AbstractAn interdisciplinary Pop-Up Learning Community (PLC) allowed students from various disciplines with different levels of content knowledge to discuss their perspectives on and beliefs about climate change. The impact of this event on students’ climate change beliefs was gauged by a survey from the Yale Project on Climate Change Communication. This survey, the Six Americas Super Short Survey, consists of four questions relating to climate change belief. During the event, students participated in various activities, including faculty modeling of discussions about climate change using and highlighting their disciplinary perspectives and analysis skills, communications exercises, interdisciplinary table discussions, and writing in response to a social media message. After the conclusion of the event, students submitted reflections on their experiences at the PLC, which supplemented data collected during the event. Students gained an understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of climate change discussions and applied general education skills and knowledge to spoken and written conversations about climate change.

AbstractEnhancing wellbeing amongst partners of current serving military personnel is a growing area of interest and concern. Because of their military connection, partners of Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel experience unique challenges compared to those faced by the broader civilian community. This paper sought to undertake an investigation of the most important risk and protective factors, which influence wellbeing in this cohort. This cross-sectional study gathered responses from 444 participants (partners of current serving military members) through an online survey. Bivariate and multivariate regression models found higher wellbeing scores were associated with younger partners, higher military member rank brackets, existing social support in their location, and partners who were in their desired employment status. Additionally, higher COVID-19 impacts were associated with lower wellbeing scores. Moving forward, interventions, which target social support, desired employment, and periods of national crisis requiring a military response should be the focus. The findings of this study impact policy and programs which aim to provide support to military-connected families.

Due to the gap between cisgender women eligible for and those accessing pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention, it is critical to understand knowledge of and attitudes toward PrEP among HIV-vulnerable women. PrEP utilization is particularly low among African American women in the USA. Family planning clinics provide key access points to reach HIV-vulnerable African American women as well as to translate research findings into clinical practice. Our study aimed to (1) describe the awareness of and interest in PrEP among African American cisgender women attending a family planning clinic and (2) document the barriers and facilitators to PrEP uptake among these women. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with sexually active African American women of reproductive age attending a family planning clinic. Descriptive statistics were used to characterize the sample, and bivariate analysis was used to detect difference between categorical and outcome variables. In our survey (N= 109), over 80% of participants listed not knowing PrEP was available as the primary reason for not currently taking PrEP. Seventy percent reported they would probably or definitely like to take PrEP – demonstrating that barriers to uptake might stem from knowledge deficits rather than attitudes toward prevention. Study findings have the potential to inform strategies to increase awareness of PrEP as an HIV prevention option as well as to equip women with greater self-efficacy to access PrEP in family planning settings.

Vaccination is one of the most effective strategies to control the spread of COVID-19 and reduce morbidity and mortality; however, rapid and equitable vaccine distribution is required to achieve such outcomes. We conducted a basic interrupted time-series analysis to examine the short-term impacts of a citywide vaccine equity plan, the Protect Chicago Plus (PCP) plan. We compared vaccine coverage in zip codes in Chicago with high COVID-19 vulnerability, as identified from the Chicago COVID-19 Community Vulnerability Index, with coverage in all other zip codes in Chicago. From our analysis, we observed that implementation of PCP coincided with reduced vaccination disparities between Chicago communities with low and high vulnerability indexes over time. In our analysis of vaccination coverage before program implementation, vaccination coverage climbed nearly twice as fast among non-PCP zip codes (0.19% per day) than among PCP zip codes (0.10% per day) or by 0.09 percentage points (P< .001). In model analysis after program implementation, zip codes prioritized for the program had 0.42% additional coverage per day as compared with 0.27% per day for non-PCP zip codes. Our findings suggest that such programs may improve vaccine equity, but additional research is needed to better understand the longer-term effects of citywide vaccination strategies on vaccine uptake.

US environmental policy and ecology have become increasingly popular, yet politically polarized in the last 50 years. Despite increases in popularity overall, environmentalism has become and continues to be disregarded, or even opposed, among evangelical Christian groups. Many psychological and sociological factors may explain this link. A study was conducted at a Christian university in South Carolina to determine the contribution of theological, psychological, and political factors related to evangelicalism and their relationship with environmentalism. The results indicate that doctrinal and political ideologies like evangelical doctrine, political conservatism, and eschatological attitudes about the end of the world each are independently related to negative environmental attitudes. These findings indicate that environmental appeals to young evangelicals need to address several unique factors.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is effectively treated with targeted therapies including Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitors and BCL2 antagonists. When these become ineffective, treatment options are limited. Positive transcription elongation factor complex (P-TEFb), a heterodimeric protein complex composed of cyclin dependent kinase 9 (CDK9) and cyclin T1, functions to regulate short half-life transcripts by phosphorylation of RNA Polymerase II (POLII). These transcripts are frequently dysregulated in hematologic malignancies; however, therapies targeting inhibition of P-TEFb have not yet achieved approval for cancer treatment. VIP152 kinome profiling revealed CDK9 as the main enzyme inhibited at 100 nM, with over a 10-fold increase in potency compared with other inhibitors currently in development for this target. VIP152 induced cell death in CLL cell lines and primary patient samples. Transcriptome analysis revealed inhibition of RNA degradation through the AU-Rich Element (ARE) dysregulation. Mechanistically, VIP152 inhibits the assembly of P-TEFb onto the transcription machinery and disturbs binding partners. Finally, immune competent mice engrafted with CLL-like cells of Eµ-MTCP1 over-expressing mice and treated with VIP152 demonstrated reduced disease burden and improvement in overall survival compared to vehicle-treated mice. These data suggest that VIP152 is a highly selective inhibitor of CDK9 that represents an attractive new therapy for CLL.

DESIGN: Cross-sectional observational study. SETTING: Neuropsychological assessment laboratory and an instrumented vehicle on a 35-mile route on urban and rural roads. PARTICIPANTS: One hundred eleven older adult drivers (aged 65-89; mean age 72.3) and 80 middle-aged drivers (aged 40-64; mean age 57.2). MEASUREMENTS: Explanatory variables included age, neuropsychological measures (cognitive, visual, and motor), and a composite cognitive score (COGSTAT). The outcome variable was the safety error count, as classified according to video review using a standardized taxonomy. RESULTS: Older drivers committed an average of 35.8 [+ or -] 12.8 safety errors per drive, compared with an average of 27.8 [+ or -] 9.8 for middle-aged drivers (P CONCLUSION: Driving errors in older adults tend to increase, even in the absence of neurological diagnoses. Age-related decline in cognitive abilities, vision, and motor skills can explain some of this increase. Changes in visuospatial and visuomotor abilities appear to be particularly associated with unsafe driving in old age. Background: Disparities in HIV incidence and PrEP use among Black ciswomen remain. We examine factors associated with PrEP persistence using mixed methods. Setting: Black ciswomen in Chicago, IL, prescribed PrEP at a federally qualified health center (FQHC). Methods: We used electronic health data to determine PrEP persistence (Proportion of Days Covered ≥86% at 6 months) and tested demographic and clinical factors in logistic regressions. We interviewed eight Black ciswomen, purposefully selected by PrEP persistence. Results: Among 112 Black ciswomen, 18% were persistent. In adjusted models, neighborhood, visit reason (at initiation), and initiation year were significantly associated with persistence. Qualitatively, we found little evidence of cost or adherence as barriers; participants reported low community awareness, importance of providers, and concerns around stigma, side effects, and pregnancy while using PrEP. Conclusion: While persistence among Black ciswomen was low, patients were often making decisions based on perceived HIV risk. We identified real-world barriers to address in future interventions.

The progressive ratio procedure is used across fields to assess motivation for different reinforcers, define the effects of experimental interventions on motivation, and determine experience‐dependent changes in motivation. However, less is known about how operant training schedules affect performance on this widely utilized task. Here we designed an experiment to examine the effect of variable ratio versus fixed ratio training schedules of reinforcement on progressive ratio performance while holding other performance variables constant between groups. We found a robust increase in maximum ratio completed between the pretest and posttraining test highlighting a robust training effect on progressive ratio performance. However, it did not matter if the training was under a fixed or variable ratio schedule. Additionally, we show that neither individual rates during training nor extinction responding correlated with maximum ratio achieved during the sessions. Finally, we show that rates during the training sessions do correlate with extinction performance, suggesting that these variables measure a different aspect of performance that does not predict motivation.

The current goals are to screen all infants by 1 month of age, confirm hearing loss with audiologic examination by 3 months of age, and treat with comprehensive early intervention services before 6 months of age. Background: The antitumor activity of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors is thought to involve COX-2 enzyme inhibition and apoptosis induction, but it is unclear whether COX-2 inhibition is required for apoptosis. Different COX-2 inhibitors have similar I[C.sup.50] values (concentration for 50% inhibition) for COX-2 inhibition but differ considerably in their abilities to induce apoptosis, suggesting the involvement of a COX-2-independent pathway in apoptosis. To test this hypothesis, we investigated the effect of COX-2 depletion on apoptosis and performed a structure-activity analysis of the COX-2 inhibitor celecoxib in the androgen-independent prostate cancer cell line PC-3. Methods: Tetracycline-inducible (Tet-On) COX-2 antisense clones were isolated to assess the effect of COX-2 expression on cell viability and sensitivity to apoptosis induced by COX-2 inhibitors. Untreated Tet-On clones differentially expressed COX-2, and doxycycline-treated clones were depleted of COX-2. We synthesized and characterized various celecoxib derivatives with various COX-2 inhibitory activities and determined their apoptotic activity in PC-3 cells. Apoptosis was assessed with four tests. Results: In contrast to the effect of COX-2 inhibitors, which induced apoptosis, COX-2 depletion did not induce cell death. Susceptibility to COX-2 inhibitor-induced apoptosis was independent of the level of COX-2 expression. Structure-activity analysis found no correlation between apoptosis induction and COX-2 inhibition. Some celecoxib derivatives that lacked COX-2 inhibitory activity facilitated apoptosis and vice versa. Moreover, celecoxib and apoptosis-active celecoxib derivatives mediated cell death by inhibiting the same pathway. Conclusion: We have dissociated the apoptosis-inducing activity from the COX-2 inhibitory activity by structural modifications of the COX-2 inhibitor celecoxib. This separation of activities may provide a molecular basis for the development of new classes of apoptosis-inducing agents.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test the effect of acoustical foam on the level of noise inside the incubator and examine neonatal response behaviors to changes in environmental noise. Method: The study used a repeated measure, within subject, comparative design. Data on 65 premature neonates were collected over a 14-month period at a large teaching hospital in Delaware. Sound levels, oxygen saturation, and infant states were measured and recorded during three study conditions: pre-study neonate in incubator, neonate in incubator with 5 x 5 x 1 inch acoustical foam pieces placed in each of four corners, and post-study recovery of neonate in incubator with foam removed. All state assessments were measured with oxygen saturation and sound level measurements every 2 minutes of the study for a total 40 minutes. Findings: The findings demonstrate a significant treatment effect of acoustical foam on decreasing environmental noise measurements inside the incubator (p = 0.006). Findings also demonstrate significantly changed neonatal state response behaviors with decreasing environmental noise measurements inside the incubator (p = 0.00). Conclusions: The results of this study support the use of acoustical foam as one method of environmental noise management in the intensive care nursery. Because there was a significant correlation between higher noise levels and oxygen support therapy, the findings suggest that special nursing considerations should be taken when caring for ventilator-dependent infants. Small-footprint databases with selective-replication capabilities enable IT managers to put only the data a particular salesperson or other field operative needs onto their laptop. Small-footprint databases fulfill a need by providing needed information in a form that is easily, readily accessible. Moreover, as hardware devices continue to evolve and advance, even handheld devices and smart phones are able to accommodate some form of a mobile database and synchronize it with a central server. Small-footprint databases typically are defined by the minimum memory needed to support the software's kernel, which varies from about 2MB for a laptop version to 50KB for a handheld database.

GCSI stopped pursuing new clients and decided to concentrate on its existing ones after the CRM system revealed that 60% of its revenues come from a mere 20% of its customer base. The experience of GCSI serve to highlight the value of CRM systems. The latter are designed to uncover valuable customer information while IT departments can automate front-office tasks such as sales, marketing and customer support.

The Dept. of Motor Vehicles of Alaska opted to reface rather than replace its mainframe computer to reduce waiting times for vehicle license renewals. A Web interface allows online transactions through the Internet while an interactive voice response system serve those who only have telephones to use for online access. The system will soon be extended to include transactions involving driver's license renewal and driver's test scheduling.

We leverage a unique longitudinal dataset—98 interviews with 30 college students—to investigate young people’s explanations for gender inequality over time and the implications of those explanations. Through five waves and four years of interviews, we show that young people struggled to internalize structural explanations, instead favoring explanations that conceptualized gender as an individual attribute. Individual perspectives were so intransigent because of respondents’ adherence to what we call the agency myth, the latent cultural idea that individuals, particularly women, have the power to overcome gender inequality through strategic behaviors. The agency myth offered young people a sense of self-efficacy, but prevented their imagining broader solutions for social change. Those who were able to think structurally did so only after rejecting the agency myth. This article shows how the durability of individualist perspectives contributes to persistent gender inequality by privileging individualized solutions over more effective structural ones. We discuss how individual subscription to the agency myth is structured by young people’s intersecting identities, and how the agency myth can be applied to other axes of inequality.
