- Abstract
The first observations of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have revolutionized our understanding of the Universe by identifying galaxies at redshift z≈ 13 (refs. 1–3). In addition, the discovery of many luminous galaxies at Cosmic Dawn (z> 10) has suggested that galaxies developed rapidly, in apparent tension with many standard models4–8. However, most of these galaxies lack spectroscopic confirmation, so their distances and properties are uncertain. Here we present JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey–Near-Infrared Spectrograph spectroscopic confirmation of two luminous galaxies at z=14.32−0.20+0.08and z= 13.90 ± 0.17. The spectra reveal ultraviolet continua with prominent Lyman-α breaks but no detected emission lines. This discovery proves that luminous galaxies were already in place 300 million years after the Big Bang and are more common than what was expected before JWST. The most distant of the two galaxies is unexpectedly luminous and is spatially resolved with a radius of 260 parsecs. Considering also the very steep ultraviolet slope of the second galaxy, we conclude that both are dominated by stellar continuum emission, showing that the excess of luminous galaxies in the early Universe cannot be entirely explained by accretion onto black holes. Galaxy formation models will need to address the existence of such large and luminous galaxies so early in cosmic history.

- Abstract
The management of water resources needs robust methods to efficiently reduce nitrate loads. Knowledge on where natural denitrification takes place in the subsurface is thereby essential. Nitrate is naturally reduced in anoxic environments and high‐resolution information of the redox interface, that is, the depth of the uppermost reduced zone is crucial to understand the variability of the denitrification potential. In this study we explore the opportunity to use random forest (RF) regression to model redox depth across Denmark at 100‐m resolution based on ~13,000 boreholes as training data. We highlight the importance of expert knowledge to guide the RF model in areas where our conceptual understanding is not represented correctly in the training data set by addition of artificial observations. We apply random forest regression kriging in which sequential Gaussian simulation models the RF residuals. The RF model reaches a R2score of 0.48 for an independent validation test. Including sequential Gaussian simulation honors observations through local conditioning, and the spread of 800 realizations can be utilized to map uncertainty. Emphasis is put on adequate handling of nonstationarities in variance and spatial correlation of the RF residuals. The RF residuals show no spatial correlation for large parts of the modeling domain, and a local variance scaling method is applied to account for the nonstationary variance. Moreover, we present and exemplify a framework where newly acquired field data can easily be integrated into random forest regression kriging to quickly update local models. Nutrients, such as nitrogen in form of nitrate are essential for plant growth. Despite their benefits, nutrient surplus can cause adverse health and ecological effects. In fact, nitrate leaching from agricultural fields is one of the major water resources management challenges in today's agricultural landscapes. During the transport through the subsurface, nitrate can potentially be degraded in anoxic layers below the redox interface. This is referred to as denitrification and its potential varies spatially depending on the local landscape. The location of the redox interface is thus essential knowledge toward a spatially differentiated water resources management. We applied a machine learning method to model the redox depth at 100m spatial resolution across Denmark, based on redox data obtained from ~13,000 boreholes and environmental variables that explain redox variability. We highlight the importance of expert knowledge in guiding the machine learning model by adding artificial observations in underrepresented landscapes. As an add‐on, a geostatistical model is used to honor local data at grid scale and quantify the spatial uncertainty elsewhere. Lastly, we outline and exemplify a framework that allows an easy integration of newly acquired field data for updating local models of the depth to the redox interface. A random forest model was trained to predict subsurface redox conditions at 100‐m resolution across DenmarkResiduals were simulated using geostatistics to estimate uncertainty and to generate multiple plausible realizationsA framework to quickly integrate newly acquired field data into local redox models was outlined and exemplified for a field site

- Abstract
Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least 4 m. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the 6.5 m James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 yr, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. We cite detailed reports on the design and the measured performance on orbit.

- Abstract
This paper characterizes the actual science performance of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), as determined from the six month commissioning period. We summarize the performance of the spacecraft, telescope, science instruments, and ground system, with an emphasis on differences from pre-launch expectations. Commissioning has made clear that JWST is fully capable of achieving the discoveries for which it was built. Moreover, almost across the board, the science performance of JWST is better than expected; in most cases, JWST will go deeper faster than expected. The telescope and instrument suite have demonstrated the sensitivity, stability, image quality, and spectral range that are necessary to transform our understanding of the cosmos through observations spanning from near-earth asteroids to the most distant galaxies.

- Abstract
The Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) is one of four science instruments aboard the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) that is to be launched later this decade. NIRSpec is sensitive in the wavelength range from 0.6 to 5.0 m and operates at temperatures ≤ 40 K. It offers multi-object, fixed slit, and integral field spectroscopy with seven selectable dispersers. The on-ground spectrophotometric calibration of the instrument is performed by means of continuum and line emission lamps. NIRSpec also contains an internal calibration assembly (CAA) that will provide the wavelength and radiometric calibration in orbit. Due to thermal constraints, the CAA features low power tungsten filament lamps in combination with long-pass and Fabry-Perot-like interference filters, which need to be calibrated at instrument level. We will report on the wavelength calibration of the NIRSpec flight model and the CAA, carried out during the first cryogenic performance testing.

- Abstract
The Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) is one of four science instruments on board the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). NIRSpec offers multi-object, fixed slit, and integral field spectroscopy. There are eight optical elements mounted on the grating wheel assembly (GWA), six gratings, a double-pass prism, and a mirror. The precise knowledge of the position and tilt of these elements is critical for target acquisition and an accurate extraction and calibration of science data. We present the concept of calibrating the position/tilt sensors during the NIRSpec flight model ground calibration campaign, the performance of the sensors and first results concerning the GWA repeatability.

SPECIAL operations (Military science) ,MILITARY relations - Abstract
The article discusses the Danish military operations in Helmand, Afghanistan in 2006-2010. It says that the Danish Teams two and three conducted operations different from the operations of the other teams partly because of the Taliban forces opposing the Danish troops. It also states that the main factor influencing the country's involvement is the directives and changing priorities emanating from a British-dominated brigade that the Danish contingents were part of.

- Abstract
We describe how the James Webb Space Telescope(JWST) Near-Infrared Spectrograph's (NIRSpec) detectors will be read out, and present a model of how noise scales with the number of multiple nondestructive reads sampling up the ramp. We believe that this noise model, which is validated using real and simulated test data, is applicable to most astronomical near-infrared instruments. We describe some nonideal behaviors that have been observed in engineering-grade NIRSpec detectors, and demonstrate that they are unlikely to affect NIRSpec sensitivity, operations, or calibration. These include a HAWAII-2RG reset anomaly and random telegraph noise (RTN). Using real test data, we show that the reset anomaly is (1) very nearly noiseless and (2) can be easily calibrated out. Likewise, we show that large-amplitude RTN affects only a small and fixed population of pixels. It can therefore be tracked using standard pixel operability maps.

20. The diffuse UV background

- Abstract
The diffuse radiation field in the UV (900–3,000 Å) affects the structure of galactic molecular clouds and conveys important information concerning the physical characteristics and spatial distribution of gas and dust in the Universe. Continuum emission in this range is probably dominated by interstellar dust scattering in our Galaxy. For view directions and angular resolutions allowing observations in the rifts between galactic dust clouds, the background due to the integrated light of spiral galaxies may be detected, providing important information on their structure ana evolution. The redshifted emission from an intergalactic medium maybe observable in the regions between nearby bright galaxies. Present observations provide weak constraints on the radiation field required to ionize the intergalactic medium at the level required by the Gunn–Peterson test.

22. The Hubble Space Telescope: ‘Conscious Expectations of the Unexpected'
- Author

Jakobsen, Peter
- Abstract
The eagerly anticipated but much delayed launch of the Hubble Space Telescope in April 1990 marked the start of astronomy's largest ‘big science’ project to date. As was widely reported in the media, the first images taken with the observatory revealed that a serious manufacturing error had been made when the 2·4 m primary mirror of the telescope was ground and polished some 10 years earlier. The project scientist for the European Space Agency's involvement in the project recalls some of the events leading up to this discovery, describes the current scientific performance of the observatory and outlines current plans for repairing the telescope.
