The aim of this study is to delineate the distinctive high-resolution computed tomography features of pulmonary cryptococcosis in non-HIV-infected patients. This retrospective analysis encompasses high-resolution computed tomography scans from 58 patients with histologically confirmed pulmonary cryptococcosis, focusing on the diagnostic challenges and the factors that lead to misdiagnosis. Analysis of computed tomography scans from these patients indicated that nodular or mass-like presentations were evident in 32 cases (55.2%), consolidation presentations in 7 cases (12.1%), and mixed presentations in 19 cases (32.8%). Lesions were predominantly located in the lower lobes of the lungs (40 cases, 69.0%) and in peripheral zones (55 cases, 94.8%). Notable radiographic signs included the presence of the burr sign in 55 cases (94.8%), lobulation sign in 53 cases (91.4%), halo sign in 53 cases (91.4%), and air bronchogram in 46 cases (79.0%). Moreover, 24 cases (41.4%) exhibited necrosis or cavitation, mediastinal lymphadenopathy was noted in 6 cases (10.3%), and pleural effusion was present in 5 cases (8.6%). Lesions were devoid of calcification. Pulmonary cryptococcosis ought to be contemplated in the differential diagnosis when computed tomography imaging exhibits patterns including, but not limited to, lower lobe and peripheral distribution, a broad base abutting the pleura, clustered growth with a propensity for fusion, air bronchogram within lesions, and peripheral halo sign.

A new geometric optics model has been developed for the calculation of light scattering by a coated sphere, and the analytic expression for scattering is presented according to whether rays hit the core or not. The ray of various geometric optics approximation (GOA) terms is parameterized by the number of reflections in the coating/core interface, the coating/medium interface, and the number of chords in the core, with the degeneracy path and repeated path terms considered for the rays striking the core, which simplifies the calculation. For the ray missing the core, the various GOA terms are dealt with by a homogeneous sphere. The scattering intensity of coated particles are calculated and then compared with those of Debye series and Aden–Kerker theory. The consistency of the results proves the validity of the method proposed in this work.

The work described was aimed at an analysis of the principal factors affecting the adsorption of 60Co ions onto a peat from Lin Tao County (in the south of Gansu Province, P. R. China). The adsorption of 60Co ions onto the peat was studied as a function of contact time, ratio of solution volume (V) to solid mass (m), pH, ionic strength and the initial concentration of Co ions. It was found that the relative adsorption rate was quite rapid, that adsorption gradually decreased with increasing values of V/m and that ionic strength had a moderate effect on the process. In addition, the pH value strongly influenced the extent of adsorption. Over the high concentration range, the adsorption equilibrium could be described by the Freundlich equation, with this equation being reduced to the Henry equation, i.e. a linear adsorption isotherm, over the low concentration range. No attempt has been made at understanding the mechanism of 60Co ion adsorption onto peat in the present work.

Abstract: The sorption of UO22+ and phosphate on silica were simultaneously studied. The effect of contact time between the solid phase and aqueous solution, pH and ionic strength on the UO22+ sorption in the absence and the presence of phosphate was investigated. The effect of contact time between the solid phase and aqueous solution, pH and ionic strength on the phosphate sorption was investigated too. The isotherms of UO22+ and phosphate sorption at different pH values were determined. It was found that as compared with the sorption in the absence of phosphate, the sorption of UO22+ on silica in the presence of phosphate is increased at low pH and decreased at high pH; the abruptly increased with increasing pH in the pH range 3-6; the sorption is gradually decreased with increasing pH in the pH range 2-12; the sorption insensitive and the sorption of phosphate is sensitive to ionic strength.

The chemical heterogeneity of proton binding on humic substances was studied via continuous intrinsic proton affinity distributions calculated using the condensation approximation from the master curves for two soil fulvic acids (FAs), one soil humic acid (HA) and one fulvic acid obtained from weathered coal. The master curves, i.e. plots of θT,H(the overall protonation degree) versus Hs (the proton concentration in the diffuse double layer), were obtained from potentiometric titration curves at three ionic strengths. The value of Hs was calculated using an electrical double-layer model in which the humic substances were considered as rigid impermeable spheres. For all four samples, the proton affinity distributions were characterized by a few peaks with peak positions in the range 4–5.5. The similarities and differences between the samples studied were discussed.
