Several letters to the editor in response to articles in previous issues including "What We'll find Inside the Atom," by Leon Lederman, in the September 15, 2008 issue, "Why Japan's Leaders Still Can't Deal With a Loyal Opposition," in the September 15, 2008 issue, and "It's Not Just White Girls," in the September 15, 2008 issue are presented.

Three adolescent patients with severe seizure disorders were treated with phenacemide. All three patients showed elevated serum creatinine and normal blood urea nitrogen values while on phenacemide. Simultaneous urea and creatinine clearance studies performed on each patient demonstrated normal urea clearances and decreased creatinine clearances. Inulin clearance performed in one patient was normal. The medication was discontinued in two of the patients because of co-existing neutropenia. Serum creatinine values returned to normal after phenacemide treatment was terminated. The elevation in serum creatinine values with phenacemide appears to be dose related, reversible, and unrelated to impairment of glomerular filtration.

The methadone hydrochloride maintenance method of Dole and Nyswander for the treatment of hard-core heroin addicts has been adapted to the needs of a municipal hospital chest disease service. Treatment is begun on the wards and continued after discharge in a special outpatient clinic, though patients not requiring hospitalization may begin as outpatients. In the first 33 months of the existence of the Methadone Chest Disease Program (MCDP), 165 heroin addicts with a variety of chronic chest diseases were seen. Of the 127 interested in the program, 19 (14.9%) were rejected; of the 93 accepted, 63 (68%) remain on the program and are being successfully treated for their dual problems. This program has made these difficult patients manageable in the hospital and has led to successful medical treatment and a high degree of social rehabilitation.

INTRODUCTION When environmental and physiological influences are held constant, heat radiation (ie, infrared radiation) from a region of the human body is a function of blood flow to that region. Because of this, tactile estimation of the warmth of an extremity is commonly used to assess vascular sufficiency. When more quantitative and objective measurements are desired, thermocouples or thermistors may be placed on the skin. Though precise, these devices have two disadvantages. First, it is necessary to make direct contact with the part whose temperature is to be measured; and, second, the information obtained refers only to the small point at which the sensing device is located.There are occasions when it would be useful to have a temperature "map" of a whole region of the body obtained simultaneously and without direct contact.
