependence of the Josephson switching current on the operating temperature, charge density, input power and frequency shows a noise-equivalent power of 7 × 10−19watts per square-root hertz, which corresponds to an energy resolution of a single 32-gigahertz photon14, reaching the fundamental limit imposed by intrinsic thermal fluctuations at 0.19 kelvin. Our results establish that two-dimensional materials could enable the development of bolometers with the highest sensitivity allowed by the laws of thermodynamics.

Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductor heterostructures are actively explored as a new platform for quantum optoelectronic systems. Most state of the art devices make use of insulating hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) that acts as a wide-bandgap dielectric encapsulating layer that also provides an atomically smooth and clean interface that is paramount for proper device operation. We report the observation of large, through-hBN photocurrents that are generated upon optical excitation of hBN encapsulated MoSe2and WSe2monolayer devices. We attribute these effects to Auger recombination in the TMDs, in combination with an asymmetric band offset between the TMD and the hBN. We present experimental investigation of these effects and compare our observations with detailed, ab-initio modeling. Our observations have important implications for the design of optoelectronic devices based on encapsulated TMD devices. In systems where precise charge-state control is desired, the out-of-plane current path presents both a challenge and an opportunity for optical doping control. Since the current directly depends on Auger recombination, it can act as a local, direct probe of both the efficiency of the Auger process as well as its dependence on the local density of states in integrated devices.

Van der Waals heterostructures obtained via stacking and twisting have been used to create moiré superlattices1, enabling new optical and electronic properties in solid-state systems. Moiré lattices in twisted bilayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) result in exciton trapping2–5, host Mott insulating and superconducting states6and act as unique Hubbard systems7–9whose correlated electronic states can be detected and manipulated optically. Structurally, these twisted heterostructures feature atomic reconstruction and domain formation10–14. However, due to the nanoscale size of moiré domains, the effects of atomic reconstruction on the electronic and excitonic properties have not been systematically investigated. Here we use near-0°-twist-angle MoSe2/MoSe2bilayers with large rhombohedral AB/BA domains15to directly probe the excitonic properties of individual domains with far-field optics. We show that this system features broken mirror/inversion symmetry, with the AB and BA domains supporting interlayer excitons with out-of-plane electric dipole moments in opposite directions. The dipole orientation of ground-state Γ–K interlayer excitons can be flipped with electric fields, while higher-energy K–K interlayer excitons undergo field-asymmetric hybridization with intralayer K–K excitons. Our study reveals the impact of crystal symmetry on TMD excitons and points to new avenues for realizing topologically non-trivial systems16,17, exotic metasurfaces18, collective excitonic phases19and quantum emitter arrays20,21via domain-pattern engineering.

The electron–hole plasma in charge-neutral graphene is predicted to realize a quantum critical system in which electrical transport features a universal hydrodynamic description, even at room temperature1,2. This quantum critical ‘Dirac fluid’ is expected to have a shear viscosity close to a minimum bound3,4, with an interparticle scattering rate saturating1at the Planckian time, the shortest possible timescale for particles to relax. Although electrical transport measurements at finite carrier density are consistent with hydrodynamic electron flow in graphene5–8, a clear demonstration of viscous flow at the charge-neutrality point remains elusive. Here we directly image viscous Dirac fluid flow in graphene at room temperature by measuring the associated stray magnetic field. Nanoscale magnetic imaging is performed using quantum spin magnetometers realized with nitrogen vacancy centres in diamond. Scanning single-spin and wide-field magnetometry reveal a parabolic Poiseuille profile for electron flow in a high-mobility graphene channel near the charge-neutrality point, establishing the viscous transport of the Dirac fluid. This measurement is in contrast to the conventional uniform flow profile imaged in a metallic conductor and also in a low-mobility graphene channel. Via combined imaging and transport measurements, we obtain viscosity and scattering rates, and observe that these quantities are comparable to the universal values expected at quantum criticality. This finding establishes a nearly ideal electron fluid in charge-neutral, high-mobility graphene at room temperature4. Our results will enable the study of hydrodynamic transport in quantum critical fluids relevant to strongly correlated electrons in high-temperature superconductors9. This work also highlights the capability of quantum spin magnetometers to probe correlated electronic phenomena at the nanoscale.

Reducing the energy bandwidth of electrons in a lattice below the long-range Coulomb interaction energy promotes correlation effects. Moiré superlattices—which are created by stacking van der Waals heterostructures with a controlled twist angle1–3—enable the engineering of electron band structure. Exotic quantum phases can emerge in an engineered moiré flat band. The recent discovery of correlated insulator states, superconductivity and the quantum anomalous Hall effect in the flat band of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene4–8has sparked the exploration of correlated electron states in other moiré systems9–11. The electronic properties of van der Waals moiré superlattices can further be tuned by adjusting the interlayer coupling6or the band structure of constituent layers9. Here, using van der Waals heterostructures of twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG), we demonstrate a flat electron band that is tunable by perpendicular electric fields in a range of twist angles. Similarly to magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, TDBG shows energy gaps at the half- and quarter-filled flat bands, indicating the emergence of correlated insulator states. We find that the gaps of these insulator states increase with in-plane magnetic field, suggesting a ferromagnetic order. On doping the half-filled insulator, a sudden drop in resistivity is observed with decreasing temperature. This critical behaviour is confined to a small area in the density–electric-field plane, and is attributed to a phase transition from a normal metal to a spin-polarized correlated state. The discovery of spin-polarized correlated states in electric-field-tunable TDBG provides a new route to engineering interaction-driven quantum phases.

Coherent charge transport along ballistic paths can be introduced into graphene by Andreev reflection, for which an electron reflects from a superconducting contact as a hole, while a Cooper pair is transmitted. We use liquid-helium cooled scanning gate microscopy (SGM) to image Andreev reflection in graphene in the magnetic focusing regime, where carriers move along cyclotron orbits between contacts. Images of flow are obtained by deflecting carrier paths and displaying the resulting change in conductance. When electrons enter the superconductor, Andreev-reflected holes leave for the collecting contact. To test the results, we destroy Andreev reflection with a large current and by heating above the critical temperature. In both cases, the reflected carriers change from holes to electrons.

Tuning electrical conductivity of semiconducting materials through substitutional doping is crucial for fabricating functional devices. This, however, has not been fully realized in two-dimensional (2D) materials due to the difficulty of homogeneously controlling the dopant concentrations and the lack of systematic study of the net impact of substitutional dopants separate from that of the unintentional doping from the device fabrication processes. Here, we grow wafer-scale, continuous MoS2monolayers with tunable concentrations of Nb and Re and fabricate devices using a polymer-free approach to study the direct electrical impact of substitutional dopants in MoS2monolayers. In particular, the electrical conductivity of Nb doped MoS2in the absence of electrostatic gating is reproducibly tuned over 7 orders of magnitude by controlling the Nb concentration. Our study further indicates that the dopant carriers do not fully ionize in the 2D limit, unlike in their three-dimensional analogues, which is explained by weaker charge screening and impurity band conduction. Moreover, we show that the dopants are stable, which enables the doped films to be processed as independent building blocks that can be used as electrodes for functional circuitry.

The artificial stacking of atomically thin crystals suffers from intrinsic limitations in terms of control and reproducibility of the relative orientation of exfoliated flakes. This drawback is particularly severe when the properties of the system critically depends on the twist angle, as in the case of the dodecagonal quasicrystal formed by two graphene layers rotated by 30°. Here we show that large-area 30°-rotated bilayer graphene can be grown deterministically by chemical vapor deposition on Cu, eliminating the need of artificial assembly. The quasicrystals are easily transferred to arbitrary substrates and integrated in high-quality hexagonal boron nitride-encapsulated heterostructures, which we process into dual-gated devices exhibiting carrier mobility up to 105cm2/(V s). From low-temperature magnetotransport, we find that the graphene quasicrystals effectively behave as uncoupled graphene layers, showing 8-fold degenerate quantum Hall states. This result indicates that the Dirac cones replica detected by previous photoemission experiments do not contribute to the electrical transport.

We report a combined nano-photocurrent and infrared nanoscopy study of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) enabling access to the local electronic phenomena at length scales as short as 20 nm. We show that the photocurrent changes sign at carrier densities tracking the local superlattice density of states of TBG. We use this property to identify domains of varying local twist angle by local photothermoelectric effect. Consistent with the photocurrent study, infrared nanoimaging experiments reveal optical conductivity features dominated by twist-angle-dependent interband transitions. Our results provide a fast and robust method for mapping the electronic structure of TBG and suggest that similar methods can be broadly applied to probe electronic inhomogeneities of Moiré superlattices in other van der Waals heterostructures.

Disparities in bladder cancer survival by race/ethnicity and gender are likely related to differences in diagnosis. We assessed disparities in stage at diagnosis and potential contributing factors within a large, integrated delivery system.

Hydrocarbon-stapled peptides are a class of bioactive α-helical ligands developed to target protein–protein interactions. Peptide stapling has benefited from the development of several chemical reactions to modulate their membrane permeability and binding affinity. However, in most current programs, choosing the best stapling positions is usually a trial-and-error process. Here, we develop a protocol to obtain optimal stapling positions computationally. Our method is based on molecular dynamics simulations and free energy calculations with nonequilibrium approaches; here, we predict the binding poses, hot-spot residues, and binding affinity differences of a set of perfluoroarene stapled α-helical peptides of the BIM BH3 peptide to the BCLXLreceptor. The prediction of the hot-spot residues within the target peptide through computational alanine scanning anticipates not only the key residues for the receptor–peptide complex formation but also which positions should be avoided when applying the stapling groups. The staple moieties introduce local conformational changes not only in the replaced positions but also on their neighbor residues of the template peptide further affecting their binding behavior. Our approach is successful at rank-ordering the binding affinities of these stapled peptides with respect to the BIM BH3 peptide.

Crystalline, electrically conductive, and intrinsically porous materials are rare. Layered two-dimensional (2D) metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) break this trend. They are porous crystals that exhibit high electrical conductivity and are novel platforms for studying fundamentals of electricity and magnetism in two dimensions. Despite demonstrated applications, electrical transport in these remains poorly understood because of a lack of single crystal studies. Here, studies of single crystals of two 2D MOFs, Ni3(HITP)2and Cu3(HHTP)2, uncover critical insights into their structure and transport. Conductivity measurements down to 0.3 K suggest metallicity for mesoscopic single crystals of Ni3(HITP)2, which contrasts with apparent activated conductivity for polycrystalline films. Microscopy studies further reveal that these MOFs are not isostructural as previously reported. Notably, single rods exhibit conductivities up to 150 S/cm, which persist even after prolonged exposure to ambient conditions. These single crystal studies confirm that 2D MOFs hold promise as molecularly tunable platforms for fundamental science and applications where porosity and conductivity are critical.

The article discusses graphene, a sheet of carbon that is one-atom-thick. Only recently could physicists isolate graphene. Graphene, a pure, flawless crystal, conducts electricity at room temperature faster than any substance. Graphene may enable engineers to construct a number of products such as ultrahigh-speed transistors. Another benefit of graphene is that physicists are finding that they can test theories heretofore thought to be measurable only in black holes and particle accelerators. The International Neuromodulation Society convened a multispecialty group of physicians and scientists based on expertise with international representation to establish evidence-based guidance on intrathecal drug delivery in treating chronic pain. This Polyanalgesic Consensus Conference (PACC®) project, created >two decades ago, intends to provide evidence-based guidance for important safety and efficacy issues surrounding intrathecal drug delivery and its impact on the practice of neuromodulation.

This prospective, open-label, single-arm, multicenter study evaluated the use of differential target multiplexed (DTM) spinal cord stimulation (SCS) therapy for chronic upper limb pain (ULP).

Detecting nucleic acids at ultralow concentrations is critical for research and clinical applications. Particle-based assays are commonly used to detect nucleic acids. However, DNA hybridization on particle surfaces is inefficient due to the instability of tethered sequences, which negatively influences the assay’s detection sensitivity. Here, we report a method to stabilize sequences on particle surfaces using a double-stranded linker at the 5′ end of the tethered sequence. We termed this method Rigid Double Stranded Genomic Linkers for Improved DNA Analysis (RIGID-DNA). Our method led to a 3- and 100-fold improvement of the assays’ clinical and analytical sensitivity, respectively. Our approach can enhance the hybridization efficiency of particle-based assays without altering existing assay workflows. This approach can be adapted to other platforms and surfaces to enhance the detection sensitivity.

Die Erfassung der Rahmenbedingungen der DäT im Arbeitsalltag ist Voraussetzung für die Beschreibung eines Optimierungspotenzials.

Establishing reliable electrical contacts to atomically thin materials is a prerequisite for both fundamental studies and applications yet remains a challenge. In particular, the development of contact techniques for air-sensitive monolayers has lagged behind, despite their unique properties and significant potential for applications. Here, we present a robust method to create contacts to device layers encapsulated within hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). This method uses plasma etching and metal deposition to create ‘vias’ in the hBN with graphene forming an atomically thin etch-stop. The resulting partially fluorinated graphene (PFG) protects the underlying device layer from air-induced degradation and damage during metal deposition. PFG is resistive in-plane but maintains high out-of-plane conductivity. The work function of the PFG/metal contact is tunable through the degree of fluorination, offering opportunities for contact engineering. Using the in situvia technique, we achieve ambipolar contact to air-sensitive monolayer 2H-molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe2) with more than 1 order of magnitude improvement in on-current density compared to previous literature. The complete encapsulation provides high reproducibility and long-term stability. The technique can be extended to other air-sensitive materials as well as air-stable materials, offering highly competitive device performance.

Research describes a mathematical approach for the analysis of genetic networks and how it can be applied to synthetic gene networks. Results suggest that the relationship between network structure and behavior in genetic networks, such as gene expression and regulation, can be explained by the models derived from the new approach.

Research has been conducted on gene arrays. The authors describe the data analysis method non-negative matrix factorization used in gene array experiments.

The growth of single crystals of MoS2and WS2by materials transport through a liquid salt flux made from a low-melting mixture of NaCl and CsCl is presented. The crystals are structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which reveals that the 2H-MoS2crystals contain a very small percentage (about 3%) of 3R intergrowths and that the 2H-WS2crystals display less than 1% of 3R intergrowths. Characterization of the crystals by scanning electron microscopy is presented as are photoluminescence spectra of exfoliated monolayers that show that MoS2crystals grown by this method are superior in quality to commercially available MoS2crystals and equivalent to the current state of the art.

When a strong magnetic field is applied to a two-dimensional electron system, interactions between the electrons can cause fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effects1,2. Bringing two two-dimensional conductors close to each other, a new set of correlated states can emerge due to interactions between electrons in the same and opposite layers3–6. Here we report interlayer-correlated FQH states in a device consisting of two parallel graphene layers separated by a thin insulator. Current flow in one layer generates different quantized Hall signals in the two layers. This result is interpreted using composite fermion (CF) theory7with different intralayer and interlayer Chern–Simons gauge-field couplings. We observe FQH states corresponding to integer values of CF Landau level (LL) filling in both layers, as well as ‘semiquantized’ states, where a full CF LL couples to a continuously varying partially filled CF LL. We also find a quantized state between two coupled half-filled CF LLs and attribute it to an interlayer CF exciton condensate. Transport data reveal interlayer composite fermion fractional quantum Hall states in double-layer graphene. The authors also show that these can pair up to form an interlayer composite fermion exciton condensate.
