Medical professionals are facing an information crisis. Medical knowledge is expanding and changing at an unprecedented rate, yet practitioners often do not become aware of important advances in a timely manner. While more than 360,000 articles are published in medical journals every year, knowledge diffusion to clinicians is typically slow. For instance, one study found that two years after wide publication, fewer than 50% of general practitioners knew that laser surgery could save the sight of some of their diabetic patients. Retrieval systems, using concepts and modifiers entered directly by clinicians or automatically by electronic medical records systems, could rapidly display chinks of relevant summary information and provide links to supporting evidence and analysis. To realize this vision, a combination of content, information science methods, and technology is required. Clinicians need access to a wide variety of information including medical literature, expert summaries as found in textbooks and guidelines, information on medications and diagnostics tests, and procedural knowledge such as health-plan coverage or institutional policies. For instance, MEDLINE, the nine-million-record bibliographic database produced by the National Library of Medicine, contains citations to the last 30 years of medical literature and has been available for three decades.

Virtual patient records will impact health care internationally the way the Internet and the World Wide Web transformed global communications. At the same time that political and sociological conditions are causing a revolution in health care, advanced technologies promise to introduce changes even more radical. Health care has long lagged far behind other industries in adopting information technologies. Purpose The purpose of the study is to investigate critical factors affecting individuals’ intention to adopt internet of things (IoT) products in healthcare.Design/methodology/approach An integrated model was developed based on technology acceptance model (TAM), innovation diffusion theory (IDT), technological innovativeness (TI), protection motivation theory and privacy calculus theory. The model was tested with 426 respondents (222 females, 204 males) using partial least square structural equation model with all data grouped by gender.Findings Based on the results of the complete model, perceived advantage (PA), image and perceived ease of use (PEOU) constructs have a significant effect on intention to adopt IoT healthcare technology products. The results show that for females, compatibility and trialability have more impact on PEOU whereas for males PA has more impact on PEOU. Image, perceived privacy risk, perceived vulnerability have more impact on males when compared to females.Research limitations/implications Research conducted only among Turkish people.Originality/value This study investigated adoption of future technology, “internet of things”, products in healthcare from a behavioral perspective by integrating various theories. The reason is that before launching any technology into the market, its facilitative factors should be researched for the people who are going to use this in their daily routine. This article focuses on a massive project launched by David M. Lawrence, CEO of the Oakland, California-based health-maintenance organization (HMO) Kaiser Permanente, to move all of the operations of Kaiser to the Internet, as of February 2000. For starters, he plans to create digital medical records for each of the 9 million members of Kaiser and to electronically link its 361 hospitals and clinics with its 10,000 doctors, nurses and dentists. Kaiser needs powerful medicine. In 1998, the HMO lost $288 million on sales of $15.5 billion, largely because it underestimated the amount of care it would have to give and had to switch patients to more expensive non-Kaiser physicians and specialists. The Kaiser experience shows, however, that there are likely to be bumps along the road to savings. Since embarking on its Internet effort in 1998, the HMO has fallen nearly a year behind schedule. Despite the progress, Kaiser and the rest of the industry have a long way to go. Lawrence plans to lead the charge. Sure, he wants to cut costs and make Kaiser as efficient as possible. But he also thinks the Web can help Kaiser deliver something grander.

This article focuses on the trend among physicians to be net savvy, in order to get business benefits in their profession. Most recently, the Internet and Websites are being used by physicians in private practice as a competitive business tool. An exploratory study of physicians in private practice was conducted to investigate physicians' use of the Internet as an information and marketing tool. Respondents to the survey includes 86 members of a northeast chapter of the American Medical Association. They found that while approximately 50% of the physicians were using the Internet to access professional medical information and perceived it to be useful, only 14% said they would recommend the Internet as a medical information resource fore patients. The demographic features of the practices such as medical specialization, size, and age appeared to make little difference in whether a medical practice was a Web Technology Adopter or not. Practices with fewer than 50% managed care patients were significantly more likely to either have a Web site or have plans to develop one. Seventy percent of the Adopters indicated that less than one-half of their practices' patients were enrolled in managed care. This compares to 36% of the other group reporting fewer than one-half managed care patients. Also, practices that currently have a Web presence were asked to assess the impact of the site on the practice.

In fact, we are inundated with scientific information to the extent that now we need specific skills to know how to access clinical articles and critically appraise what we find to see if they are relevant to guiding our decision-making or answering specific patient questions. This goes beyond the skills that most of us learned in conducting a literature search. As much as information and communications technology are an integral part of our social world, their use in clinical decision-making and transforming the educational environment is only in its infancy. Thus, the aims of this article are to 1) review the PubMed Clinical Queries and Limits features for efficiently accessing the highest levels of scientific information, and 2) highlight Internet/Web resources that can be incorporated into assignments to facilitate student-centered learning.
