Prior to European settlement, cisco (Coregonus artedi) were likely one of Lake Ontario’s most abundant fishes but currently represent a small portion of the fish community. To understand how the population has changed over the past 70 years we compared trends in annual catch rates from gillnet and bottom trawl surveys and commercial fishery landings. In surveys, cisco were generally rare, and represented 0.2, 0.4, and 0.001% of all fish caught in two gillnet surveys and bottom trawl surveys. Cisco catch rates in gillnets and trawls were positively correlated and correlations increased when gillnet catches two years later were compared to trawls since trawls tended to capture smaller, juvenile-sized cisco relative to gillnets. Survey catch rates suggest recruitment is generally low, but discrete periods of relatively greater recruitment in the 1980s and mid-2010s suggest reproductive conditions for cisco vary temporally. Trawl surveys were the most spatially extensive survey and illustrated catch rates were highest in northeastern Lake Ontario. Greater cisco abundance in this region may be related to more-abundant embayment spawning habitat, greater distance from winter aggregations of nonnative planktivores, or more appropriate environmental conditions during spawing. At the basin scale, Lake Ontario bottom trawl catch per unit effort (CPUE) was positively correlated to Lake Superior trawl CPUE suggesting a regional driver, such as climate, may be similarly impacting both populations. Concurrent patterns across Lake Ontario surveys support the idea that cisco are currently a small portion of the fish community, recruitment remains inconsistent, and habitats in northeastern Lake Ontario appear critical to the remnant populations.

Competitive fishing has become an important element of recreational fisheries for black bass Micropterusspp. in North America. The vast majority of competitive events involve a “live‐release” format, where fish are held in a boat's live well after being angled and are then released following the weigh‐in. We examined the frequency and importance of physical impacts between Smallmouth Bass Micropterus dolomieuand the walls of the live well when tournaments are held on large water bodies. Using an experimental live well that included a video recorder, we determined the number of collisions between Smallmouth Bass and the walls of the live well when a 5.6‐m boat was driven on Lake Ontario. During these experiments, 10 of 28 Smallmouth Bass lost equilibrium and became inverted. Live‐well transport also resulted in elevations of intracellular enzymes in blood plasma that were used as indicators of cell damage. The results of these experiments indicate that physical impacts with the walls of the live well may be an important factor contributing to the physiological disturbance experienced by Smallmouth Bass in tournaments on large water bodies. Our results also show that this disturbance can be reduced by simply padding the live well. These findings have important implications for fisheries managers, as well as the competitive angling community.

2-[4′-Maleimidylanilino]naphthalene 6-sulfonic acid (MIANS) irreversibly inactivates Na,K-ATPase in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. Inactivation is prevented by 3 mmATP or low K+(<1 mm); the protective effect K+is reversed at higher concentrations. This biphasic effect was also observed with K+congeners. In contrast, Na+ions did not protect. MIANS inactivation disrupted high affinity ATP binding. Tryptic fragments of MIANS-labeled protein were analyzed by reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography. ATP clearly protected one major labeled peptide peak. This observation was confirmed by separation of tryptic peptides in SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis revealing a single fluorescently-labeled peptide of ∼5 kDa. N-terminal amino acid sequencing identified the peptide (V545LGFCH …). This hydrophobic peptide contains only two Cys residues in all sodium pump α-subunit sequences and is found in the major cytoplasmic loop between M4 and M5, a region previously associated with ATP binding. Subsequent digestion of the tryptic peptide with V8 protease and N-terminal amino acid sequencing identified the modified residue as Cys577. The cation-dependent change in reactivity of Cys577implies structural alterations in the ATP-binding domain following cation binding and occlusion in the intramembrane domain of Na,K-ATPase and expands our knowledge of the extent to which cation binding and occlusion are sensed in the ATP hydrolysis domain.

Plankton is the major source of food for cisco and their longevity depends on factors such as predation.

The article reports that the Ontario Federation of Anglers & Hunters (OFAH) has created a position for Jeremy Holden to work as Community Conservation Field Biologist for its conservation project. Jeremy said that currently the OFAH Fish and Wildlife department is helping clubs prepare for increased salmon stocking, restoring coldwater streams through the Community Stream Steward Program, developing walleye hatchery programs, and monitoring a genetically unique strain of lake trout in lakes near Bancroft.
