The article presents an overview of the ethical issues of transracial and transcultural adoptions occurring within the United states. In 2000, the Children's Bureau of the United States defined transracial adoption as one in which the race of the child differs from that of at least one adoptive parent. Historically, race and class have played particularly powerful, interconnecting roles in the United States in terms of children who are placed for adoption and prospective adoptive parents who are given the opportunity to adopt. From an ethical perspective, there are growing concerns that white families have been able to, in effect, corner the market on all babies available for adoption. Other ethical concerns are associated with inherent differences in power among adult parties to an adoption. Ethical issues in infant adoptions also arise in connection with the interests of children. A focus on the ethics of adoption is critical if it is to continue to serve children as the primary beneficiaries.
