We report on the design and performance of a broadband dichroic coating for a solar energy conversion system. As a spectral beam splitter, the coating facilitates a hybrid system that combines a photovoltaic cell with a thermal collector. When positioned at a 45° angle with respect to incident light, the coating provides high reflectance in the 40–1100 nm and high transmission in the 1200–2000 nm ranges for a photovoltaic cell and a thermal collector, respectively. Numerical simulations show that our design leads to a sharp transition between the reflection and transmission bands, low ripples in both bands, and slight polarization dependence.

More than 30 slides have taken place on the working slope at Pingzhuang west surface mine since 1960. The total volume of slides amounts to 4 million cubic meters. The slides have affected the mining operation seriously. The three-dimensional reliability model for the progressive slope failure is used to study the 26th slide. In the model, the sliding mass is subdivided into a number of columns. The friction resistance on the base of each column from lateral force of the slope is considered. The local average values of cohesion and friction angle on the base of a column are determined from the random field theory. The first local failure probability, the failure transition probability, the first failure column and the three-dimensional failure sequence are obtained. The outcomes indicate that the progressive failure mechanism is indeed the failure mechanism of the 26th slide.
