1. Solid Rheological Properties of PBT-Based Vitrimers

Abstract: We present an experimental investigation of the mechanical properties of solid vitrimer samples obtained by incorporating a diepoxide into commercial poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) in the presence of a Zn(II) catalyst using batch compounder and injection-molding machines. Tensile experiments were carried out at different temperatures (80, 120, and 160 °C) below the melting point (220 °C) and with various diepoxide concentrations (0, 1, and 2 wt %). We found that vitrimer plastic deformation mechanisms differ drastically from those of the PBT precursor and more generally from the regular behavior of other semi-crystalline polymers. In PBT vitrimers, strain localization (necking) is very weak and can even be suppressed. This type of behavior is due to the increase in strain hardening caused by vitrimer cross-linking. The creep resistance and stiffness of PBT vitrimers are significantly higher than those of pristine PBT. We found that vitrimer modification of PBT at moderate levels improves dimensional stability without inducing brittleness. These promising results highlight the need to find processes which enable significant production levels of these new materials. In the Perspective section, we briefly present a method to produce PBT-based vitrimers using continuous reactive extrusion.

Abstract: The measurement of an excess in the cosmic-ray electron spectrum between 300 and 800 GeV by the ATIC experiment has – together with the PAMELA detection of a rise in the positron fraction up to ≈100 GeV – motivated many interpretations in terms of dark matter scenarios; alternative explanations assume a nearby electron source like a pulsar or supernova remnant. Here we present a measurement of the cosmic-ray electron spectrum with H.E.S.S. starting at 340 GeV. While the overall electron flux measured by H.E.S.S. is consistent with the ATIC data within statistical and systematic errors, the H.E.S.S. data exclude a pronounced peak in the electron spectrum as suggested for interpretation by ATIC. The H.E.S.S. data follow a power-law spectrum with spectral index of 3.0±0.1(stat.)±0.3(syst.), which steepens at about 1 TeV.

Abstract: Aims. This article presents very-high-energy (VHE; E> 100 GeV) data from the γ-ray binary PSR B1259-63 as taken during the years 2005, 2006 and before as well as shortly after the 2007 periastron passage. These data extend the knowledge of the lightcurve of this object to all phases of the 3.4 year binary orbit. The lightcurve constrains physical mechanisms present in this TeV source.

Abstract: Observations of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae (NGC 104), which contains at least 23 ms pulsars, were performed with the HESS telescope system. The observations lead to an upper limit of $F(E>800\ {\rm GeV}) < 6.7 \times 10^{-13}~{\rm cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$on the integral γ-ray photon flux from 47 Tucanae. Considering millisecond pulsars as the unique potential source of γ-rays in the globular cluster, constraints based on emission models are derived: on the magnetic field in the average pulsar nebula and on the conversion efficiency of spin-down power to γ-ray photons or to relativistic leptons.

Abstract: We discovered the >100 GeV γ-ray source, HESS J1713-381, apparently associated with the shell-type supernova remnant (SNR) CTB 37B, using HESS in 2006. In 2007 we performed X-ray follow-up observations with Chandrawith the aim of identifying a synchrotron counterpart to the TeV source and/or thermal emission from the SNR shell. These new Chandradata, together with additional TeV data, allow us to investigate the nature of this object in much greater detail than was previously possible. The new X-ray data reveal thermal emission from a ~4'region in close proximity to the radio shell of CTB 37B. The temperature of this emission implies an age for the remnant of ~5000 years and an ambient gas density of ~0.5 cm-3. Both these estimates are considerably uncertain due to the asymmetry of the SNR and possible modifications of the kinematics due to efficient cosmic ray (CR) acceleration. A bright (≈7 $\times$10-13erg cm-2s-1) and unresolved (<1″) source (CXOU J171405.7-381031), with a soft (Γ≈3.3) non-thermal spectrum is also detected in coincidence with the radio shell. Absorption indicates a column density consistent with the thermal emission from the shell, suggesting a genuine association rather than a chance alignment. The observed TeV morphology is consistent with an origin in the complete shell of CTB 37B. The lack of diffuse non-thermal X-ray emission suggests an origin of the γ-ray emission via the decay of neutral pions produced in interactions of protons and nuclei, rather than inverse Compton (IC) emission from relativistic electrons.

Abstract: Aims. HESS J1745-303 is an extended, unidentified VHE (very high energy) gamma-ray source discovered using HESS in the Galactic Plane Survey. Since no obvious counterpart has previously been found in longer-wavelength data, the processes that power the VHE emission are not well understood.

Abstract: Aims. The BL Lac object RGB J0152+017($z=0.080$) was predicted to be a very high-energy (VHE; >100 GeV) γ-ray source, due to its high X-ray and radio fluxes. Our aim is to understand the radiative processes by investigating the observed emission and its production mechanism using the High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) experiment.

Abstract: Context.The detection of gamma rays in the very-high-energy (VHE) energy range (100 GeV–100 TeV) provides a direct view of the parent population of ultra-relativistic particles found in astrophysical sources. For this reason, VHE gamma rays are useful for understanding the underlying astrophysical processes in non-thermal sources.

Abstract: Aims.Our aim is to study the production mechanism for very-high-energy (VHE; >100 GeV) γ-rays in distant active galactic nuclei (AGN) and use the observed VHE spectrum to derive limits on the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL). We also want to determine physical quantities through the modeling of the object's broad-band spectral energy distribution (SED).

Abstract: Context.The blazar 1ES 1101-232was observed with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) of Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (ACT) in 2004 and 2005, for a live time of 43 h. VHE (E> 1011eV) γ-rays were detected for the first time from this object.

25. Predictions of Cu toxicity in three aquatic species using bioavailability tools in four Swedish soft freshwaters

Abstract: The EU member countries are currently implementing the Water Framework Directive to promote better water quality and overview of their waters. The directive recommends the usage of bioavailability tools, such as biotic ligand models (BLM), for setting environmental quality standards (EQS) for metals. These models are mainly calibrated towards a water chemistry found in the south central parts of Europe. However, freshwater chemistry in Scandinavia often has higher levels of DOC (dissolved organic carbon), Fe and Al combined with low pH compared to the central parts of Europe. In this study, copper (Cu) toxicities derived by two different BLM software were compared to bioassay-derived toxicity for Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, Daphnia magnaand D. pulexin four Swedish soft water lakes. A significant under- and over prediction between measured and BLM calculated toxicity was found; for P. subcapitatain three of the four lakes and for the daphnids in two of the four lakes. The bioassay toxicity showed the strongest relationship with Fe concentrations and DOC. Furthermore, DOC was the best predictor of BLM results, manifested as positive relationships with calculated LC50and NOEC for P. subcapitataand D. magna, respectively. Results from this study indicate that the two investigated BLM softwares have difficulties calculating Cu toxicity, foremost concerning the algae. The analyses made suggest that there are different chemical properties affecting the calculated toxicity as compared to the measured toxicity. We recommend that tests including Al, Fe and DOC properties as BLM input parameters should be conducted. This to observe if a better consensus between calculated and measured toxicity can be established.

26. Temperament traits of beef calves measured under field conditions and their relationships to performance1

Abstract: A total of 3,050 German Angus (Aberdeen Angus × German dual-purpose breeds), Charolais, Hereford, Limousin, and German Simmental calves were used to examine temperament traits of beef cattle using 2 different test procedures. The chute test and the flight-speed test have been validated in terms of routine on-farm applicability. Behavior tests were performed in 2006 and 2007 on 24 commercial beef cattle farms located in the northern and eastern part of Germany. A single, trained observer assigned subjective scores to characterize the behavior of each animal during restraint in the head gate (calm, restless shifting, squirming, vigorous movement, violent struggling) and when leaving the chute (walk, trot, run, jumping out of the chute). Breed was a significant source of variation in chute scores and flight-speed scores (P< 0.001). Charolais and Limousin cattle had the greatest scores in both traits, whereas Herefords had the least (P< 0.001) chute scores. German Angus and Hereford calves had the least (P< 0.001) flight-speeds, indicating that these breeds have a more favorable temperament. Temperament scores differed significantly between male and female calves (P< 0.01), with females scoring better for both traits. Average daily BW gains of the calves were significantly influenced by effects of breed (P< 0.001) and sex (P< 0.001) of the calves. Heritabilities were estimated for chute- and flight-speed scores of beef cattle. They were least for chute score and flight-speed score of Limousin cattle with values of 0.11. In contrast, greatest heritabilities were 0.33 for chute score and 0.36 for flight-speed score of Hereford cattle. Genetic correlations were estimated among both temperament traits, with values between 0.57 and 0.98. Chute scores and visual flight-speed scores were negatively correlated with daily BW gain of the calves in most breeds. The results presented in this paper indicate that on-farm evaluation of beef cattle temperament is possible, either using the chute test or the flight-speed test. Genetic selection seems to be promising to improve temperament traits of beef cattle without decreasing production traits like ADG of the calves.

Abstract: Aims. This article presents very-high-energy (VHE; E > 100?GeV) data from the ?-ray binary PSR?B1259-63 as taken during the years 2005, 2006 and before as well as shortly after the 2007 periastron passage. These data extend the knowledge of the lightcurve of this object to all phases of the 3.4?year binary orbit. The lightcurve constrains physical mechanisms present in this TeV source.Methods. Observations of VHE ?-rays with the HESS telescope array using the Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Technique were performed. The HESS?instrument features an angular resolution of < 0.1? and an energy resolution of < 20%. Gamma-ray events in an energy range of 0.5-70?TeV were recorded. From these data, energy spectra and lightcurve with a monthly time sampling were extracted.Results. VHE ?-ray emission from PSR?B1259-63?was detected with an overall significance of 9.5?standard deviations using 55h of exposure, obtained from April to August 2007. The monthly flux of ?-rays during the observation period was measured, yielding VHE lightcurve data for the early pre-periastron phase of the system for the first time. No spectral variability was found on timescales of months. The spectrum is described by a power law with a photon index of ? = 2.8 ?0.2stat?0.2sysand flux normalisation ?0= (1.1 ?0.1stat?0.2sys) ? 10-12?TeV-1?cm-2?s-1. PSR?B1259-63?was also monitored in 2005 and 2006, far from periastron passage, comprising 8.9?h and 7.5?h of exposure, respectively. No significant excess of ?-rays is seen in those observations.Conclusions. PSR B1259-63? has been re-confirmed as a variable TeV ?-ray emitter. The firm detection of VHE photons emitted at a true anomaly ??-0.35 of the pulsar orbit, i.e.?already ~50?days prior to the periastron passage, disfavors the stellar disc target scenario as a primary emission mechanism, based on current knowledge about the companion star's disc inclination, extension, and density profile.

Abstract: Aims. Very-high-energy (VHE; ?100?GeV) ?-rays are expected from ?-ray bursts (GRBs) in some scenarios. Exploring this photon energy regime is necessary for understanding the energetics and properties of GRBs. Methods. GRBs have been one of the prime targets for the HESS experiment, which makes use of four Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) to detect VHE ?-rays. Dedicated observations of 32?GRB positions were made in the years 2003?2007 and a search for VHE ?-ray counterparts of these GRBs was made. Depending on the visibility and observing conditions, the observations mostly start minutes to hours after the burst and typically last two hours.Results. Results from observations of 22?GRB positions are presented. Evidence of a VHE signal was found neither in observations of any individual GRBs nor from stacking data from subsets of GRBs with higher expected VHE flux according to a model-independent ranking scheme. Upper limits for the VHE??-ray flux from the GRB positions were derived. For those GRBs with measured redshifts, differential upper limits at the energy threshold after correcting for absorption due to extra-galactic background light are also presented.

Abstract: Aims. A detailed study of the spectrum and variability of the source HESS J1745-290 in the Galactic Center (GC) region using new data from the H.E.S.S. array of Cherenkov telescopes is presented. Flaring activity and quasi periodic oscillations (QPO) of HESS J1745-290 are investigated.Methods. The image analysis is performed with a combination of a semi-analytical shower model and the statistical moment-based Hillas technique. The spectrum and lightcurves of HESS J1745-290 are derived with a likelihood method based on a spectral shape hypothesis. Rayleigh tests and Fourier analysis of the H.E.S.S. GC signal are used to study the periodicity of the source.Results. With a three-fold increase in statistics compared to previous work, a deviation from a simple power law spectrum is detected for the first time. The measured energy spectrum over the three years 2004, 2005 and 2006 of data taking is compatible with both a power law spectrum with an exponential cut-off and a broken power law spectrum. The curvature of the energy spectrum is likely to be intrinsic to the photon source, as opposed to effects of interstellar absorption. The power law spectrum with an exponential cut-off is characterized by a photon index of 2.10 ? 0.04stat? 0.10systand a cut-off energy at 15.7 ? 3.4stat? 2.5systTeV. The broken power law spectrum exhibits spectral indices of 2.02 ? 0.08stat? 0.10systand 2.63 ? 0.14stat? 0.10systwith a break energy at 2.57 ? 0.19stat? 0.44systTeV. No significant flux variation is found. Increases in the ?-ray flux of HESS J1745-290 by at least a factor of two would be required for a 3? detection of a flare with time scales of an hour. Investigation of possible QPO activity at periods claimed to be detected in X-rays does not show any periodicities in the H.E.S.S. signal.

Abstract: The rapidly varying (~10?min timescale) non-thermal X-ray emission observed from Sgr A*implies that particle acceleration is occuring close to the event horizon of the supermassive black hole. The TeV ?-ray source HESS?J1745-290 is coincident with Sgr?A*and may be closely related to its X-ray emission. Simultaneous X-ray and TeV observations are required to elucidate the relationship between these objects. We report on joint HESS/Chandra observations performed in July?2005, during which an X-ray flare was detected. Despite a factor of ?9 increase in the X-ray flux of Sgr?A*, no evidence is found for an increase in the TeV ?-ray flux from this region. We find that an increase in the ?-ray flux of a factor of?2 or greater can be excluded at a confidence level of?99%. This finding disfavours scenarios in which the keV and TeV emission are associated with the same population of accelerated particles and in which the bulk of the ?-ray emission is produced within ~1014?cm (~100RS) of the supermassive black hole.

Abstract: Aims. The supernova remnant (SNR) complex CTB?37 is an interesting candidate for observations with very high energy (VHE) ?-ray telescopes such as HESS. In this region, three SNRs are seen. One of them is potentially associated with several molecular clouds, a circumstance that can be used to probe the acceleration of hadronic cosmic rays.Methods. This region was observed with the HESS Cherenkov telescopes and the data were analyzed with standard HESS procedures. Recent X-ray observations with Chandra and XMM-Newton were used to search for X-ray counterparts.Results. The discovery of a new VHE ?-ray source HESS?J1714-385 coincident with the remnant CTB?37A is reported. The energy spectrum is well described by a power-law with a photon index of ? = 2.30 ? 0.13 and a differential flux at 1?TeV of ?0= (8.7 ?1.0stat?1.8sys) ?10-13cm-2?s-1?TeV-1. The integrated flux above 1?TeV is equivalent to?3% of the flux of the Crab nebula above the same energy. This VHE ?-ray source is a counterpart candidate for the unidentified EGRET source 3EG?J1714-3857. The observed VHE?emission is consistent with the molecular gas distribution around CTB?37A; a close match is expected in a hadronic scenario for ?-ray production. The X-ray observations reveal the presence of thermal X-rays from the NE part of the?SNR. In the NW?part of the remnant, an extended non-thermal X-ray source, CXOU?J171419.8-383023, is discovered as well. Possible connections of the X-ray emission to the newly found VHE?source are discussed.

Abstract: The HESS experiment, an array of four Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes with high sensitivity and large field-of-view, has been used to search for emitters of very-high-energy (VHE, >100?GeV) ?-rays along the Galactic plane, covering the region 30??< l < 60?, 280??< l < 330?, and -3??< b < 3?. In this continuation of the HESS Galactic Plane Scan, a new extended VHE ?-ray source was discovered at ?2000=19h12m49s, ?2000=+10?09?06??(HESS?J1912+101). Its integral flux between 1?10?TeV is ~10% of the Crab Nebula flux in the same energy range. The measured energy spectrum can be described by a power law dN/dE ? E-?with a photon index ?= 2.7 ?0.2stat?0.3sys. HESS?J1912+101 is plausibly associated with the high spin-down luminosity pulsar PSR?J1913+1011. We also discuss associations with an as yet unconfirmed SNR candidate proposed from low frequency radio observation and/or with molecular clouds found in 13CO data.

Abstract: Aims. The BL?Lac object RGB?J0152+017?(z=0.080) was predicted to be a very high-energy (VHE; >100?GeV) ?-ray source, due to its high X-ray and radio fluxes. Our aim is to understand the radiative processes by investigating the observed emission and its production mechanism using the High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) experiment. Methods. We report recent observations of the BL?Lac source RGB?J0152+017?made in late October and November 2007 with the HESS array consisting of four imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Contemporaneous observations were made in X-rays by the Swift and RXTE satellites, in the optical band with the ATOM telescope, and in the radio band with the Nan?ay Radio Telescope. Results. A signal of 173 ?-ray photons corresponding to a statistical significance of 6.6? was found in the data. The energy spectrum of the source can be described by a powerlaw with a spectral index of ?=2.95?0.36stat?0.20syst. The integral flux above 300?GeV corresponds to ~2% of the flux of the Crab nebula. The source spectral energy distribution (SED) can be described using a two-component non-thermal synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) leptonic model, except in the optical band, which is dominated by a thermal host galaxy component. The parameters that are found are very close to those found in similar SSC studies in TeV blazars. Conclusions. RGB?J0152+017?is discovered as a source of VHE ?-rays by HESS The location of its synchrotron peak, as derived from the SED in Swift data, allows clear classification as a high-frequency-peaked BL?Lac (HBL).

Abstract: Aims. Observations of shell-type supernova remnants (SNRs) in the GeV to multi-TeV ?-ray band, coupled with those at millimetre radio wavelengths, are motivated by the search for cosmic-ray accelerators in our Galaxy. The old-age mixed-morphology SNR W?28 (distance?~2?kpc) is a prime target due to its interaction with molecular clouds along its northeastern boundary and other clouds situated nearby.Methods. We observed the W?28 field (for ~40?h) at very high energy (VHE) ?-ray energies (E > 0.1?TeV) with the HESS. Cherenkov telescopes. A reanalysis of EGRET E > 100?MeV data was also undertaken. Results from the NANTEN?4?m telescope Galactic plane survey and other CO?observations were used to study molecular clouds. Results. We have discovered VHE ?-ray emission (HESS?J1801-233) coincident with the northeastern boundary of W?28 and a complex of sources (HESS?J1800-240A, B and C) ~0.5? south of W?28 in the Galactic disc. The EGRET source (GRO?J1801-2320) is centred on HESS?J1801-233 but may also be related to HESS?J1800-240 given the large EGRET point spread function. The VHE differential photon spectra are well fit by pure power laws with indices ? ~2.3 to 2.7. The spectral indices of HESS?J1800-240A, B, and C are consistent within statistical errors. All VHE sources are ~10?in intrinsic radius except for HESS?J1800-240C, which appears pointlike. The NANTEN 12CO(J = 1-0) data reveal molecular clouds positionally associating with the VHE emission, spanning a ~15?km?s-1range in local standard of rest velocity. Conclusions. The VHE/molecular cloud association could indicate a hadronic origin for HESS?J1801-233 and HESS?J1800-240, and several cloud components in projection may contribute to the VHE emission. The clouds have components covering a broad velocity range encompassing the distance estimates for W?28 (~2?kpc) and extending up to ~4?kpc. Assuming hadronic origin and distances of 2 and 4?kpc for cloud components, the required cosmic-ray density enhancement factors (with respect to the solar value) are in the range ~10 to ~30. If situated at 2?kpc distance, such cosmic-ray densities may be supplied by SNRs like W?28. Additionally and/or alternatively, particle acceleration may come from several catalogued SNRs and SNR candidates, the energetic ultra compact HII?region W?28A2, and the HII?regions M?8 and M?20, along with their associated open clusters. Further sub-mm observations would be recommended to probe in detail the dynamics of the molecular clouds at velocites > 10?km?s-1and their possible connection to W?28.

Abstract: Aims.The properties of the very high energy (VHE; E > 100?GeV) ?-ray emission from the high-frequency peaked BL?Lac PG?1553+113 are investigated. An attempt is made to measure the currently unknown redshift of this object.Methods.VHE?Observations of PG?1553+113 were made with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) in 2005 and 2006. H + K?(1.45-2.45??m) spectroscopy of PG?1553+113 was performed in March 2006 with SINFONI, an integral field spectrometer of the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile.Results.A VHE?signal, ~10 standard deviations, is detected by HESS?during the?2?years of observations (24.8?h live time). The integral flux above 300?GeV is (4.6 ?0.6stat?0.9syst) ? 10-12cm-2?s-1, corresponding to ~3.4% of the flux from the Crab Nebula above the same threshold. The time-averaged energy spectrum is measured from 225?GeV to ~1.3 TeV, and is characterized by a very soft power law (photon index of ?= 4.5 ?0.3stat?0.1syst). No evidence for any flux or spectral variations is found on any sampled time scale within the VHE?data. The redshift of PG?1553+113 could not be determined. Indeed, even though the measured SINFONI spectrum is the most sensitive ever reported for this object at near infrared wavelengths, and the sensitivity is comparable to the best spectroscopy at other wavelengths, no absorption or emission lines were found in the H+K spectrum presented here.

36. A new macroinitiator for the synthesis of triblock copolymers PA12‐b‐PDMS‐b‐PA12

Abstract: A new PDMS macroinitiator is proposed for the anionic ring‐opening polymerization of lactams. This α,ω‐dicarbamoyloxy caprolactam PDMS macroinitiator was readily obtained in quantitative yield, by an original synthesis scheme in two steps, which involved the scarcely reported reaction of isocyanates with silanol groups. It was then shown that this bifunctional macroinitiator enabled to synthesize triblock copolymers PA12‐b‐PDMS‐b‐PA12 by polymerization of lauryl lactam (LL) at high temperature (200°C) in inert atmosphere under conditions compatible with reactive extrusion processes. Another related high molar weight α,ω‐diacyllactam PDMS macroinitiator was also successfully used in the polymerization of LL under the same conditions, therefore overcoming the limitations formerly reported for this type of macroinitiators during the polymerization ɛ‐caprolactam (ɛ‐CL) at a much lower temperature (80°C). Triblock copolymers with a wide range of PA12 /molar weights (Mn: ∼ 10,800–250,000 Da) were eventually obtained by using both types of macroinitiators. DMTA and DSC analyses showed that their thermal properties were strongly dependent upon their respective contents in soft and hard blocks. Such triblock copolymers already appear very promising for the highly effective in situ compatibilization of PA12/PDMS blends as shown by recent complementary results obtained in our laboratory. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract: Migrate aus Innenbeschichtungen von Konservendosen bestehen aus einer Vielzahl von Substanzen, welche größtenteils nicht toxikologisch bewertet sind. 95% ethanolische Migrate eines Polyestercoatings und Epoxidcoatings wurden in verschiedenen Biotests auf Mutagenität (Ames II-Test), auf aquatische Toxozität (Fischembryo-Test) und auf Zytotoxizität (BrdU-ELISA, WST-1-Assay, Neutralrot-Test, RNA-Synthese-Inhibition) untersucht. Bis zu einer Konzentration von 60 dm2/l konnten sowohl im Ames II-Test keine mutagenen Effekte als auch im Fischembryo-Test keine letalen Effekte bestimmt werden. Die erhaltenen Ergebnisse aus den Bestimmungen zur Zytotoxizität variieren stark; dies liegt begründet in der Art des Testsystems, der eingesetzten Zelllinie (Hela-S3, Caco-2, HT-29, Hep-G2) und den gewählten Inkubationsbedingungen. Der Neutralrot-Test wurde für die Untersuchungen an Migraten aus Innenbeschichtungen von Konservendosen validiert. Bekannte gesetzlich geregelte Substanzen in Migraten aus epoxidhaltigen Coatings, BPA, BADGE, BADGE*2H2O, BADGE*HCl*H2O und BADGE*2HCl wurden im Neutralrot-Test an 2 unterschiedlichen Zelllinien, einer humanen Kolonkarzinomzelllinie (HT-29) und einer humanen Hepatoblastomzelllinie (Hep G2) untersucht. Die IC50, Hep-G2-Werte der gesetzlich regulierten epoxidhaltigen Substanzen liegen zwischen 7 mg/l für BADGE und 83 mg/l für BADGE*2H2O. Während das 95% ethanolische Migrat des Epoxidcoatings einen signifikanten Effekt im Neutralrot-Test (IC50, Hep-G2= 6.6 ± 0.8 dm2/l) induziert, wird durch das Migrat des Polyestercoatings kein Effekt hervorgerufen (IC50, Hep-G2> 30 dm2/l). Die Gehalte der gesetzlich geregelten Substanzen (BPA, BADGE, BADGE*2H2O) im Migrat des Epoxidcoatings wurden bestimmt und deren Anteil am zytotoxischen Effekt des Migrates abgeschätzt. Nur ca. 0,5% des zytotoxischen Effektes des Migrates im Neutralrot-Test kann auf diese Substanzen zurückgeführt werden. Migrants from can coatings consist of a complex mixture of a variety of substances that mostly are not toxicologically evaluated. 95% ethanolic migrates from a polyester and an epoxy coating were screened in different bioassays on mutagenicity (Ames II-Test), on aquatic toxicity (Fish Embryo Assay) and on cytotoxicity (BrdU-ELISA, WST-1-Assay, Neutral Red Assay (NRA), RNA-Synthesis-Inhibition). No mutagenic effect was detected in the Ames II-Test and no lethal effects were induced in the fish embryo test up to a concentration of 60 dm2/l. Strongly varying cytotoxicity effects have been determined depending on the type of the assay, the cell line in use (Hela-S3, Caco-2, HT-29, Hep-G2) as well as the incubation conditions. The NRA was validated for the investigation of the coating migrates. Legally regulated substances known to migrate from epoxy coatings, BPA, BADGE, BADGE*2H2O, BADGE*HCl*H2O and BADGE*2HCl were investigated in the NRA with two different cell lines, a human colon adenocarcinoma cell line (HT-29) and a human hepatocellar carcinoma cell line (Hep-G2). The IC50, Hep-G2-values of the regulated epoxy based substances ranged from 7 mg/l for BADGE to 83 mg/l for BADGE*2H2O. The 95% ethanolic migrate of the epoxy coating revealed a significant effect in the NRA (IC50, Hep-G2= 6.6 ± 0.8 dm2/l) while the polyester coating induced no effect (IC50, Hep-G2> 30 dm2/l). The amount of the legally regulated substances (BPA, BADGE, BADGE*2H2O) in the migrate of the epoxy coating was analysed and their part on the cytotoxic effect of the migrate was estimated. Only about 0.5% of the effect of the migrate in the NRA could be traced back to these substances.

Abstract: The influence of process parameters on plasma-assisted boriding of ferrous materials in a BCl3–H2–Ar atmosphere has been investigated. The elimination of pores in steel substrates is largely influenced by the discharge potential for a fixed BCl3–H2–Ar mixture. The electrical discharge is characterised by the belt of optical emission spectroscopy. Non-porous boride layers have been applied for oil pump drive gears which were then wear tested. The results show excellent wear protection properties of boride layers produced in a plasma-assisted process.

44. Patterns of suicide among Mexican Americans and Anglos, 19602–1980

Abstract: Little is known about suicidal behavior among Mexican Americans, the second largest and most rapidly growing ethnic group in the United States. This paper reports trends in suicide rates for Mexican Americans and Anglos in Bexar County (San Antonio), Texas, over a 20-year period of time. Results show that suicide rates for Mexican Americans of both sexes are substantially lower than those for Anglos from 1960 to 1980. Suicide rates for both ethnic groups increased over time, but rates for Ang los increased more than rates for Mexican Americans. Unique aspects of Mexican American culture are offered to explain the findings.

45. Presence of putative neurotransmitters in the myenteric plexus of the gastrointestinal tract and in the musculature of the urinary bladder of the ferret

Abstract: The innervation of the musculature in the ferret stomach, ileum, colon and urinary bladder was investigated using immunohistochemistry in noncolchicin-treated tissues. In the gastrointestinal tract two main subpopulations of myenteric neurones were found: cholinergic neurones expressing choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), which made up 68, 67 and 67% of the neurones in the stomach, ileum and colon, respectively, and nitrergic neurones containing nitric oxide synthase and NADPH-diaphorase (stomach: 23%, ileum: 21%, colon: 26%). In the stomach, cholinergic neurones expressed substance P (SP, 2% of all neurones), dopamine-β-hydroxylase (DBH, 19%) but not tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) or vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), while nitrergic neurones contained VIP and neuropeptide Y (NPY). TH- but not DBH-immunoreactivity was observed in 4% of gastric neurones. Intense immunoreactivity in the musculature suggests that part of ChAT/SP- and NOS/NPY/VIP-positive neurones function as motorneurones. In the ileum, a high number (32%) of DBH-positive neurones was demonstrated. About half of the SP-positive neurones in the ileum also contained calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). In the urinary bladder, only few intramural ganglia were observed. The smooth muscle was densely innervated by ChAT, NPY and DBH immunoreactive fibres. The data showed that the innervation of the ferret viscera exhibited similarities but also differences as compared with other mammalian species. Some of the chemical coding of myenteric neurones is remarkably similar to that observed in other mammals.

47. Synthesis and Structure of Pentavalent Bismuth(V) Alkoxides and Ligand Redistribution Equilibria in Solution

Abstract: The six new pentavalent Bi(V) alkoxide complexes Ph3Bi(OR)2, 1, Ph3BiBr(OR), 2, and Ph4Bi(OR), 3 (a, R = C6F5; b R = C6Cl5) have been prepared. Ph4Bi(OR) was synthesized by alcoholysis of BiPh5 with ROH. Ph3Bi(OR)2 and Ph3BiBr(OR) were products of the salt elimination reaction between Ph3BiBr2 and NaOR. These compounds were characterized spectroscopically and by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In the solid state, they possess distorted trigonal bipyramidal coordination geometries. Although the mixed species Ph3BiBr(OR) may be isolated in pure form as crystalline solids, they do not exist as pure compounds in solution owing to the very rapid redistribution equilibrium Ph3Bi(OR)2 + Ph3BiBr2 &rlhar2; 2Ph3BiBr(OR). The equilibrium constants were measured using VT NMR spectroscopy. For comparison, the equilibrium constants for the previously unreported cross-exchange reactions between the dihalides Ph3BiX2 (X = F, Cl, Br) were also measured at 226 K. Trends observed in the values of Keq correlate with the difference in the electronegativity of the mixed X species. The thermal stabilities of Ph3Bi(OR)2 were examined in toluene solution and in the solid state. Pyrolysis results in elimination of ROPh for both R = C6F5 and C6Cl5.

49. Modelling of the Free Radical Polymerisation of Methylmethacrylate up to High Temperature

Abstract: ABSTRACTMany models have been developed to describe the kinetics of the free radical polymerisation of methyl methacrylate (MMA). However, they are restricted to low temperatures, e.g., below the glass transition temperature of the polymer, Tg. In this work, kinetics of bulk and solution polymerisation of MMA were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) for temperatures above Tg, i.e. 130-165°C. On the basis of our own experimental results (high temperatures) and those published in the literature (low temperatures), it has been shown that with small modifications, the model of Achilias and Kiparissides gives a good description of kinetics for a temperature range from 20 to 165°C. Furthermore, all parameters appearing in the diffusion-limited part of the kinetic rate constants have a clear physical meaning and can be evaluated in terms of physical and transport properties of the reacting species.

50. Depression and anxiety among Mexican Americans in a family health center

Abstract: Summary A standardized interview including parts of the NIMH-Diagnostic Interview Schedule was used to determine the prevalence of depression (major depression or dysthymia) and generalized anxiety in a random sample of predominantly low-income Mexican American patients attending an inner-city family health center. Overall rates of current DSM-III-diagnosable depression and anxiety were similar to rates reported for other primary care patient populations in the United States. There were racial/ethnic and sex differences in the rates of these disorders, with Anglo females having disproportionately high rates. Among women, the rate of mental disorders was higher for those with many somatic symptoms, three or more children, low scores on a scale of family integration, and numerous missed appointments in the last year.
