The U-phase in the Al72Pd12.8Co15.2 alloy was studied under non-equilibrium (casting, differential thermal analysis) and near-equilibrium (long-term annealing) conditions to consider its compositional homogeneity. In the investigation, scanning electron microscopy including energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and differential thermal analysis were used. Contrary to the finding reported for the Al69.8Pd13.8Co16.4 alloy, the results obtained for the investigated Al72Pd12.8Co15.2 alloy did not confirm the compositional heterogeneity of the near-equilibrium U-phase after annealing at 700°C for 2000 h and at 850°C for 500 h.

The microstructure characterization of Al73Mn23Pd4 and Al73Mn21Pd6 alloys was done after annealing at 900°C for 312 h and subsequent water quenching, as well as after thermal cycling. DTA and EDX/WDX/SEM techniques were used in the investigation. It was found out that the alloys consist of the single ternary T-phase after annealing and water quenching. The DTA experiment confirmed the stability of this phase also at lower temperatures. After DTA, the alloys exhibited double-phase microstructure consisting of the ternary T-phase and probably the icosahedral I-phase. It was proved an incongruent transformation of the ternary T-phase into the liquid and vice versa.

The ionic conductivity and permittivity of glasses based on ZrF4, BaF2, LaF3, AlF3 and NaF (ZBLAN) or PbF2, InF3, BaF2, AlF3 and LaF3 (PIBAL) are studied. The influence of the glass composition on the glass transition temperature (Tg) and on the crystallization temperature (Tx) is reported. For all ZBLAN glasses the temperature dependencies of the ionic conductivity are close one to another (s500 = 8(2)·10-6 S/cm) and their conduction activation enthalpies are equal to 0.82(1)eV. From the point of view of the ionic conductivity, the best glass compositions are the PIBAL50 (50 m/o PbF2) and PIB45 ( 45 m/o PbF2).

Continuous heating as well as isothermal differential scanning calorimetry was used to study the transformation of Fe73.5Cu1Nb3Si13.5B9ribbons to a crystalline state. The scanning ‘crystallization’ peak was small and wide, with a long high-temperature tail. It shifted to higher temperatures after pre-annealing. The isothermal transformation signals always decreased monotonically, only the amplitude changing with temperature, but not the position. All of these abnormal characteristics may be explained in terms of a grain-growth mechanism, involving the coarsening of already existing crystal nuclei to give the crystalline material.

Results of positron annihilation experiments on bulk hexadecane and hexadecane filled into silica gel nano pores will be reported. The lifetime and Doppler broadening measurements were performed at the temperature range (14-300) K. The annihilation data were combined with output of the differential scanning calorimetry at range from 270K up to 300K.
