This work describes the environmentally friendly technology for oxidation of ammonia (NH3) to form nitrogen at temperatures range from 423K to 673K by selective catalytic oxidation (SCO) over a nanosized Pt-Rh/γ-Al2O3catalyst prepared by the incipient wetness impregnation method of hexachloroplatinic acid (H2PtCl6) and rhodium (III) nitrate (Rh(NO3)3) with γ-Al2O3in a tubular fixed-bed flow quartz reactor (TFBR). The characterization of catalysts were thoroughly measured using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), threedimensional excitation-emission fluorescent matrix (EEFM) spectroscopy, UV-Vis absorption, dynamic lightscattering (DLS), zeta potential meter, and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The results demonstrated that at a temperature of 673K and an oxygen content of 4%, approximately 99% of the NH3was removed by catalytic oxidation over the nanosized Pt-Rh/γ-Al2O3catalyst. N2was the main product in NH3-SCO process. Further, it reveals that the oxidation of NH3was proceeds by the over-oxidation of NH3into NO, which was conversely reacted with the NH3to yield N2. Therefore, the application of nanosized Pt-Rh/γ-Al2O3catalyst can significantly enhance the catalytic activity toward NH3oxidation. One fluorescent peak for fresh catalyst was different with that of exhausted catalyst. It indicates that EEFM spectroscopy was proven to be an appropriate and effective method to characterize the Pt clusters in intrinsic emission from nanosized Pt-Rh/γ-Al2O3catalyst. Results obtained from the CV may explain the significant catalytic activity of the catalysts.

In this study, the oxidation of ammonia (NH3) to form nitrogen was investigated by selective catalytic oxidation (SCO) over a Pt-Rh binary catalyst fabricated by the incipient wetness impregnation process in a tubular fixed-bed flow quartz reactor (TFBR). The catalysts were analysed by three-dimensional excitation-emission fluorescent matrix (EEFM) spectroscopy, UV-Vis absorption, dynamic light-scattering (DLS), zeta potential measurements, and linear sweep voltammograms (LSV). At optimum conditions, namely, a temperature of 673 K and an oxygen content of 4%, nearly 100% of the NH3was removed by catalytic oxidation over the Pt-Rh binary catalyst. The main product of the NH3-SCO process was N2. Additionally, for the freshly prepared Pt-Rh binary catalyst, three peaks (at 235/295 nm, 245/315 nm, and 240/365 nm) were observed via EEFM; however, the peak with the highest emission wavelength disappeared over time as Pt-Rh binary catalyst was exhausted by NH3. These results show that EEFM spectroscopy, which enhances intrinsic emission Pt clusters in the Pt-Rh binary catalyst, is an effective method for characterizing this catalyst in catalytic treatment systems. The UV-Vis absorption spectra revealed that the bands associated with such octahedral platinum (IV) species were observed at about 350 nm. Moreover, the LSV reversible redox ability may explain the significant activity of the catalysts.

The lattice energies of a number of chiral drugs with known crystal structures were calculated using Dreiding II force field. The lattice energies, including van der Waals, Coulombic, and hydrogen‐bonding energies, of homochiral and racemic crystals of some ephedrine derivatives and of several other chiral drugs, are compared. The calculated energies are correlated with experimental data to probe the underlying intermolecular forces responsible for the formation of racemic species, racemic conglomerates, or racemic compounds, termed chiral discrimination. Comparison of the calculated energies among ephedrine derivatives reveals that a greater Coulombic energy corresponds to a higher melting temperature, while a greater van der Waals energy corresponds to a larger enthalpy of fusion. For seven pairs of homochiral and racemic compounds, correlation of the differences between the two forms in the calculated energies and experimental enthalpy of fusion suggests that the van der Waals interactions play a key role in the chiral discrimination in the crystalline state. For salts of the chiral drugs, the counter ions diminish chiral discrimination by increasing the Coulombic interactions. This result may explain why salt forms favor the formation of racemic conglomerates, thereby facilitating the resolution of racemates. © 2001 Wiley‐Liss, Inc. and the American Pharmaceutical Association J Pharm Sci 90:1523–1539, 2001
